Shoppers will find thousands of Books, eBooks, DVD’s, CD’s, LP’s and more!

For lovers of packaged entertainment in all forms, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation’s Big Summer Book Sale is not to be missed. One of the best sales of the summer, this is your chance to stock up on summer reading, movies, music, and those unexpected treasures you might find in the stacks.

The sale will be held on July 5 and July 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and on July 7 from 10 a.m.  to 2 p.m. at the Sahara West Library located at 9600 West Sahara Avenue.

Books and materials are divided up into categories as follows: cookbooks, health, history, textbooks, autobiography, sports, travel, law, computer, art, music, self-help, diet, science, fiction, non-fiction, romance, teens and kids’ books, as well as DVDs, CDs, and LPs.

“We receive thousands of wonderful donations from the community,” Keiba Crear, president of the Library District Foundation, said. “This includes donations from people who are downsizing to smaller homes, estate book collections, public agencies such as consulates, and a local doctor who drops off beautiful new tabletop art books every month. We have a number of book sales throughout the year but our summer sale is by far our largest.”

Members of the public are sure to find amazing treasures and bargains galore on books, DVDs, CDs, LPs, and more, with some items discounted as low as 50 cents. All proceeds and donations go to fund new resources and priority projects for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District and Foundation, such as Teacher Tutors, Teen Tech Labs, and the new Nevada CareerExplorer.

According to Dr. Ronald R. Heezen, executive director of the Library District, the sale has long been a favorite of book collectors.

“You never know when a first edition, special collection, or signed author’s copy may pop up unexpectedly,” Dr. Heezen said. “Last year, one lucky customer discovered a signed copy of ‘Fortunately, The Milk’ by Neil Gaiman an award-winning British author. Gaiman is noteworthy as he is the first author to win both the Newberry Medal and the Carnegie Medal for the same work. The customer gasped when she found it and everyone around her said she had won the lottery!”

The Library District Foundation sponsors several other book sales during the year, including:

  • The Teacher’s Book Sale on Saturday, August 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Clark County Library, where teachers receive deep discounts in order to stock their shelves for the coming school year.

ART+ FASHION + PARTY + BENEFIT = THE ART OF THE PARTY II

Martin Lawrence Galleries at The Forum Shops at Caesars
Hosts Second Annual Art Of The Party on Saturday, July 20 at 7 p.m.

The world’s largest privately-owned art gallery, the Martin Lawrence Galleries at The Forum Shops at Caesars is showcasing its flagship 26,000 square foot gallery (Las Vegas’ home to the masters and the best of the contemporaries) to host the Art of The Party II – An Evening of Art and Fashion on Saturday, July 20 from 7 – 11 p.m. Celebrating its second anniversary in Las Vegas, Martin Lawrence is once again partnering with UMC’s Trauma and Burn Care Center and will donate 100% of the $25 ticket price to support the life-saving work of UMC’s Trauma and Burn Care Center, Nevada’s only Level 1 trauma facility. Tickets can easily be purchased online at www.theartoftheparty2.eventbrite.com.

With art ranging from Warhol to Chagall to Rembrandt, The Art of the Party II will celebrate the synergy between art and fashion; highlights of the event that is being produced by Mikey Koffman – producer of LA Fashion Week – include live and experiential fashion presentations featuring one-of-a-kind, pop-art inspired fashions created by celebrated stylist and costume designer Anthony Franco as well as artful music, a DJ, entertainment, food and drinks including The Art of Chocolate by Max Brenner -sampling and showcasing edible creations and sweet treats and The Art of Beauty presented by Sephora.

Also, a rare gathering of acclaimed artists including Philippe Bertho, Robert Deyber, Franҫois Fressinier, Kerry Hallam, Douglas Hofmann, Liudmila Kondakova, René Lalonde, Felix Mas and others will participate in the evening’s celebration.

“We are thrilled to once again be partnering with UMC on this annual event,” said Gallery Director Stacie Goulet. “Last year’s event was so well-received and such fun that we can’t wait to outdo ourselves this year. We are giving 100% of the ticket sales from the evening to UMC, so we are hoping we sell-out. This gallery is such a spectacular setting to showcase works of art for every level of collector and also makes for a great venue to throw a fantastic and creatively-inspiring event.”

“We are extremely grateful for our ongoing partnership with the Martin Lawrence Galleries,” said UMC CEO Brian Brannman. “A gallery of their caliber could choose to donate to a myriad of worthwhile organizations and the fact that they chose the UMC Trauma and Burn Care Center is incredible recognition for our caregivers who are dedicated to saving the lives of those who need us the most.”

Announcing P3Studio Artist-in-Residence Todd DiCiurcio

TODD DICIURCIO PRESENTS DRAW US SIN
April 24 – May 12, 2013
Hours: Wednesday – Sunday | 6 – 11PM

P3Studio
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas
3708 Las Vegas Boulevard South
Las Vegas, NV 89109

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, in partnership with Art Production Fund, announce artist-in-residence Todd DiCiurcio. While in P3Studio, DiCiurcio will transform the space into a working studio where he will draw performances live while they happen. Musicians, performers and guests will be able to sign up for an opportunity to perform a 1 hour set in P3Studio while DiCiurcio captures them on paper using a range of media. Each performer will have free reign to do whatever they please with their time slot and guests will be encouraged to experience each set. These visual recordings will be immediately displayed in P3Studio as they are finished. DiCiurcio’s process will involve the use of assemblage in order to build upon the environmental compositions as they are drawn, and later implemented. He will be inviting special guests to attend and perform from underground to well known acts, including The Men and BadBad. DiCiurcio’s objective is to depict live performances to showcase a dialogue between the visual work and the music, the outcome of which will expose the politics and progress of the current underground showcase.

New York based artist Todd DiCiurcio creates mixed media drawings that grasp the electric experience of the “live” musical performance. For over a decade as both an artist and a witness, he chose to depict the immediacy of modern culture by rendering the live performances of contemporary musicians through ink and graphite. His drawings are as spontaneous as the performances themselves, created in one continuous line. By rendering in visual language the temporality of music, DiCiurcio creates significant and poignantly energetic aesthetic compositions. His unchained use of lines produces spontaneous but at the same time highly elaborated images.

Throughout his career, DiCiurcio has documented numerous bands, including: Guided by Voices, Jane’s Addiction, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Bon Jovi, Kings of Leon, Dinosaur Jr., Bob Mould, Broken Social Scene, Exitmusic, Wyclef Jean, The English Beat, Grizzly Bear, The Killers, Angus Stone, MT Warning, The Rolling Stones, New Order, Cat Power, Guster and many others. Through live drawings that are dynamically rendered during the performance, his work grasps the spontaneity and progressive quality of events as they unfold.

The artist-in-residence program at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas represents one component of its larger art program, in which artists create projects that are interactive and participatory, giving guests the opportunity to connect at an authentic and personal level. Developed and curated in partnership with Art Production Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to producing ambitious public art projects, it strives to reach new audiences and expand awareness through contemporary art.

DEWEY STREET, FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND HOME FOR CRAFTING IN LAS VEGAS, OPENS DOORS

DEWEY STREET, FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND HOME FOR CRAFTING IN LAS VEGAS, OPENS DOORS

Family business is only in the area to offer wide variety of  crafting lessons and long arm quilting

Three generations of love for crafting are the foundation for the newly opened Dewey Street, a store that offers lessons and long arm quilting, on South Durango in Las Vegas. Dewey Street prides itself as the only single gathering place for “crafty creatives” in Southern Nevada. Courses and quilting will be led  by the three founders: Cindy Nickerson and her two daughters, Lindsay and Laurie. Dewey Street is also welcoming other craft experts to teach in the professional space. The business additionally offers “open studio” time when the general public may come in to work on crafts with the assistance of Dewey Street staff.

Dewey Street is launching with several types of lessons including: indie, textile and art. Indie covers a wide range of techniques including a “mash-up” of traditional lessons with a modern aesthetic, book binding and paper printing. Textile uses fabrics as a canvas with exploration including bleach printing, pattern design and fabric printing. Art blurs the lines between craft and art, and focuses more on self expression with projects including collage and decoupage.

Additionally, Dewey Street is offering several types of series. Examples include sewing, home and garden, and guest teacher, which brings experts from across the Las Vegas area to teach the skill or craft they know best, broadening the offerings of Dewey Street. This translates into Dewey Street constantly evolving and incorporating new and innovative methods to customers.

Lessons at Dewey Street reach all ages and ability levels. Instruction will appeal to everything from the contemporary crafting movement to traditional techniques. All people aged from child to senior will find a niche and class at Dewey Street, or may take advantage of the “open studio” time.

The name and foundation of Dewey Street find roots with 90-year-old Joan Faust who lived on Dewey Street in West Springfield, MA for nearly all of her life and raised a family as she literally turned trash into treasures. Her influence inspired daughter Cindy, and Cindy’s daughters, to launch the new business in Joan’s memory. The lessons they pass to the Las Vegas community are Joan’s legacy.

Founder Cindy Nickerson has been sewing almost all of her life and can perform nearly all forms of stitchery. The gifted seamstress also ran a successful embroidery business for nearly 25 years in Massachusetts. Cindy operates one of the largest professional grade long arm sewing machines in the area. Her service offers a speedy and professional alternative to work that is commonly done in homes and a level of perfection through state-of-the art computerized technology. The precise stitching creates a high-quality, yet personalized piece that will last for generations.

Cindy’s daughter Lindsay carries on the legacy of quilting and sewing. She is a mother of two (soon to be three) and brings innovation to crafting with small children. Lindsay also  has a green thumb, which morphed into a complementing talent of creating vintage spoon plant markers.

Laurie, Cindy’s other daughter, cannot sew a straight line. However, she offers balance to the women of her family with strong artistic talent. Laurie keeps busy with her day job as Art Director for a leading Las Vegas firm and teaching a course at the Art Institute. Surprisingly, she finds enough spare time to move the artsy side of Dewey Street in the right direction. Her skills include painting, assemblage, book binding and perhaps most fun of all, puppet making.

Dewey Street’s interior reflects Laurie’s artistic vision. Lessons are taught around antique tables and a close look at the chair cushions will reveal a pattern of the Dewey Street logo. The walls are a soft blue and hanging art was designed and framed by Laurie.

The owners also advance Joan’s legacy by helping the community. The last Sunday of every month, Dewey Street offers its space, knowledge and time to a non-profit organization.

Dewey Street, located at 2960 S. Durango Suite 111 in Las Vegas, is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday in addition to regularly scheduled class times and appointments. More information is available by going to www.dewey-street.com.

BOULDER CITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES FEATURED ARTIST FOR ITS 50TH ANNUAL ART IN THE PARK EVENT – October 6 & 7, 2012

BOULDER CITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES FEATURED ARTIST FOR ITS
50TH ANNUAL ART IN THE PARK EVENT – October 6 & 7, 2012

Robert Fleming has been named Featured Artist for the Boulder City Hospital Foundation’s 50th Annual Art in the Park event. Fleming, who hails from Bermuda Dunes, CA, paints in traditional watercolors inspired by Southwest settings comprised of blooming cactus and lush desert scenes. Half of these works are painted on location (plein air). Robert says “I tend to stay loser and throw paint around more when I’m outside.” His featured art “Quail in the Thicket” flawlessly embraces his style and medium.

Fleming’s experience began with a strong sense of design originating at his first job: designing cards, gift wraps and books for Hallmark. Early in his career Fleming was told, “Your designs must have ‘pick up’ appeal as it is strongly competing with all the other cards in the rack.”  During his first week with Hallmark, Fleming was exposed to a watercolor demonstration by the world famous artist John Pike and from that moment on he was hooked.  Robert relates, Mr. Pike said, “Your paintings need to entertain” and I’ve been entertaining for 50 years now. Recently Fleming has developed a passion for the historical side of Golf. Last summer Fleming work, based on the 1913 U.S. Open, was accepted into the Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, FL. Fleming’s popularity continues to grow as collectors and fans are drawn to his watercolors.  You can view Roberts’s work in booth #179-180 at this year’s Art in the Park event – right next to his wife’s (Nancy Lynn) acrylic paintings – taking place October 6th and 7th, 2012.  Please note: room is still available for artists!  Please call for special pricing to become part of this time-honored event.

Art in the Park is one of the largest outdoor juried art festivals in the Southwest.  The event features hundreds of original artists in the fine art, fine/contemporary craft and traditional craft categories.  The festival is Boulder City Hospital Foundation’s signature fundraising event.  Proceeds from the event benefit the Boulder City Hospital.

Art in the Park is free to the public and draws over 100,000 visitors to the Historic downtown area.  This year celebrate its 50th year of commitment by the local community in ensuring accessibility to premium health care to its residents and the greater Las Vegas Valley. Free parking is available throughout the city. Paid parking is available in the old Boulder City Airport parking lot with complimentary shuttle service taking visitors to the event. Artist applications, program advertisements orders, volunteer forms, photos, maps and additional information is available by visiting www.artinthepark.org.

2012 sponsors include, First Solar, SDG&E, Copper Mountain Solar, Century Link, Greenspun Media Group, Railroad Pass, HealthCare Partners, Stephens Media LLC, and Mix 94.1.

The Boulder City Hospital Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to raise funds for capital equipment and improvements to the non-profit Boulder City Hospital.
