The donation will also allow Cure 4 The Kids Foundation to move into a state-of-the-art building, increasing the number of exam rooms and improving the patient treatment experience. In addition to support of the expansion, Cure 4 The Kids worked with Stefani to design and name a patient room after her within the existing clinic space, which was unveiled in March 2019.

A three-time GRAMMY®Award winner, Gwen Stefani has achieved global success as a performer, songwriter, frontwoman for iconic rock band No Doubt, and multi-platinum solo artist. Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the critically praised album includes her powerful No. 1 single “Used To Love You.”

In addition to her three GRAMMY® Awards, Stefani’s honors include four MTV Video Music Awards, two Billboard Awards, an American Music Award, and a Brit Award. In 2014, she channeled her tremendous musical passion into empowering young singers as their coach on the seventh season of NBC’s musical competition series “The Voice.” Stefani now returns for her fourth season as a coach on “The Voice,” with the 17th season of the four-time Emmy Award-winning show arriving in September 2019.

Get a Haircut and Help a Child Get Medical Treatment at Cuts-4-The-Kids on Sunday, September 15, 2019

This is the 10th year Mosaic Salon at Boca Park has participated in Cuts-4-The-Kids

The public – and first responders – are invited to get a haircut on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at Mosaic Salon at Boca Park. This simple act will raise funds for Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Charity Care Program which ensures patients without medical insurance or who are unable to pay for services still receive treatment.

For the 10th year, Mosaic Salon is hosting Cuts-4-The-Kids with all stylists donating their time so that all proceeds from haircuts and other salon services go to Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

“We do not turn patients away from treatment for financial reasons,” said Annette Logan-Parker, president & CEO, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. “One of the ways we keep that promise is by having fundraisers – such as Cuts-4-The-Kids – that help us fund our Charity Care Program which has helped hundreds of families in our community.”

Appointments are being accepted for Sunday, September 15, 2019, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling 702-373-2108 or by going online to http://bit.ly/Cuts4TheKids2019 and booking your own appointment.

This year, Cuts-4-The-Kids is encouraging first responders to join in the effort and get their haircut. All law enforcement, firefighters, ambulance companies and others are strongly encouraged to make an appointment.

Services being offered at Cuts-4-The-Kids include:

• Women’s haircut $45 (includes blow-dry)
• Men’s haircut $25
• Children’s haircut $20
• Eyebrow Waxing $15
• Manicure $25
• Pedicure $45
• 15-minute chair massage $15

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Mad Hatter Tea Party Raises More Than $23K To Help Childhood Cancer Survivors

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Mad Hatter Tea Party Raises More Than $23K To Help Childhood Cancer Survivors

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s 4th Annual Mad Hatter Tea Party raised more than $23,000 to benefit the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) Clinic for childhood cancer survivors.

The LTFU is Nevada’s only outpatient clinic focused entirely on providing health monitoring and patient-specific education that will help childhood cancer survivors live their healthiest lives. This type of clinic is essential to childhood cancer survivors since some treatments used to cure children of cancer can cause secondary health issues, often called “late-effects.” The LTFU educates patients on their specific risks, which are based on their cancer treatment, their age at diagnosis, their gender, and other risk factors.

Funds raised at the Mad Hatter Tea Party help underwrite the cost of the LTFU and the many critical medical services provided to patients. Like all Cure 4 The Kids Foundation programs, patients are accepted with or without medical insurance, and regardless of their ability to pay— no patient is denied treatment for financial reasons. In addition, all childhood cancer survivors are eligible for LTFU clinic services irrespective of where they received their cancer treatment.

“This was by far our largest and most successful Tea Party event to date,” said Annette Logan-Parker, President & CEO, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. “While we put a lot of effort into creating a fun and informative event, we also want the public to understand that what we provide through the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic is vital to the long-term health of childhood cancer survivors.”

The outdoor event was held in the courtyard of The Mercer Las Vegas, a resort lifestyle community developed by StoryBook Homes, the namesake of the long-term follow-up clinic. The owners of StoryBook Homes, Wayne & Catherine Laska, fully understand the complications that can arise after cancer treatment. Their son, Collin survived a stage 4 cancer diagnosis, but years after remission, he continues to be affected by the chemotherapy and radiation that saved his life. As a result of the Laska’s journey, and their desire to make resources available to all families, the Laska’s donated $500,000 to the long-term follow-up clinic in 2017 and have continued to support its operations.

The tea party’s featured speaker was Kirstie Ennis, a former marine, an amputee, mountain climber, Hollywood stuntwoman, veteran’s advocate and inspirational speaker. Ennis spoke to attendees of her determination to create a fulfilling life despite the hardships she has endured — a message particularly suited to childhood cancer survivors who can be faced with amputations or other major health complications.

Kirstie Ennis (center) was this year’s featured speaker at the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation Mad Hatter Tea Party. Ennis is a former marine who was shot down in Afghanistan in 2012, an amputee, Hollywood stuntwoman, and an avid mountain climber. She recently returned from an attempt to be the first woman with a leg amputated above the knee to climb Mt. Everest. After making it past 28,000 feet, her team feared they would not have enough oxygen to scale the summit and survive. She plans to attempt Mt. Everest again next year. She spoke to childhood cancer survivors about facing challenges and hardships in their lives, and despite those challenges, finding the ability to overcome obstacles.

Criss Angel Debuts Themed Patient Exam Room at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation

Criss Angel Debuts Themed Patient Exam Room at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation

World-renowned illusionist and the biggest name in magic, Criss Angel is the latest Las Vegas headliner to sponsor a themed patient exam room at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

Angel, Shaunyl Benson and their five-year-old son Johnny Crisstopher, who endured his own three-year battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, revealed the themed patient exam room together on Thursday, May 9, 2019.

“Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is an organization close to my heart and as an ally to those affected by pediatric cancer, I am grateful for any opportunity I have to get involved,” said Angel. “Having a calm and colorful patient exam room is so important throughout a child’s treatment plan so I’m honored to be able to sponsor this latest addition to the clinic.”

The kid-friendly themes and colorful artwork used to cover the walls of the exam room are loosely based on elements incorporated into Criss Angel MINDFREAK at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. In honor of those affected by pediatric cancer, Angel’s immersive theater includes handprints provided by Cure 4 The Kids Foundation patients.

This will be Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s second themed patient exam room in the clinic. Las Vegas artist Juan Muniz will again create the one-of-a-kind illustrations that will help entertain and inspire young patients who are often required to have weekly or monthly doctor visits as part of their treatment.  Muniz’s illustrations include a caricature of Criss Angel, tree, and handprints representing those being treated at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

“Criss Angel has been a strong and consistent supporter of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation,” said Annette Logan-Parker, president and CEO of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. “Even before his own son was diagnosed with cancer, Criss was an advocate for the needs of childhood cancer patients in Southern Nevada. His support has helped our organization provide treatment to the most vulnerable in our community.”

A long-time supporter of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, Angel has attended Circus Couture, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s largest fundraiser, and has donated six figure contributions during the live auction to garner further awareness and provide additional support.

In front of Angel is his 5-year-old son, Johnny Crisstopher, who endured his own three-year battle with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and who is now cancer free. Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is Nevada’s only childhood cancer outpatient treatment center. Patients are accepted with good insurance, bad insurance or no insurance. No child is turned away from treatment for financial reasons. cure4thekids.org  Photo by Tonya Harvey.

All illustrations and artwork in the Criss Angel-themed exam room must be incorporated around the necessary medical equipment in the room and special considerations are also made, including the use of microbial resistant glossy paint that allows the room to be cleaned and sterilized.

Gwen Stefani Debuts New Patient Exam Room at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation

Gwen Stefani Debuts New Patient Exam Room at Cure 4 The Kids Foundation

During a special recognition and ribbon cutting event, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and multi-Platinum recording artist and global icon Gwen Stefani revealed the first-ever themed exam room for patients of Nevada’s only childhood cancer outpatient treatment center.

Stefani worked with Cure 4 The Kids Foundation to inspire the design of a themed exam room that allows patients to receive medical check-ups in a brightly colored, inspirational and joyous atmosphere. Las Vegas artist Juan Muniz completed the illustrations which cover the exam room walls and incorporate a likeness of Stefani, and images of sunflowers, one of her favorite flowers; bananas, a reference to her hit single ‘Hollaback Girl;’ and oranges, an homage to her hometown Anaheim, located in Orange County, Calif. Special considerations were made in the materials used to transform the room; medically necessary to protect patients, including special microbial resistant glossy paint and bacteria resistant furniture.

“Working with Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is, sincerely, one of the greatest opportunities to arise from my time in Las Vegas,” said Stefani. “I am so humbled to have the opportunity to work with Cure 4 The Kids to support the children who are treated here and, in a small way, bring a bit of joy to what I know is a difficult journey.”

As part of her Las Vegas residency, Stefani, Live Nation Las Vegas and Caesars Entertainment are
donating $1 of every ticket purchased to “Gwen Stefani – Just A Girl” at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino to Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, which is Nevada’s only nonprofit childhood cancer treatment center. So far, ticket sales have netted more than a $50,000 donation that will be used to help Cure 4 The Kids Foundation expand into a new wing at its location at One Breakthrough Way. The additional space will increase the number of examination rooms and allow for greater research capabilities.

“Gwen’s support of our clinic has been tremendous and has helped us bring greater awareness of the excellent treatment we provide, as well as the fact that no child is ever turned away from treatment for financial reasons,” said Annette Logan-Parker, president and CEO of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

Mondays Dark Turns Five! Dec. 17 Party Celebrates 2018 Charities, Announces 2019 Charities — MD will raise $1 Million in 2019 for Nonprofits

Mondays Dark Turns Five!
December 17
Party celebrates 2018 beneficiaries, announces 2019 charities
Mondays Dark to hit $1 million raised for charity next year

It’s time for cheers, charity and fun for the fifth anniversary celebration of Mondays Dark, the twice-monthly celebrity-driven variety show benefitting local nonprofit organizations. With 42 charities under one roof, the anniversary party has become one of the largest philanthropic events of the year. It happens Monday, Dec. 17 at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Guests will enjoy a stellar night with some of Las Vegas’ top entertainers who will be announced in the coming weeks. Festivities also will include a live and silent auction with art, show and concert tickets, dining packages, spa treatments, jewelry and other great prizes, and the reveal of the 21 Mondays Dark beneficiaries for 2019.

“I can’t believe Mondays Dark is five years old. I love our year-end celebration which brings all of our partners together as well as our new ones for next year ‒ 42 local groups celebrating each other under one roof.  It’s a cool party,” said Mark Shunock, entertainer and philanthropist who founded Mondays Dark. “In 2019, we’ll hit the $1 million mark in funds raised, and this is something our team is extremely proud of.”

The Mondays Dark 2018 lineup included: WHY Ranch/White Horse Youth Ranch Foundation, St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Miracle Flights, Baby’s Bounty, Tyler Robinson Foundation, HELP of Southern Nevada, New Vista, Positively Arts Foundation, Speedway Children’s Charities, Forgotten Not Gone, Cure 4 the Kids Foundation, Sin City Sisters of the Perpetual Indulgence, Leaders in Training, Down Syndrome Organization of Southern Nevada,  Alzheimer’s Association Desert Southwest Chapter, Officer Down, Adam’s Place, Yellow Pants Project, Children’s Heart Foundation, and Las Vegas Firefighter Youth Hockey.

There are also seven VIP Box Suites available at $1,500 for 12 people including food and cocktails. The Hard Rock is located at 4455 Paradise Rd. Tickets are available at www.MondaysDark.com.

Shunock developed the idea to give back to the community and support local charities with Mondays Dark in 2013 when he was starring in the hit Broadway musical, “Rock of Ages.” He enlisted some of his entertainment friends to help, and Mondays Dark was born. The popularity and reach of the fundraisers has continued to grow with charities and performers eager to be involved. By year’s end, 80 nonprofits will have been helped.

Mondays Dark was named “Best of the City” from Vegas Seven in 2014 and “Best of Vegas” from Las Vegas Weekly the following year. In addition, Shunock received the 2014 Angel Award for Cultural Advocate/Entertainer of the Year and was named Best Philanthropist from “Best of Las Vegas” and the Las Vegas Review Journal and the Impact Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals Las Vegas Chapter for Mondays Dark.

About Mondays Dark and The Space
Mondays Dark was founded in November 2013 by entertainer and philanthropist Mark Shunock, who currently can be seen as the emcee for “Magic Mike Live” and the in-arena host for the Vegas Golden Knights. He wanted to provide the community with a sizzling mix of entertainment, music and comedy while supporting the many charities in Southern Nevada. To date, the 501(c)3 organization has raised more than $800,000 for local nonprofits, one event at a time, one ticket at a time. With the opening of The Space arts complex in 2016 by Shunock, Mondays Dark found a permanent home and opened the door to a wide variety of additional community outreach to Las Vegas – from local productions to children’s workshops, from targeted fundraisers to Mondays Dark events, and from fashion shows to weddings. Madame Tussauds Las Vegas Teamed up with Cure 4 the Kids Foundation to Help Fight Childhood Cancer with Signed Gwen Stefani Guitar

Madame Tussauds Las Vegas Teamed up with Cure 4 the Kids Foundation to Help Fight Childhood Cancer with Signed Gwen Stefani Guitar

What a wonderful life! Madame Tussauds Las Vegas teamed up with Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, a local Las Vegas nonprofit, to help fight childhood cancer. In honor of the famed Gwen Stefani’s new residency in Vegas and her recently announced partnership with the reputable organization, the renowned attraction was pleased to support the efforts to raise funds for the foundation with the donation of a one-of-a-kind Fender Squier Electric Guitar signed by Gwen herself in 2010.

After several bids, the signed guitar went to a loyal Gwen Stefani fan for $1,500. Now that’s B-A-N-A-N-A-S! Madame Tussauds is proud to see every cent of the winning bid go back to Cure 4 the Kids.

Additionally, on August 4 Madame Tussauds was thrilled to partake in the Cure 4 the Kids annual event where children and their families were given the opportunity to act like a celebrity for a day and pose with the Gwen Stefani figure on the red carpet. Patients along with their family and friends were star struck to see Gwen and pose with her figure while strutting their stuff on the red carpet.

In September 2010, Madame Tussauds launched Gwen Stefani’s iconic display, and during the unveiling she so thoughtfully signed the guitar as a thank you to Madame Tussauds. Guests can still visit the attraction and join the spotlight by striking a pose with Gwen.

Naqvi Injury Law Pledges Multi-Year Support of Cure 4 the Kids Foundation

Naqvi Injury Law Pledges Multi-Year Support of Cure 4 the Kids Foundation

Cure 4 the Kids Foundation is proud to announce that Las Vegas-based Naqvi Injury Law has begun a multi-year pledge commitment to help further the mission of the nonprofit organization, and its pediatric outpatient treatment center.

As the only outpatient facility in the State of Nevada focused on the diagnosis, treatment and long-term health of children affected by cancer, the multi-year donations are vitally important to Cure 4 the Kids Foundation and its efforts to meet the healthcare needs of patients — including those with insurance and without.

In recognition of the financial support, an examination room will be named in honor of the Naqvi family at Cure 4 the Kids Foundation’s new facility on the third floor of One Breakthrough Way in Las Vegas, near Town Center and the 215 Freeway. Later this year, Cure 4 the Kids Foundation will move all clinic and administrative operations into the new facility on the Summerlin campus of Roseman University of Health Sciences.

Farhan Naqvi founded Naqvi Injury Law in Las Vegas in 2008. The personal injury law firm made the financial commitment to Cure 4 the Kids Foundation knowing how difficult catastrophic medical conditions are on young patients, as well as their families.

“Nearly every one of our employees is a parent so we fully understand the toll a devastating diagnosis such as cancer will take on the entire family,” said Farhan Naqvi. “Providing financial support to Cure 4 the Kids Foundation is an especially meaningful way for our company to support local families at a very difficult time in their lives.”

The donations will be used to address critical needs within the organization and clinic, including support of the Charity Care Program. It ensures that patients without medical insurance or those unable to pay for services still receive treatment. To date, more than 500 families have relied on the Charity Care Program to get the life-saving treatment their child needs.

“Thanks to the support of our mission by generous sponsors, including Naqvi Injury Law and especially Farhan and Ellie Naqvi, we will never turn a child away from treatment for financial reasons,” said Annette Logan-Parker, president and CEO of Cure 4 the Kids Foundation. “As Nevada’s only nonprofit childhood cancer outpatient treatment center, it is vitally important we make that commitment to the community.”

Since its founding in 2007, nearly 40,000 patients have been treated by medical staff at Cure 4 the Kids Foundation.  The majority of those cases were for treatment of childhood cancer.

Las Vegas-based Naqvi Injury Law has begun a multi-year pledge commitment in support of the mission of Cure 4 the Kids Foundation and its pediatric outpatient treatment center.  The clinic is Nevada’s only outpatient center focused on the treatment of children diagnosed with cancer and other catastrophic conditions. The Mercer Grand Opening Raises $21K for Childhood Cancer Survivor Clinic

The Mercer Las Vegas Grand Opening Raises $21K for

StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic

The Mercer Las Vegas, which has redefined resort lifestyle apartment living in Southern Nevada, is also having an impact on the lives of childhood cancer survivors thanks to the generosity of attendees at The Mercer’s recent grand opening earlier this month.

More than $21,000 was raised through ticket sales and additional donations from attendees.  The funds will directly benefit the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic for childhood cancer survivors. Operated by Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, the clinic is the only one of its kind in the State of Nevada focused entirely on the medical, social and emotional needs of childhood cancer survivors.

The Mercer Las Vegas is a 175-unit resort lifestyle community located at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive, offering one and two bedroom apartments, as well as townhouse and penthouse units. All apartment homes come with a number of upgraded features and a long list of amenities.

The Mercer was developed by the principals of StoryBook Homes, Wayne and Catherine Laska, who wanted the grand opening event to benefit the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic and Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.

The Laska family is well aware of the needs of childhood cancer survivors, as their son Collin was diagnosed as a young child with stage four cancer. Like many childhood cancer survivors, the treatments that saved Collin’s life now pose “late-effects” that can create medical, social or emotional issues as Collin enters early adulthood.

“When our son needed long-term follow-up services, they weren’t available locally. My wife, Catherine, had to seek out experts around the country to get help,” said Wayne Laska, Principal, Storybook Homes. “Knowing the strain this puts on families, Catherine and I vowed we would support the long-term follow-up clinic in Las Vegas now that it exists. We’re proud of the fact that all childhood cancer survivors have access to the clinic, including those without medical insurance and those unable to pay for treatment.”

The StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic educates patients about their future health risks based on the specific treatment they had. Patients will undergo annual exams and are also presented with a binder of information about the specific “late-effects” that could occur. These are based on the patient’s age at time of treatment, gender and specific treatment they received. The binder is also intended as a resource for future medical providers who will be aware of a patient’s specific health needs and concerns.

Every long-term follow-up patient is seen by a board-certified pediatric hematology/oncology physician, a pediatric neuropsychologist, a social worker and education specialist.

“As childhood cancer treatments continue to improve and more children — thankfully — survive cancer, there is much more emphasis on how to keep survivors healthy the rest of their lives,” said Annette Logan, President and CEO, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. “The StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic is essential in helping patients become aware of their health risks, and provide them with a roadmap to stay healthy. The generous donations from The Mercer’s grand opening will help us support these efforts.”

Last year, StoryBook Homes donated $500,000 to the long-term follow-up clinic which was renamed the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Clinic in recognition of the generous donation.

Grand Opening of The Mercer – April 5, 2018 – Benefits Childhood Cancer Survivor Clinic

Grand Opening of The Mercer Las Vegas to benefit

StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic

Fundraiser tickets available at: bit.ly/MercerLVOpening

A new chapter in Las Vegas history is about to begin.

The principals of StoryBook Homes, Wayne and Catherine Laska, have announced the grand opening of The Mercer – Las Vegas, the Laska’s first resort-style community in Southwest Las Vegas which is redefining apartment living in Southern Nevada.

The 175-unit community located at the corner of Tropicana Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive, will officially debut to the public during a special open house on April 5, 2018 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. The public is invited to come browse the four-story facility, tour the well-appointed apartment homes, experience the grounds and rooftop deck and also dine on award-winning barbecue. Live music will be provided by Hal Savar Experience. Tickets for the fundraiser are $60 per person or two for $100 and available at http://bit.ly/MercerLVOpening.

“This is truly a unique product that we are introducing to the Las Vegas community,” said Wayne Laska, Principal, StoryBook Homes. “It was a very challenging project to build, but we believe you will love what we created.”

This special grand opening event, open to the general public, will raise funds in support of the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic which addresses the unique medical, social and emotional needs of childhood cancer survivors long after they have been cured.

This is the only clinic in the State of Nevada specifically designed to meet the needs of childhood cancer survivors. The clinic, operated by Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, is important to the Laska family as one of their children, Collin, is a childhood cancer survivor. Although long-term follow-up services were not available locally when Collin needed them, the Laska family wanted to make sure those services are available for survivors now. The Laska family has already pledged $500,000 in support of the StoryBook Homes Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic.

During the grand opening, guests will have the opportunity to meander throughout The Mercer which offers one, and two bedroom apartments as well townhouse and penthouse units with Las Vegas Strip or mountain views. The units offer many upgraded features you would expect to find in private homes, including soft-close cabinets, under-cabinet lighting, quartz countertops and upgraded faucets. All units come with a long list of amenities including daily continental breakfast, community kitchen, gym, yoga room, massage room, theater, mail room and package acceptance center, pool and spa, outdoor barbecues, rooftop deck, secured underground parking and much more.

The Mercer Las Vegas is an important project for the community as well. The Mercer location was once intended for a mid-rise condominium project in the late 2000s during the “Manhattanization” period in Las Vegas. The original project never materialized and the lot sat abandoned for several years. With Wayne Laska’s vision and determination, The Mercer Las Vegas has now added a new vitality to the area near Tropicana Avenue and Grand Canyon Drive, and a new standard of apartment living in the Las Vegas Valley.

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation Names New Chief Medical Officer and

Announces Additional Promotions

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, the parent organization of the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada, has named Alan Ikeda, M.D., as Chief Medical Officer.

In this position, Dr. Ikeda is responsible for all clinical and standards practices within the organization’s two clinics, as well as oversight of staff performance and training, patient care, and adherence to policies that ensure continued accreditation of both clinics by The Joint Commission. Dr. Ikeda joined the Children’s Specialty Center in 2010 as one of the clinic’s Pediatric Hematology-Oncology providers, but has also served as Director of Oncology and Interim Medical Director during his tenure.

“I am very grateful for the opportunity and have tremendous faith in our team’s ability to continue to promote the mission and vision of our organization,” said Alan Ikeda, M.D.

Additional promotions announced by Cure 4 The Kids Foundation include:

Kanyalakshmi Ayyanar, M.D., was named Director of Oncology at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada. In her new position, Dr. Ayyanar is responsible for oversight of all oncology staff and providers, management of all clinical oncology practices, patient care, as well as related clinical trials.

Dr. Ayyanar joined Cure 4 The Kids Foundation in 2015 and is the state’s only full-time physician with training in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology. Prior to moving to Nevada, Dr. Ayyanar was Director of Pediatric Neuro-Oncology at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Although board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, as a Pediatric Neuro-Oncologist, Dr. Ayyanar has special training in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of brain and spinal cord tumors. Brain tumors are the second most common type of cancer for pediatric patients.

Danielle Bello, Ph.D., was named Director of the Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) Clinic for childhood cancer survivors. Dr. Bello, a licensed Psychologist and Neuropsychologist, joined the foundation in 2015. In addition to responsibility for the LTFU Clinic, she leads the Children’s Specialty Center’s Neuropsychology program, which provides understanding of brain-behavior relationships, and also assists patients who are in need of school services and therapies as a result of their medical treatment. Since many childhood cancer survivors can be affected by “late effects” from some therapies, Dr. Bello’s oversight provides additional benefit and expertise for LTFU patients.

Waseem Alhushki, M.D. is now lead physician at the LTFU Clinic. Dr. Alhushki joined the foundation in 2013 as a Pediatric Hematology-Oncology provider, receiving his board certification in 2014. As lead physician, Dr. Alhushki will coordinate all medical care for childhood cancer survivors and evaluate each LTFU patient. Prior to joining the foundation, Dr. Alhushki was part of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. While at CHLA, he completed his fellowship research which focused on the role of weight loss in improving outcome for obese children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Arlene Bayreder, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP), is now coordinator of all aspects in our growing electronic health records program. This includes implementation of our platform allowing for electronic ordering of medications, and eventually, chemotherapy orders, which will add another layer of patient safety and efficiency.

In September of 2016, Nik Abdul Rashid, M.D. was named Director of the Sickle Cell Treatment Center of Nevada. Although sickle cell disease patients have been treated at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada since it opened, the Sickle Cell Treatment Center brings a much more comprehensive approach to patient care than was previously offered.

Under Dr. Rashid’s directorship, all sickle cell patients will undergo an annual comprehensive clinic where each patient is seen by a multi-disciplinary team, including Pediatric Hematologist, Pediatric Neuropsychologist, palliative care specialist, social worker, patient advocate and educator, clinical research associate, physical therapist and registered nurse.

Since 2007, a combined 40,000 patients have been treated at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada. As part of the mission of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, no patient is ever turned away from treatment for financial reasons. Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Golf 4 The Kids Raises A Whopping $85,000 for Two Local Nonprofits

Golf 4 The Kids Raises A Whopping $85,000 for Two Local Nonprofits

Annual Tournament Has Raised Almost $300,000 for Nevada Children

A lot of golfers swung into action at the 5th annual Golf 4 The Kids Tournament, raising almost $85,000, which will be split equally between two Nevada nonprofit organizations: Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation.

This event, which started in 2013, was held at the Red Rock Country Club on Monday, May 1, 2017, where golfers played the club’s private Mountain Course.

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation will use the proceeds raised in the tournament to fund the Charity Care Program, which helps ensure patients who don’t have medical insurance or the ability to pay for treatment, receive the medical attention they need.

“This is an important fundraiser for us as it helps us to provide the unduplicated services that are at the very core of our mission,” said Annette Logan, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation CEO and co-founder. “We are so thankful for the sponsors and the participants in the tournament who each help towards ensuring our goal that patients who are unable to pay for treatment get the medical attention that they need.”

The Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation will use the funds to send children to Camp Independent Firefly, which is a medically supervised summer camp, where youth can test their limits, gain new skills for living independently with their disorder, and meet others similarly affected with bleeding disorders.

At the tournament’s award ceremony, organizers encouraged participants to make individual pledges to send additional children to Camp Independent Firefly. Golfers donated hundreds of dollars. In fact, during one heart-stopping moment, one attendee, Stephen Chiang, made a donation of more than $20,000!

“That was an absolutely amazing moment that I will remember for the rest of my life,” said Kelli Walters, Executive Director of the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation. “If it weren’t for the amazing and generous residents in our community, we would not be able to send such a large number of our youth to Camp Independent Firefly at no cost to them.”

CSL Behring was the Presenting Sponsor at this year’s event.

Professional PGA golfer Perry Parker hosted and participated in the Golf 4 The Kids Tournament held May 1, 2017 at the Red Rock Country Club. The annual event raised $85,000 which will be split equally between two nonprofit organizations: Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation. Parker, who was diagnosed with hemophilia as a child, spoke during the awards ceremony and strongly encourages those with bleeding disorders to remain active throughout their lives.

During the Golf 4 The Kids awards ceremony, Stephen Chiang, donated $20,000 to send dozens of children to Camp Independent Firefly, a special medically supervised summer camp available to attendees at no cost. The camp allows a child with a bleeding disorder, and their siblings, to safely enjoy the outdoors while also learning to increase independence as it relates to their disorder. Pigs for the Kids Third-Annual BBQ Competition Set for Sept. 23

THIRD ANNUAL PIGS FOR THE KIDS TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, SEPT. 23

Barbecue Team Registration Now Open

Tickets On Sale Now $10 In Advance, $15 At The Door

The date has been set and team registration is now open for the third-annual Pigs for the Kids barbecue contest and charity fundraiser, which takes place at Craig Ranch Regional Park on Saturday, Sept. 23, from noon to 9 p.m. Featuring a spirited barbecue competition, a “Piggy Pen” kids’ play area, live bands, ice cold beer, wine, and more—the family-friendly event tastes good and does good by supporting childhood cancer charities. This year’s Pigs for the Kids Barbecue Cook-Off and Festival will benefit Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Like no other barbecue competition in Las Vegas, Pigs for the Kids will offer everyone—from backyard grill masters to professional chefs and restaurateurs—a chance to show their barbecue brilliance in a variety of categories. Teams will compete to take home the third-annual Pigs for the Kids Barbecue Cook-Off Grand Champion Trophy; trophies will be offered in five categories: ribs, pork shoulder, sauce, beans and “Hog Wild”—where anything goes, as long as it includes pork. Pigs for the Kids expects 50 barbecue teams to compete, which will be judged by a panel of both certified as well as celebrity judges.

Inspired by founder Todd Radwanski’s daughter, Adilyn, who was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer at 8 months old, Pigs for the Kids was envisioned as a fun-filled community event to support organizations such as those that helped the Radwanski family during Adilyn’s illness. Now a vivacious, athletic 13-year-old girl, Adilyn served as ambassador for the Candlelighters’ 5K, is academically driven and continues to serve as inspiration for everyone around her. It was Adilyn who suggested “Pigs for the Kids” as the name for this event and is delighted to be part of something helping other kids affected by cancer.

The registration fee for team competition is $175 for a 10-foot-by-10-foot booth; $350 for a 20-foot-by-20-foot booth; and $600 for a 40-foot-by-40-foot booth. General admission and V.I.Pig passes will go on sale soon. Sponsorships are also available at a variety of levels. Tickets are on sale now for $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tournament Benefits Cure 4 The Kids Foundation & Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation

The 5th annual Golf 4 the Kids tournament will take place Monday, May 1, 2017, at Red Rock Country Club’s Private Mountain Course.

Proceeds will be split evenly between the two 501(c)(3) organizations.

Last year’s event raised $60,000. Since inception, more than $200,000 has been raised.

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation provides diverse medical services through its two main clinics —The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and the Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada. The Children’s Specialty Center provides treatment to those affected by cancer, rare and ultra-rare diseases, genetic and rheumatic conditions. In addition, the clinic provides sub-specialty care including the Pediatric Palliative Outpatient Clinic and the Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic for childhood cancer survivors. The Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) of Nevada is the only federally recognized HTC in the state and provides diagnosis and treatment for inherited bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease through its clinics in Las Vegas and Reno. HTC medical staff also conduct on-site comprehensive clinics in Nevada’s rural communities of Ely, Elko, Winnemucca and the Owyhee Indian Reservation. Funds raised through Golf 4 The Kids will allow for treatment of those without medical insurance and those unable to pay for treatment. It is the mission of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation that no patient in need of medical treatment ever is turned away.

The Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation is the state’s premier advocate for those affected by inherited bleeding disorders, including hemophilia and von Willebrand Disease. Every year, the chapter sends a number of children with inherited bleeding disorders, along with a sibling, to a special, medically supervised summer camp for free. Funds raised through Golf 4 The Kids will allow the chapter to keep the week-long camp a no-cost activity for families. Additionally, the Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation works with state legislators to keep them up to date on the unique needs of those affected by this disease. The chapter also provides a number of support groups and educational seminars around the state to help keep clients up to date on new research and treatment options.

The “Mad Hatter’s” Tea Party to Benefit The Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic for Childhood Cancer Survivor

The “Mad Hatter’s” Tea Party to Benefit The Long-
Term Follow-Up Clinic for Childhood Cancer Survivors

The public is invited to support childhood cancer survivors by enjoying an afternoon of tea, cakes, sandwiches — and a few surprises — at the “Mad Hatter’s” Tea Party on Saturday, April 15, 2017, in the Palm Room at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.

Based on the Lewis Carroll classic story, Alice in Wonderland, the “Mad Hatter’s” Tea Party is a fundraiser in support of Nevada’s Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) Clinic for childhood cancer survivors. The LTFU clinic provides needed testing, annual exams, referrals and education for patients and families about specific risk factors. Information that will help them lead longer and healthier lives.

The survival rate for many forms of childhood cancer is approximately 82%, which is due in large part to aggressive chemotherapy, radiation, and surgeries. These treatments that save the lives of children and young adults often cause side-effects years after treatment is complete. The Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic was created to help childhood cancer survivors – no matter where they received treatment – stay healthy into their adulthood.

“We know cancer treatments have improved dramatically over the years which is incredibly important,” said Danielle Bello, Ph.D, Director of the Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic. “At the same time, there is an incredible need for childhood cancer survivors to understand their specific risks from some cancer treatments and to provide an avenue for the continued monitoring of their health.”

After the initial clinic visit, a binder is presented to each patient with educational information, treatment summary and follow-up recommendations. As time goes on, many childhood cancer survivors may not always remember treatment details or possible side effects 25 years in the future. This permanent record is designed to be shared with future medical providers – no matter what city, state or country in which they reside – so they too can be aware of a patient’s detailed health history. Typically, childhood cancer survivors are seen in the clinic annually and scheduled for any needed testing or follow-up services after their clinic visit. Because of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s 501(c)(3) nonprofit status and mission, these services are available to childhood cancer survivors without medical insurance or without the ability to pay for treatment.

The “Mad Hatter’s” Tea Party is being held in the Palm Room at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas from Noon to 4 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for the event for $130 per person prior to April 1, 2017. After that date, tickets are $150. To purchase tickets and to register ahead of time, please go to https://c4kmadhattea2017.auction-bid.org/microsite/. KTNV Channel 13’s Tricia Kean will serve as the event’s emcee again this year.

Donors who would like to sponsor a childhood cancer survivor to attend the tea party can receive additional information by calling Dawn Marie Bernhard at 702-732-0952.

Along with extravagant offerings of bottomless mimosas, tea, cakes, petit fours, sandwiches and other treats, guests will be entertained by roving characters. In addition to a silent auction, talented balloon artist Tawney Bubbles will design a number of outrageous balloon tea hats for purchase. All donated funds will go toward the Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic for Childhood Cancer Survivors.

Junaisy Vargas, (center), a childhood cancer survivor, and her mother, Glinda Vargas, join characters from Alice in Wonderland during the 2016 Mad Hatter Tea Party benefiting the Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) Clinic for childhood cancer survivors. The LTFU is Nevada’s only clinic providing for the specialized treatment and monitoring needs of childhood cancer survivors as they grow older. The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party event is being held on Saturday, April 15, 2017, at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.
