Swift Will Open the Show with the World Television Premiere of “Blank Space”

The Show Will Broadcast Live SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd
(8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC

dick clark productions and ABC announced today that Taylor Swift will be presented with the inaugural “Dick Clark Award for Excellence” at the 2014 American Music Awards.  Swift will be recognized for her historical album sales as the only artist in history to have three albums – “Speak Now, “Red” and “1989” — each debuting with more than 1 million sold in their first week. This year, in its first week, “1989” sold 1.287 million copies, making it the highest selling album released in 2014. Swift is the first recipient of the Dick Clark Award for Excellence, given to an artist who achieves a groundbreaking feat or creates a landmark work.  It is to be bestowed upon someone whose spirit and excellence capture the visionary passion that Dick Clark himself incorporated into everything he did.

Clark, the creator of the 42-year-old American Music Awards, influenced popular music in America for six decades. He was known for maintaining a standard of excellence both in the shows he produced and in the talent that he showcased. Simultaneously “America’s Oldest Teenager” and the most trusted name in music, Clark was responsible for the first TV appearances of many superstars including Michael Jackson, Madonna and Prince. Taylor Swift, who also made her debut on a Dick Clark Production show, will be honored with this prestigious award with Clark’s wife, Kari, in the audience, along with a theatre full of stars who grew up on Clark’s programs. This promises to be one of the most significant moments in the rich history of the AMA’s.

“The first time Dick saw Taylor perform, he knew she was something special,” said Kari Clark, wife of the late Dick Clark.  “He would be thrilled to know she is the first artist to receive the Dick Clark Award for Excellence.”

“The American Music Awards most closely reflects Dick Clark’s philosophy of popular music. It provides a platform for the biggest music artists of the day, with the winners voted on by the fans,” said American Music Awards producer Larry Klein.  “Clark always said, ‘Music is the soundtrack of our lives,’ and no one’s recent music has provided a more meaningful soundtrack for the lives of music fans than Taylor Swift.”

Swift will also take to the stage to open the show with the world television premiere performance of her new single “Blank Space”.  She joins a line-up of must-see artists including 5 Seconds of Summer, Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Charli XCX, Fergie, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Imagine Dragons, Jessie J, Lil Wayne, Lorde, Magic!, Nicki Minaj, One Direction, Sam Smith, and the evening’s host, Pitbull.  Additional stars slated to present throughout the evening include Uzo Aduba, Jhene Aiko, Elizabeth Banks, Aloe Blacc, Lauren Cohan, Gavin DeGraw, Ansel Elgort, Jamie Foxx, Becky G, Brantley Gilbert, Danai Gurira, Lucy Hale, Ella Henderson, Julianne Hough, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Kira Kazantsev, Heidi Klum, Mary Lambert, Rose McGowan, Danica McKellar, Pat Monahan, Olivia Munn, Kevin O’Leary, Pentatonix, Tracee Ellis Ross, Taylor Schilling and Meghan Trainor. The 2014 American Music Awards will broadcast live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC.  Additional performers and presenters will be announced soon.

Taylor Swift is the only artist in history to have three million-selling weeks (2010’s Speak Now, 2012’s RED and 2014’s 1989) and the only artist to have two singles hit No. 1 on Billboards HOT 100 Chart this year. Taylor is a global superstar and seven-time GRAMMY winner, and the youngest winner in history of the music industry’s highest honor, the GRAMMY Award for Album of the Year. She is the first artist since the Beatles (and the only female artist in history) to log six or more weeks at #1 in the U.S. with three consecutive studio albums. Taylor has an album on Rolling Stone’s prestigious The 50 Greatest Albums of All Time (by women) list, Time magazine has named her one the of the 100 Most Influential People in the world, and she is Billboard’s youngest-ever Woman of the Year and the only artist to have been awarded this honor twice. Taylor has career record sales in excess of 30 million albums and more than 80 million song downloads worldwide, and has had singles top both the pop and country radio charts around the globe. Taylor’s album RED, released two years ago, sold more than 1.2 million copies in the U.S. in its first week. The only other album to sell more than RED was her critically acclaimed fifth studio album, 1989, the highest selling release since 2002 and the only album to go platinum in 2014. 1989 sold almost 1.3 million albums release week topping Billboard’s Top 200 charts and iTunes’ sales charts in 95 countries on its release. 1989 has sold almost three million copies globally and tops Billboard Top 200 for a third week.  “Shake It Off,” the first single from 1989, topped Billboard’s Pop, HotAC and Hot 100 charts and has earned double Platinum-status by the RIAA for exceeding sales of two million downloads in the U.S.  Her current single “Blank Space,” immediately skyrocketed to the top of the Hot 100 and iTunes chart on its debut.

NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC.  Additional performers and presenters will be announced soon.

As always at the American Music Awards, artists will be honored in the genres of Pop/Rock, Country, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul/R&B, Alternative Rock, Adult Contemporary, Latin, Contemporary Inspirational, Electronic Dance Music, as well as categories for Top Soundtrack, New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s, Artist of the Year and Single of the Year. FERGIE, LORDE AND ONE DIRECTION TO PERFORM AT
THE 2014 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS®
The Show Will Broadcast Live SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC

dick clark productions announced today that Fergie, Lorde and One Direction will join the growing list of superstars set to perform at the 2014 American Music Awards.  Fergie will take to the stage to make her worldwide television debut performing her first single, since 2006, “L.A. LOVE (la la),” from her upcoming album. After stealing the music scene in 2013, Lorde will be performing for the first time at the 2014 American Music Awards. International sensation One Direction will perform a song off of their highly anticipated album, FOUR. In just four short years, the band has achieved a staggering 94 number one tracks and over 46 million records sold. Also scheduled to appear at the world’s biggest fan-voted award show are previously announced 5 Seconds of Summer, Charli XCX, Mary J. Blige, Sam Smith and the evening’s host, Pitbull. The 2014 American Music Awards will broadcast live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT) on ABC.  Additional performers and presenters will be announced soon.

Fergie recently announced that she has been in the studio working on the follow-up to her 2006 solo album The Dutchess, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 and spent 94 weeks on the chart.  The album went on to sell 6.2 million copies and 28.5 million tracks worldwide and spawned three No. 1 hits on the Hot 100: “London Bridge,” “Glamorous,” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” as well as the Top 5 singles “Fergalicious” and “Clumsy”.  Since The Dutchess’ release, Fergie has also released two multi-Platinum albums, The E.N.D. and The Beginning, with The Black Eyed Peas– with whom she has sold 31 million albums and 58 million singles worldwide. The Black Eyed Peas’ videos have been viewed over 1.8 billion times on their YouTube channel.

New Zealand native and multiplatinum GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artist Lorde splashed on to the scene last year with her debut single “Royals,” which became an international hit landing her atop the Billboard Hot 100 and made her the youngest solo artist to achieve a U.S. number one since 1987, as well as holding the longest standing #1 for any female artist in the Billboard Alternative Chart history.   In September 2013, following her single’s success, Lorde released her debut studio album PURE HEROINE with Lava/Republic Records. The record sky-rocketed on the charts and has sold more than 1.5 million records to date.  Other singles from the album include “Tennis Court” and “Team” which both became top-ten worldwide hits.  On September 29th, Lorde released “Yellow Flicker Beat” the first single from the soundtrack of the greatly anticipated film THE HUNGER GAMES:  MOCKINGJAY – PART 1.  Upon impacting airwaves, the song made history by becoming the #1 Most Added song at Alternative Radio and set a new record for “Most Adds on a Female Artist” in Mediabase History.  Not only is “Yellow Flicker Beat” the #1 iTunes Soundtrack Song currently, it entered the Top 10 at Alternative Radio in just 3 short weeks.

One Direction has gone from energetic pop upstarts to international superstars. As the band’s song writing becomes more personal with each record, FOUR is set to be their most stunning and evolved yet. The album follows the global success of their huge sell out WHERE WE ARE stadium tour and the 3-D film documentary THIS IS US. Fans also had the opportunity to relive this summers’ tour with the release of their second film WHERE WE ARE: THE CONCERT FILM, which broke records as the largest audience across one weekend ever seen by Event Cinema theatres. The WHERE WE ARE: THE CONCERT FILM DVD will be released on December 2. Add all this to their 3 billion YouTube views, 109 million combined Twitter followers and 33 million Facebook fans and it’s clear that Liam, Harry, Louis, Niall and Zayn genuinely are a worldwide phenomenon. FOUR will be released globally on November 17, 2014 via Syco/Columbia Records and includes the lead single “Steal My Girl.”

The 2014 American Music Award nominations were announced earlier this month, revealing that Iggy Azalea is up for six awards–the most of any artist.  Other top contenders include John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, who each earned five nominations, and Lorde who earned four.

American Music Awards
JASON DERULO AND CHARLI XCX TO ANNOUNCE
2014 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS® NOMINEES LIVE ON
“GOOD MORNING AMERICA” ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 13ABC AND DICK CLARK PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCE DATE FOR
THE 2014 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

The 2014 American Music Awards will broadcast live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23rd (8:00-11:00 pm ET/PT) on ABC. New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s, Artist of the Year, and “Single of the Year.”

Five years since making his debut in pop music, Jason Derulo has sold more than 45 million records worldwide and amassed more than 1.3 billion views on his YouTube channel.  His last song, “Wiggle” featuring Snoop Dogg is his eighth song to reach the Top 10 on the Top 40 format and his ninth platinum-selling single.  The video for the track has amassed over 300 million views. Derulo’s ubiquitous hit “Talk Dirty” featuring 2 Chainz is his most successful track to date, having sold more than six million copies worldwide. The Miami-native’s career started when he was 16 years old and began writing songs for artists including Lil Wayne, Pitbull, Diddy, Sean Kingston, Cassie and Danity Kane.  Derulo’s current hit “Trumpets” will be the fifth single from his most recent album, Talk Dirty, to go platinum- an accomplishment reached by only eight other artists since 2007 including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.

London-based singer and songwriter Charli XCX is quickly proving an unqualified phenomenon with her edgy, yet addictive approach. Since her first critically-acclaimed track, “Nuclear Seasons” in 2011, the 22 year-old, Charlotte Aitchison, co-wrote the #1 smash single, “Fancy” with Iggy Azalea, and penned last year’s double platinum summer it-song, “I Love It” recorded by Icona Pop, which she is featured on. Most recently, Charli XCX released the platinum selling “Boom Clap” single from the ‘The Fault in Our Stars: Music From the Motion Picture’ soundtrack, landing the #1 spot on Top 40 radio along, with a brand new song, “Break The Rules” from her forthcoming sophomore studio album, “Sucker” arriving December 16th via Neon Gold/Atlantic Records.

The “2014 American Music Awards” is produced by dick clark productions. Allen Shapiro and Mike Mahan are Executive Producers. Larry Klein, Barry Adelman and Mark Bracco are Producers.

Last year, ABC’s broadcast of the “2013 American Music Awards” made it the dominant No. 1 non-sports net from 8:00-11:00 p.m. in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

  • Surging by over 30% year to year in Total Viewers (+36%) and Adults 18-49 (+32%), the “American Music Awards” earned 4-year highs in viewers and young adults (since 2009), representing the show’s 2nd-biggest audience in 11 years (since 2002). Hosted by Pitbull, the “AMAs” spiked 86% year to year in Teens 12-17 to deliver a 9-year high – since 2004.
  • Despite the substantial competition, the “2013 American Music Awards” scored ABC’s highest entertainment numbers in the 3-hour time period in 9 months with viewers and young adults – since the “Academy Awards” on 2/24/13.
  • ABC’s “American Music Awards” stood as the No. 1 most social program on television Sunday (including all sports and all cable across the entire day) with 7.6 million tweets and 5.1 tweets per unique user.
