The Hard Rock Store Hosts Book Signing with Rock and Roll Journalist Lonn Friend and his Latest Memoir, Sweet Demotion, August 19

WHAT:             Veteran writer and multi-media personality, Lonn Friend gets up close and personal with fans and hosts a  book signing for his newest book, Sweet Demotion: How an Almost Famous Rock Journalist Lost Everything and then Found Himself (almost).

                           6 – 8 p.m.

WHO:               Lonn Friend,  journalist and author

Friend is best known for his work in the late 1980s and 90s as editor of RIP Magazine, which covered the debaucheries in the world of heavy metal music and the rock stars who led the movement.  Friend began his career in 1982 as associate editor of Hustler Magazine, the flagship journal of Larry Flynt Publications (LFP).  After rising to senior editor at Hustler, he transitioned to executive editor of Chic Magazine and then to RIP in the spring of 1987.  RIP was the first non-pornographic publication produced by LFP.  After six months on staff, Friend was promoted to editor-in-chief, where he transformed RIP into one of the leading heavy metal magazines of its time.  Friend documented his experiences with the heroes of heavy metal in his 2006 memoir, Life on Planet Rock and released his follow-up, Sweet Demotion, in 2011.

WHERE:           The Hard Rock Store at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

MORE:             Guests who visit The Hard Rock Store during Friend’s book signing may purchase the book for $30.

Sweet Demotion chronicles a thirteen-year period of personal deconstruction, spiritual madness, and bizarre anecdotal wordplay where faith was lost in everything but the moment and the music. Friend’s intimate adventure invites the reader to a porn burial in the desert, a Janis Joplin ghost sighting, a Dallas meditation on the anniversary of JFK’s assassination following the interview of a heavy metal legend and the sharing of sacred space on a northeast lake with the lead singer of Aerosmith. Sweet Demotion is a sojourn to near-enlightenment that no one but Friend could have possibly experienced.  The book is available at major bookstores nationwide as well as on Amazon.com.

Sailor Jerry

Named after the legendary sailor, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, Sailor Jerry is a straight-up, no-nonsense rum.  Crafting the spirit from a selection of rums distilled in the Caribbean, master blenders “marry” the rums and infuse it with a one-of-a-kind mix of spices and other natural flavors, most notably vanilla and a touch of cinnamon.  The result is high-quality, old-school spiced rum; an enduring classic, not a fly-by-night fancy.  For additional information, visit sailorjerry.com.

On sale Saturday, June 11 at noon

Multi-platinum rock band Incubus hits the road for a 30-city North America tour and makes a stop at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Saturday, Oct. 8 with special guest Young the Giant.

The tour is in support of their sixth studio album If Not Now, When?, available in stores on Tuesday, July 12. The highly anticipated album features lead single “Adolescents” which is topping the charts at alternative radio as well as newly released single “Promises, Promises.”

Fans who pre-order the album at www.enjoyincubus.com will get exclusive early access to tickets for the upcoming tour. Upon ordering, fans will immediately be sent MP3 of singles “Adolescents” and “Promises, Promises”. An album pre-order is also available on iTunes featuring exclusive content.

Having sold more than 13 million albums worldwide, Incubus’ extraordinary career has spanned over a decade, and includes six studio albums, which have spawned a total of thirteen Top 10 Rock hits with four singles debuting at No. 1 upon their release. The multi-platinum quintet’s last studio album Light Grenades debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 (highest charting album debut of band’s career) and has sold more than 800,000 copies to date in the US.

Hailing from Calabasas, California, Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger and Jose Pasillas formed Incubus in 1991 while they were in high school. The band’s break came in 1999 with the singles, “Pardon Me,” “Stellar” and “Drive,” from their second full-length, double-platinum selling disc Make Yourself. The group’s third album, Morning View, released in 2001, debuted at No. 2 on the album chart and included the radio hits “Wish You Were Here,” “Nice to Know You” and “Warning.” In 2004, Incubus released A Crow Left of the Murder which achieved platinum status on the strength of the No. 1 hit “Megalomanic.”

Deftones *this weekend* Saturday, June 11 at 8 p.m.
(Special guests The Dillinger Escape Plan and Le Butcherettes)
Tickets start at $30.50
On sale now
After a sold out show with Alice in Chains in fall 2010, Deftones return to The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Saturday, June 11 with special guests The Dillinger Escape Plan and Le Butcherettes.

Deftones, one of the most enduring and influential forces in modern rock, released their latest album Diamond Eyes in May 2010. The sixth full-length studio effort by the Grammy-winning, platinum-certified group was produced and mixed by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice in Chains, Coheed & Cambria, Foo Fighters). The band recorded the album after their best friend and bassist Chi Cheng sustained a debilitating brain injury from a car accident in November 2008. MySpace.com recently premiered a new video for lead single “Diamond Eyes,” which was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Roboshobo (Metallica, Mastodon, B-52’s).

As a band out of high school, Deftones mixed trip hop with thrash, melodic vocals with crushing reverb and pretty with ugly. As chart-toppers and headliners, they have crossed over genres and defied categorization. Above all, Deftones have stuck together throughout their often-turbulent tenure and now deliver one of the most compelling records of their career.

Critics, marketers and radio alike have struggled with where to place or how to define Deftones. The band has played with punk rockers L7, toured with Metallica and appealed to some of the same fan base as Morrissey and generally defied simple, and ultimately pointless genre classification.

Kid Cudi Friday, June 24 at 9 p.m.
(Special guest Chip Tha Ripper)
Tickets start at $39.50
On sale now
Hip Hop sensation Kid Cudi’s The Cud Life Tour hits The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Friday, June 24 with special guest Chip Tha Ripper.

Cudi’s first hit “Day ‘N’ Nite” was inspired by the passing of his uncle and changed his life forever. Recorded in a pitch-black room, Cudi put his heart into the gloomy pop-hit. After posting it on his MySpace, the song started racking up hits and eventually caught the attention of A-Trak, Kanye West’s former tour DJ. A-Trak fell in love with song, and Cudi ended up signing a single deal on the DJ’s Fool’s Gold label. A critically-acclaimed mixtape, A KiD Named CuDi was the MC’s first full body of work.

The game truly changed when A-Trak played “Day N Nite” at Kanye West’s “Stronger” premiere party. West loved the song and saw enough potential in Cudi that he flew him out to Hawaii to do reference hooks for Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3. Soon, West and Cudi started work on Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreak album. Cudi’s sing-songy, eclectic style was the perfect match for 808s & Heartbreak and the up-and-comer ended up writing four songs. With West behind him and a Billboard hit with “Day ‘N’ Nite,” Cudi inked a deal with Kanye’s G.O.O.D music label. Soon after, he parlayed that into a major deal with Universal Motown.

On September 15, 2009, Kid Cudi released his debut album Man On The Moon: The End Of Day, a genre-bending concept album that took people through Scott Mescudi’s, aka Kid Cudi, dreams, nightmares, and unique views of the world. Featuring production from Emile, Plain Pat, RATATAT, MGMT and Kanye West, the album sold 104,419 copies its first week, landing No. 4 on the Billboard chart. The album’s reception proved Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone’s assertion that Cudi was a “game-changer in hip-hop.” To date, he’s sold over 4.6 million digital singles, 1.3 million mobiletones, and according to The Hype Machine, he is among the top ten most blogged about artists of all-time.

Cudi released his sophomore album, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, in 2010. The album featured Kanye West, Mary J. Blige and GLC, with production from Emile, Plain Pat, Jim Jonsin, Diplo, Dot Da Genius and others.
