Tracey Cunningham’s Fall/Winter 2016 Haircolor Trends

“As the seasons change, so should your haircolor,” says Redken Celebrity Colorist, Tracey Cunningham. Shades of haircolor that may work well with a bronzed summer glow may no longer be your perfect hue in the cooler months when your skin tone can lighten one or two shades. To help achieve a fresh new look that will transition into fall and winter – just as your closet makes the switch, too! – Tracey uses Redken’s revolutionary color formulas to create her favorite haircolor trends for Fall/Winter 2016.

Fall/Winter 2016 Trend #1: Sophisticated Blonde

“I love an all-over creamy blonde for fall and winter. In the summer clients can keep their blonde with more roots and less highlight maintenance; however for fall and winter I love a deeper, manicured blonde with more complete color coverage. Charlize Theron is a perfect fall blonde – sophisticated and more put together than a summery beach blonde.” – Tracey Cunningham

Fall/Winter 2016 Trend #2: Rich Red

Bryce Dallas Howard does my perfect fall red – so warm and rich. A pop of chestnut in the hair creates a smoldering red that radiates its own heat as the temperatures drop. A deep red created with Shades EQ Gloss complements light or fair skin tones while adding amazing condition and shine to the hair.” – Tracey Cunningham

Fall/Winter 2016 Trend #3: Brunette Babylights

“Warm babylights give brunettes the perfect ‘pick me up’ by boosting skin tone, especially in the cooler fall and winter months. Mandy Moore’s babylights easily soften her monochromatic brunette color, but the placement and tone of the color makes her hair feel warm and seductive, not beachy.” – Tracey Cunningham

At your next salon appointment, leave the chair looking and feeling like a celebrity by asking your colorist about Tracey’s trends. To continue to protect your haircolor after your service, Tracey recommends using Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare or Blonde Idol Haircare to seal in color and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine.

Each year in a labor of love, Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist of Meche Salon in Beverly Hills, spends weeks helping Hollywood’s favorite leading ladies refresh, or transform, their locks in preparation for the Annual Academy Awards. Stars include Amy Poehler, Charlize Theron, Emma Stone, Camila Alves, Chrissy Teigen, Isla Fisher, Jennifer Flavin, Jennifer Garner, and many more.

Redken Mocha, Pumpkin Spice and Gingersnap trends bring the coffee shop to the salon

When it comes to Pumpkin Spice Lattes and mocha-flavored concoctions, there’s no such thing as too much. We continue to line up for these flavors at our coffee shop, but why stop there? Pumpkin Spice and other coffee-inspired colors are this season’s latest haircolor trend to catch on with people of all haircolors embracing the autumnal tones and pumpkin craze.

Redken has made it easier than ever to hop on the coffee-inspired bandwagon with a menu of Sombre ‘flavors’ including Iced Chai, Extra Cinnamon, So Mocha, Pumpkin Spice and Gingersnap, among others! Embrace your drink of choice from head-to-toe and ask your colorist to incorporate the new Redken Chromatics Mocha and Shades EQ Gloss shades into your next salon appointment.

“The Pumpkin Spice trend is all about multiple tones softly woven through the hair, like an expensive fabric or an exotic spice market,” says Redken Master Colorist and colorist at Cutler/Redken Salon in NYC, David Stanko. “With Pumpkin Spice, it’s easy to transition your ombre into the latest fall trend. Whether your blonde, brunette or have soft orange or yellow undertones, ask for a Redken Shades EQ Gloss to be applied scalp to ends and your old ombre look will magically pick up a Pumpkin Spice flair.”

Whether you’re a blonde or brunette, embrace the fall season’s warm tones and low-maintenance approach with Redken’s NEW Sombre, a professional color technique that blends brunette and blonde tones together to create a low-contrast “soft ombre” effect.

To help colorists achieve the fresh Sombre look, Redken has launched two new Mocha shades into Redken Chromatics. Inspired by hot chocolate, Chromatics Mocha 6M features warmer tones that perfectly complement golden skin tones and are best-suited for medium to lighter bases. Chromatics Mocha 4M provides rich, deep chocolate tones with a hint of red, and is ideal on dark and medium bases.

“Sombre is a softer, more low-maintenance version of ombre that is universally flattering on all haircolors,” says Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham. “Redken’s NEW Chromatics Mocha shades help to create a rich base color with highlights that can be toned with the NEW Shades EQ Gloss natural warm shades, creating a beautiful blended color similar to that of my client Jessica Biel.”

As muses for Redken’s Sombre campaign, model and DJ Amber Le Bon and model Ashley Moore showcase two Caramel Sombre and Mocha Sombre looks and inspire those looking to refresh their ombre look.

Award-winning Redken haircolor on the Oscar’s “best dressed” courtesy of Redken’s Tracey Cunningham

Many celebrities chose to not play it safe at last night’s 87th Academy Awards with the red carpet brimming with voluminous gowns and undercut do’s. Contributing to the bold looks of the Oscar-goers was Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist, who helped Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, and Dakota Johnson, among others, prepare for the awards. Below, Tracey shares her secrets for how she achieved her client’s looks using Redken color.

  1. Emma Stone: Tracey applied Redken Shades EQ Cream to add shine and achieve a brighter version of Emma’s red color. HUGO BOSS
Fall/Winter 2015

Hair by Guido, Redken Global Creative Director

Aside from taking Edie Campbell back to black exclusively for Hugo Boss’s Fall/Winter 2015 show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a natural, sophisticated look for the runway this season. Guido used Redken’s Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to achieve a smooth, luxurious blow out, and then pulled the hair back into a simple, modern low ponytail for an easy, effortless feeling.

“The Hugo Boss idea of a woman is very sophisticated and modern, so I created this very natural, simple, low ponytail for this season’s show. I used Redken’s Satinwear 02 to get that very luxurious, smooth blow out, and then created a clean center part and tucked the hair behind the ears and pulling back into a sleek, low ponytail at the base of the head. I left the ends of the hair a little bit natural so it doesn’t look so polished or like you’re trying to hard – it feels very easy. And then there’s Edie [Cambell], who I took back to black exclusively for the show. We just did it two days ago, and it’s suits her quite nicely. It’s quite a bold look, and it’s not for everyone, but it just fits her personality.”

Grammy hair hits a high note courtesy of Tracey Cunningham

From AC/DC kicking off the show to Madonna’s risqué performance, there was no shortage of high notes at last night’s Grammy Awards. One of the biggest surprises of the night was Beck’s “Album of the Year” win, who together with wife Marissa Ribisi, seemed as surprised as the rest of the audience when he won the award.

Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist helped Chrissy Teigen and Beck’s wife, actress Marissa Ribisi, prepare for the awards with Redken color and shares with us her secrets below.

Chrissy Teigen

  1. Chrissy Teigen: To create the ultimate combination of brightness and lift, Tracey applied Redken Flash Lift, a maximum power lightening powder, and finished with Shades EQ Gloss, an ammonia-free, no-lift formula that acts as a glaze, color refresher and color corrector, to create Chrissy’s healthy blonde look.

Marissa Ribisi

  1. Marissa Ribisi: Tracey applied Redken Chromatics, an ammonia-free permanent haircolor providing up to 100% gray coverage, to Marissa’s base. She followed with Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol High Lift Conditioning Cream Color from the Professional Haircolor Collection (coming to salons this March) to create subtle highlights for added dimension.

To continue to protect the haircolor after their service, Tracey recommends that her clients use Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare to seal in color and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine.

Tracey Cunningham’s golden highlights take the stage at the Golden Globes

At last night’s 72nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, the awards that were given out were not the only gold stealing the spotlight. No matter their natural color, A-list stars ranging from Jennifer Lopez to Chrissy Teigen to Jennifer Aniston flaunted lightened hair and discreet, golden highlights.

Tracey Cunningham, Redken Celebrity Colorist helped Amy Poehler, Kate Beckinsale and Dakota Johnson among many other stars, prepare for the awards with Redken color and shares with us her secrets below.

  1. Amy Poehler: Tracey applied Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol Blue Oil Lightening System oil lightener (coming to Redken salons this March) to achieve a customized lightened shade that adds depth and incorporates the babylights trend that mimics the sun-kissed tones that hair took on during childhood. To ensure Amy’s color would shine onstage, Tracey finished with Shades EQ Gloss, an ammonia-free, no-lift formula that acts as a glaze, color refresher and color corrector.

Amy Poehler

  1. Kate Beckinsale: To revitalize Kate’s color and achieve ultimate coverage with natural reflects, Tracey applied Redken Cover Fusion, a low ammonia, 100% coverage color cream that gives hair a rich blend of copper and gold tones while adding density and fullness. For subtle highlights and added depth that would further enhance Kate’s updo, Tracey used Redken’s NEW Blonde Idol High Lift Conditioning Cream Color from the Professional Haircolor Collection.

Kate Beckinsale

  1. Dakota Johnson: To revitalize Dakota’s rich near-violet locks, Tracey applied Redken’s NEW Shades EQ Cream with Carmin’R (launched in Redken salons this January), a new introduction to the existing Redken Color portfolio that features a revolutionary dye molecule and  provides a long-lasting red with a truer to red tone color for up to 40 shampoos*. For a healthy shine, Tracey finished with Shades EQ Gloss.

Dakota Johnson

To continue to protect the haircolor after their service, Tracey recommends that her clients use Redken Color Extend Magnetics Sulfate-Free Haircare to seal in colour and deliver maximum vibrancy and shine.

Celebrity colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top holiday hair tips

Everyone wants to look and feel their best during the holiday season, radiant hair included. Unfortunately with our social calendars filled to the brim from Thanksgiving into the New Year, it can be challenging to find the time to care for and maintain your haircolor. To help guide your haircare regimen this season, Redken Celebrity Colorist Tracey Cunningham shares her top tips for making the most of your time at the salon during the holidays.

  1. Forward thinking: I typically advise my clients to wait six to eight weeks for gray touch-ups and eight to 12 weeks for highlights. With this in mind and knowing that salons get incredibly busy around the holidays, schedule your holiday color appointment with as much advance notice as possible. If you are going in for “corrective color”, to correct color results you are unhappy with from a prior coloring experience,  be prepared for a longer visit as your colorist may need to remove old color and then recolor your hair.

  1. Show, don’t tell: If you plan to try out a new look for the holidays, whether bold or subtle, bringing photographs and examples of haircolor you love will help you and your colorist explore your color options and ensure that you both mean the same thing when you say “honey blonde” or “scarlet red.” One technique I’ve been using a lot recently is a Metallic Blur haircolor – a combination of luxe bronze and gold tones that are softened together using Redken’s new Blur technique. The end result is a natural shimmering finish that is perfect for those holiday pictures and parties!

Shades EQ NEW

  1. When in doubt, refresh: If the holidays don’t fall in-between your scheduled color appointments or you do not have the time for a full color appointment this December, ask your colorist for a Redken Shades EQ gloss treatment to enhance shine. Healthy hair is a staple regardless of the occasion or the outfit and Shades EQ is a quick service that works wonders on hair to tone color, refresh highlights, and correct uneven tone. Another great alternative is a Redken Chemistry System in-salon treatment in-between or just before a color service for noticeable long-lasting color results and improved condition. Redken Chemistry rebuilds the hair from the inside out and allows your colorist to mix and match the systems based on your specific hair type. You can simultaneously address your hair’s frizziness while locking in your color treatment with two targeted treatments in one!

B_Blonde_Idol_PTConditioner_Cool_025_bB_Blonde_Idol_PTConditioner_Warm_MAIN_001_b

  • Maintenance is key! Between your many holiday updo’s, curling irons and flatiron run-throughs, the holidays can do serious damage to your locks! That is why at-home maintenance can be just as important as salon treatments. For blondes, it is important to balance out the brass which is where Blonde Idol Custom-Tone Conditioner Violet for Cool Blondes comes in. The adjustable color-depositing daily conditioner is perfect for preserving tonality between salon visits. I recommend that my clients use it the day after they get their hair colored and increase the amount they use as time passes.

CEM-FAMILY-SHOT---HI-RES

To make your brunette shade last longer than your New Year’s resolution, I recommend sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners such as Redken Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner or Color Extend Magnetics to help shield, stabilize and secure color intensity.
