dirty chick

“One month into our stay, we’d managed to dispatch most of our charges. We executed the chickens. One of the cats disappeared, clearly disgusted with our urban ways. And Lucky [the cow] was escaping almost daily. It seemed we didn’t have much of a talent for farming. And we still had eleven months to go.” Antonia Murphy, you might say, is an unlikely farmer. Born and bred in San Francisco, she spent much of her life as a liberal urban cliché, and her interactions with the animal kingdom rarely extended past dinner. But then she became a mother. And when her eldest son was born with a rare, mysterious genetic condition, she and her husband, Peter, decided it was time to slow down and find a supportive community. So the Murphys moved to Purua, New Zealand – a rural area where most residents maintained private farms, complete with chickens, goats, and (this being New Zealand) sheep. The result was a comic disaster, and when one day their son had a medical crisis, it was also a little bit terrifying.

Dirty Chick chronicles Antonia’s first year of life as an artisan farmer. Having bought into the myth that farming is a peaceful, fulfilling endeavor that allows one to commune with nature and live the way humans were meant to live, Antonia soon realized that the reality is far dirtier and way more disgusting than she ever imagined. Among the things she learned the hard way: Cows are prone to a number of serious bowel ailments, goat mating involves an astounding amount of urine, and roosters are complete and unredeemable assholes. But for all its traumas, Antonia quickly embraced farm life, getting drunk on homemade wine (it doesn’t cause hangovers!), making cheese (except for the cat hair, it’s a tremendously satisfying hobby), and raising a baby lamb (which was addictively cute until it grew into a sheep).

Brandon Sanderson, the number one New York Times best-selling author of Words of Radiance, co-author of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, and creator of the internationally best-selling Mistborn Trilogy, presents the second book in the Reckoners series: Firefight, the sequel to the #1 best seller Steelheart. Newcago is free. They told David it was impossible, that even the Reckoners had never killed a High Epic. Yet Steelheart – invincible, immortal, unconquerable – is dead. And he died by David’s hand.

Eliminating Steelheart was supposed to make life simpler. Instead, it only made David realize he has questions. Big ones. And no one in Newcago can give him answers.

Babylon Restored, the city formerly known as the borough of Manhattan, has possibilities, though. Ruled by the mysterious High Epic Regalia, Babylon Restored is flooded and miserable, but David is sure it’s the path that will lead him to what he needs to find. Entering a city oppressed by a High Epic despot is risky, but David’s willing to take the gamble. Because killing Steelheart left a hole in David’s heart. A hole where his thirst for vengeance once lived. Somehow, he filled that hole with another Epic – Firefight. And now he will go on a quest darker and even more dangerous than the fight against Steelheart to find her, and to get his answers.

This year, Audible Studios released the audiobook version of AGE OF AMBITION: CHASING FORTUNE, TRUTH, AND FAITH IN THE NEW CHINA by journalist Evan Osnos, narrated by the author and George Backman. Last month, the masterful print edition won the National Book Award. In audio, the fascinating findings of Osnos, the longtime Beijing correspondent for the New Yorker, become clearer and more understandable as they are read directly to the reader by the author and Backman, an extremely skilled narrator of nonfiction.

Publisher’s Summary

A vibrant, colorful, and revelatory inner history of China during a moment of profound transformation.

From abroad, we often see China as a caricature: a nation of pragmatic plutocrats and ruthlessly dedicated students destined to rule the global economy – or an addled Goliath, riddled with corruption and on the edge of stagnation. What we don’t see is how both powerful and ordinary people are remaking their lives as their country dramatically changes.

As the Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker, Evan Osnos was on the ground in China for years, witness to profound political, economic, and cultural upheaval. In Age of Ambition, he describes the greatest collision taking place in that country: the clash between the rise of the individual and the Communist Party’s struggle to retain control. He asks probing questions: Why does a government with more success lifting people from poverty than any civilization in history choose to put strict restraints on freedom of expression? Why do millions of young Chinese professionals – fluent in English and devoted to Western pop culture – consider themselves “angry youth”, dedicated to resisting the West’s influence? How are Chinese from all strata finding meaning after two decades of the relentless pursuit of wealth?

Writing with great narrative verve and a keen sense of irony, Osnos follows the moving stories of everyday people and reveals life in the new China to be a battleground between aspiration and authoritarianism, in which only one can prevail.

What the Critics Say

“Evan Osnos, Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker (2005-2010) has written an outstanding book covering the political, economic, and cultural aspects of China. Narrating his own work is a wonderful addition as his command of Mandarin and in-depth knowledge of the country are apparent. Observations and interviews are crisp and timely whether the subject is a billionaire online matchmaker or the dissident Ai Wei Wei, who has many critical and pithy comments. Osnos’s apt delivery of humor–both his own and Chinese–adds authenticity and fun. Most revealing are his observations during a European tour with a Chinese group. (He was the only non-Chinese person.) Osnos excels at getting people to open up; he then adds luster with his spirited delivery of their thoughts.” (AudioFile)

Tim Robbins’s Performance of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 Now Available as an Audio Download at Audible.com

I just finished listening to the Audible.com classic Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit 451 narrated by Tim Robbins. It’s been about 40 years since I read this book and I don’t think I understood it well at that time. Tim Robbins is one of my favorite actors and the way he presents this book gives it a great dimensional feel and character recognition during the read. With governmental and social restrictions at an all time high this book is more relevant than it has ever been. Audible.com made this easy to download and listen to on my tablet and I easily finished it in a weekend. So if you’re traveling for the holidays get this classic or any of your favorite Ray Bradbury tales from Audible.com and enjoy. Jay Reppart – Vegas24Seven.com

Audible, Inc., the world’s largest seller and producer of downloadable audiobooks and other spoken-word content, today announced the release of Tim Robbins’s audio interpretation of Ray Bradbury’s classic work of speculative fiction, Fahrenheit 451. This new performance by Academy Award winner Robbins is one of four definitive recordings of the Bradbury canon produced by Audible Studios in association with the Bradbury Estate. Other Bradbury titles also newly available are Something Wicked This Way Comes, narrated by Christian Rummel, and The Martian Chronicles, narrated by Mark Boyett, as well as a new recording by Jonathan Davis of the Bradbury story “The Playground,” which was part of the original hardcover edition of Fahrenheit 451. To download any of these audiobooks, visit www.audible.com/bradbury.

“I love this book. Fahrenheit 451 is such an important book in so many ways and it’s so great to revisit it,” said Robbins. “The whole format of audiobooks is, in a way, making sure that Fahrenheit 451 doesn’t happen. It’s creating another way for literature to survive. If the audiobook is heard, more people will discover what is a great book.”

farenheit451

“Tim Robbins’s performance of Fahrenheit 451 is further evidence of his status as one of our finest actors,” said Audible EVP and Publisher Beth Anderson. “The way this quartet of terrific acting talent breathes new life into these important works of literature makes for a multidimensional experience of Bradbury’s language—and incredible listening.”

Among the acclaimed actors who have performed other works of literature for Audible are Bryan Cranston, Dan Stevens, Dustin Hoffman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon. In 2013, Audible Studios won its first Grammy Award, for its production of Janis Ian’s memoir Society’s Child, and also won the Audie Award for Audiobook of the Year, for Colin Firth’s performance of Graham Greene’s The End of the Affair.

Audible invented and commercialized the first digital audio player in 1997, and has since been at the forefront of the explosively growing audiobook download segment. In 2013, Audible members downloaded an average of more than 17 books over the course of a year, the equivalent of close to 600 million listening hours.
