WHAT:
The Las Vegas Aviators’ mascots, Spruce and Aviator, flew 1,121 feet over The LINQ Promenade on the FLY LINQ, Las Vegas Strip’s only zipline. 

FLY LINQ is the only zipline in the world to offer riders four ways to fly that launch guests on 10 side-by-side lines simultaneously. The zipline is open daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

The mascots represent Las Vegas Aviators who are the city’s first minor league baseball team.

SMOKED BURGERS & BBQ’S PATIO IS NOW OPEN ON THE LAS VEGAS STRIP

 

A cool breeze and the subtle scent of BBQ is in the air on the newly-opened patio located in the epicenter of the Las Vegas Strip at Smoked Burgers & BBQ at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. The thousands of locals and visitors who pass by each day are invited to enjoy the sunshine while sipping ice cold beers and chowing down on finger-licking favorites.

Smoked Burgers & BBQ’s patio is located directly on Las Vegas Boulevard and can seat 40 guests at 16 tables that wrap around the iconic Trevi Fountain. The al fresco dining area includes a full bar as well as an outdoor satellite bar located right on the sidewalk serving up cold beers to passersby. The 1500 square foot patio features two large-screen TVs.

“The patio is the heart of this restaurant and the perfect place to spend an afternoon eating and drinking on the Strip. Neon Museum Restores Silver Slipper Sign Paint Color to Original Silver, Gold, Blue

ORIGINAL SILVER, GOLD, BLUE

The Silver Slipper, one of the Neon Museum’s most iconic signs installed in the median on Las Vegas Boulevard North, has been restored to its original color combination as the result of a recent repainting.

Long familiar to passersby for its metallic, bulb-studded upper and bright-red sole and insole, the Silver Slipper was, in fact, painted silver, gold and blue when it first appeared on the building of its famed casino in the mid-1950s. It remained that way into the early 60s. Today, travelers along the stretch of road between Sahara Avenue and Washington Avenue, which is a designated National Scenic Byway, will see those original colors once again.

“The City of Las Vegas is in the process of touching up paint and repairing lighting fixtures on each of our signs on the National Scenic Byway,” explains Tracey Sprague, collections manager, Neon Museum. “While the Silver Slipper was indeed painted silver, gold and red during the latter part of its tenure at the casino, returning it to its original hue gives a chance to celebrate the earlier part of its history.”

The blue color selected by the museum team for the new paint scheme was chosen following a color match with photographs of the sign from the 50s into the early 60s.

One of nine restored and operational signs included in the Neon Museum’s Las Vegas Signs Project, the Silver Slipper sits just west of the Neon Museum Boneyard and is frequently photographed by museum visitors; it appears particularly attractive at dusk against the backdrop of the desert sunset. Other signs in the Las Vegas Signs Project showcased on the National Scenic Byway include the Caballero from the Hacienda Hotel and Casino at Fremont Street, Bow & Arrow Motel and Binion’s Horseshoe near the La Concha Visitors’ Center at the McWilliams Avenue intersection and Society Cleaners, the Lucky Cuss Motel and the Normandie Motel at the Ogden Street intersection. Additionally, the Las Vegas Signs Project includes the 5th Street Liquor sign at Garces Street and Casino Center Boulevard and the Landmark Hotel sign, installed on Paradise Road near the site of the imploded casino.

After much anticipation, Drybar will open shop in Las Vegas in the Miracle Mile Shops Friday, July 1. Drybar’s refreshingly simple concept: “No cuts. No color. The 2,797 square foot Las Vegas shop is the brand’s largest footprint to date, with 20 styling chairs and features all of the signature elements that define the unique Drybar experience. However, exclusive for Las Vegas, the flagship shop has a full cocktail bar, built-in photo booth and live DJ, as well as an Event Manager to host and plan parties for all occasions. THE NEON MUSEUM WELCOMES, PLUGS IN
THE RIVIERA HOTEL & CASINO SIGN

WHAT:
Illuminating for the first time since the property closed on May 4, the Neon Museum officially lit the Riviera Hotel & Casino sign. The Riviera joins a small group of restored signs in the Neon Boneyard that are able to be illuminated. The sign is located just above the iconic Stardust sign. Young Electric Sign Company (YESCO) generously updated the sign by donating a new electrical system and bulbs.

ABOUT THE SIGN:
The Riviera opened on the northern part of the Strip in 1955 during a precarious time; this was when there was doubt the Las Vegas casino boom would last due to casinos opening in quick succession. The “Riv” was the first high-rise hotel on Las Vegas Boulevard. Its elegant design set it apart from many of the other resorts that often resembled the motor courts that were popular with travelers. The resort was a successful entertainment spot. Liberace played on opening night and headlined for many years. Dean Martin performed and even owned a stake in the business. The Riviera also played host to a variety of billiards tournaments including the American Poolplayers Association held every year at the resort for more than 20 years, including the week before the Riviera closed in May 2015. Several pieces of the graceful signage were donated to the museum, including this piece that originally adorned the Riviera’s East Side porte-cochère.

Las Vegas craft beer fanatics can experience a never-before-tasted seasonal from Sin City Brewing Co. as the local brewery debuts its first-ever Maibock draft May 5. The Maibock is the latest brew of a series of high-alcohol seasonals Sin City plans to unveil this year and will be available at its locations on Las Vegas Boulevard at Harmon Corner and Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian.

 

“I’ve noticed that nowadays when people order seasonal beers, they want that extra oomph! Our Maibock is like an amber lager on steroids,” said Sin City’s Master Brewer Rich Johnson. “It is strong, but not hoppy at all. So guests will enjoy a very smooth, malty and balanced beer that packs a punch.”

 

Sin City’s Maibock is 7.2 percent ABV, 25 IBU, and boasts a beautiful amber hue. Bock beers are stronger versions of classic German lagers, usually brewed for the separate seasons, “Mai” meaning the month of May in German. The Maibock was historically used as a source of nutrition for Bavarian monks during times of fasting. Sin City’s Maibock will be available on tap through June.

Once again converting a sprawling city landscape into festival grounds, Life is Beautiful reveals the 15 city blocks it will secure and incorporate into its music, food, art and learning event on October 24-26, 2014 in Downtown Las Vegas.

 

“Every year the footprint of Life is Beautiful will be completely unique because instead of working with a blank canvas like a park or open areas that can be fenced, we take over an ever-evolving urban landscape with preexisting buildings, roads and infrastructure,” said festival founder Rehan Choudhry, “We have the opportunity to incorporate and really highlight the distinctive aspects of a growing Downtown Las Vegas.”

 

Expecting to attract tens of thousands of people over the expanded three-day event, Life is Beautiful will be hosted in a similar layout to its inaugural festival last year. Richest Tournament in Outdoor History will award over $50,000 in prize money

Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower joins World Outdoor Racquetball, World Players of Handball and the National Paddleball Association to bring the richest tournament in outdoor racquet sports to the Las Vegas Strip. Players and fans of racquetball, handball and paddleball can get their fill during this four-day tournament featuring free viewing of the top ranked professionals, from around the globe, competing in a multitude of exciting divisions. Amateur men, women and junior players will also battle it out for world titles in their respective classes. ABOUT: The Chinese New Year celebration will begin with the “Dotting of the Eyes” ceremony at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas’ East Side / Las Vegas Boulevard entrance.  During the ceremony, around 40 performers will “awaken” the dragon and lions by dotting their eyes with red paint.  Once underway, the parade will twist and weave throughout the casino floor.  The moving celebration will make a stop at the High Limit loungefor a “Collecting of the Cabbage” ceremony.  Special décor honoring the holiday will also be visible on property from Feb. 5 – 17.

Fremont Street Experience revealed plans to build a new permanent zipline attraction, SlotZilla, Tuesday during a press conference at which a 6-foot model of the attraction was unveiled. The $11 million attraction will forever alter the downtown Las Vegas skyline with an 11-story slot-machine-themed takeoff platform located near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Fremont Street.

Construction on SlotZilla is expected to begin immediately after New Year’s with the attraction anticipated to open during the first half of 2013. SlotZilla will be a major new icon for downtown Las Vegas and Fremont Street Experience, a five-block entertainment district that attracts nearly 16 million annual visitors.

“We wanted to take a ride typically found in the jungle, give it amusement park features and qualities, and build it in the middle of downtown,” said Jeff Victor, president of Fremont Street Experience. “Designing a zipline to go across 1,700 feet with only a slight incline was a real challenge and required us to think outside the canopy and develop new technologies. To meet this challenge, we designed a first-of-its kind propulsion launch system and created a steeper incline that will actually take riders through the Viva Vision canopy, giving them the thrill of their lives.”

SlotZilla will be a two-level thrill ride. Riders on the upper Zoomline will take off over 100 feet above ground and riders, lying flat in a harness, will be launched to a speed that will zoom them 1,700 feet through and under the Fremont Street Experience canopy. Riders on the lower Zipline take off about 70 feet above ground and zip 850 feet to a mid-point landing platform. Both levels deliver a ride experience unique in the world – flying above thousands of people on Fremont Street Experience and under the Viva Vision canopy, which is the world’s largest video screen.

SlotZilla, specially designed for Fremont Street Experience by Skyline based in Hawaii, features a first-of-its-kind propulsion launch system which propels the rider from the platform at speeds of 35 mph, as well as a proprietary braking system, giving riders a smooth landing to the ride. SlotZilla combines innovative technology with a dynamic themed concept to transcend a traditional zipline ride into a ground-breaking attraction for the amusement industry.

“The launched zipline will provide an incredible experience for riders and is a first for the zipline industry,” said Danny Boren, president of Skyline. “Additionally, this attraction will have increased guest capacity as a result of the integrated ride controls and automated safety features, which are exciting new developments for the zipline industry.”

The new zipline attraction is named “SlotZilla” as a tribute to the deep gaming roots of downtown Las Vegas. Through the creative direction of Contour Entertainment, the 120-foot-high takeoff tower will be transformed into the World’s Largest Slot Machine. Riders will actually “be the jackpot” and exit the slot machine through the pay table and coin tray. Las Vegas visitors will not want to miss this iconic new attraction, a thrilling experience for zipline riders and a one-of-a-kind photo op for those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground.

The takeoff platform is a multi-level, 11-story structure designed to look like a giant slot machine, complete with a pull-arm and reels. Each time riders leave the Zoomline platform, the arm will pull down, the reels will “spin” and a beacon will light up. The slot machine is adorned with two Vegas showgirls standing 37 feet tall and will include a 20-foot wide, 10-foot tall “Welcome to Fabulous Downtown Las Vegas” sign, providing a photo op for tourists.

The ride will have two landing platforms. Zipline riders will land on a platform near the intersection at 3rd Street and Casino Center. Zoomline riders will land on a platform located on top of a new Main Street Stage.

Temporary Ride to Close:
In order to build this amazing ride, the current temporary zipline Flightlinez is closed for a short time. This will enable Flightlinez to move the current temporary platforms so that the ride can remain open during construction of the permanent SlotZilla structure.

SlotZilla Opening & Ticket Sales:
SlotZilla is scheduled to open in June 2013 and Fremont Street Experience anticipates hiring approximately 100 new employees to operate the new permanent ride.

Ticket sales are projected to be $20 for the Zipline, $30 for the Zoomline or $40 for both. For those who want to avoid the lines and book a time window for their ride, advanced ticket sales and reservations will be made available.
