Don McLean To Be Awarded George & Ira Gershwin Award For Lifetime Musical Achievement On May 17

McLean also announces Father’s Day weekend concert at Elvis Presley’s Graceland on June 15

Don McLean, America’s legendary singer and songwriter, will be awarded the George and Ira Gershwin Award for lifetime musical achievement on behalf of the Student Alumni Association of UCLA. In recognition of George and Ira Gershwin’s contributions to American music and in honor of their gift to UCLA, the UCLA Student Alumni Association established the annual George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement in 1988.

“I am such a great lover and admirer of the work of the Gershwin’s that to receive this award is a thrill,” said McLean. “In popular music the modernism of their music put them in a class by themselves.”

McLean will accept the award on Friday, May 17 at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, during UCLA’s 2019 Spring Sing event. The 31st edition of the award is in recognition of the tremendous contributions McLean has made to the music industry throughout his career. Reserved for influential musical figures, past recipients include Tom Petty, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, James Taylor, Julie Andrews, Lionel Richie, Anthony Kiedis, The Who and last year’s recipient, Linkin Park.

“On behalf of UCLA, I am thrilled to present the 2019 George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement to Don McLean,” said Award Director, Isabella Dohil, “whose poetic lyrics have transcended time and remain a staple of American culture. Don’s contributions to music have been profound and he continues to capture audiences both young and old through his dynamic storytelling.”

McLean To Perform During Father’s Day Weekend Concerts At Elvis Presley’s Graceland
Memphis is recognized worldwide as the “home of the Blues” and the “birthplace of Rock ‘N’ Roll,” and Graceland’s Father’s Day Weekend Celebration lives up to those honors with multi-platinum singer/songwriter Don McLean and his chart-topping hits will perform on the Soundstage at Graceland on Saturday, June 15.

“I will be at Graceland for a Fathers Day concert and I will sing ‘And I Love You So,’ a song I wrote which Elvis sang during the last year of his life,” said McLean. “It also appears on his album, Today, released in 1975.”

Throughout the weekend, guests will be treated to tours of the iconic Graceland mansion, Elvis Presley’s Memphis™ entertainment complex and experience the brand-new Graceland Exhibition Center featuring three fantastic exhibits: Muhammad Ali: Greatest of All Time, Memphis Music Legends and A Century of the American Motorcycle. Since first hitting the charts in 1971, Don McLean has amassed over 40 gold and platinum records world-wide and, in 2004, was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. Classic hits like “American Pie”, “Vincent (Starry Starry Night)”, “Castles in the Air”, “And I Love You So”, “Crossroads” and “The Grave” propelled McLean into the mainstream. Many of his songs have been recorded and sung by musicians from every genre, including Madonna‘s No. 1 recording of “American Pie” in 2000, George Michael’s rendition of “The Grave” in 2003, and James Blake’s version of “Vincent (Starry Starry Night).”

Having recently honored the 60th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s death, and receiving Million-Air certifications from BMI for over 5 million certified airplays of “American Pie” and 3 million certified airplays for “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” McLean continues to bring his classic hit songs to stages around the world.

About Don McLean:
A New York native, Don McLean is one of the most revered and respected songwriters in American history. After paying his dues in the New York club scene in the late ‘60s, he went on to score mega-hits like “American Pie,” “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” “Castles in the Air” and many more. In 2004, McLean was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame by country superstar Garth Brooks. In 2000, “American Pie” was named one of the Top 5 Songs of the 20th Century by the RIAA and in 2002 was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. In 2015, one of McLean’s four handwritten manuscripts of the lyrics to “American Pie” was auctioned by Christies, selling for just over $1.2 Million. 2017 brought a huge honor when his iconic song was inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry, joining less than 500 works including “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” With over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide, McLean’s prowess for writing timeless songs was again captured on his 2018 album, Botanical Gardens, as he artfully weaves country, Americana, folk, and boot stomping rock for an eclectic, yet American sound that he is known for.

Legendary American singer, songwriter, and performer Don McLean recently signed a third extension to his ongoing administration deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, worth $4.5 Million. McLean, whose relationship with UMPG goes back to 1990, had this to say on the deal, “Universal has done a great job at getting my songs in movies and TV shows, and they are a first class, worldwide organization.”

With songs like “American Pie,” “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” “And I Love You So,” “Castles in The Air,” “The Grave,” and many more, McLean is one of many hit-makers represented by UMPG such as Adele, U2, Elton John, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond and Pearl Jam, among many others.

McLean is also readying for the second leg of his 2018 World tour which begins October 1 in Essen, Germany, and will take him through Switzerland, Holland, Belgium, Finland and Norway. McLean’s previous European tour in June of this year yielded plenty of sold out shows and praise from the European press.

Several of Don’s iconic hits, including “American Pie” and “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night),” continue to be added to various popular Spotify playlists, such as: Rock Anthems, All Out 70’s, 70’s Road Trip, Classic Acoustic, Family Road Trip and Backyard BBQ. Together, these playlists have nearly 9 million user streams.

McLean also recently became a celebrity ambassador for Teen Cancer America (TCA) after attending and performing at one of the charity’s Backyard Concert Series events in August. McLean was invited by Teen Cancer America charity founder Roger Daltrey of The Who to the star-studded event which raised over $3.5 Million for the charity that evening. McLean also rehearsed with GRAMMY Award winner Ed Sheeran backstage that evening, which the video went viral on the internet soon after. Later that evening Sheeran would join McLean onstage for a special duet performance of his hit song “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night).”

With over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide, McLean’s prowess for writing timeless songs has once again been captured on Botanical Gardens, his newest album, released in March, 2018 on BMG. McLean artfully weaves country, Americana, folk, and boot-stomping rock for an eclectic, yet American sound that he is known for. Botanical Gardens is his 19th studio album and first in 8 years, is arguably one of Don’s most reflective to date.

As he characterizes it, “The inspiration for the project started years ago when I would walk in the beautiful gardens in Sydney, Australia near the Opera House. I would dream young dreams and it was a comfort and an inspiration. I was always young inside, like we all are, and I felt it again there.” Further reflecting on the record, Don says, “the whole album really revolves around the title song. Later on I realized that the gardens are really a metaphorical heaven, and there’s a kind of death and rebirth.”

Don’s hometown of New Rochelle, New York set to honor Don on March 21, along with an appearance on BBC’s Breakfast News March 15 with more BBC Radio interviews this week and major media appearances scheduled in New York City March 21 & 22.

Iconic American singer, songwriter and performer Don McLean is set to release his new album Botanical Gardens on March 23, 2018 via BMG.

Don is set to appear on BBC Breakfast Thursday, March 15 along with multiple BBC radio stations and Absolute Radio in the U.K.

“Greetings from London where we are promoting my new album ‘Botanical Gardens’, said McLean. “The reception has been wonderful and I look forward to coming to New York next, where we will perform at City Winery on Friday the 23rd! I think this new album will do very well. Take a listen to “Ain’t She a Honey” and “Total Eclipse of The Sun” – I hope it will be something people like.”

Don is profiled in a new episode of Heartland TV’s More Than The Music airing Tuesday, March 20 at 8:00pm ET/PT as well as Heartland’s Roku channel and online at watchheartlandtv.com, with an encore viewing Sunday, March 25 at 8:00pm ET/PT.

On March 21, Don’s hometown of New Rochelle, New York will have its own piece of “American Pie” when the world-renowned singer and songwriter will dedicate his existing plaque at the city’s Walk of Fame in Ruby Dee Park at Library Green. The ceremony is open to the public, beginning at 4 PM, and will be hosted by Jennifer Lanser, Executive Director of the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce. Later that evening the city will honor McLean with a Lifetime Achievement Award at their annual Dinner Dance and Awards ceremony at 7pm. For more information or to RSVP, contact the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce at info@newrochamber.org, infonewrochamber@gmail.com, call 914-632-5700 or visit newrochellechamber.org.

Don then returns to New York City with appearances scheduled at ABC News Radio, WABC’s Bernie & Sid, iHeart/Premiere Radio Networks, Fox News Radio, United Stations, LifeMinute, and more, ending the week with a performance at City Winery Friday, March 23.

With over 40 gold and platinum records worldwide, his prowess for writing timeless songs is once again captured on Botanical Gardens, as he artfully weaves country, Americana, folk, and boot stomping rock for an eclectic, yet American sound that he is known for.

Botanical Gardens, his 19th studio album and first in 8 years, is arguably one of Don’s most reflective to date. Later on I realized that the gardens are really a metaphorical heaven, and there’s a kind of death and rebirth.

Intimacy can be found at the heart of this record, with Don penning personal numbers looking back on a life well-lived, as well as his observations on youth and love. Recording at Watershed Studios in Nashville also allowed a different kind of intimacy for Don and his band, as they were made to “play close and feel the music”, resulting in a raw, yet tight sound throughout.

In nearly 50 years, Don’s songs have become an iconic staple of American music. His music has been performed by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Madonna, Fred Astaire, Drake, James Blake, Ellie Goulding, Chet Atkins, Garth Brooks, Weird Al Yankovic, George Michael, Josh Groban, Coolio and Ed Sheeran.

Don McLean Becomes A BMI Multi Million-Air

DON MCLEAN BECOMES A BMI MULTI MILLION-AIR

McLean’s Classic Hits “American Pie” and “Vincent” Receive Certified Airplay Awards

Don McLean, one of America’s best-known singer-songwriters, was recently honored with two awards from BMI (Broadcast Music,Inc.), recognizing his long-standing career and outstanding contributions to the music industry through the iconic hits “American Pie” and “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night).”

Don was presented with his Million-Air certifications at the BMI offices in Nashville, Tennessee and accepted the coveted awards from BMI executives Jody Williams, (VP, Creative) and Mason Hunter (Assistant VP, Creative). A Million-Air Award is given to songwriters, composers, and publishers whose songs accumulate over one million U.S. broadcast performances. The acknowledgement is a mark of praise. The two tracks honored, played back-to-back, would total nearly 56 years of continuous airplay.

Among the honors he received were five (5) million certified airplays for “American Pie” and three (3) million certified airplays for “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night).”

“I was delighted to receive certifications from BMI of these millions of airplays for my songs ‘Vincent’ and ‘American Pie,’ says McLean. “I sincerely thank the radio folks out there and the public for their loyalty to me and my music for so many years. I am very thankful to everybody.”

“It was a pleasure to present Don with his Million Air certificates. He is one of the cornerstones of the singer-songwriter movement of the 1970s,” says Mason Hunter, AVP, Creative with BMI. “‘American Pie’ is one of those songs that everyone has an emotional reaction to and we were proud to acknowledge both it and ‘Vincent.’”

“American Pie” was recorded and made its debut in 1971. It quickly became a nostalgic staple in American music songwriting with its evocative popularization of the phrase “The Day the Music Died,” referencing the 1959 plane crash of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson.

Forty-seven years after its release, there has never been another song quite like “American Pie.” While a product of its era, pinpointing a precise moment of cultural change in the shattered hopes of baby boomers, its impact continues to reverberate down the years with a poignancy and relevance that hasn’t diminished.

“Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” also was released in 1971, and is a tribute to the late Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night. The song reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart, and No. 12 in the US. It also peaked at No. 2 on the Easy Listening chart.

The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum in Nashville recently unveiled McLean’s rare composition manuscript pages of “American Pie” and “Vincent” lyrics, as well as his custom Martin D-40DM signature acoustic guitar, as part of their permanent Sing Me Back Home exhibit. The display will be available to view through June.

Legendary Artists Don McLean and Judy Collins to Perform at The Orleans Showroom July 18-19

Timeless artists Don McLean and Judy Collins will perform classic American hits at The Orleans Showroom July 18 and 19.

In 1969, McLean recorded his first album “Tapestry” in Berkeley, Calif. Student riots were going on outside the studio as Don was singing “And I Love You So” inside. The album was first released by Mediarts and achieved commercial success.

His transition to international stardom began with the release of “American Pie” in 1971. A month later, McLean’s song first played on New York’s WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM to mark the closing of The Fillmore East, the famous New York concert hall. Thirty years later, the song was voted # 5 in a poll of the “365 Songs of the Century” compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In 2004, McLean was inducted into The Songwriters Hall of Fame and has charted 40 gold and platinum records during his career.

Collins’ rendition of Joni Mitchell’s, “Both Sides Now” from her landmark 1967 album, “Wildflowers,” has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical “A Little Night Music,” won “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy Awards.

In 2008, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Arlo Gutherie, Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album “Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins.”

Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets start at $39.95, plus tax and convenience fees, and can be purchased at any Boyd Gaming Box Office, by calling 702.284.7777, or visiting www.orleanscasino.com.
