Golden Gate to Pop the Champagne for 112th Birthday, Jan. 1

Iconic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino to Pop the Champagne for 112th Birthday, Jan. 13

Founded in 1906, Las Vegas’ original hotel to celebrate with special birthday shots, match play and more

From hosting the Rat Pack to housing Vegas’ first telephone, the historic Golden Gate Hotel & Casino will celebrate 112 years of service in Las Vegas this Saturday, January 13. Founded in 1906, the iconic property invites guests to a commemorative celebration, which will include free champagne for visitors who join its One Card™ loyalty program; $25 match play; and special Birthday Cake shots for 99 cents – a nod to the original shrimp cocktail price.

“It has been an honor to be a part of the influential evolution of Golden Gate in Downtown Las Vegas,” said CEO Derek Stevens. “We are grateful for how Golden Gate has paved the way for new properties such as our neighboring 18 Fremont project, and we are thrilled to see it’s continuous adaption to the community.”

Golden Gate has celebrated some of the most colorful moments in Vegas history, spanning the roaring 20s, the prohibition era and now the 21st century. Sharing its birth year with other momentous occasions, here are other notable events and facts that happened in 1906:

  • The Las Vegas and Tonopah Railroad was built.
  • The population of Las Vegas was only 30.
  • The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
  • President Theodore Roosevelt is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in negotiating peace in the Russo-Japanese War.
  • The average life expectancy in the United States was 47.
  • The first animated cartoon was copyrighted.
  • The Chicago White Sox win their First World Series by defeating their crosstown rival Chicago Cubs on October 14.
  • 90 percent of all doctors had no college education.

The growth of Golden Gate Hotel & Casino has contributed to the vision of providing classic yet modern hospitality offerings to guests in Downtown Las Vegas. The property recently went through an exquisite renovation that nearly doubled the casino in size; added a dramatic entry way on Fremont Street Experience; and extended its high-energy outdoor bar, OneBar at One Fremont Street.

The revitalization will complement Derek and Greg Stevens vision for their upcoming 18 Fremont hotel-casino property, formally known as the Las Vegas Club. Sitting across from Golden Gate, the brothers will usher in a new wave of modern hotel design to Downtown Las Vegas.

The 112th anniversary offerings will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Happy Trails, Vegas Vickie: Downtown Las Vegas Kicking Cowgirl to be Lowered June 12

HAPPY TRAILS, VEGAS VICKIE:

DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS’ BELOVED KICKING COWGIRL TO RIDE INTO THE SUNSET ON JUNE 12

Iconic Neon Sign to be Taken Down as Part of Construction for New Downtown Las Vegas Resort-Casino

Downtown Las Vegas’ beloved cowgirl, Vegas Vickie, will kick her legs one last time before being lowered from her perch overlooking Fremont Street Experience on Monday, June 12. An iconic piece of Las Vegas history, the neon sign will be taken down as part of the construction for the highly anticipated resort-casino slated to transform the space previously occupied by Las Vegas Club.

“I have always been a big fan of Vickie’s, but we know she’s ready for some much need rest and relaxation,” said Derek Stevens, CEO of the D Las Vegas, Golden Gate Hotel & Casino and the upcoming resort project. “We are on the active hunt to find the best home possible for our girl, as she is truly a key part of the Las Vegas story.”

Originally dubbed Sassy Sally after a casino of that name, the sign was created in 1980 by Ad Art’s Jack Dubois and Charles Barnard for Bob Stupak’s Glitter Gulch. She was later called Vegas Vickie, and gained national attention in 1994 when she “married” her neighboring neon cowboy, Vegas Vic, who currently stands over the former Pioneer Club building.

Nevada Stupak, the son of Bob Stupak, said “Vegas Vickie has brought joy to so many people from around the world, and we hope locals and tourists alike will stop by to take a photo with her one last time.”

In 2016, Derek and Greg Stevens acquired three Granite Gaming Group properties, including Topless Girls of Glitter Gulch, Mermaids and La Bayou casinos. Glitter Gulch and Mermaids will be incorporated into their plans for the site of the Las Vegas Club, which will become a new resort-casino concept on the world-famous Fremont Street Experience.

Las Vegas residents are encouraged to pay homage to Vegas Vickie before she saddles up for her next adventure. Along with Vegas Vickie, the letters found in the Las Vegas Club signage will be removed Monday as well.

Las Vegas Hotels Become First Casino Properties to Accept Bitcoin

LAS VEGAS HOTELS BECOME FIRST CASINO PROPERTIES TO ACCEPT BITCOIN

Virtual Currency Accepted As Payment At Hotels, Restaurants

The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel and Golden Gate Hotel & Casino located in downtown Las Vegas will become the first casino properties to accept Bitcoin. The D and Golden Gate will begin accepting the popular digital currency beginning Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Between the two co-owned properties, Bitcoin will be accepted at five locations, including both hotels’ front desks and in the D’s Gift Shop. Guests at the D will also be able to purchase Detroit’s legendary Coney Dogs at American Coney Island and enjoy fine dining at Joe Vicari’s Andiamo Italian Steakhouse.

Bitcoin purchases at the casino hotels will be processed through BitPay, a service that streamlines transactions using tablet and mobile interfaces. Tablets programmed with BitPay will be installed at each cashier, allowing Bitcoin users to easily pay for services using their mobile wallets.

Although plans to process Bitcoin had been discussed, Stevens, who is locally known to socialize with customers at the casino’s LONGBAR, says that several patrons approached him asking if his properties accept the virtual currency. The guest demand provided the impetus to quickly move forward with incorporating the option to pay with Bitcoin at the D and Golden Gate.

“I’m proud that the D and Golden Gate will be the first casino properties to accept Bitcoin,” said co-owner and CEO of the D and Golden Gate, Derek Stevens. “We’re located in the growing high-tech sector of downtown Las Vegas, and like all things downtown, we’re quickly adaptive to new technology. The timing is right for us to launch this initiative, and I’m happy to be able to offer this to our customers.”

Built in 1906, Golden Gate is Las Vegas’ oldest casino. The historic hotel has always been a forerunner in adopting technology – the city’s first telephone was installed in 1907 (the phone number was 1!) In a unique juxtaposition of the old and new, Golden Gate’s lobby will now house Bitcoin processing technology just steps from an artifact display case containing an authentic model of the 1907 Kellogg telephone.

Stevens opened the D in 2012, introducing a hotel casino to match the trendy, forward-thinking style of the burgeoning downtown Las Vegas neighborhood. To create the modern vibe, the existing property located on the Fremont Street Experience received a complete overhaul, incorporating chic design elements, renovating the guest rooms, adding a collection of high-end suites and emphasizing entertainment, nightlife and restaurants alongside the casino.

GOLDEN GATE TOASTS TO REPEAL DAY WITH NEW NAME FOR ITS CASINO
BAR – “BAR PROHIBITION!”

Historic Property Invites Downtown Partiers to Celebrate 80th Anniversary
of Repeal Day at Vegas’ Original Dec. 5, 2013

This Repeal Day, Golden Gate Hotel & Casino will celebrate eighty years since the dark days of Prohibition by fittingly renaming its original casino bar, “Bar Prohibition!

On Dec. 5, 2013, Las Vegas’ original invites downtown celebrants to help toast to the bar’s new name and decades of serving alcohol (legally, of course!) with an all-night party and classic drinks from the Prohibition Cocktail Menu. Inspired by Golden Gate’s storied past, the menu is highlighted by creative takes on historic recipes with unique libations such as the “Flaming Side Car,” “The Prohibition,” and “Italian Kiss.” Each cocktail on the specialty menu is served in a discreet coffee mug – a method employed by Prohibition drinkers to elude lawmakers.

Throughout its long history, the original bar has operated under many guises, including a Wild West watering hole on the last frontier, a place for the wild women of the roaring 20s to let loose, and a whiskey-washed hangout frequented by Frank, Sammy and Dean during the Rat Pack era. During renovations, glass liquor bottles from the early 1900s were found tucked into the hotel’s walls, perhaps hidden during a bygone era when the city of Sin operated under a different set of rules.

The Golden Gate has been partying since 1906 and Bar Prohibition! will continue the legacy that spans more than a century.
