ARIA Resort & Casino's 13th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational At Shadow Creek - Day 4

The winning duo won by four strokes, taking home the title with a score of nine-under 135, beating the second-place team of NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson and MJCI defending champion and MLB Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith. The tournament was held at Shadow Creek for the fourth consecutive year and raised more than $500,000 for charity.

Urlacher and Clemens, who each took home $20,000 for their designated charities, followed up their first-round score of seven-under 65 with a two-under 70 on day two. They were able to break a first-round tie with Dickerson and Smith with a stretch of three birdies in four holes and coasted to a victory.  Dickerson/Smith hit a rough patch in the middle of their second round resulting in a couple of bogies.

Fan favorite, NBA legend and tournament host Michael Jordan teamed up with NFL Super Bowl champion and “sack master” Dwight Freeney for the second straight year and finished in a tie for third at four-under 140.

When asked about the tournament and their winning results, Clemens said, “Michael Jordan, ARIA and Shadow Creek put on a great event every year and that’s why you see the firepower we had on the course this week. Urlacher played like a champ and I was fortunate to have him as my partner.”

Urlacher followed his partner’s comments with, “Roger has an incredible drive and we played really well together. As a sports fan myself, it was incredible to meet and play with (Ozzie) Smith and (Eric) Dickerson who were two of my idols growing up.”

Since its inception in 2001, MJCI has raised nearly $7 million for charities including this year’s beneficiaries Make-A-Wish, James R. Jordan Foundation, Keep Memory Alive, Opportunity Village and Cats Care, the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats’ charity arm.

Notable Moments from the Course:

  • The most important part of MJCI is its charitable contributions, which were spotlighted today through multiple check presentations to the tournament’s charity beneficiaries: Make A Wish Foundation, Keep Memory Alive, Cat’s Care and Opportunity Village.
  • Host Michael Jordan enjoyed a festive day on the course highlighted by some legend-worthy shots and an extremely large entourage with more than 25 golf carts in tow. Jordan started the day with a 300-plus-yard tee shot straight down the middle on No. 1, followed it up with a number of good putts throughout the round and excited the crowd on No. 17 with a 40-foot chip-in from the side of the par-3 green. Jordan and teammate Dwight Freeney escaped disaster on the water hole by hitting their tee shot just off the right side of the green.  With the hole on the far left side of the green, Jordan sized up the second shot and chipped the ball approximately one-third of the way to the pin. The ball followed the break in the green, turned left toward the cup and lipped in for a birdie creating a thunderous roar from the huge gallery. It was loud enough to be heard on the 18th tee box up the hill.
  • After Chris Chelios dribbled his tee shot into the water on the very first hole, playing partner Wayne Gretzky walked over to host Michael Jordan and asked, “You gave me Charles Barkley, Jr.?” The crowd roared with laughter and Gretzky had Jordan in stitches.
  • Teasing his teammates because he was so far ahead, Wayne Gretzky lounged on his side pretending to “nap” at hole 18.
  • Brian Baumgartner and Aaron Rodgers started their own tradition, giving each other chest bumps while yelling, “Yes Sir!” after every successful shot on the course.
  • At the par-3 13th hole, a woman celebrating her bachelorette party in Vegas asked Ray Romano to sign her ‘bride-to-be sash’, to which he obliged. Later, Romano hit a solid drive off the 16th hole tee box and celebrated as if it was effortless. Ken Griffey Jr. corroborated, “Now that’s a professional golfer there–picking up the tee while it’s still in the air”
  • In the first foursome of the day, Winky Wright’s playing partner Steve Monroe hit his second shot from the 16th fairway wide right of the green. It nearly clipped the scoreboard and had a volunteer running for cover. He followed up that miscue by hitting his tee shot on the par-3 17th to within two feet of the pin and converted the birdie putt.  Monroe and Wright went on to finish the day with an eagle-3 on the No. 18 par-5.
  • Roger Clemens asked Brian Urlacher, who was wearing a tight fitting shirt, “When did you start wearing mediums?” Urlacher responded, “I’ve been doing 300 crunches a day!” Clemens answered, “Yeah, I’d like to see that!”
  • As Julius Erving signed autographs for two young fans, he called over Vince Coleman to show him the pictures he was signing, depicting a legendary shot of him dunking over an opponent. Vince Coleman started laughing and shouted “Wow, look at those ups!” Dr. J suavely responded with, “Yeah, and I am coming down there.” The group and the fans erupted into laughter.

Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Day Two News & Notes

MJCI News & Notes – Day Two, Celeb-Am

The second day of the celebrity-pro-am portion of the 13th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI) hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas ended late Friday night with a two-team tie between former MLB All-Star Roger Clemens and country music superstar Jake Owen. The two teams shot a score of -19 under par, 53. However, Clemens’ foursome earned the day-two victory by virtue of a scorecard tiebreaker. NFL All-Pro defensive lineman Dwight Freeney led his team to a third-place finish with a -17 under par, 55.

Notable Moments from the Course:

  • This year’s MJCI once again featured a very special moment as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Michael Jordan teamed up to make Wish Kid Lucas a very happy young man. The nine-year-old’s wish was to meet Michael Jordan and not only did he get to meet the NBA legend, he also received a private putting lesson on the practice green at Shadow Creek.  Jordan coached him a bit and told him he knew he could sink a shot on his own and they weren’t leaving until he did. A few putts later Lucas reached his goal, Jordan threw his hands in the air in celebration and then gave the young golfer a congratulatory high-five.
  • Ron Harper, one of Michael Jordan’s former Chicago Bulls teammates, had the announcer introduce him as “James Bond 004” before teeing off at the first hole. After later connecting with one of the longest drives of the day on the 12th hole, Harper yelled, “Oh yeah baby!”
  • Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Mauricio Umansky stopped by the ARIA Spa & Salon Refresher Tent for a quick facial oxygen treatment while he waited to tee off at the 13th.
  • After a player in his group shot a ball near some spectators, Brian Baumgartner, star of “The Office” told the ladies closest they could pick it up. “You don’t want it?” they asked. “If we need that ball we’re in big trouble,” he quipped. The crowd roared with laughter.  He later hit the ball out of the sand trap at the 18th hole so hard that it almost sailed into the grand stand. The ball hit the rail and rolled onto the green. He got a sarcastic standing O before walking up to the crowd to apologize.
  • Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson showed up at the Wheels Up Lounge at hole 13. Alan Thicke used five mulligans before he made it on the green and the host asked if Russell Wilson had any tips for Alan. He replied, “hit it straight!”
  • Country singer Jake Owen traded in his cowboy boots for some imaginary tap shoes at the fourth green where he danced a jig. Check out the video here.
  • Actress and singer Christina Milian took a break to get a massage at the ARIA refresher tent before heading over to the Wheels Up Lounge. Following her round, she signed autographs for fans, including one who may be her youngest. A young toddler handed Christina the marker to sign an autograph. When Christina was interviewed by Golf Magazine she said her ideal golf foursome would be Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Jake Owen.
  • Real Housewives of Orange County star Gretchen Rossi admitted on the first hole that she has probably only played golf about four times in her life. After a less than ideal first shot, the crowd teased but she shook it off and smiled.
  • Soccer star Brandi Chastain got some love from a fellow celebrity golfer. After making a long putt for par on number one, Brian Baumgartner jumped out of his cart and applauded loudly from the fairway. Brandi Chastain took the time to sign every autograph requested of her around the course and even recorded a message for a special fan. A gentleman on the sidelines told Chastain his young daughter idolized her and had chosen her number for her own soccer team jersey. Chastain recorded a personalized video for the girl encouraging her to continue playing and enjoy practicing with her dad

Sighting: Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Gala Celebration brings stars out for a cause at ARIA Resort & Casino, Las Vegas 4.4.14

Last night, sports and entertainment stars including Michael Jordan, Aaron Rodgers, Bruce Jenner, Nick Jonas, Ken Griffey Jr., Juan Pablo Galavis & Nikki Ferrell, Boyz II Men, Josh Freeman, Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Adrian Young, among dozens of others, gathered at ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the 13th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Celebration.

The star-studded annual gala marked a night of celebration kicking off the two days of exclusive celebrity golf competition at Shadow Creek in the name of charitable fundraising. Also in attendance was eight-year-old Lucas, a Make-A-Wish “wish kid” who fulfilled his dream of meeting MJ earlier in the day. Lucas received celebrity treatment, following celebrities including Jesse Williams, Alan Thicke, Brandi Chastain, Gretchen Rossi, Slade Smiley, Vince Coleman, Ozzie Smith, Mario Umansky, Chris Chelios, Brian Baumgartner, Flex Alexander, Mike Piazza and many more, down the red carpet as dozens of cameras flashed away.

At the gala celebration inside ARIA, celebrities mingled over a multiple-course gourmet dinner from incredible ARIA restaurants including Jean Georges Steakhouse, Sage, & Julian Serrano.

Jordan sat front row and center at a table by the stage, alongside pals including Ahmad Rashad and Stuart Scott. Bill Cramsey, ARIA’s Executive Director of National Marketing, introduced the tournament host and welcomed him to the stage, crediting MJ’s celebrity invitational tournament for the role it has played in the success of the resort itself.

Jordan welcomed guests to the gala and thanked ARIA, Shadow Creek, sponsors and volunteers for their time and service. Jordan also thanked all of his friends for taking the time out of their busy schedules to attend the tournament, reminding them that it’s not for him, but for the many people who receive support from the benefiting charities each year. He encouraged fellow celebs to find “wish kid” Lucas at the gala – telling the crowd how much fun they had together at the course and explaining that Lucas, and the many other children whose lives have been touched throughout MJCI’s thirteen years, are the true inspiration for holding events such as the celebration gala.

The celebrities and VIPs enjoyed an evening of entertainment hosted by magician, comedian, actor and television personality Justin Willman, a regular guest on The Tonight Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Chelsea Lately and host of Cupcake Wars.

Willman had the audience in stitches as he pulled Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant and former NFL halfback Jerome Bettis on stage for several magic tricks through his standup routine.

The gala’s headlining performer and GRAMMY Award-winning artist T-Pain brought the crowd to their feet as he launched his energetic set with hit song “Good Life” and thrilling the crowd with performances of some of his most famous collaborations including Jaime Foxx’s “Blame It,” Lil Wayne’s “Got Money,” Rick Ross’ “The Boss” and Flo Rida’s six-time, multi-platinum “Low,” among others.

Stars took to the dance floor to dance the night away, including actress Janet Jones-Gretzky who was spotted breaking it down to “Black And Yellow” alongside Alan Thicke’s wife and actress Tanya Callau.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and innovator of funk George Clinton surprised the crowd by joining T-Pain on stage for superstar collaboration of T-Pain and Maino’s 2009 hit, “All The Above.”

The legendary funk performer was next joined on stage by his band Parliament-Funkadelic to deliver signature songs “Bring The Funk,” “Flashlight” and more. Clinton, who has been performing for more than 50 years, put on an epic set, stepping off the stage and into the crowd numerous times to invigorate the dance floor and boogie with guests. The band jammed a continuous set featuring live saxophone, drums, soulful backup vocals and electric guitars and bases.

The celebration continued late into the night, as the ballroom transformed into a popup nightclub.

Notable Moments from the Course:

  • To start his day, Michael Jordan rolled up in his North Carolina blue signature golf cart. He had fun with his group during the first day of the tournament, including daring one of his teammates to jump into the water at the 18th hole. His teammate willingly dove in which left the legend, along with the crowd, laughing hysterically. Throughout the day, Jordan bantered with fans on the course. One fan asked who he was taking in the Final Four to which he replied, “Wisconsin!”
  • Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald chest-bumped his teammates after making a 35-foot putt midway through his Thursday round and finished the day with an eagle on 18 to win Day One.
  • As Stuart Scott teed off on the first hole, a fan yelled from the crowd, “Cool as the other side of the pillow!,” referencing one of Scott’s famous SportsCenter catchphrases.
  • On Brandi Chastain’s 9th hole of the day, her second shot on the par 5 flew the green and hit a rake on the side of a sand trap. The ball bounced backwards onto the green and rolled into the hole for an amazing two. The crowd went nuts and Brandi pretended to take her shirt off, reminding fans of her infamous celebration after her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
  • Real Housewives of Orange County Star Gretchen Rossi took pointers from fiancé Slade Smiley before teeing off at the first hole. As Smiley approached the tee box, he was introduced as the “sixth housewife,” to which he replied, “It’s okay, I’m proud of it!” His first shot only went a few feet so he took a mulligan and made the crowd laugh by saying, “Now that’s how you start off the day!” Rossi later posed beside her results on the scoreboard, proud of her performance for the day.
  • After finishing his 18 holes of golf, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw his golf ball into the MJCI bleachers at Shadow Creek’s 18th hole. Earlier in the day, he was spotted throwing a football around with his teammates on the 15th hole.
  • In true rock star fashion, Adrian Young’s group rolled up to each hole blasting music from their golf carts, playing everything from LMFAO’s “Party Rock” to “Paint it Black” by the Rolling Stones. But as he entered his backswing during his second shot, two large geese flew right over him, squawking and altering the shot. “I felt you!” he yelled jokingly at the birds
