Department earns highest single- and multi-year scores ever, a record 10 teams earn perfect single-year scores and five teams set or tie multi-year program marks

UNLV Athletics reported historic progress in the classroom, setting multiple NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) records as the national organization released its most recent data for the 2018-19 academic year Tuesday.

 

UNLV Athletics’ collective single- and multi-year scores of 990 and 979, respectively, are both record-highs. The single-year score of 990 qualifies UNLV for the academic-based revenue distribution that is available from the NCAA for the first time, allowing schools with higher graduation rates and academic success to qualify for more funds.

 

Additionally, a UNLV-record 10 teams earned a single-year perfect score of 1,000, eclipsing the previous mark of eight teams, which happened twice. The 10 programs with perfect 1,000s are baseball, women’s basketball, cross country, men’s golf, women’s golf, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, track and field and volleyball.

 

Also, baseball (978), football (964), men’s soccer (965), women’s tennis (1,000) and volleyball (1,000) all set or tied program records for multi-year scores.

 

“We are extremely proud of our student-athletes’ record-breaking APR performances,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “Thank you to Ann McDonough, Dean of the Academic Success Center, to our Student-Athlete Academic Services Department, and to all of our coaches and staff, for their continued commitment to the success of our student-athletes. These APR milestones and our record streak of 3.0 grade point averages are shining examples of how we continue to achieve academically.”

 

Women’s tennis and volleyball were both recognized last week with the NCAA’s Public Recognition Award by earning a multi-year APR of 1,000, putting each team in the top-10 percent of all squads in their respective sport. It marked volleyball’s third straight award and fourth overall, and it is the fourth overall for women’s tennis. To achieve a perfect multi-year score of 1,000, a program must be perfect in four consecutive years.

 

For the 12th consecutive year, all 17 of UNLV’s NCAA Division I sports programs possess a multi-year APR score that exceeds the NCAA minimum cut score of at least 930 to avoid penalties, with all Rebel teams posting a multi-year score this year of at least 952.

 

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and its goal is to provide a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. A score of 1,000 means that the institution has met the goals of retention and satisfactory degree progress for 100 percent of each of its student-athletes in a given time period. A score of 900 equates to 90 percent, 800 equals 80 percent, and so forth. The NCAA implemented the APR in 2003.

 

The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

Admission to Include Free Hand Sanitizer Made in The Underground’s Distillery

The Mob Museum, The National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, is prepared to reopen on Sunday, May 31, 2020, contingent on the State of Nevada and local authorities lifting general restrictions. As it resumes operations, the award-winning 501(c)3 nonprofit organization will have new public health protocols in effect, developed in accordance with Centers for Disease Control, Southern Nevada Health District guidelines and industry specific best practices, to ensure the well-being and safety of all staff and guests. In addition, the Museum will provide each guest with a complimentary bottle of FDA approved 80 percent ethanol liquid hand sanitizer, produced in the Museum’s distillery, for a limited time.

“We eagerly look forward to welcoming back our guests and we have taken the utmost care to ensure that they, along with our team members, can enjoy the safest possible Museum environment,” said Jonathan Ullman, president and chief executive officer, The Mob Museum. “Our commitment to preserving history, fostering public discourse, and providing enriching, one-of-a-kind experiences remains unchanged.”

In addition to existing sanitization procedures and health and safety protocols, the Museum announces the following policies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • All individuals will be required to wear face masks for the duration of their time inside the Museum, with exceptions made only at management discretion in situations where sufficient alternative precautions are possible. Upon entering the building, each guest will receive a complimentary face mask to use if one is not already in possession.
  • The Museum will limit entry to approximately one-third of its previous operating capacity, and individual exhibit spaces will have capacity levels kept to half of posted fire code.
  • Purchasing tickets in advance online or over the phone with selected dates and times will be strongly encouraged to manage capacity.
  • A wellness check process will be employed for all individuals entering the building to reduce the likelihood of preventable exposure. This will include temperature checks with no-contact scanners for all employees, volunteers, vendors and guests.
  • Included with every ticket purchased, for a limited time, each guest will be provided with a complimentary bottle of 80 percent ethanol hand sanitizer. Guests may also opt for complimentary gloves and a stylus for use on Museum interactives.
  • Exhibits throughout the Museum have been reconfigured to better manage guest flow and to reduce physical handling. In some cases, videos and interactives have been modified.

South Point Arena To Host the World’s Best Bull Riders IN The PBR Monster Energy Team Challenge, A closed-to-public competition, June 5 – 28

The competitions will be televised on CBS Sports Network and CBS Television Network

South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa has partnered with the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) to host 48 of the world’s top professional bull riders in the South Point Arena split into 12 teams and divisions, facing off until two teams remain to compete for the championship. The competitions each Friday and Saturday will be televised on CBS Sports Network with a “Game of the Week” broadcast on CBS Television Network each Sunday. Every night of competition will feature three “games,” where each game will comprise a head-to-head matchup of three riders from one team against three riders from another on the sport’s toughest bulls.

 

The first four weekends of the PBR Monster Energy Team Challenge at the South Point Arena in Las Vegas on June 5-28 will be closed-to-the-public using the safety protocols PBR debuted during three previous event weekends in April and May, including a scaled-down crew, medical testing, functional separation and social distancing.

South Point Arena hosts the PBR Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour Finals each year.

 

“After successfully holding closed events in Oklahoma that utilized a comprehensive wellness and safety plan now being reviewed by other leagues, we have added protocols to provide fans a secure place to enjoy a new exciting team format,” said PBR Commissioner Sean Gleason. “We want to thank our fans for their patience and cooperation, as well as our venue, city and state partners, including Governor Kristi Noem, for collaborating on these measures for bringing this new team tournament in front of fans in an environment they’ll be comfortable in.”

 

Every team will have played six regular season games after four weeks.  The teams with the top three records in each division will make the playoffs, with the regular season division champion earning a first round bye. Championship weekend – a single elimination bracket – will feature wild card matchups on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday, and Championship Sunday broadcast on CBS Television Network, with the consolation game on CBS Sports Network.

 

PBR’s most recent Unleash The Beast ticketed event for fans was in Little Rock March 6-7, 2020. When restrictions on mass gatherings from COVID-19 (Coronavirus) were put into place, PBR held closed-to-fans events for television in Georgia March 15-16, and at the Lazy E Arena in Oklahoma April 25-26 and May 9-10 with a comprehensive safety plan approved by three layers of government.

 

The PBR will announce in the coming weeks further competition details and rosters for The PBR Monster Energy Team Challenge, which will not offer individual riders’ points toward the 2020 world standings.

 

PBR will handle all production for these events, which are subject to change depending on developments with Covid-19.

WHAT:

Distill and Remedy’s will offer their full menu of American classics prepared by Executive Chef Jeff McCarthy to in-house dining guests. Diners can also enjoy the Slow-Smoked Rib Special (slow-smoked and finished on the grill with homemade BBQ sauce and served with baked beans and coleslaw) for $15.95.

In addition to reopening their doors for dine in, the restaurants offer two family meals for curbside pickup or delivery that serves four and starts at $39.95. The two family meal options include the choice of:

Bake-at-Home Lasagna – Family-style lasagna with fresh pasta, layered with Bolognese, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. Served with Caesar salad and garlic bread.

Vegas Baby Vodka executives and mother and son duo, Jennifer Higgins and Sam Richardson, will host a virtual happy hour broadcasted on the Yelp Las Vegas Instagram account, @Yelplv, at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 15.

 

Higgins and Richardson will demonstrate how to create two at-home cocktails, incorporating ingredients many people have at home, to create two signature cocktails: the Vegas Baby Spritz and Jenn’s Cosmo. The recipes for each are as follows:

 

Vegas Baby Spritz
1 oz. Vegas Baby Vodka
6 oz. Berry Spakling Lemonade
1.5 oz. Aperol
.5 oz. Lemon Juice
Orange wheel, for garnish
Strawberry slice, for garnish

 

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, until shaker is cold. Strain into a wine glass. Garnish with an orange wheel and  slice of strawberry. 

 

Jenn’s Cosmo
1.5 oz. Vegas Baby Vodka
1 oz. Lime Juice
1 oz. Cranberry Juice
.75 oz Simple Syrup
.5 oz. Cointreau
Lime wheel, for garnish

 

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice, until shaker is cold. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

PT’s Taverns will reopen six taverns for dining, curbside pickup and delivery through DoorDash at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19.

 

They include PT’s Gold at 7550 Oso Blanca Rd.: (702) 840-3884, Sierra Gold at 6515 S. Jones Blvd.: (702) 221-4120, Sierra Gold at 6929 N. Aliante Pkwy.: 702.899.4307, PT’s Gold at 9363 S. Nellis Blvd.: (702) 432-3348 and Sierra Gold located in Reno at 680 S Meadows Pkwy.: (775) 850-1112.  The six tavern locations will be open daily from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m.

 

Bar seating and gaming machines will not reopen at this time. In addition to following the guidelines set forth by the state, PT’s has created additional health and safety protocols for the health and safety of its guests and team members.

UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL’S 2020-21 NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

 

Runnin’ Rebels’ slate includes home games against UCLA and California, a trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational and road games at Kansas State, VCU and SMU

UNLV Athletics announced the non-conference portion of its 2020-21 men’s basketball schedule Wednesday.

Highlighted by home games against Pac-12 Conference members UCLA and California, a trip to Hawaii for the Maui Invitational and road contests at Kansas State, VCU and SMU, the Runnin’ Rebels can play up to six teams collectively from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten Conference, Big 12 Conference, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference.

The strongest non-conference schedule for the Runnin’ Rebels in five years (based on 2019-20 final NET Rankings), the upcoming slate is also an improvement over last year’s according to KPI, BPI, POM and SAG statistical rankings. UNLV will have an opportunity to play up to six Quadrant 1 or 2 games (also based on 2019-20 final NET Rankings). The last two seasons, UNLV played in just three games each vs. Quad 1 or 2 opponents.

“Our schedule will be challenging with high-level games at home, on the road and on a neutral court in Maui,” said UNLV head coach T.J. Otzelberger, who last season led the Runnin’ Rebels to their most Mountain West wins and highest league finish in 12 years by tying for second in his first year at the helm of the program. “Those are opportunities we will embrace as we continue to move our program forward.”

The Runnin’ Rebels’ 2020-21 season will begin with five straight games at the Thomas & Mack Center starting with an exhibition contest against Chaminade on Friday, November 6.

The regular-season opener will take place Tuesday, November 10 against Montana State followed by a visit from Cal on Saturday, November 14. It will mark the fifth time Cal has played at UNLV as the Runnin’ Rebels own a 3-1 all-time mark against the Golden Bears at home. UNLV will look to avenge its overtime loss last season in Berkeley, California.

The Runnin’ Rebels will host their most anticipated home game of the non-conference season on Tuesday, November 17 vs. UCLA. The Bruins finished second in the Pac-12 last season, just one game back of league champion Oregon. It will mark UCLA’s third visit to the Thomas & Mack Center and first since 1997. The Rebels played the Bruins in Westwood last November.

The season-opening homestand will conclude with a game against Benedictine Mesa on Friday, November 20 before heading to Hawaii.

The Maui Jim Maui Invitational will be up next, scheduled to be played Monday-Wednesday, November 23-25. One of the sport’s most prestigious events, this year’s field includes North Carolina from the ACC, Indiana from the Big Ten, Texas from the Big 12, Stanford from the Pac-12, Providence from the Big East Conference and Davidson from the Atlantic 10 Conference. Each of UNLV’s possible opponents in the event were ranked in the top 80 in last season’s final NET ranking.

UNLV’s appearance in the Maui Invitational will mark its first since 2015. The 2020 tournament field boasts a combined 214 NCAA Tournament appearances, 39 Final Four berths and 13 national championships.

The Runnin’ Rebels will return home to host Whittier College on Saturday, November 28, then head back on the road to take on VCU as part of the inaugural Mountain West-Atlantic 10 Challenge Series. It will mark the first meeting between the two programs.

UNLV will continue its road trip with a game at Kansas State on Saturday, December 5. It will mark just the Runnin’ Rebels’ second time playing at Bramlage Coliseum in Manhattan. UNLV hosted K-State last November, falling in overtime.

The Runnin’ Rebels then return home for their final homestand of the non-conference season vs. Florida A&M on Wednesday, December 16 and Omaha on Saturday, December 19.

The non-conference slate will conclude with a road game at SMU on Tuesday, December 22. It will mark UNLV’s first time playing at Moody Coliseum in Dallas since the two schools were both members of the Western Athletic Conference in 1999.

The Mountain West schedule will be announced at a later date. All game times and television appearances will be shared upon confirmation.
