Four Comedians Walk Into the Riviera Comedy Club…and One Earns Title of Next Comic Headliner

Nationwide search finale set for Saturday, Apr. 20, at 10 p.m. – the 58th Anniversary of the Riviera Casino & Hotel

The Riviera Casino & Hotel’s search for its next comic headliner is down to four comedians. After receiving 226 submissions from all over the country and holding four semifinal competitions, the final four comics are set to take the stage in a winner-takes-all showdown this Saturday at 10 p.m. inside the Riviera Comedy Club. The grand prize winner earns a one-week headlining gig on the Las Vegas Strip at the iconic club. The final four contestants are: Mike Merrill from Panorama City, Calif.; Matthew Broome from Scottsdale, Ariz.; Jared Stern from Washington, D.C.; and Maria Walsh from Long Island, N.Y. The comic search finale coincides with the 58th Anniversary of the Riviera Casino & Hotel, which was opened by Liberace on Apr. 20, 1955.

“These four finalists have proven to be hilarious and energetic and we would be honored to have any of them in the spotlight at the Riviera Comedy Club,” says Mark Massimino, director of entertainment at Riviera Casino & Hotel. “They have impressed our panel of judges, which includes America’s Got Talent runner-up, Tom Cotter, so each of these comics have earned the right to compete in the finals.”

The finale is free and open to the public. The comics take the stage Saturday, Apr. 20, at 10 p.m.

Riviera Nationwide Comic Search Welcomes First Finalist

The Riviera Casino & Hotel search for its next comic headliner had the first of four semifinal competitions over the weekend. Mike Merrill from Panorama City, CA, beat out three other comedians for a spot in the finale on April 20. More than 225 entries were accepted nationwide, with 16 of those being selected as semifinalists. The grand prize winner gets a one week headlining gig at the Riviera Comedy Club.

Semifinals are being held on Saturday, Mar. 23, April 6 and 13, at 10pm each night. Four semifinalists compete each Saturday and one winner each week will move onto the finale. The competitions are free to the public.

First four semifinalists from 226 submissions take the stage Saturday, Mar. 23, at 10 p.m.

The Riviera Casino & Hotel’s search for its next comic headliner has reached the semifinal level as 16 people from around the country have been selected out of 226 entries to compete in four events beginning Saturday, Mar. 23. All comedians, both amateur and professional, were asked to submit a 3-5 minute video with the winner earning a one-week headlining gig at the iconic Riviera Comedy Club. Four comedians will perform per night on Mar. 23 and 30, Apr. 6 and 13 at 10 p.m. One winner from each semifinal will compete in the finale on Saturday, Apr. 20, to coincide with the 58th Anniversary of the opening of the Riviera Casino & Hotel. All of these competitions are open to the public and free to attend.

The Riviera Casino & Hotel has welcomed some of the funniest people onstage at the Riviera Comedy Club since opening in 1955, from Bob Hope and George Carlin to Gallagher and Andrew Dice Clay. Now the iconic club is looking to give one rising star the shot to be a featured comic on the Las Vegas Strip. A total of 16 comedians will be selected from submitted entries and invited to perform in a weekly, live competition each Saturday from Mar. 23 – Apr. 13 at 10 p.m. The winner of each of the four live performances will compete for the title of “Riviera Featured Comic” during the finale on Saturday, Apr. 20.

“There are genuinely funny people out there, whether novices or experienced comedians, who are just looking for their big break, and we’re inviting those funny people from around the country to join the competition,” says Mark Massimino, director of entertainment at Riviera Casino & Hotel. “Winning this competition would be a great resume builder for any comedian, and who knows, we may even find a new regular headliner.”

Experiencing an evening of comedy with Jimmie ‘JJ’ Walker, Carla Rea and Greg Vaccariello, among others, now costs $19.99 with no additional fees. The Riviera Comedy Club also welcomes Nevada residents for only $10 with local ID. The locals rate is only available at the Riviera Box Office.
