The Mob Museum Debuts New Exhibit on Crime in Pop Culture

THE MOB MUSEUM DEBUTS “THE MOB ON TV,” EXHIBIT DEDICATED TO ORGANIZED CRIME IN POP CULTURE

The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, announces its newest exhibit: “The Mob on TV.” Comprising a collection of on-screen costumes and props from three iconic organized crime-based TV series – “The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire” and “Breaking Bad” – the exhibit is on view in the Museum’s retail store.

While Mob movies dominated the twentieth century with blockbuster hits such as “The Godfather,” “Goodfellas” and “Casino,” the depiction of the Mob on the small screen gave rise to some of the most iconic television series of the twenty-first century. Both “The Sopranos” andBreaking Bad” rank among the greatest series ever made, being named No. 1 and 3, respectively, by Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 greatest TV shows of all time.

Costumes and props in this collection include:

  • “Nucky” Thompson’s “Death Suit”: A three-piece suit worn in the series finale by Steve Buscemi, who played real-life Atlantic City crime boss Enoch “Nucky” Johnson in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.” The suit features a bullet hole where the character was shot. “Boardwalk Empire,” created by Terence Winter and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, chronicles organized crime in Atlantic City and beyond during Prohibition. The show’s five seasons (56 episodes) ran from 2010 to 2014.
  • “Breaking Bad” Hazmat Suit: The collection includes the hazmat suit and mask used during meth-cooking scenes worn by Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White in AMC’s “Breaking Bad.” This popular show ran from 2008 to 2013 for five seasons (62 episodes), following the transformation of White from a mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher to ruthless drug kingpin in Albuquerque, New Mexico. “Breaking Bad” was created by Vince Gilligan, who extended the story through a prequel AMC series, “Better Call Saul” and a sequel Netflix film, “El Camino.”
  • Tony Soprano in Casual Mode: A costume worn by James Gandolfini, in his role of Mob boss Tony Soprano in the HBO series “The Sopranos,” during season five, episode two. “The Sopranos,” created by David Chase, premiered in 1999 and ran for six seasons (86 episodes). The stories and characters were inspired by real-life Mob crime families in New Jersey.
  • “Boardwalk Empire” Tommy Gun: This submachine gun prop was used by “Nucky” Thompson in season two, episode eight of “Boardwalk Empire.” In the episode, Thompson receives crates of Tommy guns destined for the Irish Republican Army, which is rebelling against English rule. In episode nine, Thompson travels across the Atlantic to deliver the guns, which are smuggled inside a coffin that presumably holds his deceased father’s remains.
  • On-screen Gas Mask: This gas mask was worn on screen during meth-cooking scenes in “Breaking Bad.” The drug-making chemistry in the show was quite accurate, from the rudimentary production processes shown in the early episodes to the “super-lab” scenes in later seasons.

Golden Entertainment, Inc., to Bring Craft Beer Expertise and Craft Cocktails to The STRAT with BLVD & MAIN Taphouse and View Lounge

Golden Entertainment, Inc., to Bring
Craft Beer Expertise and Craft Cocktails to
The STRAT with BLVD & MAIN Taphouse and View Lounge
Stylish New Restaurant and Bar and Cocktail Lounge to Open this Spring

The STRAT Hotel, Casino and SkyPod will introduce something fresh on tap with the openings of BLVD & MAIN Taphouse and View Lounge on the main casino floor next to the new, state-of-the-art William Hill Sports Book. Both spots will open in late March, just in time for NHL playoffs and college basketball finals.

“BLVD & MAIN will be the top spot in town to grab beers and a bite while catching the game, whether you live in Vegas or you’re on vacation,” said Steve Arcana, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Golden Entertainment, LLC, the parent company of The STRAT. “The craft beer offerings, including our own beers, are fantastic. Chef Johannes Bernau has meticulously crafted the menu to take pub cuisine to a new, upscale, cutting-edge standard.”

The design of BLVD & MAIN and View will honor the Downtown Las Vegas Arts District with pieces commissioned by local artists. The art has been curated by Kevin Barry Fine Art and includes original pieces by local artists Manny Avila, Liz Lagumina, Biscuit Street Preacher and Devin Valdivia.

The 6,000+-square-foot BLVD & MAIN will combine craft beer and elevated pub cuisine with a lively scene, complete with comfortable seating to settle in and catch any game or sporting event. Next door, the 3,000+-square-foot View Lounge will offer craft cocktails and small bites, introducing a stylish new hotel bar offering at The STRAT. BLVD & MAIN and View Lounge will offer flat screen televisions and convenient access to the William Hill Sports Book for betting.

BLVD & MAIN Executive Chef Johannes Bernau has developed a menu of progressive grill fare, including poutine, fries topped with Wisconsin cheese, chicken gravy and chives; buffalo fried oysters topped with bleu cheese crumbles; Brussels sprouts Caesar salad, tossed with apples, pine nuts, torn croutons and fresh herbs; a BBQ short rib sandwich with dill pickles and chipotle BBQ sauce; stone-fired flatbreads, including the ‘carnivore,’ topped with pepperoni, ground beef, corned bison, bacon, mozzarella and TBG sauce; and brick pressed organic chicken, beer brined and served with crushed fried potatoes, brocollini and natural jus. The dessert menu includes apple pie flautas, s’more cake, toffee cake and fondue for sharing.

BLVD & MAIN brewer, Dave Otto, has developed a signature beer to roll out for BLVD & MAIN’s opening: Jaywalker, a mild golden ale (5.2% alcohol by volume) with a touch of malt sweetness, low bitterness and a hint of “old world” hop aroma. Two of Otto’s other beers: Sean Patrick’s Irish Red and Hualapai IPA of Golden Entertainment’s PT’s taverns, will be among the two dozen beers on tap. Other local and regional craft beers include: CraftHaus Evocation Saison, Tenaya Creek Bonanza brown ale and Banger Brewing Morning Joe from Las Vegas; Pizza Port Swami’s IPA and Belching Beaver Mexican chocolate PB stout from San Diego; Odell’s 90 Schilling ale from Fort Collins, Colo.; and Golden Road Mango Court from Los Angeles.

The cocktails at BLVD & MAIN and View Lounge were created by Golden Entertainment’s Corporate Director of Beverage Jason Shullo. Shullo, who has led the beverage programs for some of America’s hottest restaurants and bars, developed a cocktail menu for BLVD & MAIN inspired by the tap house experience. Signature cocktails include the Especial Spritz, made with Absolut grapefruit vodka, strawberry puree and Aperol topped with Modelo Especial; and What She Said, made with Crown Royal vanilla, raspberries, lime sour, Pernod and Goslings ginger beer.

The cocktails at View Lounge include the Innocent Mistake, made with Sauza Hornitos, fresh lime sour, La Pinta pomegranate tequila and cantaloupe juice; the Quick Whit, made with freshly cut pineapple, ripe cold pressed watermelon juice, Sauza Hornitos Plata, lemon sour, wheat beer and two slices of jalapeno. Complementing the cocktails is a menu of bites, including smoked salmon flatbread made with crème fraiche, tobiko, chive and chili-garlic oil and chilled Maine crab rolls made with crisp pear, celery and lemon served in homemade herb focaccia.

20 Years After “Casino,” Ex-mobster Frank Cullotta Guides Vegas Tours

mob museumcasino tour

NEW 2016 DATES ANNOUNCED FOR “CASINO” TOURS OF LAS VEGAS

Hosted by Former Mobster Frank Cullotta, Tour Visits The Mob Museum, Locations of
Key Movie Scenes

New dates for 2016 have just been announced for Frank Cullotta’s “Casino” Tour of Las Vegas: January 20, February 24, March 23, April 20, May 18, June 22, July 20, August 24, September 21, October 19, November 23 and December 14.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the blockbuster movie “Casino,” which provided a fast-paced dramatization of an era in Las Vegas when organized crime controlled many of the city’s casinos. History buffs and film aficionados alike can join former mobster Frank Cullotta himself for a two-hour tour of the places where iconic scenes from “Casino” actually took place.

The tours begin at The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, with a special private tour by Mob historian Robert George Allen. Following the visit to the Museum, guests depart on a bus tour that takes them to locations immortalized in history and in film, such as The Casino House, the site of the Frankie “Blue” death scene, Bertha’s robbery site and more. In addition, participants learn the true stories behind the events that transpired in the film.

Cullotta is the former enforcer of Las Vegas’ “Hole in the Wall Gang,” as well as a Chicago Outfit enforcer. The Hole in the Wall Gang was a burglary ring so named because of its practice of smashing holes through exterior walls and ceilings during its heists.

Eventually, Cullotta left his organized crime life behind, serving as a technical consultant on the set of “Casino” and appearing in several scenes as a hit man. Information about Cullotta appears in exhibits inside The Mob Museum, including in a video clip in which “Casino” writer Nicholas Pileggi describes Cullotta’s unique, firsthand knowledge of a murder scene depicted in the film.

According to Pileggi: “There would have been no ‘Casino’ movie—and probably not a good ‘Casino’ book—without Frank Cullotta.”

The remaining “Casino” tours in 2015 are scheduled to take place November 11 and December 9. To make reservations, call (702) 677-9015 or visit www.FrankCullottasCasinoTour.com.

The Mob Museum Commemorates 20th Anniversary of “Casino” Nov. 7

THE MOB MUSEUM PRESENTS THE REAL STORY BEHIND “CASINO,” A COURTROOM CONVERSATION, SATURDAY, NOV. 7, 7 P.M.

Panel Discussion Coincides with 20th Anniversary
of Film’s Release

In recognition of the 20th anniversary of the release of Martin Scorsese’s award-winning film, “Casino,” The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, presents its next Courtroom Conversation: “The Real Story behind ‘Casino.’” The panel discussion among individuals with firsthand knowledge of the true events on which the movie was based will take place inside the Museum’s historic courtroom on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

Organized crime’s control of the casino industry was waning during the 1970s, but the Chicago Outfit kept its grip on the Stardust, Fremont, Marina and Hacienda hotels. Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, a highly regarded sports betting expert, was the Outfit’s man in charge of the skim. Tony Spilotro was sent to the desert to protect Rosenthal as he skimmed millions of dollars of casino profits that were distributed to several Midwestern organized crime groups.

Spilotro caused more problems than he prevented. He demanded a “street tax” from the town’s criminals and set up a burglary ring that smashed holes in the walls and roofs of high-end homes, jewelry stores and other businesses and attracted intense scrutiny from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. In 1979, Spilotro ended up in Nevada’s Black Book, which prevented him from setting foot in a casino. In 1986, his body and that of his brother Michael were found buried in an Indiana cornfield.

Rosenthal, too, was a law enforcement target. He was denied a state gaming license because of his underworld ties, but he secretly operated the Stardust while holding a mid-level title. Rosenthal left Las Vegas soon after surviving a car bombing in October 1982. He was placed in Nevada’s Black Book in 1987 and died in Florida in 2008.

In “Casino,” the Ace Rothstein character, played by Robert De Niro, is based on Rosenthal, while the Nicky Santoro character, played by Joe Pesci, is based on Spilotro.

Panelists include:

  • Oscar Goodman, attorney for Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and Tony Spilotro
  • Jeff Silver, State Gaming Control Board attorney during Spilotro/Rosenthal era
  • Marc Kaspar, retired FBI agent who pursued Spilotro for a decade
  • Deborah Richard, undercover FBI agent who infiltrated the Spilotro camp
  • Gwen Castaldi, television reporter during the Spilotro/Rosenthal era

Tickets for “The Real Story behind ‘Casino’” are available online here. The cost is $25; Museum Members receive a 10 percent discount. For more information, go to www.TheMobMuseum.org or call (702) 229-2734.

“CASINO” TOURS OF LAS VEGAS LAUNCH TO MARK 20TH YEAR SINCE
MOVIE’S RELEASE

Hosted by Former Mobster Frank Cullotta, Tour Visits The Mob Museum, Locations of
Key Movie Scenes

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the blockbuster movie “Casino,” which provided a fast-paced dramatization of an era in Las Vegas when organized crime controlled many of the city’s casinos. Beginning March 18, history buffs and film aficionados alike can join former mobster Frank Cullotta himself for a two-hour tour of the places where iconic scenes from “Casino” actually took place.

The tour will begin at The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, with a special private tour by former FBI Special Agent Dennis Arnoldy and Mob historian Robert George Allen. Following the visit to the Museum, guests will depart on a bus tour that will take them to locations immortalized in history and in film, such as The Casino House, the site of the Frankie “Blue” death scene, Bertha’s robbery site and more. In addition, participants will learn the true stories behind the events that transpired in the film.

Cullotta is the former leader of Las Vegas’ “Hole in the Wall Gang,” as well as a Chicago Outfit enforcer.

The tours are scheduled to take place once monthly beginning March 18; future dates include April 22, May 13, June 10, July 15, August 12, September 9, October 21 and November 11. To make reservations, call (702) 677-9015 or visit www.FrankCullottaCasinoTour.com.
