UNLV MEN AND WOMEN EARN CSCAA TEAM SCHOLAR AWARDS

Both the UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs were named to the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Scholar All-America team for the Spring 2020 Semester, the national organization announced Tuesday. UNLV was one of 461 institutions that were named to the list, and this marks the eighth time in the last nine semesters that the Rebel women’s program has earned Scholar recognition.

CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart noted: “No team was unaffected by this Spring’s pandemic but Athletic Director Reed-Francois and President Meana can and should be proud of their team and the work of Ben with the Rebels.”

The Spring Team Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher in the semester/quarter coinciding with the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

The CSCAA will announce its individual Scholar All-Americans next week.

TWO UNLV SWIMMERS EARN SCHOLAR ALL-AMERICA HONORS

Five more Rebels named to the Honorable Mention team

UNLV swimmers Rachel Dixon and David Szele were named Scholar All-America by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA), it was announced by the organization on Monday. In addition, a total of five more student-athletes from UNLV were named as Scholar All-America Honorable Mention, two from the women’s squad, and three from the UNLV men. The CSCAA Scholar All-America program is supported by Nike Swim.

Dixon, a native of Las Cruces, N.M. that graduated this past May, swam at the NCAA championships for the second time in three years as an individual in the 50 free. The UNLV record holder in the event, she finished 43rd in the event this year after placing 15th as a sophomore. At the Mountain West Championships in February of this year, she posted two top-eight individual finishes, including runner-up in the 50 free

Szele, a Budapest, Hungary native who was also a senior for the Rebels this past season, earned a pair of Honorable Mention All-American Relay honors, while helping UNLV to tie for its highest-ever finish at the NCAA Championships at 19th. Szele swam the breast legs on both the 200 and 400 medley relays, each of which placed 15th overall. That gave him a total of four HM All-American honors in his career, after swimming on the Rebels’ 400 medley relay and placing 15th in the 100 breast as a junior at the national championships.

Earning Honorable Mention status from the women’s squad was Elena Gavrilova and Jessica Heim. Batka Balint, Joe Riggert and Matt Roe represented the UNLV men in receiving Honorable Mention recognition.

The Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative, or term grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic term coinciding with their respective NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and have qualified for and competed at the Championship.
 
The Honorable Mention Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the semester, or cumulative average, and have achieved a “B” time standard but did not qualify or compete in their respective national championship.

UNLV MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SWIMMING BOTH EARN CSCAA ACADEMIC RECOGNITION

Rebel women honored as a top-five academic team in the nation

The success for UNLV swimming and diving was not limited to just the pool this past season, as both the men’s and women’s teams were recognized by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as their 2014 Spring Scholar All-America Team Awards (sponsored by Nike Swim) were announced on Thursday.

The Rebel women’s team in fact posted a 3.59 GPA over the spring semester that tied it for fifth-highest in the nation. The Rebel men meanwhile were also honored thanks to their 3.0 overall GPA for the spring, and they were one of 12 teams to both earn team academic awards while also finishing in the top 20 at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

UNLV MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING MOVES BACK INTO TOP 25 RANKINGS AT No. 23  

Thanks to an impressive showing in the UNLV Fall Invitational, the UNLV men’s swimming and diving team has moved back into the CSCAA (College Swim Coaches Association of America) Top 25 rankings, as the Rebels are No. 23 in this week’s poll which was released on Thursday morning. Previously the Rebels were ranked 25th in the the second set of the bi-weekly rankings that came out on Nov. 6.

The Rebels posted several national top 20 times at the three-day UNLV Fall Invitational that was held on Nov. 21-23, where the Rebels came in second place to then No. 5 Stanford. Sophomore Dillon Virva is currently tied second in the nation in the 50 free with a school record time of 19.37, while four Rebel relays are ranked in the top 20. The 200 free and 200 medley relays are both ranked 11th in the nation, while UNLV’s 400 free relay has the 15th fastest time this season, and the 400 medley relay comes in at 20th.

UNLV returns to action with a road dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 am at UC Santa Barbara.

UNLV MEN’S SWIMMING AND DIVING REJOINS TOP 25 THIS WEEK AT No. 25

Rebels make second appearance this year in the rankings

The UNLV men’s swimming and diving team has returned to the national rankings at No. 25 thanks to an eight-meet win streak to end the regular season, as the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division 1 Team Rankings were released on Wednesday morning. Previously the Rebels were ranked 23rd in the Dec. 5 poll, before dropping out for two weeks.

UNLV finished the regular season at 8-1, with the lone loss coming in the season-opener to Arizona, currently ranked in a tie for ninth in the poll. The eight-win streak to end the season includes wins over Mountain Pacific Sports Federation members Air Force, BYU, CSU Bakersfield, Denver, and most recently Wyoming, who had entered the Feb. 2 meet undefeated at 8-0 before falling by 25 points to the Rebels.

The Rebels have three swimmers that rank in the top 16 in the nation in their events. Cody Roberts currently holds the nation’s fourth fastest time in the 100 fly in a time of 46.76. Giacomo Gremizzi is ranked sixth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:45.58, while David Szele is 12th in the 100 breast (53.37). UNLV is also ranked in the top 16 in three relays as well, seventh in the 400 medley (3:11.43), eighth in the 200 medley (1:26.84), while the 800 free relay (6:29.43) has the 11th fastest time in the nation thus far this season.

The Rebels will return to action in the MPSF Championship meet, held Feb. 20-23 at East LA College in Monterey Park, Calif.
