A portion of Clark Avenue that runs past Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health will be renamed to Robin Leach Lane to honor the life and legacy of the veteran journalist, television personality, Las Vegas enthusiast and longtime supporter of Keep Memory Alive, the fundraising entity for the center.

A dear friend of Camille and Larry Ruvo, co-founders and chairpersons of Keep Memory Alive, Leach attended the original Keep Memory Alive fundraising dinner more than 20 years ago at Spago, helping it to evolve into the now signature Las Vegas philanthropic event, the annual Power of Love® gala.

Leach is survived by his three sons who issued a statement about the street dedication saying, “The beautiful show of community love with this everlasting memorial of Robin Leach Lane means so much to the Leach family. Robin is looking down with humility and raising a glass of champagne in appreciation of this honored dedication. He couldn’t have hand picked a finer location for his namesake lane. As a play on one of the famous Beatles’ songs, ‘Robin Leach Lane is in my ears and in my eyes and all the people that come and go stop and say hello.’ Thank you to everyone who made this special tribute possible. Much love from the Leach family.”

An avid advocate for Keep Memory Alive, Leach donated his time, talent and iconic voice to support its mission to fund the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, which offers research, care and resources for patients and their caregivers in the fight against cognitive diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, multiple system atrophy, frontotemporal dementia and related disorders, multiple sclerosis and more.

“Robin was truly one-of-a-kind and we are forever grateful for his support of Keep Memory Alive and the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health,” said Mr. Ruvo. “It is an honor to dedicate a piece of Las Vegas’ burgeoning downtown to Robin and his continuing legacy within the community and beyond.”

Notable Las Vegas residents will join Camille and Larry Ruvo, Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear for a dedication ceremony on Friday, March 15 at 4 p.m. Guests in attendance to include President and Chief Executive Officer of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts Myron Martin, as well as colleague and close friend of Leach, John Katsilometes, who will emcee the festivities. The celebration takes place the evening before the 23rd annual Power of Love® gala – an event Leach voiced for more than two decades.

“Robin Leach will always be remembered, not only for his larger than life public persona and coverage of our never-ending entertainment and dining options, but also for what he quietly did for our community,” said Mayor Goodman. “The city of Las Vegas and the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health are indebted to Robin for his fun-loving spirit and generous efforts.”

“It is appropriate that the street that connects the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and The Smith Center be named for a man who was a great supporter of both institutions,” said Martin. “We miss him dearly.”

Fremont Street Experience to Begin $32 Million Renovation of the Iconic Viva Vision Canopy in Downtown Las Vegas, Feb. 2019




Fremont Street Experience will begin its $32 million renovation of Viva Vision, the world’s largest single video screen located in historic downtown Las Vegas, February 2019. Spanning five city blocks above one of the most vibrant streets in Las Vegas, the upgraded Viva Vision canopy will illuminate the pedestrian mall with 16,433,152 pixels and 5,000 Nits, making it seven-times brighter than the existing canopy with four-times the resolution. In partnership with the City of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Conventions and Visitors Authority, renovations to the iconic, city-owned Viva Vision canopy will be completed for the unveiling on Dec. 31, 2019.

Boasting 12.5 million lights alongside a state-of-the-art, 550,000-watt, concert-quality sound system, visitors will soon enjoy dazzling, high-resolution light and sound shows 24 hours a day, seven days a week. UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Rebel Red Proclamations Made Throughout Southern Nevada

Wednesday, February 28, 2018, has been proclaimed as “Rebel Red Day,” by the Clark County Board of Commissioners and the City of Las Vegas.
Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak and Mayor of Las Vegas Carolyn Goodman presented UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois and UNLV head men’s basketball coach Marvin Menzies proclamations Tuesday in Downtown Las Vegas.
Clark County and the City of Las Vegas are encouraging Rebel fans throughout Southern Nevada to wear red on Wednesday as the UNLV men’s basketball team hosts No. 21 UNR at 8 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Governor’s Series game and Senior Night will be a RED OUT with the first 3,000 fans receiving a free red t-shirt. 
A free pregame tailgate will be held starting at 6 p.m. on the plaza outside the Thomas & Mack Center. Activities will include performances by UNLV Cheer and the Rebel Girls & Company, a Smash Brothers E-Sports Tournament, classic tailgating games, a DJ and much more. Free food and drinks will be available for students on a first-come, first-served basis, while there will be a Smokin’ Sams food truck on site with options for purchase for the public. Student-athletes from various UNLV Athletics teams will be present and the UNLV indoor track & field team that recently won the Mountain West championship will be recognized.
The UNLV campus has also declared Rebel Red Days this week in support of its men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Workforce Connections’ One-Stop Career Center, in partnership with the Las Vegas Review Journal, will hold the Nevada Day Super Hiring Event on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Boulevard Mall, 3538 Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas 89169, with the goal of placing qualified job candidates into new careers. The hiring event will open to the public at 10 a.m.

More than 70 employers such as Allegiant Travel Company, City of Las Vegas, Keolis, MGM Resorts International, Montevista Hospital, Simon Event Group, Tesla, UPS and more will have thousands of open jobs in career fields like health care, IT, manufacturing and hospitality. Employers will interview potential hires on-site during the event. There is no cost to the job seeker or employer to participate.

Communities In Schools’ evidence-based model to serve as
barometer of success in the urban corridor of Clark County School District


Communities In Schools (CIS) of Nevada has formed a unique partnership with the Clark County School District (CCSD) and the City of Las Vegas to help bring together their services, with the existing services of Las Vegas Downtown Achieves and My Brother’s Keeper, into full-service community schools. On Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016, funding was approved by the City of Las Vegas to move forward with the plan.

“This is an all-important and critical time for educating our youth in Las Vegas,” Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said. “We must come together to build programs that work for all in a meaningful and positive way.”

Four elementary schools – J.T. McWilliams, Wendell P. Williams, Matt Kelly and Hollingsworth– have been dubbed “ReInvent Schools” and are the focus of this model where students, their families and the community can best be served by the wraparound services provided by these community organizations. Launched at the start of the 2016-17 school year, the initiative will focus on academic achievement, expanded learning, wraparound services and family and community engagement, with a plan to scale the model into additional underperforming urban core schools.

“We pride ourselves not only on the work that we do for the vulnerable student population here in Clark County, but the benefit our students’ success has on our community,” said Cheri Ward, executive director of CIS of Southern Nevada. “The impact that a student who feels empowered to stay in school and achieve in the classroom can have on his or her community is a powerful thing.”

CIS of Nevada provides wraparound services for nearly 60,000 students statewide and 47,800 students in Clark County alone. Recognizing that dropout prevention begins in early education, CIS of Southern Nevada currently operates in 34 elementary schools. They are also in five middle schools and eight high schools. From tutoring and class work assistance, to weekend nutrition and hygiene resources, CIS of Nevada focuses on individualized solutions to mitigate the effects of poverty that hinder a student’s ability to succeed on their path to graduation.

“The Clark County School District is so grateful to work with community partners, as it takes the assistance and dedication of all to build success,” said CCSD Chief Student Achievement Officer Dr. Mike Barton.

My Brother’s Keeper takes a collective impact approach to changing community conditions and empowering youth of color, with an emphasis on African-American boys. An initiative brought forward by President Barack Obama, Las Vegas adopted the My Brother’s Keeper Community Challenge on Nov. 10, 2014, with Mayor Carolyn Goodman leading the charge.

Las Vegas Downtown Achieves seeks to improve conditions for students through collective community action so that all students are able to reach their full potential.

CIS of Nevada has been serving Nevada as the state affiliate of the nation’s leading and most effective dropout prevention and intervention program for more than 12 years. News of the CCSD graduation rate reaching 74.2 percent – in a year that saw its largest graduating class of 17,491 students – demonstrates great progress and is evidence of the value of early intervention services for the most at-risk students of Clark County. Many students attend schools with similar economic barriers to those at the newly-approved ReInvent Schools.

The CCSD graduation rate is up 2.1 percent from 2015 and a full 4.3 percent from the 70.9 percent rate in 2014. The graduation rate for students provided with wraparound support services from CIS of Nevada has remained steadily between 83 and 87 percent during that same time period. CIS of Nevada’s evidence-based model continues to be used as a prototype for districts across the nation implementing integrated student services as a means to bolster their own educational outcomes.

 In honor of Motley Brews’ Great Vegas Festival of Beer’s fifth anniversary, the City of Las Vegas has declared Saturday, April 11 as Motley Brews Craft Beer Day.


“Having the day named after us is a great way to celebrate these past five years and how craft beer culture has grown in leaps and bounds over that time,” said Brian Chapin, founder of Motley Brews. “The craft beer community, culinary masterminds and local businesses have been incredibly supportive since we hosted our first festival in 2011, and we owe a lot of our success to them.”


The 2015 Great Vegas Festival of Beer, Nevada’s largest craft beer festival, will celebrate this milestone throughout the streets of Downtown Las Vegas on Saturday, April 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will host over 6,000 beer enthusiasts, 400 brews from more than 100 breweries, live music, beer-infused culinary treats, life-size pub games, a silent disco and more.


Tickets are on sale and priced at $40 for General Admission and $50 for Early Entry, available online until the day of the festival. Mob Museum Adds Audio Tours in Four New Languages

]For the first time,  The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, will make audio tours available to its visitors. Recorded in English, Spanish, Mandarin and Portuguese, the tours will enable the Museum to speak to a wider audience, including the growing number of international visitors that travel to Las Vegas each year.

“We have always planned to add audio tours and a grant from the City of Las Vegas’ Centennial Commission made doing so possible,” explained Geoff Schumacher, director of content, The Mob Museum. “Being able to reach a growing number of non-English-speaking international visitors makes sense, especially given the fact all signs point to an increasing number of foreign travelers coming to Las Vegas each year.”

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority projects growing overall international visitation to the destination to amount to 30 percent of total visitors in the coming years. Currently, it operates 14 international offices, including those in the fast-emerging markets of China and Brazil. In 2013, international visitors comprised 20 percent of the destination’s nearly 40 million visitors. Since opening in 2012, the Museum has welcomed visitors from 35 countries around the world.

Goodwill of Southern Nevada, in collaboration with the City of Las Vegas, will hold a hiring event at the East Las Vegas Community Center, located at 250 N. Eastern Ave. on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 where veterans will receive VIP entrance into the event.  

This pre-Veterans Day hiring event is an extension of Goodwill of Southern Nevada’s Veteran Integration Program, or VIP.  Since its inception in 2012, Goodwill’s VIP has helped nearly 500 veterans and immediate family members secure employment in Southern Nevada. 

Although veterans posses many valuable employment skills such as leadership, teamwork, self-discipline and a great work ethic, many returning service members have trouble translating their military experience into civilian terms and face other employment difficulties.  Nevada consistently ranks among the top states when it comes to veterans who are unemployed. 

Each of the 60+ employers attending the hiring event have open job positions they are currently hiring for.  Job seekers should bring a photo ID, DD214 (or other proof of service) and current resume.

Expecting to attract tens of thousands of people over the expanded three-day event, Life is Beautiful will be hosted in a similar layout to its inaugural festival last year. With the cooperation of The City of Las Vegas and Downtown Project, the Life is Beautiful perimeter will create an “L-shape” footprint incorporating street blocks from Las Vegas Boulevard to 10th Street, and Carson Avenue to Mesquite Ave. More than 25 businesses within the footprint, comprising of many new operations that have opened to the public since last year’s festival such as the Container Park, will be programmed with events and activations.

Life is Beautiful Festival unveils another pillar for its 2014 culture festival taking place Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26. The art program is designed to create a live urban gallery that is seamlessly integrated into the festival footprint by employing several mediums of visual art from large-scale murals and instalments to interactive art centers and immersive galleries.

“The art program is as integral to the overall festival experience as any other aspect at Life is Beautiful,” said festival founder Rehan Choudhry, “ Our goal is to change individual’s everyday relationship with art by inspiring creativity and challenging perspectives, especially amongst those who normally wouldn’t consider themselves art enthusiasts.”

The festival’s art program is comprised of two separate initiatives, each bringing artists out of their traditional studios and galleries and into the streets of Downtown Las Vegas. The art program will be expanding in 2014 to also take over the Western Hotel to create a completely captivating space that will utilize all of the senses to offer a unique and engaging experience for festival goers.


Street Art

Evident by last year’s successful program and the many murals that still exist on the streets of downtown today, the urban surroundings of the Life is Beautiful Festival provide a perfect backdrop for the eclectic and semi-permanent street art program featuring some of the biggest names in the international street art scene. Curated by Charlotte Dutoit (Justkids), the street art program will transform the festival landscape into a magical art-inspired playground to give people a playful and unexpected escape into art.


Contributing artists include:

Borondo (Spain) – Borondo is a rising Spanish urban artist, currently living in London, heralded for his classical painting techniques. Since his formal studies, Borondo has painted large-scale street art in the USA, Brazil, Turkey and across Europe. He quickly became London’s most talked about artist.

CYRCLE. (U.S) – This collective of street artists, graphic designers and traditional fine artists  from Los Angeles has been developing their own language for the past few years. In that brief time, CYRCLE. has made a massive impact on the street and gallery scene, quickly gaining the respect of the international art community. Their aesthetic combines Classic Romanticism with alchemic symbolism, introducing it to the contemporary world through street campaigns, gallery work, and collaborations.

D*Face (UK) – After participating in the 2013 festival, D*Face is involved once again in this year’s street art program.  Considered one of most prolific contemporary urban artists of his generation, he has been a leading figure in urban art for well over a decade. A  contemporary  of  Banksy,  he  was  at  the  forefront  of  the  urban  art  movement, and  has  had  a  constant  presence  throughout  its  meteoric  rise  into  popular culture.

Misaki Kawai (Japan) – Japanese Brooklyn bases artist, works with painting, drawing, sculpture, installations and books. Her works are filled with colorful characters, who appear to come from the dream world of film, music and comics. Strongly influenced by today’s consumer society – of which she herself is a part – Kawai fuses East with West, humour with seriousness and dreams with reality. In 2014 she was oart of the show “This is not a toy” co-curated by Pharrel Williams along Takashi Murakami and Kaws.

Li – Hill (Canada) – He incorporates found objects and unconventional materials to structure complex multi-layered pieces that are as aesthetic as they are thought provoking. He has had works shown in such national institutions as the National Gallery of Victoria, The Art Gallery of Ontario and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Fintan Magee (Australia) – Moving away from the traditional graffiti in recent years, the Australian artist has started to explore new ideas and imagery within his painting. In the last three years he has created  some  of  the  largest  and  most  interesting  street  pieces around the world.

Maser (Ireland) – Maser first started painting graffiti in Ireland in 1995 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most innovative artists working in the field. Alongside  his  paintings  in  the public  realm,  Maser  also  produces  works  on  canvas,  video  and 3D  installations.

ROA (Belgium) – Renowned for his unique portrayal of large scale urban wildlife, disquietly cohabiting city streets, hand painted in his distinctive black and white style. ROA has become famous from painting animals on derelict buildings, shutters & walls literally all over the world. He has also exhibited to much acclaim internationally and was also included in the MOCA exhibition ‘Art In The Streets’ in LA.

Edoardo Tresoldi (Italy) – Scenographer and sculptor Edoardo Tresoldi, creates amazing hand-made sculpture from metallic wire mesh, transforming a mundane industrial material into delicately crafted three-dimensional figures. His participation for the Life Is Beautiful Festival will be the first appearance of Edoardo Tresoldi’s work in the United States


In addition to the street art, a first-class gallery art program curated by Patrick Duffy, President of the Las Vegas Art Museum, past executive board member for The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and Chairman of the UNLV Fine Art Galleries will also be presented at the festival. His program is set to take over the Western Hotel and will center on the visual manifestations of a selection of universal concepts and ideas including love, equality and family. Each transformed space will immerse attendees in the artist’s world through utilizing a multitude of senses beyond just the visual component. Duffy’s curation will include installments and collaborations from artists including: Audrey Barcio, Camilla Quinn, Eric Tillinghast, Gina Quaranto, Jerry M Misko II, Jesse Smigel, Jevijoe Vitug, JK Russ and Trifecta Gallery. Together with works by students from the Las Vegas Academy, Linda Alterwitz, Matthew Couper, Miguel Rodriquez, VAST Space ProjectsZak Ostrowski. and Aaron Sheppard.

In addition to both the local and international artists that will be participating in the 2014 art program, Life is Beautiful is proud to help facilitate collaborations between artists to create one of a kind works for the festival including an original mural design from Tim Bavington, best known for his brightly colored sculpture outside The Smith Center of Performing Arts and Sush Machida, contemporary Japanese artist whose work can be seen throughout Las Vegas.

The Las Vegas Shakespeare Company (LVSC) today announced the kick off to its Capital campaign funding the renovation of the historic Reed Whipple Cultural Center.   The 35,000 square foot center will be expanded to house a state of the art 499-seat theatre and rehearsal space as well as the Bard Lounge, Gallery OV – Opportunity Village Fine Art gallery and the return of Chef Mike Jordan to Las Vegas with Rosemary’s Café, a re-imagined twist on their storied Las Vegas restaurant.

“It was one year ago today that the City of Las Vegas entrusted us with this beautiful building, the Reed Whipple Center, and along with that trust they also gave us a mandate to bring a first-class professional theatre to our region,” says Dan Decker, Artistic Director for the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company.  “This expansion allows us to create a multi-faceted cultural gem, anchored by Nevada’s first permanent, professional theater company, and become a model for contemporary resident theaters across the country.”

The Las Vegas Shakespeare Company won a lease for the Reed Whipple building by a unanimous vote of the Las Vegas City Council on September 7, 2011, as its first step in becoming Nevada’s first member of the League of Resident Theatres, (LORT), a theater industry organization of non-profit professional theater production companies which adhere to strict financial standards and utilize all professional union actors, directors, choreographers and designers.   As the building is transformed into a full-functioning performance space LVSC will become the state’s very first professional resident LORT theatre company.

“When we leased Reed Whipple to LVSC, we knew they were a perfect fit for our vision of downtown,” says Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman.  “Having Nevada’s very first permanent professional theater company residing in the heart of our city is a true coup for downtown and is a great step forward as we grow into a city which embraces and fosters the cultural arts.”

LVSC has been producing and performing world-class theatre plays and musicals since 2008, owing its early success to direct support from the Southern Nevada community.   With an aim to produce full theatrical seasons in the new space by early 2014, LVSC will continue bringing the Bard to high school students across Clark County through its Shakespeare in Schools program and staging the beloved Shakespeare-In-The-Park and spring children’s musical for the City of Henderson.

“LVSC has always been a wonderful partner with the City of Henderson in bringing great quality entertainment to our community,” says Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen. “We know that with this expansion and a permanent home will mean more fantastic productions, not just inside the new theatre, but beyond as we will continue to work together on initiatives including Shakespeare in the Park and the spring musical at the Henderson Pavilion.”

LVSC is embarking on a Capital Fund Drive to complete funding for the $45 million project, which has been conceptualized and designed by Gensler Architects to create a modern, technologically distinct playhouse and community focal point while paying homage to the Whipple Center’s distinctive 1960’s mid-mod architecture.  LVSC aims to raise $15 million and break ground in early 2013.   In addition to a world-class theatre, the expansion will also include amenities designed to make the center a cultural centerpiece in the downtown corridor.

“The LVSC is contributing to a real downtown renaissance, and this expansion will not just give us amazing live theatre from Shakespeare to musicals and beyond, it will also become a hub of activity and excitement year-round,” says Las Vegas City Councilman Ricki Y. Barlow.

Included in the complex is the Bard Lounge, a chic spot for pre- and post-show cocktails and Gallery OV, Opportunity Village Fine Art, a retail art gallery featuring works created by the non-profit’s clients.    One of the jewels of the complex is the return of celebrated Chef Mike Jordan, known for Las Vegas’ beloved fine dining restaurant, Rosemary’s.   In partnership with the LVSC, Mike Jordan is reimagining his storied restaurant as Rosemary’s Café, an upscale eatery and bar including terrace dining, which will capture the beauty of the mountain vistas of the Valley region.

“I couldn’t be happier to be working with the Las Vegas Shakespeare Company to bring a taste of Rosemary’s back to the city that embraced us so much,” says Chef Mike Jordan.   “We look forward to bringing back some old favorites and creating new ones.”

The Las Vegas Shakespeare Company hopes to break ground on the campus early next year with an aim to present its first season of Shakespeare, classic plays, musicals, children’s theatre and world premiere productions in early 2014.

Details: Volunteers will help renovate the historic Las Vegas Academy by cleaning, painting and gardening in the school’s courtyard as well as installing a piece of public art created by Miguel Rodriguez.

The Las Vegas Academy renovations will be the second project for Downtown Cares, a grassroots effort to uplift historic downtown Las Vegas by organizing area residents, businesses and visitors for neighborhood service days. The event is sponsored by, Repurpose America, Downtown Las Vegas Alliance and the City of Las Vegas, and project organizers are currently collecting donations and gathering volunteers. Green Space Provides New Venue for Community

The City of Las Vegas approved the ownership transfer of a 1.7 acre green space in the 61-acre Symphony Park development in downtown Las Vegas to The Smith Center for the Performing Arts during its Oct, 19, 2011, city council meeting.  The park will be formally named Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park. In the same meeting, design plans for the highly anticipated space were also approved. The park, which will complete The Smith Center campus, will be located on the east side of Symphony Park Avenue, between Promenade Place and City Parkway.


The Smith Center will own and operate the park and will be responsible for developing programs for the outdoor space. The park will open to the public alongside the rest of the 5-acre cultural complex in a week-long opening celebration that will begin on March 10, 2012. Construction for the park is already underway.


“Whether it’s the green space, family activities, social interactions, public art or the sense of community identity such a space provides, great parks bring excitement to a community,” said The Smith Center President and CEO Myron Martin. “With the addition of the Donald W. Reynolds Symphony Park to our campus, we are able to present the arts to the public on a larger scale and turn downtown into the arts center of Southern Nevada.”


Martin added that the park is designed to become a multi-functional neighborhood gathering place, while also acting as a venue that can host concerts, festivals, community and private events. He also noted that, although the park is privately owned, it will be accessible to the public.


Design elements will include a custom art piece, created by Tim Bavington, which will serve as a backdrop to an elevated stage, strings of Tivoli lights spanning across the park to create a festive feeling during events, and additional commissioned art pieces peppered throughout the green space. Construction costs for the project are estimated at $10 million.


“The city commends The Smith Center and Reynolds Foundation in its leadership, ability and desire to take on this project and create a classic cultural center that our entire community will soon enjoy,” said Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman. 


Lifescapes International, Inc. is the landscape architect and designer of record for the park. The company is known for some of Southern Nevada and California’s exceptional landscape designs, including The Mirage in Las Vegas, to California’s Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Hills, The Lakes Country Club and The Grove.

About The Smith Center for the Performing Arts
The Smith Center for the Performing Arts is a public/private partnership that will become the centerpiece of cultural life in Las Vegas, offering a blend of performances by resident companies, as well as first-run touring attractions. The 5-acre cultural campus will feature three performance spaces, the 2,050-seat main performance area in Reynolds Hall and Boman Pavilion’s 258-seat Cabaret Jazz and 250-seat Studio Theater and will also be home to a 1.7 acre park, which can be used for outdoor concerts.
