Golden Rainbow Continues to Support and Assist the HIV/AIDS Community
by Raising More Than $265,000 and Helping More Than 500 Clients in 2012
Local nonprofit provides shelter and direct financial assistance including utilities, transportation, medical and dental necessities to those impacted by HIV/AIDS in Southern Nevada

Local nonprofit Golden Rainbow raised $265,793 and helped over 500 clients in Southern Nevada in 2012. Continuing its mission, the organization provided assistance to those affected by and infected with HIV/AIDS as well as spread education and awareness about the disease. The nonprofit collected nearly $40,000 more compared to the previous year. As a result of the successful 2012 fundraising efforts, Golden Rainbow provided 8,184 nights of shelter, 527 days of utility assistance, 1,054 days of transportation and medical and dental assistance to more than 500 households.

“Our community is full of so many passionate, loyal volunteers and donors, and we can’t thank them enough for the amazing impact they’ve had,” said Lea Carrasco-Zanini, executive director of Golden Rainbow, “We really appreciate the continued support from Southern Nevada and once again look forward to helping better the lives of those affected by HIV and AIDS in 2013.”

Leading the fundraising efforts, “Ribbon of Life” drew a record-setting crowd of 1,630 at its premiere performance in The Smith Center for the Performing Arts collecting more than $200,000, topping the previous year by $40,000. Memorable performances included “Rhythm Of Life” by Phantom – The Las Vegas Spectacular, “Circle of Life” by children’s group Broadway in The Hood, “Rock of Ages” by the famous Las Vegas Tenors, “Suite From Porgy and Bess” by Clint Holmes and more. The nationally touring company of WICKED came together to raise $81,000 for Golden Rainbow and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) with “THE WICKED ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.” The special production was part of an ongoing series of performances throughout the country to support charitable causes.

Longtime supporter RagTag Entertainment hosted several benefit productions including “Take off With Us,” Steven Sondheim’s musical “COMPANY” and a Holiday Cabaret featuring performers from “Bite,” “FANTASY,” “Nunsense,” “HAIR” and “5th Avenue.” The various benefits generated more than $24,000 for the nonprofit.

Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino provided financial support last year for its second consecutive year. The center held a month-long fountain fundraiser in December 2012 for Golden Rainbow. In addition, Miracle Mile Shops and Golden Rainbow teamed up for the 2nd Annual Holiday Lights Drive to help brighten the season for the nonprofit’s Affordable Housing clients whom are unable to afford décor. “The world-wide phenomenon WICKED has been a fan favorite and it is only fitting that it will open our Broadway Las Vegas series,” said Myron Martin, president and CEO of The Smith Center. “WICKED truly offers guests world-class entertainment and we are thrilled to bring a successful Broadway production to the residents of Southern Nevada.”

WICKED, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Disney’s Enchanted, Academy Award® winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt) and book by Winnie Holzman (“My So Called Life,” “Once And Again” and “thirtysomething”), is based on the best-selling 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire. WICKED is set to make its Las Vegas premiere starting August 29.

The musical is directed by two-time Tony® Award winner Joe Mantello (Take Me Out, Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Vagina Monologues) and features musical staging by Tony® Award winner Wayne Cilento (Aida, The Who’s Tommy, How To Succeed…). WICKED, winner of 35 major awards, including a Grammy® Award and 3 Tony® Awards, is the untold story of the witches of Oz.  It is produced by Marc Platt, Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

Long before Dorothy drops in, two other girls meet in the land of Oz.  One – born with emerald green skin – is smart, fiery and misunderstood.  The other is beautiful, ambitious and very popular.  WICKED tells the story of their remarkable odyssey, how these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

WICKED features set design by Tony®  Award winning Eugene Lee (Ragtime, Show Boat, Candide, Sweeney Todd), costume design by Tony® winner Susan Hilferty (Spring Awakening, Into the Woods, Assassins), lighting design by Tony® nominee Kenneth Posner (Tony® Award winner for The Coast of Utopia, Hairspray) and sound design by Tony Meola (The Lion King). Stephen Oremus is the show’s music director. Orchestrations are by William David Brohn, with dance arrangements by James Lynn Abbott.

WICKED has “cast quite a spell” (Washington Post) throughout North America, breaking box office records in every city that it has played, including Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Philadelphia and Boston to name a few.

Called “a cultural phenomenon” by Variety, WICKED continues to thrill audiences around the world. There are currently seven productions of WICKED worldwide: New York; London; Japan; Holland; Australian/Asian Tour; and two concurrent North American National Tours.
