UNLV Weekly Release

UNLV (8-3-1, 2-1-1 WAC) vs. Incarnate Word (5-5-0, 1-3-0 WAC)
Sunday, Oct. 18 – 1 pm – Las Vegas (Johann Memorial Field)
Live VideoLive Stats
Sunday’s game, against Incarnate Word, starts a key stretch for the Rebels as the following weekend they will host current co-leaders Seattle and Utah Valley, and wins over both could push UNLV to the top of the WAC.

UNLV is hoping that a return to its home field gives a spark to its play on offense. One of the top scoring teams in the nation a year ago, the Rebels have struggled as of late in the scoring column, with three-straight one goal contests. Their opponent this weekend have had scoring problems of their own, as the Cardinals have scored just once in the last three games, going into their Oct. 15 contest against Grand Canyon.

One player that has not had problems scoring is Las Vegas native Danny Musovski. The sophomore is tied for second in the nation with five game-winners, and even more impressively, four came in a five-game stretch, all to break a tie score, and two were in the final five minutes of the contest.

UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Lady Rebels Picked Sixth In MW Preseason Poll

UNLV
UNLV WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PICKED SIXTH IN MOUNTAIN WEST PRESEASON POLL

Lady Rebels bring back three starters from last season

The UNLV women’s basketball team was picked to finish sixth in the 2013-14 Mountain West preseason poll, which was released by the league office on Tuesday morning. Voting on the preseason poll, as well as the preseason all-conference team, were all 11 head coaches as well as select media members.

Colorado State, regular season champions a year ago, are this year’s preseason favorites with 276 points and 21 first place votes. Next was Boise State in second with four first place votes and 241 total points, and close behind was Wyoming in third with 235 points and the remaining three first place votes.  Fresno State, the 2014 MW Tournament champions, was picked fourth with 181 points, Nevada, Reno fifth with 155, and UNLV received 143 points for sixth place.

Rounding out the poll was San Diego State in seventh (134), Utah State eighth (123), just one point ahead of ninth-place New Mexico (122), San Jose State in 10th (81) and Air Force was in 11th place with 27 points.

The Lady Rebels tied for sixth last year with a 9-9 mark and were 13-19 overall. UNLV lost a pair of starters to graduation, including point guard Mia Bell who is now in her first year as an assistant coach on the Lady Rebel staff. The good news is that three starters do return for the 2014-15 campaign, including senior forward Alana Cesarz, an honorable mention All-MW selection last season, and wing Danielle Miller. The third starter is junior center Aley Rohde, in her second year as a Lady Rebel after spending her freshman season at Arizona. They will be joined by five more returnees and a five-member freshman class.
“The year we went to the postseason we were picked sixth,” said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. “So we feel sixth is a good spot for us, but it’s just a preseason prediction. In a conference this competitive anyone can win or they can finish in ninth or 10th.”

Wyoming senior forward Kayla Woodward was named the 2014-15 MW Preseason Player of the Year. She was joined on the preseason All-MW team by Colorado State sophomore guard Ellen Nystrom, Boise State senior guard Deanna Weaver, Fresno State senior Alex Sheedy and San Jose State senior guard Ta’Rea Cunnigan. San Diego State guard McKynzie Fort was selected as the Preseason Freshman of the Year, while Preseason Newcomer of the Year honors when to senior center Camille Redmon from Boise State, a transfer from Purdue.

Some of the highlights of the 2014-15 home slate including two double-headers with the Runnin’ Rebels in the Thomas & Mack Center. First up will be the season opener, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 14. The second game will come against Big 10 member Northwestern on Dec. 17. The annual Thanksgiving weekend tournament, the Lady Rebel Round-Up, will feature a field this year of South Dakota State, Northern Illinois and Delaware State, with games on Nov. 29 and 30. UNLV opens the Mountain West season at home on New Year’s Eve with a 2 pm contest against Wyoming.
UNLV season tickets are only $75 for 15 home games. For information on purchasing season tickets call 702-739-FANS or visit UNLVtickets.com. Youth 12 and under are free to all Lady Rebel games.

UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Runnin’ Rebels Ranked No. 1 In Mountain West, 14th In Nation For Home Attendance Last Season

UNLV

RUNNIN’ REBELS RANKED NO. 1 IN MOUNTAIN WEST, 14TH IN NATION IN HOME ATTENDANCE

UNLV men’s basketball was in the NCAA’s top 25 in home attendance for the fifth straight season in 2012-13

For the fifth straight year, the UNLV men’s basketball program has found itself among the nation’s top 25 in home attendance as the 2012-13 figures were released by the NCAA this week.

The Runnin’ Rebels’ home games last season had an average crowd of 15,196 (22 games/334,320 total fans), which ranked 14th in the country and No. 1 in both the Mountain West and among all programs on the West Coast (states of California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington). It is also the fifth straight season the program has earned top home attendance figures among those states.

In addition, UNLV’s games at the Thomas & Mack Center during the 2012-13 season had an average crowd of 15,678 (21 games/329,251), which was the program’s highest in 22 years (since the 1990-91 season). The Runnin’ Rebels’ game against La Verne at the Orleans Arena in December counted as a home game in the NCAA figures.

UNLV’s home crowds improved by an average of 1,171 fans per game from the 2011-12 season when the Runnin’ Rebels came in at No. 17 in the country. The 2012-13 season also saw an increase of 1,943 fans per game from two seasons ago (2010-11) when UNLV ranked 23rd in the country in home attendance.

The Runnin’ Rebels played in their fourth straight NCAA Tournament this past season and their sixth in the last seven years. Only 12 programs nationally have matched that and it is tops in the Mountain West over that span.

Head Coach Dave Rice led UNLV to another 25-win season in 2012-13 and the 51 wins by the program over the last two seasons is the most ever by a UNLV coach after his first two years leading the program (Jerry Tarkanian had 44 wins in his first two years).

UNLV, which won four games over ranked teams last year and ranked in the top-10 nationally in assists, rebounding and blocks, returns two starters and six players overall from last year. Nine new players are on the 2013-14 roster, including three that used their redshirt year while practicing with the team in 2012-13.
