LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – Lindy La Rocque has been named the new head women’s basketball coach at UNLV, Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois announced Wednesday.

A key part of 11 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, La Rocque is returning to her native Las Vegas where she prepped at Durango High School before playing in four straight Final Fours as a student-athlete at Stanford University. She has been an assistant coach with the Cardinal for the last three years under legendary head coach and Hall of Famer Tara VanDerveer.

“We are so enthused about bringing Coach La Rocque back to Las Vegas to lead our women’s basketball program,” Reed-Francois said. “Our pool of candidates was exceptional, but Lindy’s character, intellect and energy really stood out. She has worked for and learned from some of the best leaders in sports history and is a rising star in coaching. She will be a great fit for our program, university and in the community.”

On the coaching staff at Stanford since 2017, the program consistently ranked among the top 10 in the country. The Cardinal made NCAA Tournament appearances in each season, including two Sweet 16s, an Elite Eight and won the Pac-12 Conference Tournament Championship in 2019. From 2017-20, Stanford had an overall record of 82-22 and was 43-10 in conference play.

“I am so thrilled to be able to come back to my hometown of Las Vegas to lead the UNLV women’s basketball program,” La Rocque said. “It is truly special to return to a place and in a community that has essentially raised and has supported me throughout all of my life. I have been a Rebel fan since I was a young girl and to now be the head coach at UNLV is truly a dream come true. Thank you to Desiree Reed-Francois and President Meana for this incredible opportunity and for their belief and trust in me to lead these young women. I cannot wait to get started!”

Prior to coaching at Stanford, La Rocque spent two seasons (2015-17) as an assistant coach at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, helping the Bruins to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths, including the program’s first in nine seasons. Belmont went 51-15 overall and 29-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play during La Rocque’s time there, winning the league’s regular-season championship during the 2016-17 season and the conference’s tournament title both seasons.

La Rocque began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma, working for Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer Sherri Coale, while pursuing her master’s degree in education. The team played in both the 2014 and 2015 NCAA Tournaments.

La Rocque played at Stanford from 2008-12, appearing in 138 career games which ranks eighth in program history. She was instrumental in helping the Cardinal compile a 137-12 overall record during her four years, including an amazing 71-1 mark in Pac-12 play. Her team won four regular season conference championships and four league tournament titles, appearing in the NCAA Tournament each season and advancing to the national title game in 2010.

The eighth full-time head coach in UNLV women’s basketball history, La Rocque is the first originally from Las Vegas to be hired to lead the Lady Rebel program.

La Rocque earned a bachelor’s degree in science, technology and society, with an emphasis in earth systems, civil and environmental engineering, and calculus from Stanford in 2012. She holds a master’s degree in adult and higher education from Oklahoma, which she earned in 2015.

La Rocque was a decorated student-athlete at Durango High School in Las Vegas, where she became the school’s (boy’s and girl’s) all-time leading scorer with 2,678 points and holds many other program records.

Rock the Vote for Mindy Robinson for Congress

As the elections come we at Vegas24seven are interested in hearing from the conservative’s in Nevada. We sat down via email with Mindy Robinson.

Who are you running against?
My competition for the Republican primary are two guys named Dan, and my opponent for the general election would be an the incumbent Democrat Susie Lee that voted for impeachment…in a district that voted for Trump. Mindy is currently running for Congress in district 3 Nevada.

How long have you lived in Nevada?
I’ve been a resident for over 6 years. I moved here to escape the lunacy of the Left in California…only to find that it‘s slowly creeping over here into Nevada.

How long have you been in politics?
I majored in American History and Political Science, but I never really utilized that education until right before the 2016 election when I started commenting about politics online. I have a way of explaining things simply and with humor…which seems to attract a lot of people on both sides of the fence.

Can you tell us what you think about the Governor of Nevada?
I am not a fan of our current governor. The way he’s going about it now, Nevadans are looking at having an income tax where we never had one before. People go out of their way to invest and locate their businesses here specifically because it’s a tax haven…why would you ever want to ruin such a beneficial and productive set up?

Do you think our Nevada will turn Red?
I think gun-friendly, business friendly, freedom-loving Nevada is already a red state. Unfortunately, it’s just too easy to commit election fraud with the way things are currently set up now, and it’s showing.

What are you thoughts on voter fraud. What would you do to help change it?
Right now, I could sign up 100 people to a vacant address or P.O. Box and then use the ballots they mail to vote fraudulently and unchecked by authorities. I believe we need to clean up our polls, and we absolutely need to enact a mandatory state ID check to secure the integrity of all future elections. If we don’t get on top of this now, the citizens of Nevada may never have a voice again.

Giving what is happening now in Nevada with the virus. Do you think we will recover?
We’ve survived a Civil War, two World Wars, and the Great Depression…I believe we will recover from this as well. Soldiering on and overcoming obstacles is what Americans have always done best. I only hope our media acknowledges how we’re coming together over this, instead of using it to further divide us.

Mindy added:
In conclusion, I know I am not the typical political candidate usually seen running for Congress. My political experience mostly revolves around discussing issues on a national level over social media. But I’ve been able to use my platform before to highlight local issues and actually get something done about it. When our attorney general Aaron Ford wanted to pass a law that would allow intruders or their families to sue home owners for defending themselves in their home homes, I lead an online campaign to get it pulled…and it worked. Imagine if I highlighted all the corruption in the state on a national level how fast it would be addressed instead of being ignored like usual? Like many people, I’m tired of all the do-nothing politicians in office on both sides that have only their self interest in mind. I can be the vocal activist in Congress we need to defend our constitutional rights and freedoms that are currently being stripped away in southern Nevada…but I‘ll still need your vote in the primaries June 9th to get there!

The Pop-Up Market Will Feature Essentials Including Eggs, Milk and Toilet Paper

The Stove located in Henderson is launching a temporary pop-up market as an effort to aid their guests in need. With the high demand for essentials such as eggs, milk, and toilet paper, and scarce conditions at local supermarkets, The Stove felt the need to fill a void in their neighborhood.

“We do not wish to see our guests and the elderly community go without due to these times of uncertainty,” said Executive Chef and Part Owner Antonio Nunez. “The current scenes at local grocery stores may be too stressful for seniors to endure, and buying in bulk may not be feasible for individuals, so we wanted to offer an alternative.”

The Stove plans to sell their overstock of items through depletion, but they do warn guests that there is a limit on items to avoid hoarding. The household items that will be sold include:

  • Local farm fresh milk ($5.50/gallon)

  • Local farm fresh eggs ($3.50/dozen)

  • Toilet paper ($1.50/roll)

  • Fettuccine ($2/pound)

  • Instant oatmeal (.40 cents)

  • Canned chicken broth ($5.50/50oz.)

  • Chicken soup ($1.25/7.25oz.)

  • Tomato soup ($5.50/50oz.)

  • Gatorade ($1.50/20oz.)

  • Half & half ($4/qt.)

  • Butter ($1.75/stick)

  • Hand sanitizer ($4/2oz.)

Items will be available for purchase as soon as March 17th at The Stove’s pop-up market which will take place inside their private dining room. Priority will be given to their senior guests and availability is based on a first-come-first-serve basis. The market hours are Monday-Sunday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., or until stock runs out.

The Stove features multi-dimensional design dining experiences by celebrity chef Scott Commings, celebrated Vegas Valley local chef, Antonio Nunez, and General Contractor Steve Grodkiewicz. Leisurely lounging at the main bar overlooking the main dining room with a pastry bar sets the scene for the backdrop of the restaurant. The adjacent room has the feel of a speakeasy as you enter, but the setting of a Mad Hatter tea room with an edgy, one-of-a-kind twist to service. New to the restaurant’s offering is the Chambong (champagne-meets-bong) experience all set to breathtaking views of the Valley. Not only did Lee produce ‘Money Talk$,’ but she also wrote and co-wrote every song included on the album.

Lee’s collaborations are infinite and renowned. She co-wrote with Grammy Award winning songwriter Frank J. “I wanted to cut something that didn’t settle into a certain mold of what was expected,” says Tobi Lee. “I wanted versatility with different sounds and styles. In every way, I wanted this album to be a little bit of EVERYTHING from country, rock and even some blues.” “Money Talk$” has been a passion of love since the beginning and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!”

With more than 120 shows confirmed this year, Tobi Lee and her band, MSB will bring to the stage a high energy performance that will leave crowds craving more.

“I love to perform on stage whether it is in front of 50,000 people at the Havelock Country Jamboree in Ontario, Canada or in front of 50 people at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville,” explains Lee. “I like to make the audience feel as if they are sitting in my living room and we’re just jammin’ and taking a break from life for a little bit.”

Growing up in Indiana, Tobi Lee was born to be an entertainer. She performed in local theater with nearly 300 total performances. While hosting her own local television show, she formed her first band, “The Country Sunshine Band.” As part of a special recording project, Tobi Lee joined Gloria Gaither and The Bill Gaither Trio on the single “I’m Somebody.” which can be heard on the album “L.I.F.E.” She has opened for Lorrie Morgan, Tanya Tucker, Old Dominion, Toby Keith, Martina McBride, Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert, .38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more.

I hope to see everyone at the Nashville Palace! We are going to rock the house.” “Not only will you hear songs from “Money Talk$,” but also “Jiggle It A Little” that I wrote with Sandy Ramos (Dixie ChicksFaith Hill) and “Tell It To Me Sober” that I wrote with Chet Roberts from 3 Doors Down.

About Carrington MacDuffie:
In life and in art, Carrington MacDuffie is an adventurer. A New York native who now splits her time between Austin and Seattle – after a decade beachside in Los Angeles – she travels the globe and joyfully explores diverse universes of thought and practice. Whether making music, writing poetry, voicing works of literature, piloting a fixed-wing airplane, or savoring the Zen-like concentration of target shooting, she is led by her passion for creativity, and her endless fascination with exploring both the world outside and her inner muses.

As a singer-songwriter, Carrington first released work in 2014. Her love for music was sparked in early childhood while listening to the records that her dad, a huge music aficionado, was spinning — Teddy Wilson, Beethoven, Herb Alpert, Hudson River folk, Scottish marches, Bob Dylan, classic rock, and the Beatles, among many other artists and genres. Those far-reaching influences weave through her entire body of work, and stand out in her newest singles and her most recent LP Kiss Make Better.
