22 Shriners Hospitals for Children Patients to Serve as Standard Bears During Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

22 Shriners Hospitals for Children Patients To serve As
Standard Bearers During Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Shriners Hospitals for Children gives patients the experience of a lifetime at the 2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas

A patient from each of the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children will have the experience of a lifetime in October when they represent their local hospitals as standard bearers at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open during the tournament’s final two rounds, Oct. 5-6.

The patients, ranging in age from 13-19, have demonstrated great courage and determination in recovering from orthopedic conditions, burns and cleft lip and palate. Each patient has an inspiring story to share and was nominated to give them an experience they’ll never forget not only spending a weekend at a PGA tournament, but also meeting fellow patients.

As standard bearers, they will carry the scores of the PGA TOUR players during the final two rounds of the tournament for a rare, “inside the ropes” experience. In addition to sharing how Shriners Hospitals for Children has transformed their lives, they will also have the opportunity to interact and engage with the PGA TOUR professionals and show them that the event is much more than just a golf tournament.

“Our patients are so excited to have the chance to represent their ‘home’ hospitals at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and to meet patients from other Shriners Hospitals throughout the country,” said Ed Stolze, board member and chairman of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open committee. “This is a memorable experience for all involved and the friendships and close bonds they form will be life-long.”

To help defray the costs of sending 22 patients to Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Shriners Hospitals are conducting their third annual #FundraiseFORELove campaign. Each patient has a special fundraising website that includes their biography. #FundraiseFORELove donations for individual standard bearers can be made online now at https://donate.lovetotherescue.org/campaign/standard-bearer-campaign/c188872

“The goal of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is to raise awareness of the great medical care provided every day at Shriners Hospitals for Children locations throughout North America and around the world through outreach clinics and telehealth sites. The amazing work these hospitals do helps transform the lives of children, regardless of a family’s ability to pay,” remarked Patrick Lindsey, executive director of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. “We want to provide these children with an opportunity to see some of the best golfers in the world compete here in Las Vegas and create lasting memories.”

Standard bearers include:

Hasi Boston
Griffin Chicago
Joy Cincinnati, Ohio
Landon Erie, Pennsylvania
Paige Galveston, Texas

22 Shriners Hospitals For Children Patients To Serve As Standard Bearers During Shriners Hospitals For Children Open

22 Shriners Hospitals for Children Patients To serve As
Standard Bearers During Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

Shriners Hospitals for Children gives patients the experience of a lifetime at the 2018 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas

A patient from each of the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children will have the experience of a lifetime in November when they represent their local hospitals as standard bearers at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open during the tournament’s final two rounds Nov. 3-4.

The patients, ranging in age from 13-19, have demonstrated great courage and determination in recovering from orthopaedic conditions, burns and cleft lip and palate. Each patient has an inspiring story to share and was nominated to give them an experience they’ll never forget: not only spending a weekend at a PGA tournament, but also meeting fellow patients.

As standard bearers, they will carry the scores of the PGA TOUR players during the final two rounds of the tournament for a rare, “inside the ropes” experience, in addition to having the opportunity to demonstrate how Shriners Hospitals for Children has transformed their lives.

“Our patients are so excited to have the chance to represent their ‘home’ hospitals at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, and to meet patients from other Shriners Hospitals throughout the country,” said Ed Stolze, Imperial First Ceremonial Master and chairman of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open committee. “These kids are so thrilled to have the chance to get up close and personal at a PGA TOUR tournament and to meet professional golfers. But the more lasting experience for them will be the friendships they make and the strong bonds they form with each other. It’s nothing short of heart-warming for us as Shriners. Many patients from previous years are still in close touch with each other.”

To help defray the costs of sending 22 patients to Las Vegas for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, Shriners Hospitals are conducting their second annual #FundraiseFORELove campaign. Each patient has a special fundraising website that includes their biography. #FundraiseFORELove donations for individual standard bearers can be made online now at https://donate.lovetotherescue.org/standard-bearer

“The goal of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is to raise awareness of the great medical care provided every day at Shriners Hospitals for Children locations throughout North America and around the world through outreach clinics. The work those hospitals do to help transform the lives of children with orthopedic conditions, burns, cleft lip and palate and spinal cord injuries has positioned Shriners Hospitals for Children as a global force for kids,” said Patrick Lindsey, executive director of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. “We want to provide these children with an opportunity to see some of the best golfers in the world compete here in Las Vegas and leave with lasting memories and friendships.”

Shriners Hospitals for Children Open Encourages Family Participation during  Burn Awareness Week, February 3-9

Recognizing Burn Awareness Week, February 3 -9, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open encourages Las Vegas families to participate in Shriners Hospitals for Children’s year-long efforts to prevent burn injuries through education.

This year’s focus is on teaching children to “Be Burn Aware,” especially at home. The effort will include materials for children, as well as both general awareness and scald prevention information for parents and other concerned adults. Scald injuries are one of the most prevalent, and preventable, types of burn injuries occurring in homes. Information and materials pertaining to the effort can be found on the health care system’s website dedicated to burn awareness and prevention, www.burnawareness.org.

Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds and fire-related injuries. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips.

The campaign again uses two popular and child-friendly characters to showcase and share our messages: Boots and Brewster – a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot. In the materials, the pair leads children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers, and how to easily correct or avoid them.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to improving the lives of children,” said Richard Kagan, M.D., chief of staff, Shriners Hospitals for Children — Cincinnati and member of the physician executive team. “Many burn injuries that occur in the home are easily preventable; we hope that our ongoing awareness and prevention campaigns will reduce the incidence of these injuries.
