THE MOB MUSEUM, EL CORTEZ HOTEL & CASINO COLLABORATE TO CREATE “VINTAGE VEGAS EXPERIENCE” – A DELUXE DOWNTOWN
LAS VEGAS GETAWAY

The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement and the El Cortez Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas’ longest continuously operating hotel-casino, announce an exclusive package to offer Las Vegas enthusiasts an epic “Vintage Vegas Experience.” This first-ever collaboration pairs VIP access to The Mob Museum with two unparalleled nights in the Jackie Gaughan Suite at the historic El Cortez Hotel & Casino.

“The Mob Museum’s exhibits provide unexpected insights into Mob history with a focus of the evolution of Las Vegas—and the El Cortez has stood witness to much of that evolution,” said Jonathan Ullman, president and chief executive officer, The Mob Museum. “For guests fascinated by the city’s past, this distinctive, Downtown Las Vegas getaway will surely be appealing.”

Guests will enjoy two nights’ accommodation in the immaculately preserved suite, which was the home of the late casino magnate Jackie Gaughan beginning in 1980. A bookmaker from Nebraska, Gaughan had relocated to Las Vegas in 1950 and bought a stake in the Flamingo. At that time, being in the casino business meant regular contact with the city’s organized crime figures. In fact, with the purchase of the El Cortez in 1963, Gaughan “inherited” aging mobster Irish Green because former El Cortez owner Bugsy Siegel had promised to house him at the hotel for life.

Following Gaughan’s passing in 2014, the hotel’s current owners, the Epstein family, opted to honor his legacy by maintaining the suite’s original 1980s style, which Gaughan’s wife Bertie designed. Original décor includes pink upholstered walls and floors, brass built-ins, hand-carved wooden double doors with brass door pulls in the shape of “J” and “G” and a pink marbled tub with gold swan features. Situated on the 15th floor, the suite encompasses 2,700 square feet, two bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, one romper room, a full kitchen and a spacious living and dining area. Guests will also receive a $150 food and beverage credit and elevated dining experience at Siegel’s 1941. Named after former-owner and notorious gangster, Bugsy Siegel, the restaurant offers extensive menus filled with modern twists on classic American standards.

At The Mob Museum, guests will receive two Premier Passes, including general Museum admission plus access into the Firearm Training Simulator and the Crime Lab and a guided tour with Geoff Schumacher, senior director of content. Plus, guests will enjoy an immersive Prohibition history experience in the Museum’s Underground. Here, they will discover the intriguing stories behind Prohibition in America and how it led to the proliferation of organized crime—which played an undeniable role in the development of Las Vegas later in the 20th century. Guests will explore exhibits and authentic artifacts, as well as enjoy two hours in the exclusive, hidden Fitting Room VIP area with $100 food and beverage credit, plus a private, guided distillery tour and moonshine tasting with a Museum distillery staff member. The in-house distilled moonshine is as smooth as it can get, made with 100 percent corn and bottled at 50 percent ABV.

“This amazing VIP package represents the evolution of a successful long-term partnership between El Cortez and The Mob Museum,” said Adam Wiesberg, Assistant General Manager of the El Cortez. “Both organizations cherish and preserve the rich history of this great city so we couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

The full package is designed for two guests with a maximum of up to four guests; components follow:

  • Two nights in El Cortez Hotel & Casino’s Jackie Gaughan Suite
  • $150 food and beverage credit at Siegel’s 1941 restaurant
  • Two Premier Passes at The Mob Museum, including access into the Firearm Training Simulator and the Crime Lab
  • Private, guided tour with Museum’s resident historian
  • Two hours in The Underground’s VIP room
  • $100 food and beverage credit in The Underground
  • Private, guided distillery tour and moonshine tasting with a Museum distillery staff

This package starts at $2,550 and will be available through Dec. 31, 2019. For more information, go to https://themobmuseum.org/vintage-vegas-experience/ or call (702) 724-8631.

Life is Beautiful Festival Unveils Footprint for its Sophomore Year in Downtown Las Vegas

Music, Food, Art and Learning Event Combines Festival Environment with City Streets

Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26

Tickets on sale now at lifeisbeautiful.com

Once again converting a sprawling city landscape into festival grounds, Life is Beautiful reveals the 15 city blocks it will secure and incorporate into its music, food, art and learning event on October 24-26, 2014 in Downtown Las Vegas.

“Every year the footprint of Life is Beautiful will be completely unique because instead of working with a blank canvas like a park or open areas that can be fenced, we take over an ever-evolving urban landscape with preexisting buildings, roads and infrastructure,” said festival founder Rehan Choudhry, “We have the opportunity to incorporate and really highlight the distinctive aspects of a growing Downtown Las Vegas.”

Expecting to attract tens of thousands of people over the expanded three-day event, Life is Beautiful will be hosted in a similar layout to its inaugural festival last year. With the cooperation of The City of Las Vegas and Downtown Project, the Life is Beautiful perimeter will create an “L-shape” footprint incorporating street blocks from Las Vegas Boulevard to 10th Street, and Carson Avenue to Mesquite Ave. More than 25 businesses within the footprint, comprising of many new operations that have opened to the public since last year’s festival such as the Container Park, will be programmed with events and activations.

“We owe much of the success of last year’s festival to the support of the city officials and inclusive businesses and look forward to the same great relationships this year,” continues Choudhry. “In no other place in the world would we be able to put on this type of festival, and for that we are continually grateful.”

Tickets On Sale Now at lifeisbeautiful.com

Life is Beautiful Festival unveils another pillar for its 2014 culture festival taking place Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26. The art program is designed to create a live urban gallery that is seamlessly integrated into the festival footprint by employing several mediums of visual art from large-scale murals and instalments to interactive art centers and immersive galleries.

“The art program is as integral to the overall festival experience as any other aspect at Life is Beautiful,” said festival founder Rehan Choudhry, “ Our goal is to change individual’s everyday relationship with art by inspiring creativity and challenging perspectives, especially amongst those who normally wouldn’t consider themselves art enthusiasts.”

The festival’s art program is comprised of two separate initiatives, each bringing artists out of their traditional studios and galleries and into the streets of Downtown Las Vegas. The art program will be expanding in 2014 to also take over the Western Hotel to create a completely captivating space that will utilize all of the senses to offer a unique and engaging experience for festival goers.

Street Art

Evident by last year’s successful program and the many murals that still exist on the streets of downtown today, the urban surroundings of the Life is Beautiful Festival provide a perfect backdrop for the eclectic and semi-permanent street art program featuring some of the biggest names in the international street art scene. Curated by Charlotte Dutoit (Justkids), the street art program will transform the festival landscape into a magical art-inspired playground to give people a playful and unexpected escape into art.

Contributing artists include:

Borondo (Spain) – Borondo is a rising Spanish urban artist, currently living in London, heralded for his classical painting techniques. Since his formal studies, Borondo has painted large-scale street art in the USA, Brazil, Turkey and across Europe. He quickly became London’s most talked about artist.

CYRCLE. (U.S) – This collective of street artists, graphic designers and traditional fine artists  from Los Angeles has been developing their own language for the past few years. In that brief time, CYRCLE. has made a massive impact on the street and gallery scene, quickly gaining the respect of the international art community. Their aesthetic combines Classic Romanticism with alchemic symbolism, introducing it to the contemporary world through street campaigns, gallery work, and collaborations.

D*Face (UK) – After participating in the 2013 festival, D*Face is involved once again in this year’s street art program.  Considered one of most prolific contemporary urban artists of his generation, he has been a leading figure in urban art for well over a decade. A  contemporary  of  Banksy,  he  was  at  the  forefront  of  the  urban  art  movement, and  has  had  a  constant  presence  throughout  its  meteoric  rise  into  popular culture.

Misaki Kawai (Japan) – Japanese Brooklyn bases artist, works with painting, drawing, sculpture, installations and books. Her works are filled with colorful characters, who appear to come from the dream world of film, music and comics. Strongly influenced by today’s consumer society – of which she herself is a part – Kawai fuses East with West, humour with seriousness and dreams with reality. In 2014 she was oart of the show “This is not a toy” co-curated by Pharrel Williams along Takashi Murakami and Kaws.

Li – Hill (Canada) – He incorporates found objects and unconventional materials to structure complex multi-layered pieces that are as aesthetic as they are thought provoking. He has had works shown in such national institutions as the National Gallery of Victoria, The Art Gallery of Ontario and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Fintan Magee (Australia) – Moving away from the traditional graffiti in recent years, the Australian artist has started to explore new ideas and imagery within his painting. In the last three years he has created  some  of  the  largest  and  most  interesting  street  pieces around the world.

Maser (Ireland) – Maser first started painting graffiti in Ireland in 1995 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the most innovative artists working in the field. Alongside  his  paintings  in  the public  realm,  Maser  also  produces  works  on  canvas,  video  and 3D  installations.

ROA (Belgium) – Renowned for his unique portrayal of large scale urban wildlife, disquietly cohabiting city streets, hand painted in his distinctive black and white style. ROA has become famous from painting animals on derelict buildings, shutters & walls literally all over the world. He has also exhibited to much acclaim internationally and was also included in the MOCA exhibition ‘Art In The Streets’ in LA.

Edoardo Tresoldi (Italy) – Scenographer and sculptor Edoardo Tresoldi, creates amazing hand-made sculpture from metallic wire mesh, transforming a mundane industrial material into delicately crafted three-dimensional figures. His participation for the Life Is Beautiful Festival will be the first appearance of Edoardo Tresoldi’s work in the United States

ART-tales

In addition to the street art, a first-class gallery art program curated by Patrick Duffy, President of the Las Vegas Art Museum, past executive board member for The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and Chairman of the UNLV Fine Art Galleries will also be presented at the festival. His program is set to take over the Western Hotel and will center on the visual manifestations of a selection of universal concepts and ideas including love, equality and family. Each transformed space will immerse attendees in the artist’s world through utilizing a multitude of senses beyond just the visual component. Duffy’s curation will include installments and collaborations from artists including: Audrey Barcio, Camilla Quinn, Eric Tillinghast, Gina Quaranto, Jerry M Misko II, Jesse Smigel, Jevijoe Vitug, JK Russ and Trifecta Gallery. Life is Beautiful Festival continues to stun music lovers with unexpected additions to its genre-spanning music lineup. Just announced as part of the three-day music, food, art and learning festival in Downtown Las Vegas on October 24 – 26 are electro-pop group Little Dragon, mega-DJ Baauer, songstress Kimbra, Nahko and Medicine for the People, breakout band Echosmith, and experimental indie rock group Bear Hands.

In their first Vegas appearance to-date, Little Dragon brings its Swedish-based form of electro-pop to the Life is Beautiful stage after a highly successful festival season. Baauer, of “Harlem Shake” fame, will add to the already robust DJ roster, which includes Skrillex, Girl Talk, A-Trak and more. Australian singer Kimbra will make the festival her first this year as she prepares to release her second album. Echosmith, siblings who have made it big with their breakout hit “Cool Kids” and were recently named one of MTV’s Artists to Watch, will also be joining the festival as well as spiritual Portland-based musicians Nahko and Medicine For the People and New York-based punk, indie rock band Bear Hands.

“This lineup was specifically designed for the Las Vegas audience,” states Allen Scott, Executive Vice President with Another Planet Entertainment. “Compared to other festivals, it’s one of the most diverse and impressive lineups this season—with many acts who rarely, if ever, play that area – and we can’t wait to see how fans react.”

Expanding from a two-day to a three-day cultural event, in response to the success of its first year, Life is Beautiful will once again play host to the world’s top musicians, chefs and cultural icons for an inspiring weekend in Downtown Las Vegas. The festival will feature an eclectic lineup of nearly 70 internationally established and emerging bands on four outdoor stages, including already announced talent, such as Kanye West, Foo Fighters, OutKast, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Lionel Richie, The Weeknd, The Flaming Lips, Girl Talk, Alt-J, The Roots, Kacey Musgraves, Fitz & The Tantrums and many more, plus a special performance from The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil with members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic.

Back for another year of culinary copiousness are chefs Bruce Bromberg and Eric Bromberg (Blue Ribbon, Brooklyn Bowl – Board Co-chairs), Scott Conant (Scarpetta – Board Member), Hubert Keller (Fleur by Hubert Keller – Board Member), Giada De Laurentiis (Giada), José Andrés (minibar by José Andrés), Cat Cora (Co-Founder of Chefs for Humanity – Board Member), Nancy Silverton (Mozza Restaurant Group),

and dozens more.

The Mob Museum Unveils NEW Bugsy Siegel, Illegal Casino Displays

the mob museum

THIS TUESDAY, THE MOB MUSEUM UNVEILS NEW  BUGSY SIEGEL, ILLEGAL CASINO DISPLAYS

CASINO DISPLAYS

CASINO DISPLAYS1

For the first time this Tuesday, June 17, rare gambling artifacts will be unveiled in two separate displays at The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. The new displays represent the collaboration between The Mob Museum and the Museum of Gaming History, a preservation project of the more than 1,800 members of the international Casino Chip and Gaming Token Collectors Club.

The first display, located on the Museum’s second floor in the Open City section, features rare, early to mid-20th century casino chips, photographs and other memorabilia from the 1946 opening of Bugsy Siegel’s Flamingo Hotel. The second display, located on the third floor in the Evidence Room, presents artifacts from legendary illegal gambling halls around the United States. Both displays open simultaneously with an exhibit debuting at the El Cortez Hotel-Casino, which features casino chips and other objects from the many downtown casinos once operated by the late Jackie Gaughan.

About Bugsy Siegel’s Flamingo Hotel
Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opened the Flamingo Hotel on Dec. 26, 1946. Although not Las Vegas’ first resort, the Flamingo’s modern design and luxury appointments set a new standard for the Strip. The $6 million that Siegel poured into construction and materials for the 105-room Flamingo is the equivalent of more than $70 million today.

Siegel’s wasteful spending on the Flamingo did not sit well with his Mob partners. Six months after the opening, he was murdered in his girlfriend Virginia Hill’s house in Beverly Hills, Calif. Minutes after Siegel’s death, Mob associates Moe Sedway, Morris Rosen and Gus Greenbaum walked into the Flamingo and assumed control. Nearly 70 years later, the murder remains unsolved.

About Illegal Gambling Halls in the United States
Before Las Vegas emerged as the nation’s undisputed casino capital, gamblers ventured to out-of-the-way illegal clubs across the country to satisfy their thirst for wagering.

New York City organized crime kingpin Meyer Lansky operated gambling halls in places such as Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Hallandale, Fla., near Miami. New York City crime boss Frank Costello was heavily invested in New Orleans. Moe Dalitz, from Cleveland and later Las Vegas, had gambling halls in Newport, Ky., near Cincinnati, and Youngstown, Ohio.

Local politicians and police officials beholden to organized crime interests allowed these clubs to operate as long as they kept a low profile. But after Tennessee Senator Estes Kefauver held hearings in 1950-51 exposing the Mob’s illicit activities across the country, pressure mounted to shut down illegal casinos. Lansky, Dalitz and others shifted their gambling investments to Las Vegas.

Life is Beautiful Festival

Non-profit Partners Activate “Charity Lane” at Life is Beautiful Festival

Six charity partners to set up immersive goodwill experience, Oct. 26 & 27

On October 26 and 27, 2013, a portion of the Life is Beautiful Festival grounds will transform into a beacon of goodwill, with the launch of Charity Lane. Six worthy causes – charity: water, Three Square Food Bank, Communities In Schools of Nevada, To Write Love On Her Arms, Love Hope Strength and Mama Hope (Stop the Pity), – will execute creative and engaging activations for festival-goers who want to give back. Additionally, the festival will fundraise for said charities and make history as the first event of its kind to employ a location-based mobile donation site via Modern Giver.

As the festival’s exclusive donation medium, Modern Giver will offer fast, remote, and instant contributions to participating nonprofits (no cash, app or download needed).  To contribute, individuals can simply visit ModernGiver.com on their smartphone, choose one of the Life is Beautiful partner charities, and donate using their credit or debit card. Life is Beautiful is the first ever festival to leverage location-based mobile donations via Modern Giver to benefit partnering charities.

Within the festival itself, attendees can interact with the six chosen nonprofits in a portion of the grounds, called Charity Lane. Charity Lane will offer educational and interactive demonstrations from participating charities with far-reaching causes, benefitting local, national and international communities:

charity: water: charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. Festival goers will be able to partake in the organization’s “water walk” which gives them a hands-on feel for what people without fresh, clean water go through.

Three Square Food Bank: Established in 2007, Three Square Food Bank helps offer wholesome, nutritious food to nearly 100,000 Southern Nevadans each month. Three Square will be hosting a “backpack packing” session where festival goers can fill a bag full of food. The bags will support Three Square’s “BackPack for Kids” program which assists more than 275 schools with up to 5,000 children receiving supplemental weekend meals each week.

Communities in Schools of Nevada: Communities In Schools of Nevada supports nearly 33,000 students at 43 schools throughout the state, surrounding low-income, high-risk students with a community of support and the resources they need to succeed. They will be showcasing thought provoking imagery and items, including worn and tattered shoes, shining a light on the struggles underprivileged Nevadan school children face every day.

To Write Love On Her Arms: To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA) is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and help for those struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA invite attendees to share their biggest fears and greatest dreams via provided cards. The cards are posted all over the booth for everyone to see.

Love Hope Strength:  Love Hope Strength turns concerts into lifesaving events, through their GET ON THE LIST campaign, in which they register marrow donors from concerts around the world. Love Hope Strength will be activating their now famous GET ON THE LIST “Marrow Drive” at Life is Beautiful.  Festival attendees can register to be marrow donors via a simple free cheek swab and registration form that may help save the life of someone around the globe with cancer.

Mama Hope (Stop The Pity): Stop The Pity is a movement that tells a new story about poverty, focusing on potential, not pity. Mama Hope will be giving life to their Stop The Pity campaign by setting up a video booth and asking people “How do you make life beautiful?”. The answers will be compiled and shared with the African villages the Stop The Pity movement supports.

Life is Beautiful Festival Announces Interactive Art Programming Complete with Theatrical, Visual and Street Art Projects

Life is Beautiful Festival Announces Interactive Art Programming
Complete with Theatrical, Visual and Street Art Projects

Headlining performance artists Cirque du Soleil, “Absinthe”, Human Nature, Jabbawockeez,
“Million Dollar Quartet”, Recycled Percussion and “Rock of Ages” to take the stage

Street and traditional artists to erect murals and other immersive artistic endeavors

Life is Beautiful (L.I.B.) unveils its art programming for the inaugural festival taking place Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27, 2013. Designed to be seamlessly programmed with the music, food and learning festival elements, L.I.B’s art presentations will center around live performance, and several mediums of visual art with the festival grounds as its canvas.

“Our goal is to create a live urban gallery that is essentially woven into our festival footprint. We want to expose our festival-goers to many types of dynamic artistic mediums,” stated festival co-founder Rehan Choudhry. “We are fortunate that Las Vegas is home to many of the world’s greatest performance artists, and inspires much of the world’s great visual art. We are infusing those stunning influences into our festival experience.”

The festival’s art program is comprised of three separate initiatives, bringing artists out of their traditional studios, galleries or theaters and into the streets of Downtown Las Vegas. With an up-close-and-personal feel, L.I.B.’s art program is meant to surround guests with both elusive and interactive activations.

RISE ABOVE: A Street Art Program
The urban surroundings of the Life is Beautiful venue provide a perfect backdrop for what will be an  eclectic and permanent street art program that will redefine the look of Downtown Las Vegas for years to come. Curated by Charlotte Dutoit, RISE ABOVE will turn Downtown Las Vegas into an art-inspired playground showcasing works by some of the biggest names in international street art. Contributing artists include: Vhils (Portugal), D*Face (UK), Alexis Diaz (AKA La Pandilla from Puerto Rico), Interesni Kazki (Ukrane), Zio Ziegler (San Francisco), Ana Maria (Houston) and Aware (Las Vegas). Creation of these original pieces, which include murals, stencils by The Stencil Network (NYC) and giant show posters by Bicicleta Sem Freio (Brazil), will begin the week prior to the festival and be completed live on site.

The Odyssey: A Visual Art Experience
A first-class visual art program, curated by Patrick Duffy, former president of the Las Vegas Art Museum and current executive board member for Smith Center for the Performing Arts, will also be presented at L.I.B. His program, entitled The Odyssey, is a visual exploration of the art that inspires creativity in all of us, no matter age, education or upbringing. Presented through staged exhibits at varying venues, The Odyssey will show work from the Opportunity Village Art and Enrichment Program, Eric Tillinghast, William T. Wiley, Wendy Kveck, Catherine Borg, Yasmina and Javier Sanchez, Adam Morey, and Jaime Sholnick.

At the helm of the fine art programming is a multi-media presentation of “13 Most Beautiful…Songs for Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests” featuring Dean and Britta. A project commissioned by the Andy Warhol Museum and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, “13 Most Beautiful” is a live multimedia performance featuring large scale video projection of Warhol’s Screen Tests (4-minute silent film portraits of visitors to his studio), set to the music of Dean and Britta and their band, who perform live on stage while the films are projected above.

“For many years ‘art’ has been synonymous with Downtown Las Vegas,” says L.I.B. partner and First Friday managing partner Joey Vanas. “What Life is Beautiful intends to do during our festival weekend and beyond is bring national and international attention to our local artists and further the growth of Downtown Las Vegas as a serious art community.”

Theatrical Performances
Festival attendees will see why Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of the World through performances from renowned Strip productions that will vacate their theaters and permeate the streets of Downtown. Featured acts include six shows by Cirque du Soliel, “Absinthe”, Human Nature, “Jabbawockeez”, “Million Dollar Quartet”, Recycled Percussion and “Rock of Ages”. Each will be programmed on (and sometimes off) the festival stages, presenting snippets of their well-known productions and giving guests an intimate yet varied taste of some of the best live shows in town.

Launch the First Traveling Hearts of Las Vegas Collection

On Thursday afternoon, El Cortez Hotel & Casino Executive Vice President Alexandra Epstein and representatives from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Dorit Schwartz and Lainie Strouse, unveiled the first traveling Hearts of Las Vegascollection at El Cortez’s Jackie Gaughan Plaza.

The 10 artistic human-heart sculptures have been crafted by local artists and will remain on display in the Jackie Gaughan Plaza for the next two months. The exhibit will not only act as a breathtaking art installation, but it will also help bring awareness to the work of St. Jude and their continued support for the treatment of childhood cancer and other life-threatening childhood diseases.

After thanking the representatives of St. Jude for bestowing this honor upon El Cortez, Epstein introduced Schwartz and Strouse, who each offered an encouraging message of hope and gracious support while sharing St. Jude’s mission. Having the opportunity to use an innovative platform such as the Hearts of Las Vegas has allowed St. Jude to spread their message the local community.

To conclude the unveiling ceremony, Schwartz and Strouse gifted Epstein and El Cortez with a heart sculpture to remain permanently on the Jackie Gaughan Plaza.

Prior to the formation of the traveling display, the Hearts of Las Vegas were featured individually throughout the streets of Las Vegas. In May 2012, a selection of hearts were auctioned to local individuals at the third annual “Las Vegas Honors St. Jude: An Affair of the Art” event. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the collection benefited the children of St. Jude.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Since opening 50 years ago, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives and, for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries. The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life.
