Nevada Reading Week 2015 March 2 – 6
Donated books will be personally delivered by King to kids in at-risk schools during Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour: Nevada Reading Week 2015. Each year during Nevada Reading Week, King visits students at local elementary schools to teach the importance of literacy by reading stories and performing tricks from his show. Thanks to book drives held throughout the year, at the end of the assembly, each child is able to take a book home with them. For many kids this is the first book they can call their own. Local businesses and organizations interested in joining forces with Mac King by hosting a book drive to benefit Nevada Reading Week 2015 can email Lauren@preferredpublicrelations.com for more information.

About Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour:
Comedy-Magician Mac King has been a life-long advocate for childhood literacy and since settling down in Las Vegas, has made it his mission to promote literacy in Southern Nevada.

For years King has visited local elementary schools, spreading the importance of literacy to local students. In 2011 King decided to take his philanthropic efforts to the next level and launched Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour, a citywide literacy initiative to foster the love of reading and rally community organizations to raise books for Las Vegas school children.

The tour kicked off during Nevada Reading Week 2011 and since then has collected more than 10,000 books by partnering with several local organizations including: Las Vegas Wranglers, Springs Preserve, Winder Farms, Sky Zone Las Vegas, Grimaldi’s Pizzeria and Las Vegas 51’s Baseball Team.

Sam’s Town Live!, located inside Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall, is home to a new, indoor weekly farmers’ market – every Thursday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Several farmers and vendors will offer a variety of products, including seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbs, breads and other items. Market attendees can anticipate something different every week, as farmers’ selections vary seasonally.

Though likely to rotate weekly, vendors include: Pahrump Honey Company (honey products including flavored honey sticks and honey combs); Vegas Valley Organics (offering a CSA program – community supported agriculture – and fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts and olive oil); Two Lazy Sisters (from Overton, Nev. – fresh vegetables, jams and bread); Crossfire Ranch (from Sandy Valley, Nev. – fresh herbs and vegetables); and Mrs. H. Produce (from the Fresno, Calif. area – seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and raisins).

Two additional Las Vegas-based merchants include Sassy Salsas (fresh salsa made with farmers’ market produce) and Crave Balance Bars (raw, vegan, gluten-free snack bars). A bread baker (corn, zucchini, lemon, short and walnut breads), a fresh lemonade stand, a clean air product maker and the well-known home delivery service, Winder Farms, are among the vendors regularly expected at the Market.

In addition to being open to the public, area restaurants may also place orders in advance with individual vendors for pick up on the day of the Market.

To celebrate the launch of the upcoming turkey drive, more than 15 employees from both Las Vegas and Utah visited Three Square Food Bank, located at 4190 N. Pecos Rd., to participate in a hands-on service project. On Thursday, Oct. 11 employees helped fill more than 1,100 bags of nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf-stable food to be given to children who lack adequate food over the weekend as part of Three Square’s “BackPack for Kids” Program. The team also packed boxes of healthy supplemental groceries including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins for Three Square’s Senior Share Program.

“Winder Farms is a proud community partner of Three Square and what better way to kick off another great annual initiative than to roll up our sleeves and experience first-hand the invaluable programs and services this organization provides to the Las Vegas community,” Tanner added.

In addition to the holiday turkey drive, Winder Farms supports Three Square throughout the year by providing them with food donations from the Las Vegas office as well as by making it easy for customers to donate money with an option to make a donation when placing their weekly order.

Not a Winder Farms customer? Not a problem… log on to winderfarms.com and sign up using the promotional code “TSFB13” and Winder Farms will donate an additional $25 to the charity.

During Special School Assembly on Oct. 16

Winder Farms, Comedy-Magician Mac King and The Public Education Foundation surprised the students at Gordon M. McCaw Elementary School with a special visit on Tuesday, Oct. 16. The event was the culmination of the Second Annual Delivering Magic Book Drive and featured performances from Mac King, and a $2,500 check presentation and snacks from Winder Farms.

In September, Winder Farms partnered with Mac King’s Magical Literacy Tour and Clark County READS for The Second Annual Delivering Magic Book Drive to provide local public elementary schools with much needed funds and books. Winder Farms customers donated new and gently used books for local elementary school children and were rewarded for their generosity with free tickets to The Mac King Comedy Magic Show, and a chance to win free groceries and the opportunity to direct money to the public elementary school of their choice. This year’s first place winner, Charity Kerr, chose Gordon McCaw Elementary School to win the donation and special assembly.

Winder Farms presented a $2,500 check to the school’s principal, Jennifer Furman-Born, during the special assembly. Then students were treated to a special performance by Harrah’s Headliner and Comedy Magician Mac King, where he performed some magic tricks and talked with the students about the importance of reading and the impact it had on his life. After the assembly, Winder Farms representatives were on site to hand out fresh fruit and chocolate milk and students were able to meet “Mookie” the Winder Farms Mascot.
