Valued at $5,400 per person, the ZERO-G experience includes breakfast, flight training, 15 periods of weightlessness, a ZERO-G flight suit, ZERO-G merchandise, a Regravitation Lunch Celebration, certificate of weightless completion and photos and video to remember this thrilling experience.

Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada Joins New Sickle Cell Disease Collaborative

Partnership Brings Better and Consistent Care To Those With Sickle Cell Disease

The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada will join other well-known regional treatment centers in the Western United States to improve available services, as well as the long-term health, of those affected by sickle cell disease (SCD), the most common inherited blood disorder in the United States.

The Pacific Sickle Cell Regional Collaborative (PSCRC) part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), will specifically address the unique needs of those affected by sickle cell disease.

The vast majority of those with SCD are of African American and Hispanic descent. In many communities, economic disparities often pose barriers to receiving treatment. The sickest of those with SCD are often unable to work and must rely on Medicaid. However, fewer providers are willing to see these complex patients due to low reimbursement rates. Additionally, few physicians working with adult patients are trained to manage SCD and there are dwindling numbers of hematologists working with adult patients.

As such, health related quality of life is often poor for those with SCD and the lifespan is significantly shortened based on the absence of knowledgeable health care providers.

PSCRC outlets, including the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada will provide:

  • Sickle Cell Comprehensive Care Team – knowledgeable health care providers who are up-to-date on the latest treatment methods, best outcome practices and clinical trials. Team members provide consistent medical access to SCD patients improving overall health and life expectancy.
  • Shared measurement and data monitoring – allows best treatment methods to be tracked and ultimately shared to providers in and outside of the collaborative.
  • Family to Family community based organizations – to help access patients/families in need of services.

“It is truly a great honor to be included with this great endeavor,” said Alan Ikeda, M.D., Director of Oncology at the Children’s Specialty Center.  “In addition to the ongoing clinical trials that are evaluating the efficacy of new therapeutic agents at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada, the PSCRC will increase the cooperative interaction with other providers that treat sickle cell disease in order to identify other needs and decrease suffering for patients affected with sickle cell disease.”

“This is the type of collaboration that is much needed in our community and will provide access to a wider range of research for our sickle cell patients,” said Nik Abdul-Rashid, M.D. “To be able to work in close communication with the leading experts in this field is truly exciting.”

The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada will join other sickle cell disease treatment centers including, Providence Hospital, Anchorage, Alaska; University of Arizona Cancer Center, Tucson, Arizona; St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute, Boise, Idaho; Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon; and Seattle Children’s Hospital, Seattle, Washington.

The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and The Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada are programs of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non profit organization founded in 2007.

UNLV MEN’S SOCCER NEWS: Rebels Begin Four-Game Conference Homestand

Rebels look to avenge one-goal losses in rematches with Seattle and San Jose State

The UNLV men’s soccer team is looking for a bounce back this weekend as it hosts WAC West division rivals Seattle and San Jose State on Friday (7 pm) and Sunday (1 pm) at Peter Johann Field. UNLV had started out the league schedule with a 2-0 win over the fourth team in the division (Bakersfield), but then suffered two disappointing one-goal losses on the road to the very same teams they are playing this weekend.
Though they dropped the first meetings to Seattle and San Jose State last week, UNLV is happy to be at home for the rematches, as the Rebels have been very strong on their home field this season, averaging two goals a game at Peter Johann Field. That’s helped them post a 3-2 home record with one loss at the hands of No. 22 Gonzaga, and the second coming in overtime. The Rebels split against these two last year at home, with a 3-0 win over Seattle and a 2-1 loss to SJSU.
Both games will be available on the Mountain West Network, shown on, with the San Jose State game being provided by the student-run UNLV-TV production

UNLV Weekly Release

All About The Rebels
The top returning player for the Rebels this year is junior Las Vegas native Salvador Bernal, the top returning scorer from any team in the conference, and an all-region pick in 2012. Sophomore midfielder Rodrigo Fuentes is currently third in the WAC in points while senior forward Joaquin Rivas is tied for sixth, and Bernal is tied for second in assists with three. In goal is junior Ryan Harding, who is seeing action for the first time since 2011 after undergoing successful chemotherapy treatments, and he currently leads the league in GAA at 1.28.

Scouting Seattle
The Redhawks are currently first in the West division by one points thanks to a two-game unbeaten streak, after its 2-1 overtime win over a shorthanded UNLV squad and a 2-2 tie with Bakersfield, also in overtime. Friday will be the Redhawks’ ninth road game of the year, they are 1-6-1 in the first eight games away from Seattle.
Leading the team this year is Miguel Gonzalez with nine goals for 19 points. Hamza Haddadi is next on the team with seven points. In goal for the Redhawks is Jake Fenner, who is holding a 1.65 GAA this season with 91 saves.

Scouting San Jose State
The Spartans are coming into the weekend off its first win of the year. However, the team has only played three road games all season, and this will be the first one since Sept. 22. After going four games without scoring a goal, they put together four total against Bakersfield and UNLV, but have been held to just two goals total away from Spartan Stadium.
Rory Knibbs is the team’s top scorer with three goals and seven points. Four more players have one goal each. In the net is Emman Espinosa with a 1.34 GAA and two shutouts.

Next Time Out
The Rebels closes out their home schedule with a two-game weekend, beginning with a Friday, Oct. 25 contest against Kansas City at 7 pm. That’s followed by Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 27 at 1 pm against Houston Baptist.

UNLV MEN’S SOCCER NEWS: Shorthanded Rebels Suffer 2-1 Double-Overtime Heartbreaker At Seattle

Rebels fall on golden goal in final minutes of the second overtime

A shorthanded UNLV squad was just 76 seconds away from escaping with a road tie, until Seattle scored a golden goal in the 109th minute to claim a 2-1 victory over the Rebels in WAC men’s soccer action on Friday night at Championship Field. The Rebels dropped to 3-7, 1-1 in league play with the loss, while Seattle improved to 3-8-1, 2-0 in the conference.

“I’m very proud of the way out guys battled tonight, having to play down a man from the 26th minute until the end,” said UNLV head coach Rich Ryerson. “You would never had known we were the team down a player unless you counted, the way we played tonight. Fortunately we get to play them again next Friday at home.”

The Rebels had to play a man down for the majority of the night after Bradley Kamdem was given a red card in the 26th minute. Despite playing shorthanded, the Rebels still managed to come up with the first score of the night, when junior Salvador Bernal posted his second goal of the season in the 51st minute. Bernal scored off an assist from Julian Portugal on a cross from the right side, that Bernal then shot down the middle of the goal for the score.

Seattle finished the night with a 20-12 edge on shots, though it was only a 13-11 margin in regulation. Shots on goal were even at nine apiece. Ryan Harding posted seven saves in goal for the Rebels, while Redhawk goalkeeper Jake Feener was credited with eight. Corner kicks were in favor of UNLV by a 3-2 margin.

The Rebels stay on the road for their next contest, at division rival San Jose State on Sunday with a 2:30 pm start.

Tracks from Rachel’s first album and single, “Curtain Fall,” can now be heard on radio stations in Canada and the Philippines. Her second album, “Letters to You,” takes you on a a 10-track musical journey from the pop anthem production of “Center Stage” to the island-flavored “Beach Bum Living.” Wong transforms her acoustic signature sound with fuller instrumentation, including strings, bongos, keys and handclaps. Career Breaks … the new vacation?

Career Breaks … the new vacation?

Oct. 18 marks nationwide event designed to educate workforce on how to realize travel dreams

Ever dreamed of taking six months off to go to another country? Or to travel and see the world beyond Nevada? On Tuesday, Oct. 18, Meet, Plan, Go! (MPG) is hosting a local event in Las Vegas to teach the community the ins and outs of making a career-break a reality.

The event, which takes place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at 3085 East Russell Road, features four panelists – two career breakers, a life coach and a financial advisor. The discussion will focus on everything from first-hand experiences to the intricacies of planning a career break, to determining if a career break is right for the individual. The goal? To let people know they can take a career break.

“Because we live in a society that doesn’t find value in taking time off, we wanted to create a community for people who do want to break out of the norm and travel for an extended period of time,” said MPG co-founder Sherry Ott.

Panelists for the event are:

– Abby Tegnelia, editor of Vegas Magazine/travel blogger, former ex-pat (expatriate)

– Diana Edelman, public relations professional/travel blogger, former long-term traveler

– Judy Irving, life coach

– Becky Buckley, certified financial planner

“When assembling the panel I wanted to make sure attendees could come away from the evening with a firm idea of what to expect from a career break, along with the tools necessary to do something of this magnitude,” said JoAnna Haugen, MPG’s localhost. “This event is designed to offer participants the opportunity to meet inspirational speakers and like-minded travelers; get motivation, contacts and resources necessary to plan the trip of a lifetime; and to start taking concrete steps forward to go on an adventure.”

In addition to offering tools and resources for planning a career break, they will also address the main concerns that prevent people from taking a career break, usually centered around financial, career-related, societal, and safety concerns.

Today, career breaks are becoming more and more of an option for workers. Last year, more than 2,400 people registered for the inaugural MPG event – 23 percent of which were in a trip planning stage pre-event. In a post-event survey, that number rose to 41 percent. “We want career breaks to be more acceptable in America,” says co-founder Michaela Potter. “In fact, we would love to see a career break on every resume. And with the support of our 17 inspiring hosts, their panelists, and our sponsors, including Intrepid Travel, we are making great inroads to achieving that goal.”

In addition to the Las Vegas event, this year’s MPG locations include: Austin, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York City, Orlando, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis, Washington DC and Toronto.
Registration for the nationwide event is currently open. For more information, or to register:
