Redken is excited to announce model and boundary breaker Crystal Renn as the newest brand muse. Renn will first serve as the face of the launch of NEW! shades to Redken’s popular Chromatics Ultra Rich professional haircolor line, launching in salons April 2016. Renn joins an elite collective of Redken muses and trend creators including supermodels Lea T and Soo Joo Park, actress and model Suki Waterhouse, DJ trendsetter Amber Le Bon, and Redken Global Creative Director Guido.

 

“I was really excited when I found out I was going to work with Redken,” says Crystal Renn. “It’s a brand for a modern and confident woman, which is what I aspire to myself. Born in Miami, Florida, Renn has walked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier, Chanel, Zac Posen; and starred in campaigns for iconic fashion brands including Chanel, Barneys, Dolce & Gabbana and Jimmy Choo. Renn has worked repeatedly with notable fashion photographers like Steven Meisel and Steven Klein and appeared in editorials for Vogue, Glamour, Vogue Paris, Harper’s Bazaar, V, and many more. Passionate about writing, photography and music, Renn approaches her modeling career as another form of artistic expression and seeks to explore various outlets in which she can express herself best.

Renn’s Redken debut begins as the face of the launch of new shades to Chromatics Ultra Rich professional haircolor, featuring the same ammonia-free, fortifying formulas in an even broader range of monochromatic haircolors. Redken Artist Chiala Marvici, the mastermind behind the popular hand-pressed coloring technique in 2015, used Chromatics Ultra Rich to give Renn her rich brunette hair with incredible shine. To finish the look, Redken Global Creative Director Guido styled Renn’s hair using the new Pillow Proof Blow Dry Express Treatment Primer Cream, in salons now.

Inside his Mercer Street store in SoHo, Marc Jacobs unveiled a bold, bejeweled look – from head to toe – at his Resort 2016 Presentation. Drawing inspiration from the the ‘80s, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a cool, downtown look inspired by a Martha Grahame off duty dancer. Guido used Redken’s satinwear 02 to achieve a voluminous blow-out before working Redken’s move ability 05 lightweight defining cream-paste into the hair and raking it back into a “punky” chignon. He then finished the look with a black head wrap and a spray of Redken’s forceful 23 super-strength finishing spray before the models hit the runway.

“The look for the Marc Jacobs resort show was inspired by a Martha Grahame off duty dancer with a nod to an eighties downtown girl who would use fabric to wrap and knot her hair. I prepped the hair with Redken satinwear 02, and then blow-dried it back off the face. I then applied Redken move ability 05 cream-paste throughout the hair to give definition and an almost wet look. Next, using just my hands, I pulled the hair into a rough ponytail at the crown and wrapped the head with the fabric. The pony tail was then twisted into a rough, punky knot, leaving the ends sticking out and finished with a mist of Redken forceful 23 super-strength finishing spray.”

Create the Look:

  1. Use your hands to work a dime-size amount of Redken satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion into damp hair

Guido’s trick to achieving the luscious locks? Simply wash hair with Redken’s All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner and let the hair air dry. Then lightly bend sections of hair around a large-barreled curling iron, apply a few drops of Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine from mid-lengths to ends and finish with a mist of wind blown 05 dry finishing spray.

How to use: Emulsify stay high 18 high-hold gel to mousse in your hands until it transforms into a rich mousse. Apply section by section to damp hair, focusing on the roots. Comb through to distribute evenly, then blow-dry and style as desired.

How to use: Apply a small amount of short sculpt 19 touchable texturizing gel evenly throughout hair. Blow-dry and style as desired. To enhance texture and definition, apply another small amount of product.

The ultimate braiding product that defines braids and twists, adds grip for easy braiding and helps braids last longer. “Braids are a runway staple, but so often they slip or don’t hold well. Braid aid 03 fixes that and allows you to achieve any type of braid or twist,” says Guido.

How to use: Emulsify in your hands and work 3 – 5 pumps of braid aid 03 braid defining lotion through the mid-lengths and ends. Braid or twist as desired, securing with an elastic. Reapply throughout the day as needed.

For runway-ready silver and gold effects, this pomade is ideal for sleek styles and achieves a high-fashion metallic shimmer. “When I’m working backstage, I think of hair as a material that can be reinvented. How to use: Use your index finger to paint on metal fix 08 metallic liquid pomade in short, quick strokes. To build intensity, allow each layer to dry, and then reapply. Tip: use a small color brush to create a metallic design.

To complete the darkly romantic woman at Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2015 runway show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a soft, but strategically shaped hairstyle for each girl. Guido created the fantasy-like, fluffy texture by blow drying the hair with Redken’s new Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse, and then setting tight pin curls with Redken’s Iron Shape 11 finishing thermal spray. He then brushed out the pin curls and created a structured style suited for each girl’s face shape using Redken’s Forceful 23 super strength hairspray.

 

“The McQueen woman this season is much more romantic and soft than the more futuristic, robotic looks we’ve seen in past seasons. This romantic, melancholy idea was partly inspired by the artworks of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt.  I created this very fluffy texture, and then sculpted the hair into different shapes based on what looks best with each girl’s face shape. I used Redken’s Stay High 18 to set very tight pin curls, and then brushed them out and sprayed Redken’s Forceful 23 hairspray to hold the different shapes. The finished look really draws attention to the face and enhances each girl’s natural, individual beauty.”

Create the Look:

  1. Spray Redken Pillow Proof Blow Dry express primer all over damp hair and comb through
  2. Work a quarter-size amount of Redken Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse into hairfrom roots to ends to create volume and a base for styling
  3. Rough blow dry hair and then create a center part with fingers
  4. Mist Redken Iron Shape 11 finishing thermal spray all over hair to protect hair for heat protection and hold when curling hair
  5. In a zigzag pattern, take small sections of hair and wrap around a U-shaped pins and flat iron to create very tight pin curls; continue until all hair is wrapped in pin curls
  6. Allow pin curls to set and unpin each curl once hair has cooled
  7. Brush curls out with a boar bristle brush to add volume
  8. Gather hair from back of the ear to ear, and put pieces in a high ponytail, securing in place with an elastic
  9. Put a donut on the head and pin the shape around the donut
  10. Finish by generously spraying Redken Forceful 23 super strength hairspray all over to hold the style

Redken Global Creative Director Guido created an understated, elegant updo to enhance the richness and luxury on the runway at Hermes’s Fall/Winter 2015 runway show in Paris. Before twisting the hair into an easy French twist, Guido achieved a silky smooth blow out using Redken’s Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion, and then applied Redken’s Move Ability 05 lightweight defining cream-paste for added texture. He finished the look with a mist of Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist to play up the hair’s natural shine.

 

“The Hermes woman is always very luxurious and rich. She has this timeless, classic elegance that’s sort of reinvented or modernized each season. For this show, I created an easy, but very chic and sophisticated French twist that a real woman could wear. I used Redken’s Satinwear 02 to get a super smooth, silky blowout, and then took sections of hair and created pin curls to add some body and movement. Then, I worked a Redken’s Move Ability 05 into the hair to give it some toughness and texture before I raked it back into a simple French twist. To add just a touch of modernity, I finished the style with a spray of Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist, which gives it that beautiful, natural shine.”

  5. Emulsify a quarter-size amount of Redken Move Ability 05 lightweight defining cream-paste in hands and rake through the hair to add shine and toughness
  6. Gather hair into a French twist and secure with U-pins

To play up the stony gray palette seen on the runway at Akris’s Fall/Winter 2015 show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido custom-cut wigs into a choppy bowl shape and colored each a beautiful shade of gray using Redken’s Shades EQ. Guido then sprayed Redken’s Fashion Work 12 versatile working spray all over the hair to enhance the texture and layers of the surfer-inspired cut.

 

“The look at Akris this season is very Zen and cool, but still very luxurious and a little bit edgy. I custom cut these choppy, kind of punk-y wigs for each girl and then dyed them a few different shades of gray, so you have this very cool palette of grays on the runway. It’s a bit surfer-inspired, but still very modern with the different grays and textures, which I really enhanced with Redken’s Fashion Work 12 hairspray so you can see more of the choppy layers.”

Create the Look:

  1. Apply Redken Hardwear 16 super strong sculpting gel to dry hair from root to ends and comb through until hair is completely saturated
  2. Divide hair into two sections (top and bottom) in the back
  3. Clip the bottom section down and out of the way
  4. Using a finishing brush, start to brush the top section flat against the head, following the round of the head in one direction
  5. Repeat with each section, making sure it’s very clean and neat-looking when finished
  6. Blow dry hair until completely dry
  7. Apply Redken Control Addict 28 high hold hairspray to smooth any fly-aways
  8. Place wig on head
  9. Cut the wig into a choppy bowl-shape with short bangs
  10. Spray  Redken Fashion Work 12 versatile working spray all over the hair to enhance texture

Inspired by the simple, polished looks from the 20’s and 30’s, Redken Global Creative Director Guido achieved a style with the perfect touch of modernity and masculinity to enhance Jil Sander’s Fall/Winter 2015 show. With the help of two key Redken products: Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray and Forceful 23 super strength hairspray, Guido created a charming side-swept style that stunned on the runway.

 

“There’s always a masculine-feminine sort of feeling at Jil Sander – it’s very minimal and a little boyish, and this season there’s a little bit of inspiration from the 20’s and 30’s. I created a messy side part with my fingers, and then used two Redken products to update a very classic, simple look: Wind Blown 05 to add a little texture to the natural hair and Forceful 23 hairspray, which I sprayed in the front to give it some firmness and to hold the side-swept style. Then, I tucked the hair behind the ears and swept it over to one side, securing it with a bobby pin to add just a bit of charm.”

Redken Global Creative Director Guido added a nonchalant sexiness to Versace’s Fall/Winter 2015 show with a glamorous, modern hairstyle that was saturated in shine. By playing up each girl’s individual personality and drenching the hair in Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist, Guido achieved a natural, rock-and-roll-inspired look that made a bold statement on the runway.

 
“This season, Donatella wanted each girl to be herself, but very glamorous, modern and sexy, which is always the look here at Versace. The hair is kind of natural in a sense, but in a way it feels very rock-and-roll. The key is keeping the personality – some girls have bangs and there are different lengths and textures to bring as much personality to the runway as possible. I used a curling iron to put a little rough texture in, so some girls are a bit wavier or more texturized than others. Then I drenched the hair with Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist so it’s saturated in shine and very rich-looking to get that nighttime, urban feeling. The final look is very glamorous, but in a nonchalant way.”

Putting a twist on the classic Prada look, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a young, sophisticated updo adorned with beautiful jeweled barrettes for the Fall/Winter 2015 runway show in Milan. Recreating the look from Prada’s Men’s show, Guido used Redken’s Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse and Fashion Work 12 versatile working spray to pull the hair into a high, tight updo. Then, Guido hand-placed Prada’s bejeweled barrettes on each model for the perfect finishing touch.

 

“The look at Prada this season is really a redux of the hair that I created at the Men’s show, but this version is a little bit cleaner and very young, but in a sophisticated way. There’s always an offness to the classic beauty of Prada, and that’s the feeling that we achieved with this style. It has a slightly 50’s or 60’s kind of feeling, which is always Prada-like, but it’s still very modern and sort of futuristic. I used Redken’s Stay High 18, which is a very strong gel to mousse formula, to blow dry the hair up against the roots to pull it into this very high ponytail in the middle of the head. Then, I covered the elastic securing the ponytail with a piece of hair, and flipped the hair over into this little updo, holding it in place with the jeweled barrettes. I finished the style with Redken’s Fashion Work 12 hairspray to clean the hair up and hold the style in place. The loose ends of the ponytail give you that feeling of youngness and easiness, which adds to the modernity of the look.”

Create the Look:

  1. Apply a quarter-size amount of Redken Stay High 18 high-hold gel to mousse to damp hair and blow dry flat against the head and away from the face
  2. Gather hair into a very high, tight ponytail in the middle of the head and secure with an elastic
  3. Hide the elastic by wrapping a small section of hair from the ponytail around the band, securing with a small U-shaped pin
  4. Section by section, backcomb the ponytail near the elastic to create volume
  5. Flip the length of the ponytail to one side and secure with closed fasteners (i.e., bobby pins) and a decorative barrette
  6. Finish with a thorough spray of Redken Fashion Work 12 versatile working spray to hold the style and clean up any flyaways

To enhance the romance of Alberta Ferretti’s Fall/Winter 2015 Collection, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a simple, soft low ponytail for the runway. To achieve a silky smooth texture with natural movement, Guido blow dried the hair using Redken’s Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion, and then pulled it back into a loose ponytail for a romantic, pure feeling.

“The Alberta Ferretti woman is always very romantic and beautiful. This simple look is just that – it’s very romantic and pure without being too theatrical or overworked. I blow dried the hair using Redken’s Satinwear 02 to get a soft, smooth finish that isn’t too product-y, and then I pulled the hair back into a loose, low ponytail so it’s very baggy. I didn’t leave any pieces of hair loose around the face so that I could create that nice droop in the front and over the ears. There’s some natural movement throughout the length of the ponytail, which adds to the softness and the romance of the collection.”

“Christopher Kane always creates a specific character in his head for his shows. There are always different silhouettes and shapes with the clothes, but the hair is very formulated. It sort of holds the girls together, but they still each have their own personalities and characteristics, so you don’t have to add too much. This look is very real-life, with a natural base and a messy center part, which adds ease and softness. A hard line would have felt too considered. I applied Redken’s Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist on the crown of the head so it’s very product-y and shiny. Then, I tucked the hair behind the ears, leaving the ends loose with natural movement, and finished with Redken’s Forceful 23 hairspray to flatten it against the head. It’s very modern and un-done looking, but these two products allowed me to add a little bit of style and fashion to the overall look.”

Inspired by Ida Sitwell and other grand ladies from the 40’s and 70’s, Redken Global Creative Director Guido achieved a chic and sculptured style for the runway at Marc Jacob’s Fall/Winter 2015 show. To create the defined shape, Guido used Redken’s Guts 10 root targeted volume spray foam to get a clean, sleek blow dry before pulling the hair up into a tight top knot at the front of the head. To modernize the look, Guido left the ends of the top knot sticking out, sculpting them into the perfect shape with Redken’s Control Addict 28 high control hairspray.

 

“This season, the Marc Jacobs woman is very chic, uptown and pulled together. Marc felt that he wanted to see something that was much more considered – not an easy, breezy look. The hair is slightly 40’s and 70’s, with inspiration from grand ladies and chic women like Lady Ida Sitwell, whose looks were very thought about and pulled together – there’s no accident in their beauty. It’s really a very simple knot at the top of the head, but the key is the sculpture of the head shape, which elongates and accentuates the neck very much like a swan. I used Redken’s Guts 10 as my foundation product, which I applied throughout the hair and then blow dried the opposite direction, from the base of the head up, getting it super clean. The ponytail is right in the front of the head, and I created a simple knot with the ends sticking out, using Redken’s Control Addict 28 to get that piece that sticks which adds the modernity that’s needed to really perfect this look.”

  2. Blow dry hair straight from the base of the head upward

  4. Take a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrap around the elastic band so it doesn’t show
  5. Twist the ponytail into a tight chignon and pin with open fasteners, leaving the ends exposed
  6. Spray Redken Control Addict 28 high control hairspray all over, focusing on the ends of the chignon that are sticking out to hold the shape

“This season, the Ralph Lauren girl is easy, luxurious and beautiful with a little bit of western-prairie inspiration. She’s very easy-going. I created this very natural, rich look by parting the hair with my fingers, and letting it air dry so it has that richness to it. Then, I used the curling iron to put a little bit of bend in the hair and sprayed Wind Blown 05 all over to texturize it a little bit and emphasize that naturalness. It has that cool kind of look, but it doesn’t feel over product-y. It has ease, richness and shine with just enough body to get that feeling of luxury.”

Aside from taking Edie Campbell back to black exclusively for Hugo Boss’s Fall/Winter 2015 show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a natural, sophisticated look for the runway this season. Guido used Redken’s Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to achieve a smooth, luxurious blow out, and then pulled the hair back into a simple, modern low ponytail for an easy, effortless feeling.

 

“The Hugo Boss idea of a woman is very sophisticated and modern, so I created this very natural, simple, low ponytail for this season’s show. I used Redken’s Satinwear 02 to get that very luxurious, smooth blow out, and then created a clean center part and tucked the hair behind the ears and pulling back into a sleek, low ponytail at the base of the head. I left the ends of the hair a little bit natural so it doesn’t look so polished or like you’re trying to hard – it feels very easy. And then there’s Edie [Cambell], who I took back to black exclusively for the show. We just did it two days ago, and it’s suits her quite nicely. It’s quite a bold look, and it’s not for everyone, but it just fits her personality.”

Referencing the revolutionary, rebellious style of the Guardian Angels from the 1980’s, Redken Global Creative Director Guido achieved a style with perfectly defined texture to balance the berets seen on the runway at the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2015 show. Guido created light, messy texture by saturating the hair with Redken’s Full Frame 07 all-over volumizing mousse and then allowing the hair to air dry, to enhance each girl’s individual style.

 

“It’s all about the revolutionary, rebellious girl at Marc by Marc Jacobs today. The Guardian Angels are kind of a reference point for the look, which has a very 80’s feeling. Each girl is wearing a beret with different symbols and badges, which really makes the style. The hair is very textured, which I created by saturating the hair with Redken’s Full Frame 07 mousse, scrunching it a bit with my fingers and then just letting it air dry to get that light, messy texture with just enough definition.” Guido, Redken Global Creative Director

Create the Look:

  1. Start with dry hair
  2. Dampen hair by misting water all over using a spray bottle
  3. Create a messy center part using fingers
  4. Apply Redken Full Frame 07 all-over volumizing mousse section by section to fully saturate hair
  5. Scrunch hair with fingers and allow to air dry
  6. Finish with a mist of Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist and put on beret or hat
