The Runnin’ Rebels, who are 1-3 since leading scorer Rashad Vaughn went down to injury, have won five of their last nine games. UNLV, which had to replace all five starters from a year ago, used a rotation for most of this season that included five freshmen, one sophomore and two seniors. Vaughn, a freshman guard, is out of action after suffering a torn meniscus in his left knee on Feb. 10 vs. Fresno State. He had led the team in scoring with an average of 17.8 ppg, which ranks second in the Mountain West and third in the country among freshmen. Sophomore forward Christian Wood has 15 double-doubles this year, which ranks eighth in the country, and has averages of 15.4 ppg (7th in MW), and team highs of 9.8 rpg (2nd in MW, 21st in the country) and 2.9 bpg (1st in MW, 10th in the country). Freshman forward Goodluck Okonoboh is second on the team in blocks with 2.8 per game (2nd in MW, 12th in the country and first among all freshmen). Senior guard Cody Doolin leads the squad and MW with 4.0 apg and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.3, which leads the conference and is eighth nationally. Freshman guard Patrick McCaw is second in the MW in assists per game (3.5) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2) during conference-only games.
As a team, the Runnin’ Rebels are third in the nation in total blocks (192), fourth in blocks per game (6.9 bpg) and 15th in defensive rebounds per game (26.64).
Saturday’s game will be televised on CBS Sports Network with Carter Blackburn and Pete Gillen calling the action with Allie LaForce reporting from the sideline. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the UNLV radio call, which may be heard live on ESPN Radio 1100 AM/100.9 FM in Las Vegas. UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ON THE ROAD AT NEW MEXICO ON WEDNESDAY
Lady Rebels have won four straight on the Lobos’ home court
Coming off a thrilling two-point home victory over Utah State this past Saturday, the UNLV women’s basketball team hopes to take that winning momentum on the road as it takes on the New Mexico Lobos on Wednesday night in Albuquerque, with the game tipping off at 6 pm (PT). The Lady Rebels are looking for a third straight regular season sweep of the Lobos, as they have came away from the Pit the past four years with a victory.
The biggest factor in the game could be how New Mexico handles defensive pressure from UNLV, as the Lady Rebels forced 22 turnovers and came up with a season-high 17 steals in the victory. UNLV is near the top of the Mountain West in steals per game while the Lobos are second to last in turnover margin in MW play.
A win would give UNLV a 4-3 road record in conference play. Currently only team other teams have winning road records in MW action, Colorado State and Boise State.
There will be live video of the game featured on the Mountain West Network at UNLVRebels.com. while the UNLV radio broadcast, featuring the call of Adam Candee, is available on KSHP 1400 AM and also off a link at UNLVRebels.com.

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOLDS OFF UTAH STATE 82-80
Lady Rebels snap losing streak, move to 11-0 all-time against Utah State in Las Vegas
UNLV senior guard Rmanii Haynes’ steal and free throws in the final 83 seconds broke a tie and were the eventual game-winning points in a thrilling 82-80 victory over Utah State on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West women’s basketball action at the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels saw Utah State rally from 14 points down to take a two-point lead twice in the final five minutes, but UNLV would hold on for the win to improve to 10-14 overall, and 7-5 in league play. The Aggies, meanwhile, dropped to 10-14, 4-9 in the conference.
UNLV opened the game with a 19-6 spurt, and led by 14 points with 14:22 to play off a layup by Briana Charles. The advantage was still at 10 points for the Lady Rebels, 69-59, off a three-pointer from Alana Cesarz with 9:38 on the clock. Utah State then made its run, scoring 10 straight to tie the game at 69-69 at the 7:11 mark. Following a layup from Aley Rohde, Utah State took its first lead since the first half thanks to a three-pointer from Franny Vaaulu, 72-71.
The lead then switched hands twice over the next two minutes, with a 4-0 run putting UNLV up by three. Jennifer Schlott, who finished with a game-high 30 points, scored five unanswered of her own for Utah State, giving the Aggies a 77-75 lead off a three-pointer at the 4:16 mark. The teams then traded baskets, and the game was tied again with 2:31 to play after Haynes grabbed an offensive rebound, drew a foul, and made the ensuing free throws. Both teams missed shots on their next possession, with Utah State calling a timeout at midcourt following the UNLV miss. On the inbounds pass, Haynes stole the ball right out of Stephanie Bairstow’s hands and raced in for a layup. She was fouled on the attempt, and sank both shots for an 81-79 lead with 1:23 to go. Another Utah State missed jumper led to Rejane Verin going to the line for two shots. She made the first of two, while on the other end, Ingrida Strikas also made one of two at the line, leaving the score at 82-80 with 51 seconds left. UNLV ran the clock down before missing a long three-pointer, giving Utah State one last chance. The Aggies would miss two jumpers at the end, leaving UNLV with the two-point victory.
“Down the stretch I thought we did a really good job of getting to the free throw line and making our shots,” said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. “Rmanii’s key steal and free throws, you have to make free throws down the stretch. In the first half, we played team basketball, everyone contributed, and our posts had really great energy, while our fans really added to our energy as well.”
UNLV came out hot at the start, scoring 11 points in the first three minutes on the way to opening up the 19-6 edge. It was a 22-10 advantage before the Aggies reeled off 13 straight points, including 10 straight from Schlott. UNLV quickly answered with an 8-1 run of its own, started by a three-pointer from Mia Bell. The Lady Rebels would take a 39-32 lead into halftime.
Four finished in double-figures for UNLV, led by Cesarz’s 18 points. Rohde added a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, Verin scored 12 points and Bell 10. Haynes posted seven points and seven assists as well for UNLV. As a team, UNLV shot 50% (27-of-54) from the floor, was 7-of-15 from three-point range (46.7%), and 21-of-25 at the line for 84%. UNLV held a 41-29 edge on the boards, but turned the ball over 24 times to just 14 for the Aggies.
In addition to Schlott’s 30 points, Vaaulu and Bairstow were also in double figures for the Aggies with 13 and 12, respectively. Utah State shot 41.5% (27-of-65) for the game, was 8-of-18 from downtown for 44.4%, and 18-of-22 at the charity stripe for 81.8%.
UNLV returns to action with a road contest in Albuquerque, N.M., against the New Mexico Lobos at 6 pm (PT).

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SHOT DOWN BY WYOMING 82-56
Lady Rebels held to 15 field goals over final 36 minutes of the game.
UNLV was held to 32.8% shooting and outscored by a 22-6 margin on points off turnovers, leading to an 82-56 loss at Wyoming on Saturday afternoon in Mountain West women’s basketball action from Arena Auditorium. The Lady Rebels fell to 9-14 overall, and 6-5 in MW play with the setback, while the Cowgirls improved to 15-6, and 6-4 in the league.
UNLV was the team hot on offense at the start, knocking down five of its first seven shots while opening up an 11-7 edge four minutes into the game. Offensive rebounds by the home team sparked a run though, with the Cowgirls going on an 15-2 run over a 5:25 span. UNLV missed eight of nine shots during that stretch and turned the ball over three times. Wyoming meanwhile made all six of its shots from the floor during the run, several of which were layups in transition off defensive rebounds.
Five unanswered from UNLV closed the edge to 25-20 with 9:25 on the clock after Danielle Miller hit one of two at the line. Wyoming quickly took control with an 8-0 burst that included back-to-back treys to open up a 33-20 advantage with 6:27 to play in the half. The lead stayed at double-digits for the rest of the year, with the halftime score 43-31 in favor of the Cowgirls.
UNLV held Wyoming scoreless for the first 2:23 of the second half, and scored the first points out of the break on a Miller jumper to close within 19:33. The Lady Rebels then missed shots on its next two possessions, and Wyoming posted a 6-0 to push the edge to 49-33.
Following a three-point play from Alana Cesarz to make the score 65-47 with 6:41 on the clock, Wyoming scored 16 of the next 19 points, taking its largest lead of the afternoon at 81-50 with 2:49 to play.
Cesarz led the Lady Rebels with 16 points, while Mia Bell added 10 points. Aley Rohde posted five points and nine rebounds. UNLV finished the game shooting 20-of-61 from the floor for 32.8%, was 3-of-15 from behind the three-point line for 20%, and 13-of-23 at the charity stripe for 56.5%. The Lady Rebels did hold a 44-39 edge on the boards, but turned the ball over 17 times, while forcing only 11 by the Cowgirls.
Wyoming had three in double-figures, led by Marquelle Dent’s 18 points. Kaitlyn Mileto was next with 16, and Fallon Lewis had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 47.3% (26-of-55) from the field, 9-of-20 from downtown for 45%, and 21-of-31 at the line for 67.7%.
The Lady Rebels are off until next Saturday, Feb. 15, when they host Utah State at 4 pm in the Cox Pavilion. That is also National Girls and Women in Sport Day at UNLV, and an all-sports clinic will be held prior to the game, more information is available at UNLVRebels.com.
Deville Smith scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead UNLV past Utah State 62-42 on Wednesday.
UNLV (12-7, 3-3 Mountain West) got 13 points and 14 rebounds from Roscoe Smith. The Rebels shot 38 percent and hit on 7 of 22 beyond the arc.
Jarred Shaw led Utah State (12-6, 2-4) with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Aggies were outrebounded 44-29 and made just 2 of 17 3-point attempts.

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOSTS Play 4Kay, NATIONAL
GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY OVER NEXT TWO WEEKS
Annual breast cancer awareness game (Play 4Kay) set for
Feb. 5, NGWSD will be prior to the Utah State game on Feb. 15
The UNLV Lady Rebels and the UNLV Athletic Department will be hosting two special games over the next two weeks, beginning with the annual Play 4Kay breast cancer awareness game on Wednesday, Feb. 5 against Colorado State at 7 pm. UNLV will then host over 300 kids participating in the 28th annual celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, to be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Utah State. Both games will be held in the Cox Pavilion.
Wednesday’s game against the CSU Rams is part of the national Play 4Kay initiative, the goal of which is to help raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research. All fans that wear pink to the contest will receive $2 admission (children 12 and under are free), while free pink shoelaces will be available for the first 50 fans. The team will also be raffling off specially decorated shooting shirts, selling raffle tickets on the Cox Pavilion concourse ($2 for one entry, $5 for three entries) with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow Foundation. UNLV has been selected as one of 25 schools on the West Coast by the Foundation to help build attendance and donations for the cause.
On Feb. 15 for NGWSD, players and staff from several women’s athletic teams at UNLV, including the basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball squads will be helping to run an all-sports clinic for over 300 kids (girls and boys) between 2nd and 8th grades. The clinic starts at 1:30 pm with different stations spread out over the Mendenhall Center and the practice courts at the Cox Pavilion. Following the clinic, all participants are invited to attend the UNLV Lady Rebels contest against Utah State for free, with the game starting at 4 pm in the Cox Pavilion.
NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports, starting back in 1987. The national-wide celebration is jointly organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition, and this year’s theme is “Passing the Torch, Blazing the Trail!” This year’s event at UNLV is sponsored by the UNLV Women of Excellence.
RUNNIN’ REBELS BACK HOME ON WEDNESDAY
The UNLV men’s basketball team will face Utah State at 8:05 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center
The UNLV men’s basketball team will host Mountain West newcomer Utah State on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 8:05 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center. It will mark the Runnin’ Rebels’ first home game since Jan. 8 and will be the first meeting with the Aggies since both were members of the Big West Conference in 1996.
The Runnin’ Rebels are coming off a split in arguably their toughest road trip of the season: a 76-73 win at New Mexico last Wednesday in The Pit, and a 63-52 loss on Saturday at No. 7 San Diego State at Viejas Arena. Prior to the loss at SDSU, UNLV had won eight of its last 10 games and were 5-1 in contests played away from the Thomas & Mack Center.
Wednesday’s game vs. Utah State will be televised on CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan and Pete Gillen calling the action. Jon Sandler and Robert Smith will handle the radio call, which may be heard on ESPN Radio 1100/98.9 FM. A radio broadcast listen link and Gametracker will be available at UNLVRebels.com.
After six straight games at home to open the season, UNLV played two road games during its “Rodeo Road Trip,” losing a close one at then-No. 2 Arizona (63-58) on Dec. 7, then beating Southern Utah on Dec. 14 in Cedar City, which started a seven-game win streak. In the loss to the Wildcats, the Runnin’ Rebels held what is now the nation’s top-ranked team to its second-lowest scoring output of the season and its fourth-closest game in terms of margin of victory.
Roscoe Smith, who leads the nation in rebounding average with 12.4 rpg, is second in the country in double-doubles with 12. He had just one in two seasons at UConn. Smith grabbed 10 or more rebounds in the first six games of the season (now 14 of 18) with totals of 19, 21 and a career-high 22. Birch, who has eight double-doubles this season (18th in the nation), is fourth in the country in blocked shots with 3.6 per contest. He has had double-figure rebounding totals in nine games and has blocked at least four shots in a game nine times this season. Dejean-Jones leads the team in scoring with 15.0 ppg (third in Mountain West play at 21.0 ppg), while Smith (12.0 ppg, 12.4 rpg) is second on the team in scoring and is averaging a double-double. Birch is just shy of averaging a double-double (11.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg). Senior guard Kevin Olekaibe is the fourth Runnin’ Rebel in double figures at 10.4 ppg.

FRESHMAN’S HEROICS LIFTS UNLV WOMEN’S SOCCER PAST BOISE STATE 2-1
Rebels perfect 3-0 at home this season
UNLV continues to field a team with a high number of freshmen, and they continue to rise to the challenge as Jordan Magnin’s first career multi-goal game lifted the Rebels past Boise State 2-1 in the Mountain West women’s soccer opener for both teams on Friday night at Peter Johann Field. The Rebels improved their overall record to a league-best 6-3-2, and are 1-0 in league play, while the Broncos dropped to 5-4-2, 0-1 in the MW.
“We knew that Boise State was a dynamic, fast and athletic team, and that we would have to play at a high level if we wanted to come out with a win,” said UNLV head coach Michael Coll. “Our plan tonight was to make sure we stayed in front of them on defense, and I felt like we did a great job of that about 95% of the time. And the freshmen all played great, while Jordan is really blossoming into a great scorer. She keeps us on pace and keeps the attack going when she’s in there, and was able to make some good things happen tonight.”
Of the 15 field players that saw action on the night for the Rebels, 10 were freshmen, including all five substitutes. That includes Magnin, who entered the game late in the first half, and immediately made an impact. Following a free kick by UNLV, the ball would come to her and she blasted a low shot from 25 yards out. The ball was sent to the left side of the goal, just eluding Boise State goalkeeper Maddy McDevitt enough to sneak inside for the UNLV score in the 39th minute. That would be the halftime lead as well, though UNLV nearly scored again on another low shot to the corner. This time, however, Brittney Gideon’s shot was deflected out at the last second by McDevitt. Those were the only two shots of the half for UNLV, while the Broncos finished with four.
The shot edge was even more in favor for the visitors in the second half, 9-3, but they were kept off the scoreboard until the final minutes. Boise State pushed up the attack on the left side before KT Clayton sent in a pass from the left side to the middle of the box. Brooke Heidemann was there to direct the ball to the right side of the goal, giving her a league-high six goals on the year, and tying the score at 1-1 in the 84th minute. With time running out before the game would go into overtime, the Rebels would answer the Bronco score. This one was again set up by a BSU foul, leading to a free kick that was taken by Jenn Wolfe. The senior sent a high shot towards the goal that McDevitt lost track of before it eventually hit the crossbar, and bounced down into the box in front of Magnin. The freshman then blasted a shot to the far left post, giving UNLV a 2-1 edge, in the 87th minute. UNLV then held on defense to claim the win.
The final shot total was 13-5 in favor of Boise State, 7-3 in shots on goal. Kylie Wassell was strong in goal for UNLV all night long, coming up with six saves for the Rebels. McDevitt meanwhile finished with one stop in the game. Corner kicks were also 3-1 in favor of BSU.
UNLV will play a second home game this weekend, hosting new league rival Utah State on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 pm at Peter Johann Field.

UNLV Weekly Release
All About The Rebels
UNLV has earned results on the field despite the long road trip, as its 5-3-2 mark tied Boise State for the best non-conference record. That’s been helped by the top-rated offense in the league, with the Rebels ranking first in points, goals and assists.
Leading the Rebels this season is senior forward Jenn Wolfe, with four goals and three assists for a league-best 11 points. Sophomore midfielder Susie Bernal is at the top of the MW in assists, while senior goalkeeper Kylie Wassell continues her outstanding career in the goal, and has posted four shutouts this season.
The Rebels are 4-0-1 all-time against the Broncos, with the tie coming in last year’s meeting in Boise. UNLV is 5-1 in the series with Utah State, with the lone loss coming in the 1999 season. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2005, a 2-1 UNLV win in Logan on Sept. 2.
Scouting Boise State
The Broncos recently had a six-game unbeaten streak snapped with a loss at No. 13 Baylor, but prior to that game BSU had recorded wins over Arizona State and Washington as well as a tie against Washington State. Boise State is 4-3 in the road this year, and this will be the team’s fifth straight away from its home field. Leading the team this season is sophomore Brooke Heidemann with 11 points and a MW-high five goals. Ashley Hruby is next on the team with five points (one goal, three assists), and a pair of players have two goals each. In goal is Maddy Mcdevitt, who had a league-high five shutouts and a 0.74 GAA.
Scouting Utah State
The Aggies started out the season 4-0-1 record, but have lost three of their last four games. In fact, Utah State has gone three straight games without a goal, after losing 3-2 in overtime to No. 25 Arkansas on Sept. 13 in Logan. Taryn Rose is the team’s top scorer, with six points to rank ninth in the Mountain West, while her three goals ties her for sixth. Kylie Dibbs and Lauren Roundy each have two goals as well for the Aggies. Jeannie Woller currently ranks first in the MW in saves with 49, and has a 1.16 GAA with four shutouts this season.
Next Time Out
The Rebels will be on the road for a pair of conference games in the state of California. First up will be a Friday, Oct. 4 contest at San Jose State at 7 pm, followed by a Sunday, Oct. 6 game at Fresno State at 1 pm. Both games will be shown on the Mountain West Network, available at UNLVRebels.com.
The UNLV men’s tennis team will open its 2013 spring dual-match season by hosting two matches this weekend.
The Rebels welcome future Mountain West foe Utah State Friday for a match that begins with doubles play at noon. UNLV will then play Northern Arizona on Sunday at noon. All matches at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on campus are free of charge to fans.
This weekend’s matches are part of a five-date homestand to begin 2013. The complete schedule is available at www.unlvrebels.com.
“We’re excited to get going on the season,” said head coach Owen Hambrook, who is in his 10th year leading the men’s program. “We’ve been working hard getting ready and we are looking forward to seeing a couple of new guys on the team make their debut this weekend.”
