Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas Summer Concert Series Continues
with Free Concert June 13

Go Back to the 1980s with Performances by – Martha Davis and The Motels, The Tubes & The Smithereens

Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas summer concert series continues as Martha Davis and The Motels, The Tubes and The Smithereens are set to perform a free concert on the 3rd Street Stage on Saturday, June 13 at 9 p.m. Every May-September, Fremont Street Experience transforms Downtown Las Vegas into the hottest place to be with the annual Rock of Vegas summer concert series; one of the most popular summertime events in Las Vegas featuring rockin’ nightly entertainment, free headliner concerts and Viva Vision shows.

Martha Davis and The Motels
Martha Davis was born and raised in Berkeley, California, she moved to Los Angeles in the early ‘70s, along with the first incarnation of The Motels. In 1982, the Motels released the album All Four One. The smash single “Only The Lonely” rocketed into the Top 10, immediately propelling the album to gold status. The group dominated the music scene and was voted Best Performance for “Only The Lonely” at the 1982 American Music Awards. In 1983, the Little Robbers album went gold due to the Top 10 single “Suddenly Last Summer,” as well as their Top 40 hit “Remember The Nights.” In 1985, the “Shock” album yielded the Top 20 hit, “Shame” and 1987 saw the release of Martha’s first solo effort, Policy. The current band line-up includes Brady Wills on bass, Nicholas Johns on keyboards, and former Gnarls Barkley touring band members Eric Gardner and Clint Walsh on drums and lead guitar, respectively. They have been together for 10 years, longer than the original Motels. Martha continues her passion for writing, currently co-writing several songs for the new album with her current band, as well as an exciting and diverse group of collaborators.

The Tubes
The Tubes originated in Phoenix, Arizona in the late ’60s, where Bill Spooner (guitar), Vince Welnick (keyboards) and Rick Anderson  (bass) formed ‘The Beans’ (alternately billing themselves as the Radar Men from Uranus). The aspiring trio eventually relocated to the post-psychedelic haze of San Francisco in 1972. The first real incarnation of ‘The Tubes’ was born when the original members recruited Michael Cotten (keyboards) and former roadie Fee Waybill (lead vocals). By 1981 the Tubes signed to Capitol Records and released the David Foster produced ‘Completion Backwards Principle. Both Talk to Ya Later and Don’t Want to Wait Anymore earned them significant airplay on American radio, while the album became the Tubes’ first Top 40 chart entry. Two years later, in 1983, due to a provocative video, the single ‘She’s a Beauty’ reached the Top Ten, and pushed the Tubes’ sixth studio album, ‘Outside/Inside’ into the U.S. Top 20. The Tubes have always managed to expose, enlighten and entertain audiences worldwide by combining art with trash, comedy with tragedy, and innovative rock theatre with consummate musicianship.

The Smithereens
Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken and original bassist Mike Mesaros grew up in Carteret, New Jersey, forging a friendship as teenagers through a mutual love of ’60s rock ‘n’ roll and other vintage sounds. After meeting the similarly inclined  Pat DiNizio, the four formed the Smithereens, and won some local renown with a pair of independently released EPs, 1980’s Girls About Town and 1983’s Beauty and Sadness. The Smithereens were already a seasoned live act by the time they achieved surprise commercial success in 1986 with their first full album Especially for You, with spawned the MTV hits “Blood and Roses” and “Behind the Wall of Sleep.” The band continued to reap considerable airplay, critical acclaim and fan loyalty with the subsequent longplayers Green Thoughts, Smithereens 11, Blow Up, A Date with The Smithereens and God Save The Smithereens, which yielded such enduring numbers as “Only a Memory,” “House We Used to Live In,” “Drown in My Own Tears” and “A Girl Like You.”

The Riviera Hotel & Casino One-Bedroom Deluxe Suite Review & Video

The Riviera Hotel & Casino One-Bedroom Deluxe Suite

These gorgeous, spacious suites have a separate living area from the guest bedroom and include an additional powder room. Each suite comes with 32” and 42” flat screen televisions, pillow top mattresses, complimentary in-room safe, AM/FM alarm clock radio, iron and ironing board and hairdryer. Bathroom includes marble vanity and shower/tub combination.

All I can say is from the time we stepped out of the car to check in we were treated so well, and felt so special because of this. Everyone was so helpful and knowledgeable.

The Suite: Amazing! Large, clean, beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows with sweet views from the 23rd floor. The bathrooms have numerous amenities, clean, very roomy. Our view from the baclony was amazing!

The Bed, oh man the bed! That is where the relaxing came in. It is a heavenly cloud of a bed with luxurious sheets and pillows.  The living area was nice to have for use of the table, the couches and lounging. We love the old style Vegas atmosphere that the hotel is trying to preserve.
The Riviera Hotel & Casino has recently undergone a multi-phase renovation and we think you should stay there!

R Steak & Seafood Restaurant is in The Riviera Hotel & Casino. We had the pleasure of eating there too! The review and picture are coming soon!

Pat DiNizio, lead singer of The Smithereens, launches his latest show entitled Confessions of a Rock Star at Riviera Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The production is a hybrid of a one-man show, rock concert and multimedia event covering DiNizio’s 32-year career in rock and roll.

A live band performs the hits that shaped DiNizio’s childhood, paying tribute to his musical heroes such as Buddy Holly and The Beatles, and includes chart-topping songs from The Smithereens. Video screens show rare footage and photos that accompany the musical journey from life in New Jersey to rock and roll stardom.

“This show is a chance for me to pay tribute to the kings of rock and roll,” says DiNizio. “After more than three decades of performing, I am excited to bring this experience to the Las Vegas Strip and Riviera Hotel & Casino.”
