The Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit is Thursday, March 28, 2019 at The Smith Center

Southern Nevada’s Business Community Invited to the 2019 Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit

Business Leaders Encouraged To Learn About Solutions To Improve Public Education

Nevada’s economic future is directly tied to the success of the state’s public education system, the achievement of its students, as well as the availability of an educated workforce capable of meeting the demands of advancing technologies.

Southern Nevada business leaders are strongly encouraged to gain an understanding of the issues, challenges and successes of the public education system, and also learn what role the business community can play in accelerating these efforts by attending The 2019 Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.

The BE Engaged Summit will run from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. with one 15 minute intermission. A continental breakfast is available prior to the event beginning at 7 a.m. Tickets are $20 and available online at The Smith Center or available at the door on the day of the event.

Now in its third year and supported by local chambers of commerce, business and community organizations, the BE Engaged Summit is presented by a group of volunteers who support increased student achievement and educational outcomes that will advance Nevada’s long-term economic growth. The event was founded by Bank of Nevada CEO John Guedry and his wife Debra, a former public school teacher.

“How the public education system is preparing students for the future workforce should be of interest to every business leader in Southern Nevada,” said John Guedry, Bank of Nevada. “Our state — and our economy — will benefit by working with educators, legislators and others to improve student achievement and ensure the region has an educated workforce able to compete with other states, other regions and countries around the world.”

BE Engaged attendees will gain a greater understanding of several programs that are increasing STEM learning among young students, and helping students see the connection between what they learn in school and possible future careers. In addition, discussions will address the efforts underway to better prepare public school students to be career or college ready at graduation.

This year, a significant portion of the event will be focused on discussions that illustrate what the business community can do to support the public school system. Presentations will include an overview of legislative actions that could benefit public schools and business objectives, and how these opportunities can be supported. In addition, business leaders will learn how companies can support the Clark County School District’s (CCSD) updated strategic plan and higher student achievement goals by adopting a school, becoming a mentor, and working to engage their employees who have students in CCSD.

Business leaders will also hear from two nonprofit organizations that are making a difference in preparing public school students for the future.

The Green Our Planet School Gardens Program has significantly increased Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) learning, and financial literacy skills among students at 160 Clark County School District elementary and middle schools.

Also, The STEM Academy’s Corporate Connections Program is giving middle school students the opportunity to see the connection between their educational performance and success in a future career. Students complete a virtual or hands-on project that is tied to curricular standards and represents problem-solving in a career in our local market. The students are then provided a certificate for competency achievement.

The 2019 Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit is sponsored by Bank of Nevada and supported by the following organizations, including: Asian Chamber of Commerce, Clark County Public Education Foundation, Clark County School District, Council for a Better Nevada, Guinn Center for Policy Priorities, Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce, Latin Chamber of Commerce, Red 7 Communications, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Squeez Marketing, Urban Chamber of Commerce, and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Nevada. VegasPBS is the exclusive media sponsor.

The Business + Education (BE) Engaged Summit will take place on Thursday, March 28, 2019, at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. The BE Engaged Summit is organized by a volunteer group of business leaders and community members who support public education and the efforts aimed at improving student achievement while also preparing students for the future workforce. Attendees will learn about the programs that are helping accomplish these goals and will learn about opportunities to become more involved with local schools. Event tickets are available on the Smith Center website. (Pictured during the first BE Engaged Summit in 2016, L to R: Punam Mather, moderator; Mike Barton, CCSD, Diane Fearon, Former Communities in School CEO; Michael Brown, Barrick Gold; Anthony Martinez, Former Desert Oasis High School student.)

The award-winning design team of Broadway veterans includes Scott Pask (scenic design), Gregg Barnes (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design), Peter Hylenski (sound design), Josh Marquette (hair design), Phil Reno (music direction/conductor), Glen Kelly (arrangements), Larry Hochman (orchestrations), Steve Bebout (associate director) and casting by Telsey + Company/Bethany Knox, CSA.

From the director of ALADDIN, co-director of THE BOOK OF MORMON and the producer of RENT, AVENUE Q and IN THE HEIGHTS, this hilarious new musical comedy tells the story of brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom, two playwrights stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rockstar Will Shakespeare. When a soothsayer foretells the next big thing in theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, the Bottom brothers set out to write the world’s very first MUSICAL! With the most singing, the most dancing and the most gut-busting laughs on Broadway, it’s something wonderful… something for everyone… It’s SOMETHING ROTTEN! – “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years” (Time Out New York)!

With its heart on its ruffled sleeve and sequins in its soul, SOMETHING ROTTEN! is an uproarious dose of pure Broadway fun and an irresistible ode to musicals — those dazzling creations that entertain us, inspire us and remind us that everything’s better with an exclamation point!

Vince Gill and Lyle Lovett Reunite for “Songs and Stories” Tour

Charismatic performers will showcase their musical versatility at The Smith Center, March 24

On Friday, March 24, the always witty Vince Gill and the reliably wry Lyle Lovett will reunite for a one-night-only performance at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas as part of their “Songs and Stories” national tour, kicking off in March 2017 after the duo teamed up for a series of concerts in 2015 and 2016 that left fans begging for more.

A reviewer for Elmore Magazine raved, “The evening reminded me of the Rat Pack, with pals Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra doing comedy and music and having a great time. . . . This was not the show I had looked forward to—it was much better.”

Each show will be a series of intimate solo and duo performances, during which the artists will serve as their own accompanists.

“For a night like this, there is no plan,” Gill said. “I know Lyle won’t have a plan, and I won’t either. What he plays will inspire me, and probably vice-versa. It’ll be like playing ping-pong. Whatever song he chooses to sing will inspire the next song that comes out of me.”

“I enjoy shows that are not planned out,” Lovett observes. “This will be two songwriters in the round. It’s informal, so there will be lots of ad-libbing. It will be like little snapshots of our experiences.”

Both performers have reaped armfuls of Grammys and kindred laurels for their musical versatility and memory-engraving songwriting.

“Just two guys sitting on stools, telling stories and singing songs,” Gill says. “No big bands.  I saw James Taylor once with just him and his guitar, and after that show I felt like I knew him a whole lot better than I ever did before. That’s what’ll happen between Lyle and me, too, and I’m looking forward to it.”

The Smith Center Hosts Celebration of Any Given Child’s Fifth Anniversary

Elaine Wynn, Mayor Carolyn Goodman among attendees recognizing program for arts in education

To celebrate the fifth anniversary of Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child Southern Nevada, The Smith Center hosted an event yesterday, Oct. 4 that recognized all parties involved with successfully launching the national program at a local level. Provided by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Any Given Child assists communities in creating strategic plans to ensure access and equity to quality arts education for local students.

Event attendees included Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Elaine Wynn, Clark County School District (CCSD) Superintendent Pat Skorkowsky, and Mario Rossero, Senior Vice President of Education at the Kennedy Center. Representatives were also present from the many organizations on the Community Arts Team that helped launch the Southern Nevada program.

“The Kennedy Center created something really special that we get to be a part of,” said Smith Center CEO and President, Myron Martin. “Las Vegas was an early city to take this on, so we’re proud of that.”

In Dec. 2010, Las Vegas became the fourth city nationwide to participate in Any Given Child. To roll out this initiative, the Community Arts Team comprised of local arts and education-related organizations collected a year of data and formed a corresponding strategy.

The program has since expanded to 23 cities, Rossero said, but Las Vegas remains the largest Any Given Child program in the U.S. Rossero lauded the efforts of Candy Schneider, President of Education and Outreach at The Smith Center, as well as the Community Arts Team in making the program successful.

“This is a big deal,” said Rossero. “This fifth anniversary really means a lot and you’ve accomplished a lot.”

In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the Southern Nevada program kicked off with 26 pilot CCSD schools and approximately 18,000 students being served with arts resources, as well as 85 teachers participating in arts-integrated professional development workshops. By the 2015-16 fiscal year, this had expanded to approximately 143,000 students from 356 CCSD, charter and private schools being served with arts resources, and 884 teachers participating in professional development workshops.

The arts resources schools have enjoyed include: field trips to venues throughout the community, artist residencies and in-school performances, and professional development for teachers to integrate the arts into math, science, language arts and social studies. Community organizations have provided all of these resources free of charge.

Speaking in her role as president of the Nevada State Board of Education, Wynn praised the success of the program and how it plants seeds of inspiration among local children.

“Maybe (Southern Nevada Any Given Child) will serve as a blueprint for other places as it continues to unfold,” said Wynn.

Recalling how much he was impacted by seeing theatrical productions as a child, Skorkowsky said the program has helped develop CCSD into a leader in fine arts education.

“We have to build that passion in our children and expose them to those opportunities,” said Skorkowsky.

Mayor Goodman lauded how organizations across the community have come together to bring the arts to local students of many age groups.

“I can assure you the city is fully supportive of and behind the arts,” she said. “Especially this program.”

Organizations on the Community Arts Team behind the program include: After-School All Stars, CCSD, the city of Henderson, the Las Vegas Office of Cultural Affairs, Clark County Parks and Recreation, Discovery Children’s Museum, Las Vegas Arts Commission, Las Vegas Youth Orchestras, Metro Arts Council of Southern Nevada, Nevada Ballet Theatre, Nevada School of the Arts, The Public Education Foundation, The Rainbow Company Youth Theatre, West Las Vegas Arts Center, The Smith Center, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, The Kennedy Center, the Nevada Arts Council and principal leadership from CVT Gilbert and Frank Lamping elementary schools.

Thelma Davis, principal of Robert Lunt Elementary School in Las Vegas, said Any Given Child has provided students at her school with access to the arts they wouldn’t otherwise have. Teachers have also informed her that they have completely changed their teaching styles as a result of professional development to integrate the arts across curriculum areas.

“Without the Southern Nevada Ensuring the Arts for Any Given Child initiative, this opportunity (for arts integration) would be just out of reach,” said Davis.

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts introduced a new initiative to connect with young professionals who love the arts on Aug. 17, when the performing arts complex hosted a launch event for its FANFARE! networking and affinity group. Created for rising professionals ages 21 to 40, the group provides a broad network of community members passionate about the arts, with a variety of benefits for members.

Encouraging young professional leaders to build a relationship with The Smith Center, FANFARE! offers an insider’s experience of the world-class performing arts center, along with ongoing networking opportunities. The group’s activities include seasonal events exploring the arts and culture scene in Las Vegas, allowing members to rub elbows with fellow arts aficionados and experience special access to cultural hot spots across the community.

Alisa Nave-Worth, a member of The Smith Center President’s Advisory Council, played a key role in developing the new group. She felt inspired to connect young business leaders with The Smith Center as a result of her own rewarding experiences with supporting the arts in Las Vegas, she said.

“FANFARE! is a new resource for the young professional leaders in Las Vegas to get a behind-the-scenes understanding of The Smith Center and all that it brings to our community,” Nave-Worth said. “It is going to be a unique opportunity to begin a lifelong relationship with the cultural heart of the Valley and to become a future leader of The Smith Center.”

The group’s name derives from the multicolored Pipe Dreams sculpture at The Smith Center that was inspired by Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” reflecting The Smith Center’s mission to serve the common man.

The launch event for FANFARE! included a happy hour and exclusive backstage tour. The group’s upcoming activities this year include a Broadway Series event, plus special access to The Smith Center’s Cabaret Jazz venue. Membership is required to attend all of the group’s events.

After having been introduced to Akhmatova through a book of Russian poetry given to her by a friend, DeMent embarked on the project as a way to more deeply connect with the culture of her daughter, who she and her husband, the musician Greg Brown, adopted from Siberia in 2005. The poems, which immediately resonated for DeMent’s gift as a singer, The Oxford American beautifully describes her as being “capable of carrying so much exultation on the one hand and so much sorrow on the other, with so little costomery or ornamentation, that it can seem as if she has lived an entire life inside every note she delivers.”

In truth, his phrasing is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother, and his timing swings even more. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable, sometimes spoken and articulate – make him the most respected lyrical storyteller in jazz.
