AS COLOR COMMENTATOR LIVE ON NBC UNIVERSO
Pro wrestling icon and former MMA star to call the action  for live event series beginning
Thursday, Sept. 17 at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT
at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center
Combate Americas, the first U.S. Hispanic Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) sports franchise in history, announced that it has brought former, four-time WWE champion and MMA star Alberto El Patron a.k.a. Alberto Del Rio on board to serve as a color commentator for its highly-anticipated “Road To The Championship” live event series, sponsored by Yaveo. The event kicks off on NBC Universo on Thursday, September 17 at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT from the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center in Las Vegas.
El Patron, whose real name is Jose Alberto Rodriguez, will call the action inside the Combate Americas cage, or “La Jaula,” on each Thursday night, two-hour, live NBC Universo telecast produced by Combate Americas, as part of its new, multi-year agreement with the NBC sports and entertainment cable television network for Latinos in the U.S.
“I am thrilled to be a part of Combate Americas and bring MMA to a new group of fans – Hispanics,” said El Patron, who remains the only wrestler to win the WWE’s coveted Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank contests in the same year (2011).
Campbell McLaren, Combate Americas CEO and UFC Co-Founder, said, “We are excited to have Alberto El Patron, one of the premier athletes and most charismatic personalities in the sport of professional wrestling, as well as a proven MMA competitor, with us on television for this historic live fight series.”
The son of famed Luchador “Dos Caras,” El Patron, a native of San Luis Potosi, Mexico who resides in San Antonio, Texas, is a former member of the Mexican national Greco-Roman wrestling team and a medalist at the Pan American Games. During his four-year tenure with the WWE, El Patron tussled with a host of rival name competitors and champions include CM Punk, Rey Mysterio, Big Show, The Miz, Sheamus, Dolph Ziggler, Jack Swagger and Matt Hardy. As an MMA fighter, El Patron holds a career record of 9-5, with all of his victories having come by way of (T)KO or submission.
Priced from just $14.99, tickets for the Combate Americas “Road To The Championship” kick-off event, which will take place during Mexican Independence Day celebration week, are available for purchase by phone: 800-745-3000, and online at Ticketmaster.com.
In the welterweight (170 pounds) main event, fast-rising star Ozzie Alvarez (6-2) of Huntington Beach, Calif. will square-off with undefeated, finisher Justin “The Tactician” Patterson (5-0) of Dallas, Texas.
In a 140 pound catchweight co-main event featuring two ferocious talents, John “Sexy Mexy” Castaneda (7-2) of Mankato, Minn. will battle former U.S. Marine Justin “The Therapist” Governale (5-2) of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.
Also on the fight card that night will be Combate Americas reality series star and unbeaten professional boxer Ricky “El Gallero” Palacios (3-1) of Mission, Texas, who will face Benji “The Brawler” Gomez (4-4) of Ventura, Calif. in a bantamweight (135 pounds) matchup
.
Urijah Faber-protégé Erick Sanchez (4-2) of Sacramento, Calif. will collide with Guatemala native “Ruthless” Rudy Morales (3-2) of Las Vegas at featherweight.
In a featured women’s strawweight (115 pounds) bout, Invicta FC veteran Nicdali “The Night Queen” Rivera-Calanoc (8-8) of Tulsa, Okla. will collide with power puncher Kyra Batara (2-3) of Las Vegas.
Unbeaten prospect Irvin Veloz (3-0) of Boca Raton, Fla. will meet fellow rising star Jay Pressley (4-1) of Milwaukee, Wis. in a 128 pound catchweight contest.
A three-bout preliminary card featuring several Las Vegas and Southern Calif. prospects will precede the live, five-bout NBC Universo telecast, and will stream live on Yaveo, the Spanish-language over-the-top streaming entertainment service from DIRECTV, now part of the AT&T family, that is also the title sponsor of the Combate Americas “Road To The Championship” live event series.

UFC President Dana White closed out the episode by announcing the two semifinal match ups, which will air next Friday, May 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

First, James Vick (#5 Cruz) will face-off against Michael Chiesa (#5 Faber) while Pichel (#6 Cruz) will meet Al Iaquinta (#1 Faber).

UFC President Dana White:
“Pichel vs Saunders was a grinder match. It was a close first round. It could have gone either way. Then in the second round, Pichel just took over. There was no doubt he won that round and deserved the win.”

“I didn’t know what to expect of Iaquinta vs Ogle. There’s no doubt Ogle came to fight, he’s got a great chin and a big heart. But Iaquinta looked good. He looked as good as anyone has ever looked on the Ultimate Fighter.”

“So now, we’re going into the semifinals and it’s dead-even. I have to tell you, I think Pichel’s a tough guy but we just saw what Iaquinta can do. And then there’s Vick, the incredible underdog and Chiesa, the guy who has gone through more than anyone in this house. You won’t want to miss these fights.”

Vinc Pichel:
“I knew to expect a lot of hard leg kicks, just thinking CHECK THAT SHIT AND FIRE! I practiced a lot of movement in this week’s training to keep him on his heels so he couldn’t throw them as often. Certain combinations worked really well for me, and I was able to take him out of his comfort zone.”

Team Cruz Coach – Dominick Cruz:
“Pichel listened perfectly to the game plan, which was to keep Saunders on his heels, throwing heavy shots, which takes away Saunders’ kicking ability and forces him to box.  This allowed Pichel to dirty box and clinch and grind out the win.”

Thoughts on Barao fighting for the Interim belt: “It’s a tough thing to chew on to pass up a spot I’ve worked so, so hard for. It’s testing my heart and determination in this situation.  This will prove and test to myself the integrity I have and make me a stronger champion.”

Al Iaquinta:
“I fought smart, I knew if I fought smart I could beat just about anybody.”

Team Faber Coach – Urijah Faber:
“I’m not surprised by the outcomes. Things went as predicted. Saunders losing the first round was a big surprise. I thought he won hands down. Al looked awesome he stalked Ogle down.”

Thoughts on his new opponent: “I’m just excited to have a new opponent. Now that I have someone to focus on and game plan, for it gets me motivated. [My training] will definitely change. [Cruz and Barao] are polaropposites. Barao is a guy that starts hard, and looks for the finish right away, but seems to fade a little bit as the fight goes on. Dominick is really tricky, has great conditioning and is always looking to out point in a longfight. I’m a good combination of those two put together, I’m dangerous and I thrive in long fights.”

SERIES TIED ONCE AGAIN AS VINC PICHEL
SUBMITS JOHN COFER

The Ultimate Fighter® Live episode 7 – ‘Weather the Storm’ – aired Friday evening and saw Team Cruz snap a three fight losing streak to clinch their third win and even the score at three-all, as Simi Valley’s Vinc Pichel defeated Athens, Georgia native John Cofer.

‘From Hell Pichel’ blazed into the sudden victory round, submitting the southern gentleman after 44 seconds with an arm triangle. He now moves into the quarterfinals along with previous winners: James Vick, Justin Lawrence, Al Iaquinta, Michael Chiesa and Joe Proctor.

With the win, Team Cruz selected the next fight, which will pit Sam Sicilia against Chris Saunders on Episode 8, Friday, April 27 at 10p.m. ET / PT on FX.

Here’s what everyone had to say about the evening’s live fight:

UFC President Dana White:
“The fight that happened tonight showed me that both of these guys want to be here and they want it bad. Those guys never stopped battling, it was an absolute war and that is what I love to see! The judgescalled it right tonight. I gave the first round to Cofer and the second round to Pichel. It needed the sudden victory round and these guys didn’t disappoint. I’m so happy with both guys’ performance.”

Vinc Pichel:
“I feel like I am on top of Mount Everest right now, sucking in beautiful air. Honestly I feel so much better about that type of win, I wouldn’t have wanted it to be an easy one-sided battle. I feel like a have a bigger sense of accomplishment winning the way I did. I got hit in that fight more than I have in my whole pro career – and I didn’t like it. Now I need to rest-up, heal, and then when it comes time to fight, I’ll be there, I’ll be ready.”

Pichel’s Coach Dominick Cruz:
“I’m really proud of Pichel. He listened flawlessly. He dug deep and came out on top. He showed how bad he wants this competition in that fight. That’s the type of fight that will prepare him for his bright future in the UFC.
“I chose Sicilia/Saunders because I believe Sicilia’s wrestling and pace can give Saunders a lot of trouble. The importance of this fight is letting Sam fight like Sam.”

John Cofer:
“Hats off to Vinc Pichel. Hell of a fighter. Sorry I couldn’t come through. I just gotta keep working. This experience is only making me stronger. I’m down but not out. Thanks to all of those that support.”

Cofer’s Coach Urijah Faber:
“I was inspired after that fight. I feel like the big difference was just a mental decision that Pichel made. He brought the intensity to the next level. You can’t teach that. I’m proud of Cofer. He has a great future in the sport.”

“[Sicilia vs Saunders] was the fight we were going to pick. Saunders has potential to beat anybody, we just need to get his head in theright spot and make sure he has his A-game ready.”

Next week’s fighter Sam Sicilia:
“I feel awesome. I’ve been waiting for this. I’m ready to perform. I’ve taken a lot of steps since I’ve been here and now I’m ready to put it on display against a very tough opponent. As always, I’ll fight faithful and fearless. I can’t promise a victory but I can promise a brutal fight.”

Next week’s fighter Chris Saunders:
“I’m excited. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’m geared and ready to go. I feel strong and healthy. I would like to thank God because without him none of this would be possible. Now I feel like it’s truly my time and I’m excited for this.”

TEAM FABER TAKES THE LEAD AS JOE PROCTOR SUBMITS CHRIS TICKLE

The Ultimate Fighter® Live episode 6 – “Dog With No Bark” – aired Friday evening and saw Team Faber continue to roll – right into the leaders spot – as they recorded their third consecutive win and took a 3-2 lead over Team Cruz.

Massachusetts native Joe Proctor came away with the win as he submitted resident badboy Chris Tickle by rear naked choke at 4:42 of the 1st round.

With the win, Team Faber selected the next fight, which will pit John Cofer against Vinc Pichel on Episode 7, Friday, April 20 at 10 p.m. ET / PT on FX.

Here’s what everyone had to say about the evening’s live fight:

UFC President Dana White:
“Great finish! In the first round, I actually had Tickle picking him apart. He hit Proctor with some big shots and Proctor ate some solid punches. Then, Tickle goes down and Proctor took his back, put his hooks in and secured that choke.

“I thought Joe looked good but it looks like he’s going to need a lot of stand-up work. If he faces a guy in this competition that hasbetter stand-up and better Jiu Jitsu, he’s in trouble.”

Joe Proctor:
“Tickle’s tough. I didn’t want to come in and extend and get caught with something stupid. We had a good game plan to weather the storm for the first half and if a takedown was there, take it. I took it and I finished my fight.”

Proctor’s Coach Urijah Faber:
“I’m excited. These guys have been working their butts off. The goal with Proctor was to weather the storm. Tickle comes out firing with big punches, we knew that going in. Reckless abandonment. Proctor is a little slower, more poised and is a stud. We told him he had to make it through the two-and-a-half minute mark, and after that it’s your fight.

“All these match-ups coming up are going to be pretty tough. So we went with a match-up that pitted two guys with different styles. Pichel is a dangerous fighter for sure. He’s got a real strong mental game, I can tell by talking to him. Cofer’s really strong also. He’s a south paw and he’s a wrestler and that’s Pichel’s weakness.”

Chris Tickle:
“I stuck to my game plan. I knew he was going to try and wrestle and take me down. I heard my corner telling me to get away from the cage. Ithought I was far enough away – but I wasn’t. I made a mistake and didn’t listen to my corner well enough and he capitalized on it. It sucks. I was winning the fight and working hard. I’m so sorry. I put all this work and this effort coming into this fight and I failed. I’m still learning and hopefully next time I’ll get the W.”

Tickle’s Coach Dominick Cruz:
“I’m pissed off because Tickle shouldn’t have lost that fight. He was winning. He was beating the hell out of the dude. It comes down to practice. It comes down to what you do in practice, is what you do in a fight. When you take that 15 seconds off in practice, you take that 15 seconds off in a fight. That 15 seconds cost him the fight.

“That’s exactly the match I was going to choose after I thought we were going to win tonight. So, I’m happy with it. Pichel is an animal. Pichel listens. Pichel never quits. He never gets tired and he’s got a huge opportunity in front of him and he’s going to seize the opportunity.”

Next week’s fighter John Cofer:
“I can’t wait for next week. I’m not taking this fight lightly at all. I want to go in there and get the win. I’m looking for Team Faber to keep winning.”

Next week’s fighter Vinc Pichel:
“I’m pumped. I’m going to beat Cofer bad, you guys might feel sorry for him after what I am going to do to him. He is going to regret taking the fight. I’m going to do what I do best, kick his ass.”

AL IAQUINTA EARNS SPLIT DECISION WIN OVER MYLES JURY IN FIRST SUDDEN-
VICTORY ROUND OF THE SEASON

The Ultimate Fighter® Live episode 4 – “All The Pressure” – aired Friday evening and saw Team Faber get on the board, now trailing Team Cruz 2-1, as their first overall pick – Al Iaquinta – secured a split decision win over Myles Jury.

With the win, Team Faber selected the next fight, which will pit Michael Chiesa against Jeremy Larsen on Episode 5, Friday, April 6 at 10 p.m. ET / PT on FX.

Here’s what everyone had to say about the evening’s live fight:

UFC President Dana White:
“There were some exciting exchanges in the first and second round and I think the judges scored them perfectly. But when you go to a sudden-victory round it means you’re hanging in there by a thread. You need to go out there and kill it. I don’t think either guy went out there in that third round and looked like they wanted to win it. They just wanted it enough to win and just enough not to lose. Faber wanted that win bad. To finally regain control is big for him. They’re (Team Faber) back in the game – with a huge momentum shift.”

Al Iaquinta:
“I knew it wasn’t going straight to a decision and I had a feeling we were going to the sudden-victory round. To get the win is great! It’s crazy. It’s a whole new game now.

It was definitely a different routine getting ready for this fight. I’ve had the same guys helping me for every one of my pro fights. This team was great though and they did a good job getting me ready.”

Iaquinta’s Coach Urijah Faber:
“I feel great, especially for Al. These wins are really for the guys. This is Al’s dream and he fought his heart out. Jury is a guy with a great mentality and to beat a guy like that is awesome for Al’s resume. Hoping to keep the (Team Faber) streak alive. And it took a little pep out of Cruz’s step which is great!”

Myles Jury:
“I just feel like it’s a tough loss but it’s a great learning experience for me and I’ll be back better than ever. The decision is the way it is. I could sit here and say I won but that’s not how it came out. I’m going to go back and take a look at what I did and see how I can improve.”

Jury’s Coach Dominick Cruz:
“It was a tough close fight and a learning experience for Myles Jury but I’m proud of him because he never stopped fighting and he went for broke. And he made it through the training camp and that’s always the hard part.

I like the pick for next week. I’m good with it because, what he doesn’t know is that Jeremy has a history of fighting solid wrestlers.”

Next week’s fighter Michael Chiesa
“First and foremost, I want to congratulate Al and Myles on a great fight. I’m very thankful that Team Faber got the hammer back, cause that means now I can do what I came here to do and that’s to put on a show. Training has been great. I’m feeling healthy. I’m in good shape and all these good fights have been amping me up and getting me ready to scrap.”

Next week’s fighter Jeremy Larsen
“I feel fantastic. Super excited. I was talking to Dominick (Cruz), telling him I wanted to fight next anyway. Some guys like to finish fight’s, I like three-round wars. So tune-in and get ready for some great action.

Brave Chiesa decides to pursue TUF Live dream in wake of father’s passing

Vick KO’s Cruickshank in night’s lone fight

The Ultimate Fighter® Live coaches and bitter rivals Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber picked their teams this past week from the field of 16 finalists who won their elimination bouts to enter The Ultimate Fighter® Live House. Missouri native Justin Lawrence was the first overall selection by Team Cruz, while his teammate James Vick (5-0), of Fort Worth, Texas and Team Faber’s Daron Cruickshank (10-2), of Wayne, Mich., were slated to face off in the first fight of the night.

Episode 2 – “Embrace the War” – saw 16 victorious lightweights move into the House and begin their quest for a six-figure UFC contract. After coaches Faber and Cruz selected their teams, training began. Fighter Michael Chiesa then received sad news from home, and was faced with a very hard decision.

This episode was the most emotionally impactful episode, not just in TUF history, but perhaps the history of reality television, as Team Faber member Chiesa received a telephone call from his mother informing him of his father’s passing. Mark Chiesa had been unwell for some time but had insisted his sonpursue his dream of becoming the next Ultimate Fighter. The younger Chiesa has decided to honor his father’s wishes and will remain on the show.

“I told you it was the most emotional episode ever!” said Dana White, UFC President. “It doesn’t get more real than this. These guys aren’t actors, they’re guys who are working their asses off to become UFC fighters. They know what’s on the line and they want it bad.”

In this season’s format, the first half of the show will feature reality footage taped in the previous few days followed by a LIVE fight between a member of Team Cruz and Team Faber.

By winning the coin toss, Faber got the option of choosing the firstfight or making the first fighter selection. He chose the former, leaving Cruz with the initial fighter pick.

Cruz’s choices (in order): Justin Lawrence (4-0), Villa Ridge, Mo.; Sam Sicilia (11-0), Spokane Valley, Wash.; MylesJury (10-0), San Diego, Calif.; Mike Rio (9-1), Miami, Fla., Vick; Vinc Pichel (8-0), Sherman Oaks, Calif.; Chris Tickle (8-4), Bloomington, Ill.; and Jeremy Larsen (9-2), Phoenix, Ariz.

Faber’s choices (in order): Al Iaquinta (6-1-1), Wantagh, N.Y.; Cristiano Marcello (13-3), Curitiba, Brazil; Cruickshank; Joe Proctor (8-1), Pembroke, Mass.; Michael Chiesa (8-0), Spokane Valley, Wash., John Cofer (8-1), Hull, Ga.; Andy Ogle (9-1), Tynemouth, England; and Chris Saunders (10-2), Long Beach, Calif.

Friday night’s episode saw Vick knockout Cruickshank with an impressive knee to the head at 2:16 of the 1st round at the famed TUF Training Center in Las Vegas.

“I’m just so happy and feel so satisfied,” said Vick. “Team Cruz had a great game plan for me. It was the exact combination that we worked on all week and I landed it. To all my friends and family I love you all so much and thanks for all your support since the beginning of my fighting career.”

With the win, Team Cruz selected the next fight, which will pit Justin Lawrence against Cristiano Marcello on Episode 3, Friday, March 23.

“It’s my time,” said Lawrence. “Time for me to step up to the plate and come up with another victory for Team Cruz and keep the ball rolling. I’m going to go out there and execute my game plan.”

Marcello will be ready. “I think its going to be a great fight. He’s a tough kid and he’s going to have the chance to prove himself. So, let’s do it!”

The eventual winner of the inaugural 13-week Live season will receive a six-figure contract from the UFC and a Harley Davidson motorcycle. The Series continues next Friday on FX at its regular time of 10 p.m. ET/PT
