The Spinners
Saturday, April 21

For more than 50 years, The Spinners have impressed fans with their soulful sounds, continuing to tour with original member Henry Fambrough. Ironically, the band was from Detroit where they originally formed as a doo wop group during the late ‘50s. Throughout the ‘60s, The Spinners shifted to R&B and pop, and by the mid-60s, they had signed with Motown Records.

The Spinners later signed with Atlantic Records, releasing several chart-topping hits and went on to become one of the biggest soul groups of the 1970s. With a detailed web of horns, strings, backing vocals, and lightly funky rhythms, the group recorded several soul classics, including “I’ll Be Around,” “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “Mighty Love,” “Ghetto Child,” “Then Came You,” “Games People Play,” and “The Rubberband Man.” In 1976, The Spinners received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999.

Rock in Rio Announces Entertainment Leaders MGM Resorts International, Cirque du Soleil and

Ron Burkle as Partners in the World’s Biggest Music Festival, Coming to Las Vegas in 2015

Rock in Rio USA’s “City of Rock” Gains New Support from Las Vegas Entertainment Experts

Rock in Rio, the world’s biggest music festival, has joined forces with entertainment giants MGM RESORTS INTERNATIONAL(NYSE:MGM), Cirque du Soleil and Ron Burkle (The Yucaipa Companies) for the festival’s U.S. debut in Las Vegas in May 2015. An alliance founded on a shared commitment to creating innovative entertainment, Rock in Rio, MGM Resorts and Cirque du Soleil will redefine the modern music festival for U.S. audiences with a monumental combination of the biggest names in music and a fully immersive entertainment experience, all housed in a spectacular, custom-made “City of Rock.”

Over the past 30 years, Rock in Rio festivals have brought more than 1,120 performances to 1 billion fans worldwide, and that number will grow next month at Rock in Rio Lisbon (Portugal) where The Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake, Lorde, Arcade Fire and Ed Sheeran, among others, are scheduled to perform.

“We are thrilled to welcome MGM Resorts, Cirque du Soleil and Ron Burkle as part of the Rock in Rio USA family,” said Roberto Medina, founder, Rock in Rio. “It’s a testament to the festival’s 30-year history and outstanding reputation to have these entertainment giants on board and, with added power from the partners, our first Rock in Rio USA will be unlike any festival anyone has ever experienced – on the biggest stage in the world in the heart of Las Vegas.”

Building the City of Rock in Las Vegas
As the premier entertainment company in the world, MGM Resorts’ expertise in developing world-class infrastructure will lay the groundwork to transform 33 acres of prime Las Vegas real estate into the magical City of Rock. The permanent open-air concert venue will be located on The Strip near the corner of Sahara Avenue and have the capacity for 80,000 people per day. The design and layout will be signature Rock in Rio, complete with five stages; themed streets boasting the sights, sounds, and foods of Brazil, the U.S. and the United Kingdom; thrilling rides including a zip line; food courts, shopping areas and other activities. After the festival, the incredible venue will remain for MGM Resorts to host other entertainment experiences for people from around the world.

Bill Hornbuckle, president of MGM Resorts International, said, “The entertainment scene has changed dramatically in recent years, as has the way consumers want to experience their entertainment. With our innovative new partners at Rock in Rio and the creative geniuses at Cirque du Soleil, we will introduce Las Vegas to an unprecedented music festival in a setting that will never be replicated.” Hornbuckle continued, “The event will serve as a major tourism driver for Las Vegas, expected to draw well over 300,000 people to our city over the four days of the concert.”

Transforming the Festival Experience
Having hosted resident shows in Las Vegas for more than 20 years, Cirque du Soleil will bring deep knowledge of the market and consumer behavior to the Rock in Rio partnership. This commitment to creating a close and emotional relationship with the public is part of what sets Rock in Rio apart from other music festivals and helps make it the world’s biggest music and entertainment event.

Jerry Nadal, senior vice president, Resident Shows Division, Cirque du Soleil, added, “As a creative live entertainment producer, Cirque du Soleil is uniquely suited to help bring an unforgettable mix of wonder, enjoyment and artistic excellence to Las Vegas with the first-ever Rock in Rio USA experience. Rock in Rio already is a cultural phenomenon around the globe, and we are excited to be part of the festival’s U.S. introduction.”

Rock in Rio, MGM Resorts and Cirque du Soleil plan to offer hospitality packages for tourists that will guarantee festival-goers an unforgettable and seamless experience not only at Rock in Rio USA but throughout their stay in Las Vegas.

The countdown to Rock in Rio USA also is supported by media partners iHeartRadio and NCM Network. Together, a robust advertising and communications campaign will bring news and announcements to consumers nationwide over the next 12 months.

Tickets for Rock in Rio USA will go on sale to the general public in January 2015, but they can currently be reserved, for a limited period of time – without any payment obligation – on the festival’s official website. The Smith Center is excited to add three additional shows to the spring/early summer season in Reynolds Hall with Under The Streetlamp with special guests Gentleman’s Rule and Johnny Mathis in May and 50 Shades! The Musical – The Original Parody in June.

With their unique style and modern “Rat Pack” persona, Under The Streetlamp brings the American Radio Songbook to a whole new level. With the mantra “Retro never sounded so now,” the four extremely talented and charismatic former cast members of the Tony® Award-winning Broadway musical “Jersey Boys” provide an electrifying concert.

Backed by an outstanding ten-piece band, singers Michael Ingersoll, Shonn Wiley, Michael Cunio and Christopher Kale Jones bring classic hits of the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s back to the millions of fans who fell in love with this music in the first place.  The show includes a perfect balance of tender ballads and uptempo tunes, all done with the same signature harmonies and slick dance moves that have made them irresistible. Of course no Under The Streetlamp show would be complete without a musical tribute to “Jersey Boy” Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

From the creator of Straight No Chaser and the producer and manager of Under The Streetlamp, Gentleman’s Rule exudes youth, energy and incredible harmonies. Gentleman’s Rule blends their youthful style and outstanding vocals with timeless classics and contemporary hits. Their diverse music selections include songs by the legendary Manhattans, Bill Withers, the Rolling Stones, Rascal Flatts and the Spencer Davis Band, just to name a few.

The eight versatile and individually talented vocalists in Gentleman’s Rule are Will Lockhart, Brent Mann, Luke Mechlin, Holland Nightenhelser, Jasper Smith, Jesse Townes, Andrew Morstein and TJ Breen. Catch Under The Streetlamp with Gentleman’s Rule Sunday, May 4.

Celebrating his 58th year in the music industry, Johnny Mathis is Columbia Records’ longest-running artist. A sublime vocalist whose approach to pop music eclipses passing fads and trends, Mathis has performed songs in an incredible variety of styles and categories — from music composed for stage and film to golden era jazz standards, contemporary pop hits, and holiday music — all of which has assured his reputation as one of the most enduring vocalists in music history.

Best-known for his supremely popular hits like “Chances Are,” “It’s Not For Me To Say” and “Misty,” Mathis has recorded more than 80 albums and has had 50 hits on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary Chart. During his extensive career he has had three songs inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2003 Mathis was given the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. On Friday, May 3, Mathis returns to Las Vegas to perform some of his greatest hits and personal favorites.

50 Shades! The Musical – The Original Parody has played to sold-out audiences in New York, Chicago and beyond. Opening with a ladies book club deciding to read “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the musical is an interpretation of the best-selling novel that takes audiences on a hilarious musical roller coaster ride. The production features a cast of nine performing 11 original songs, dance numbers, as well as an on-stage band. Original songs include “They Get Nasty,” “I Don’t Make Love,” and “There’s a Hole Inside of Me.”

The show is a parody of both the books and the phenomenon of “50 Shades of Grey,” spoofing many of their conventions for a hilarious evening of entertainment. Like the book series, 50 Shades! The Musical is not for those under the age of 18, but does not cross boundaries that would make general audiences squirm. Unleash your inhibitions with 50 Shades! The Musical Saturday, June 7.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 21 at 10 a.m. at The Smith Center Box Office, located at 361 Symphony Park Avenue, by phone at 702-749-2000 or 808-326-6868 (TTY) and online at www.TheSmithCenter.com. For Preferred seating and special rates for groups of 10 or more, contact 702-749-2348.

TO CONTINUE IN 2014 AT THE
LVH – LAS VEGAS HOTEL & CASINO

The LVH – Las Vegas Hotel & Casino is excited to announce that its spectacular show, “Raiding the Rock Vault,” has signed a long term agreement to continue through 2014.

“Raiding the Rock Vault” opened in March 2013 and has consistently received critical and audience acclaim, as well as having been rated Vegas’ #1 Show.  The show will reopen on January 24, 2014.

“The LVH is beyond thrilled to have “Raiding the Rock Vault” continue in 2014,” said LVH Vice President of Entertainment, Rick White.  “The show promises to only get bigger and better this year with new cast members, songs and guest stars.  We truly believe it’s going to continue to be known as THE must-see show for visitors and locals alike.”

“We are honored to bring this incredible musical extravaganza back to the legendary stage which was the home of long term residencies by Elvis Presley, Liberace and Barry Manilow, as well as concert performances by many of the top rock, pop and country artists of all time,” said “Raiding the Rock Vault” producer Sir Harry Cowell.

This amazing concert experience brings the history of rock ‘n’ roll to life with an all-star super group of musicians the likes of which is not seen anywhere in Las Vegas.  The legendary classic rock songs of the `60s, `70s and `80s that everyone immediately recognizes – anthems for a generation – are played with stunning accuracy by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Howard Leese [Guitar] (Heart), sensational guitar player Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), phenomenal vocalists John Payne [Lead Vocals and Bass] (Asia), Robin McAuley [Lead Vocals] (MSG, Survivor), Paul Shortino [Lead Vocals] (Rough Cutt, Quite Riot), Andrew Freeman [Lead Vocals and Guitars] (Lynch Mob, The Offspring), extraordinary drummer Jay Schellen (Badfinger, Asia), and keyboard whiz Michael T. Ross (Lita Ford Band).  In addition to this unbelievable roster of rock musicianship, rotating special guests will continue to be a part of the show.  Previous special guests included Lou Gramm, original lead singer of Foreigner, Bobby Kimball, original lead singer of Toto, founding member and lead singer of Yes, Jon Anderson, and Mickey Thomas of Starship.

The show itself revolves around the “Rock Vault,” a giant capsule found in the distant future and opened to reveal the history of classic rock.  Entertaining vignettes by actors, narration by acclaimed actor Richard Malmos, and historical videos on giant screens help move the story through time.  The show is, of course, highlighted by electrfying performances of rock classics from The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Free, The Eagles, Queen, Boston, Kansas, U2, Van Halen, AC/DC, Foreigner, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Supertramp, and many, many more.

Written by musician, producer and vocalist, John Payne (Asia), and Grammy Award-winning record producer David Kershenbaum (Joe Jackson, Tracy Chapman, Supertramp) “Raiding the Rock Vault” was born to give audiences an illuminating look at the history of rock and, for those who lived it, an exciting trip down memory lane.

Announcing P3Studio Artist-in-Residence Todd DiCiurcio

C76DA5D4-121D-4E26-A09C-B1A9E11D0410

TODD DICIURCIO PRESENTS DRAW US SIN
April 24 – May 12, 2013
Hours: Wednesday – Sunday | 6 – 11PM

P3Studio
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas
3708 Las Vegas Boulevard South
Las Vegas, NV 89109

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, announce artist-in-residence Todd DiCiurcio. While in P3Studio, DiCiurcio will transform the space into a working studio where he will draw performances live while they happen. Musicians, performers and guests will be able to sign up for an opportunity to perform a 1 hour set in P3Studio while DiCiurcio captures them on paper using a range of media. Each performer will have free reign to do whatever they please with their time slot and guests will be encouraged to experience each set. These visual recordings will be immediately displayed in P3Studio as they are finished. DiCiurcio’s process will involve the use of assemblage in order to build upon the environmental compositions as they are drawn, and later implemented. He will be inviting special guests to attend and perform from underground to well known acts, including The Men and BadBad. DiCiurcio’s objective is to depict live performances to showcase a dialogue between the visual work and the music, the outcome of which will expose the politics and progress of the current underground showcase.

New York based artist Todd DiCiurcio creates mixed media drawings that grasp the electric experience of the “live” musical performance. For over a decade as both an artist and a witness, he chose to depict the immediacy of modern culture by rendering the live performances of contemporary musicians through ink and graphite. His drawings are as spontaneous as the performances themselves, created in one continuous line. By rendering in visual language the temporality of music, DiCiurcio creates significant and poignantly energetic aesthetic compositions. His unchained use of lines produces spontaneous but at the same time highly elaborated images.

Throughout his career, DiCiurcio has documented numerous bands, including: Guided by Voices, Jane’s Addiction, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Bon Jovi, Kings of Leon, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Mould, Broken Social Scene, Exitmusic, Wyclef Jean, The English Beat, Grizzly Bear, The Killers, Angus Stone, MT Warning, The Rolling Stones, New Order, Cat Power, Guster and many others. Through live drawings that are dynamically rendered during the performance, his work grasps the spontaneity and progressive quality of events as they unfold.

The artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.
