Lee Greenwood to Star at 60th Anniversary Neewollah Concert with Added Attraction Kyle Dillingham, October 27 at Memorial Hall

The nine day Halloween themed festival will also feature the festival’s co-founder, Jim Halsey, as Grand Marshal of the Grand Parade on October 27

The Neewollah Festival will celebrate its 60th Anniversary from October 19-27, in downtown Independence, Kansas. The famous nine day Halloween themed festival will feature live theatrical productions, concerts, three different parades, 5K/10K fun runs, pageants, a carnival, a chili cook off, vendors, food and more.

Neewollah was revived into a multi-day celebration in 1958 by legendary music impresario and Independence, Kansas native, Jim Halsey, along with Jerry Webb, Bob Wohltman, and Don Dancer. The first Neewollah celebration actually dates all the way back to 1919 as an effort to provide positive activities for kids of all ages in place of the typical Halloween pranks that occurred in the community. In the beginning the events centered on parades of decorated cars and carriages during the morning, afternoon, and night on October 31.

In 1981 HBO produced a music special from Neewollah – also organized by Jim Halsey, Sherman Halsey, and directed by award winner Marty Calliner – starring Roy Clark, Merle Haggard, Ronnie Milsap, Johnny Lee, Charlie Rich and Lacy J Dalton. Other stars that have headlined the festival over the years have been Don Williams, Mel Tillis, BJ Thomas, Roy Clark, Oak Ridge Boys, Reba McEntire, Ray Price, and The Bellamy Brothers.

Today, Neewollah is the largest annual celebration in Kansas. The city of Independence will grow from a town of just under 10,000 inhabitants to 75,000 in the final days of the now 10-day celebration. Today’s celebration now includes 3 parades, a Doo Dah Parade (adult Kiddie Parade), a Kiddies Parade and a Grand Parade. Other activities include a chili cook-off, a hometown musical, and a queen’s pageant also adds to the festival activities. The main downtown is filled with a variety of food vendors, a large carnival and bandstand for nightly entertainment. The arts and craft show, the band competition, and the fun run provide activities for everyone.

The Neewollah Festival will conclude on Saturday, October 27 with the Grand Parade, featuring the festival’s co-founder Jim Halsey as the Grand Marshal, followed by a concert that evening with iconic Country music star, Lee Greenwood, along with Americana performer Kyle Dillingham at Memorial Hall. This will mark Lee Greenwood’s third appearance at the Neewollah Festival.

Grammy award winner Lee Greenwood has more than 30 albums to his credit, seven #1 songs, 25 charted singles, and a CMA Song of the Year award in 1985 for his most recognizable, and patriotic song, “God Bless the USA.” Other hits from him include “It Turns Me Inside Out,” “ Ring on her Finger Time on her Hands,” “She’s Lying,” “ I Don’t Mind the Thorns if You’re the Rose,” “Dixie Road,” “Somebody’s Gonna Love You,” “Going, Going Gone,” “You Got a Good Love Comin,” “Fools Gold,” and “ Mornin’ Ride.”

Also joining on the stage that evening will be Oklahoma’s official musical ambassador and fiddle extraordinaire, Kyle Dillingham and his band, Horseshoe Road. Dillingham is a classically trained fiddle player who first picked up a violin when he was just nine years old. Eight years later, he gave two featured performances at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Together, Dillingham and his band have represented America internationally in 37 countries. More recently, Dillingham was nominated by the National Endowment for the Arts to officially represent the United States in the NEA’s American Music Abroad program, and performed at the NEA’s awards banquet in Washington D.C. on September 28. This rare opportunity was a huge honor as Kyle Dillingham also paid homage to famed clothing designer, Manuel Cuevas at the ceremony. Kyle, who often wears suits designed by Manuel on stage has formed a friendship and deep respect for Manuel since their first visit together. On stage, Dillingham performs a mix of his band’s original songs, along with classic covers and fiddlin’ favorites that are sure to have audiences on their feet.

About Neewollah Festival:
The Neewollah (“Halloween” spelled backwards) celebration began in 1919 as an effort to provide positive activities for kids of all ages in place of the typical Halloween pranks that occurred in the community of Independence, Kansas. In the beginning the events centered on parades, morning, afternoon, and night on October 31. The parades consisted mainly of decorated cars and carriages. Queens and princesses from area festivals rode in the parades, along with their own Queen Neelah who was selected based on votes bought at a penny each. The Great Depression and World War II interrupted the Neewollah celebration but in 1958 four businessmen revived and elaborated on the Neewollah theme bringing it back as a 3-day celebration featuring big-name music and recording stars.

Celebrate Labor Day Weekend with a Free Concert by KANSAS and Special Guest BLUE OYSTER CULT
at Fremont Street Experience

Rock of Vegas Summer Concert Series concludes Sunday, September 6

Fremont Street Experience’s Rock of Vegas 2015 summer concert series will conclude this Labor Day weekend with a free concert on Sunday, September 6 at 9 p.m. featuring Kansas and special guest Blue Oyster Cult performing on the 3rd Street Stage. Every May through September, Fremont Street Experience transforms Downtown Las Vegas into the hottest place to be with the annual Rock of Vegas summer concert series; one of the most popular summertime events in Las Vegas featuring rockin’ nightly entertainment, free headliner concerts and Viva Vision shows.

Kansas
Kansas has spent than four decades as a part of the soundtrack of the lives of multiple generations. The band has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of KANSAS), one platinum live album (Two for the Show) and a million-selling gold single, “Dust in the Wind.” Kansas appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the ’70s and ’80s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. “Carry On Wayward Son” was the #2 most played track on classic rock radio in 1995 and went to #1 in 1997. The band, which is currently comprised of original drummer Phil Ehart, bassist/vocalist Billy Greer, keyboardist David Manion, vocalist/keyboardist Ronnie Platt, violinist/guitarist David Ragsdale, and original guitarist Richard Williams, continues to perform in front of large and enthusiastic audiences around the world.

Blue Oyster Cult
For over four decades, Blue Oyster Cult has been thrilling fans of intelligent hard rock worldwide with powerful albums loaded with classic songs. The band from Long Island, NY is revered within the hard rock and heavy metal scene for its pioneering work. Blue Oyster Cult occupies a unique place in rock history because it’s one of very few hard rock/heavy metal bands to earn both genuine mainstream critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Upon the release of BOC’s self--titled debut album in 1972, the band was praised for its catchy yet heavy music and lyrics that could be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song. BOC’s hits include “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” from 1976’s Agents of Fortune, the pummeling “Godzilla” from 1977’s Spectres and the hypnotically melodic “Burnin’ for You” from1981’s Fire of Unknown Origin. BOC still maintains a relentless touring schedule that brings new songs and classics to fans from all over.

KC and The Sunshine Band
KC and The Sunshine Band are still as widely popular today as they were when they first danced into the music scene 40 years ago. Harry Wayne Casey – KC for short – developed a unique fusion of R&B and funk, with a hint of a Latin percussion groove, giving us an impressive string of hits like “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s The Way (I Like It)” and “Shake Your Booty.” With sales of over 100 million records, nine Grammy nominations, three Grammy Awards and an American Music Award, KC and The Sunshine Band was one of the most progressive bands of the ’70s and is credited with changing the sound of modern pop music.

Tonic & Vertical Horizon
Multiple Grammy-nominated Tonic’s hit, “If You Could Only See,” was a highlight of the group’s platinum-selling album, Lemon Parade. Alt rock favorites Vertical Horizon has had a slew of hits including “You’re a God,” “Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)” and “Everything You Want.”

Martha Davis and The Motels, The Tubes & The Smithereens
You’d be hard-pressed to find any compilation of ’80s hits that doesn’t include songs by these popular groups. Some favorites include “Only the Lonely” from Martha Davis and The Motels, “Talk to Ya Later” from The Tubes, featuring Fee Waybill, and “A Girl Like You” from The Smithereens.

Smash Mouth & Toad the Wet Sprocket
American rock band Smash Mouth is perhaps best known for their hits, “Walkin’ in the Sun” and “All Star,” featured in numerous movie soundtracks. Alt Rock’s Toad the Wet Sprocket have a string of chart-topping hits including, “Walk on the Ocean,” “Something’s Always Wrong” and “All I Want.”

Theory of a Deadman
Canadian rockers Theory of a Deadman formed in 2001 and have had seven Top 10 hits. Their biggest radio success came from 2008’s Scars & Souvenirs. Their hits include “So Happy,” “Bad Girlfriend” and “Not Meant to Be.”

Spin Doctors and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
Spin Doctors are best known for two hits with irresistible melodies, “Two Princes” and “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong.” Cherry Poppin’ Daddies rose to the forefront of the neo-swing movement with their two million-selling “Zoot Suit Riot.”

Kansas & Blue Oyster Cult
Kansas has scored eight gold albums, three sextuple-platinum albums and a platinum live album as well hits like “Carry On Wayward Son” and the timeless “Dust in the Wind.” Blue Oyster Cult has sold more than 24 million albums worldwide since their debut in 1972. Some of their most memorable songs include “Godzilla,” “Burnin’ for You” and “Don’t Fear the Reaper.”

WHO:
Kansas

WHAT:
Kansas has been selling out concert halls well before many current rock bands were born and the band has been spreading the love for American rock music ever since. After becoming popular in the 1970’s the band has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-platinum albums, one platinum live album and a million-selling single, “Dust in the Wind”. Another classic that topped the charts was the popular “Carry On Wayward Son” which was the second-most-played track on classic rock radio in 1995 and No. 1 in 1997. The bands mix of American-style boogie rock and complex, symphonic arrangements with changing time signatures has created a fan following that seems to stand the test of time. The band has endured member additions and departures but has continued to pump out hits and tour the country. True Kansas fanatics have been parading behind the band for the last 40 years and there has finally come a time for those to see the legendary rock group in Sin City itself, Las Vegas, Nevada. Veil Pavilion inside Silverton Casino will be hosting Kansas and their signature sound on Thursday, March 19 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are starting at $25. All ages show, guests under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

The 2014-15 UNLV men’s basketball Mountain West schedule was announced Wednesday by the athletics department. As part of the announcement dates and television coverage on ESPN networks and CBS Sports Network were included. Game times and any other television appearances will be announced as they are confirmed.

Seventeen of UNLV’s 18 conference games have been selected for ESPN networks or CBS Sports Network. The Runnin’ Rebels will have 10 MW games on CBS Sports Network and seven on ESPN networks (ESPNU or ESPN3). It is also possible that some games may still be shifted from Wednesday to Tuesday or Saturday to Sunday for television purposes. Any such changes will be announced.

The Runnin’ Rebels will open their MW schedule this season on Wednesday, Dec. 31 at Wyoming, then will play their final non-conference game of the season at Kansas on Sunday, Jan. 4 before opening the home portion of conference play on Wed., Jan. 7 against Nevada, Reno at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV’s game at Nevada, Reno does not yet have a set date. It will be played on either Tuesday or Wednesday, Jan. 27 or 28.

UNLV’s one-time opponents for the 2014-15 conference season are Colorado State (will not host the Rams) and Fresno State (will not play the Bulldogs on the road). The Runnin’ Rebels’ bye date will be on Wednesday, Feb. 4. UNLV will play at Kansas instead of having a second bye date.

The MW Championship will once again be held at the Thomas & Mack Center on UNLV’s campus, running this year from March 11-14.

UNLV’s non-conference schedule was released in June. Three of those games have been picked up by ESPN networks or CBS networks and are: vs. Utah on Saturday, Dec. 20 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN2 at 8:30 p.m. PT), vs. Arizona at home at the Thomas & Mack Center on Tuesday, Dec. 23 (CBSSN) and at Kansas (CBS).

The Runnin’ Rebels recorded an overall mark of 20-13 last season and have a streak of 20 or more wins in each of the last eight years.

This year’s team welcomes eight new players to the 2014-15 roster. The 2014 recruiting class has been ranked as the fourth-best in the country by Rivals.com, only behind Duke, Kentucky and Arizona, and ahead of North Carolina, Louisville, Kansas, UCLA, Georgetown and Maryland.

“RAIDING THE ROCK VAULT,”
‘Classic Rock By Those Who Rocked It!’
SIGNS GROUNDBREAKING LONG TERM AGREEMENT
TO CONTINUE IN 2014 AT THE
LVH – LAS VEGAS HOTEL & CASINO

The LVH – Las Vegas Hotel & Casino is excited to announce that its spectacular show, “Raiding the Rock Vault,” has signed a long term agreement to continue through 2014.

“Raiding the Rock Vault” opened in March 2013 and has consistently received critical and audience acclaim, as well as having been rated Vegas’ #1 Show.  The show will reopen on January 24, 2014.

“The LVH is beyond thrilled to have “Raiding the Rock Vault” continue in 2014,” said LVH Vice President of Entertainment, Rick White.  “The show promises to only get bigger and better this year with new cast members, songs and guest stars.  We truly believe it’s going to continue to be known as THE must-see show for visitors and locals alike.”

“We are honored to bring this incredible musical extravaganza back to the legendary stage which was the home of long term residencies by Elvis Presley, Liberace and Barry Manilow, as well as concert performances by many of the top rock, pop and country artists of all time,” said “Raiding the Rock Vault” producer Sir Harry Cowell.

This amazing concert experience brings the history of rock ‘n’ roll to life with an all-star super group of musicians the likes of which is not seen anywhere in Las Vegas.  The legendary classic rock songs of the `60s, `70s and `80s that everyone immediately recognizes – anthems for a generation – are played with stunning accuracy by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Howard Leese [Guitar] (Heart), sensational guitar player Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), phenomenal vocalists John Payne [Lead Vocals and Bass] (Asia), Robin McAuley [Lead Vocals] (MSG, Survivor), Paul Shortino [Lead Vocals] (Rough Cutt, Quite Riot), Andrew Freeman [Lead Vocals and Guitars] (Lynch Mob, The Offspring), extraordinary drummer Jay Schellen (Badfinger, Asia), and keyboard whiz Michael T. Ross (Lita Ford Band).  In addition to this unbelievable roster of rock musicianship, rotating special guests will continue to be a part of the show.  Previous special guests included Lou Gramm, original lead singer of Foreigner, Bobby Kimball, original lead singer of Toto, founding member and lead singer of Yes, Jon Anderson, and Mickey Thomas of Starship.

The show itself revolves around the “Rock Vault,” a giant capsule found in the distant future and opened to reveal the history of classic rock.  Entertaining vignettes by actors, narration by acclaimed actor Richard Malmos, and historical videos on giant screens help move the story through time.  The show is, of course, highlighted by electrfying performances of rock classics from The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Free, The Eagles, Queen, Boston, Kansas, U2, Van Halen, AC/DC, Foreigner, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Supertramp, and many, many more.

Written by musician, producer and vocalist, John Payne (Asia), and Grammy Award-winning record producer David Kershenbaum (Joe Jackson, Tracy Chapman, Supertramp) “Raiding the Rock Vault” was born to give audiences an illuminating look at the history of rock and, for those who lived it, an exciting trip down memory lane.

“Raiding the Rock Vault” will be performed Friday through Tuesday nights weekly (schedule subject to change) beginning January 24 at 8 p.m. in the LVH Theater.  Ticket prices for “Raiding the Rock Vault” range from $49 to $70 plus taxes and fees. UNLV MEN’S BASKETBALL NEWS: Runnin’ Rebels And Kansas To Play Home-And-Home Series Starting In 2014-15

UNLV

UNLV AND KANSAS TO PLAY HOME-AND-HOME SERIES

Runnin’ Rebels and Jayhawks will face each other in men’s basketball starting in 2014-15

UNLV and Kansas have agreed to play a home-and-home series in men’s basketball starting in the 2014-15 season, officials from each school announced Thursday.

UNLV will visit Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan., for a game during the 2014-15 campaign, and then Kansas will play at the Thomas & Mack Center during the 2016-17 season.

“We are very excited to start this series with Kansas,” UNLV head coach Dave Rice said. “Kansas has one of the most successful, storied programs in college basketball history. Adding the Jayhawks to our schedule is consistent with our philosophy of playing a very competitive nonconference schedule.”
