UNLV ATHLETICS NEWS: UFC Legend Forrest Griffin Leads Self-Defense Workshop

UFC LEGEND FORREST GRIFFIN LEADS SELF-DEFENSE WORKSHOP

Student-athletes and staff participated on campus Monday morning

UNLV Athletics began the first full week of November with a special self-defense workshop Monday morning, led by UFC fighting legend Forrest Griffin. Student-athletes and staff gathered at the Paul McDermott Physical Education Complex to learn tactics and strategies from the UFC Hall of Famer for self defense from potential assaults.

The workshop was part of a larger initiative by the athletics department to offer resources and to educate student-athletes on important and relevant topics in their day-to-day lives and personal development.

“We are continually exploring creative partnerships that help our student-athletes,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. “It was our privilege to work with the UFC, UFC Champion Forrest Griffin and our UNLV Police Department to put on this self-defense workshop for our student-athletes, equipping them with resources to keep them safe. We appreciate our Rebel Academy team, including Sarah Wattenberg and Mallory Poole for leading this initiative. It was an engaging and innovative way to learn important preventative measures.”

The hour-long session began with Griffin and UNLV Police Detective Paul Velez explaining the importance of being aware of ones surroundings at all times and being prepared for dangerous situations if they arise, while Velez provided information about campus resources available to all students in case or an emergency or assault. Griffin discussed multiple scenarios that could arise and demonstrated movements and tactics on how to react initially to escape from the danger, then asked participants to practice the moves on each other.

Griffin has been leading these workshops for over 16 years and credits his background as a police officer, UFC fighter and his training in jiu jitsu for helping him teach others how to protect themselves.

“I was a police officer, but I wasn’t certified to teach defensive tactics,” he said. “I was the only one actively doing jiu jitsu and fighting and competing, so they said let’s get this kid over here who knows what he is doing, so I’ve been doing this for a while now.”

The former UFC Champion gave several informative tips about what to do if someone finds oneself in an assault situation, but his main message was about how to prevent these kind of events from happening in the first place.

“Since it’s only an hour class, what we’re really trying to teach them about is mentality,” Griffin said. “Situational awareness is key. It’s easier to prevent these things before they happen, but if they do, it’s not time to be a victim, you are in a fight, this is happening and you’ve got to defend yourself.”

Sirius XM Host Jason Ellis Set To Fight Former UFC Fighters In Main Event Of EllisMania 10 With Dr. Drew Pinsky In His Corner

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Sirius XM host JASON ELLIS’ annual Ellismania boxing event to see what the radio host has planned next. This year, Ellis and his team have put together their most bizarre and hilarious bill of fights yet, as this year’s event will includes Michael Catherwood (co-host Loveline), Forrest Griffin (UFC Hall of Famer), Keith Jardine (UFC), Sal Masekela (host of ESPN’s X-Games), and more. In the main event, Jason Ellis will take to the ring with Dr. Drew Pinsky as his corner man, to face ten different opponents. The year’s Ellismania is set to take place on Saturday, February 21st, 2015 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. The event will be presented by Red Dragon Apparel, and be sponsored by Torque Athletic Gear and Electric California.

“Ellismania 10 will be the biggest, most insane one of all time! The event will have ordinary citizens punching each other in the face, highly-paid Vegas escorts, comedy, blood, electric dog collars, piñatas, virgins, bingo, and Dr. Drew,” commented Jason Ellis. “In the main event, I will be accepting a challenge that no radio host is idiotic enough to face. I’ll be fighting ten men, back to back, including former professional UFC fighters!”

Fans will be entertained throughout the night by Jason Ellis trademark brand of comedy, as they watch a full night of strange and comical boxing matches between radio personalities, celebrities, MMA fighters, and listeners. Ellismania is a self-branded evening of “fighting at its dumbest,” peppered with hilarious twists of comedy for the amusement of friends and the fans lucky enough to witness the absurdity.

The full line-up for this year’s EllisMania 10 includes:

  • Musical Chair Fight (When the music stops, two men without chairs fight each other)
  • Blindfold Remote Control Fight (Two blindfolded listeners will have to rely on instructions from their coach regarding what punches to throw and when)
  • Biggest Loser: Male (Two male listeners of the show face off to see who has lost the most weight leading up to the event)
  • Biggest Loser: Female
  • The Piñata Fight (Three listeners try to fight past two professional MMA fighters to break a piñata)
  • The Strip Fight (Two Female listeners will box and the loser of each round will have to remove an article of clothing)
  • The Virgin Fight (Two virgins fight to win a date with a professional escort)
  • The Five-Man Blindfolded Electric Dog Collar Fight
  • Cumtard vs. Will Pendarvis (The two radio personalities square off against one another in a high stakes match where the loser will suffer a humiliating punishment)
  • In the main event Jason Ellis is set to take on ten mystery opponents for a total of ten one-minute rounds ( Drew Pinsky will serve as Jason Ellis corner man and opponents include former UFC fighters)

Jason Ellis’s career has spread from action sports to radio personality, MMA Fighter, bestselling author and beyond. The Australian native emerged as one of the world’s top professional skateboarders before making the shift into radio as well as acting, mixed martial arts, and music.

Ellis is the host and star of The Jason Ellis Show on Sirius XM Radio. The show, which airs Monday through Friday from 3PM to 7PM Eastern Time CH41, is one of the most popular shows broadcast on satellite radio. His radio show is a high-energy, uncensored talk-meets-hard-rock radio format that is centered around Ellis’ unique, offbeat take on life.

Dignitaries, Local Influencers and Celebrities Prepare for the SNAP Experience January 27-31

Three Square Food Bank, in partnership with AARP and Weight Watchers, presents the SNAP Experience January 27 through 31, designed to promote advocacy around the federally funded Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.

During the SNAP Experience notable dignitaries, influencers and celebrities will limit their food spending while attempting to eat healthy, balanced diets. Each person will spend no more than $18.55 total for five days – the amount designated to those enrolled in the SNAP program.

The SNAP program provides assistance to people struggling with food insecurity as a result of unemployment, underemployment and poverty. Nevada currently ranks among the lowest states in food assistance participation. More than 250,000 low-income Southern Nevadans rely on SNAP benefits, half of which are children. For those with questions about the SNAP program, benefits and application, Three Square offers assistance through the Three Square Center (702-765-4030).

SNAP Experience participants include CEO of Three Square Food Bank Brian Burton, City of Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman, City of North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee, City of Henderson Mayor Andy Hafen, City of Boulder City Mayor Roger Tobler, City of Mesquite Mayor Mark Wier, Rumor Hotel chef Steve Austin, director of business development for Weight Watchers Heather Avila, UFC Hall of Fame fighter Forrest Griffin, KTNV morning and mid-day news anchor Jessica Janner, KKLZ mid-day personality Terrie Springs, and VIEW Neighborhood Newspapers copy editor Lisa Valentine.

Featured participants will post daily blogs about the experience, meal choices, and well-being during the week at www.snapexperiencelv.org.

Photos: Rapper Vanilla Ice Performs for Hundreds of Adoring Fans-Saturday, April 13

LAX Nightclub inside Luxor Hotel & Casino welcomed legendary rapper and GRAMMY Award-nominee Vanilla Ice last night (Saturday, April 13) where he performed for hundreds of adoring fans. Filled with clowns, bling and a brief water show, the multi-talented artist gave clubgoers a thrill of a lifetime with his nostalgic hits and iconic dance moves.

Entering the hot spot just after 1:00 a.m., LAX Nightclub took their attention to the main stage as DJ Dirty Chopsticks got on the mic to pump up the crowd before the star’s arrival. With strobe lights flickering and smog filling the air, the rapper ran onto the stage singing his heart pumping hit “Dirty South.” After his grand entrance, Vanilla Ice shouted, “There’s no place like Las Vegas and I’m happy to be here with all of you” sporting his blinged out, signature “Ice gear.” He then took a moment to recognize the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle generation” as he had his doting fans repeating after him shouting, “Go ninja go ninja go!” and began rapping one of his all-time favorite songs “Ninja Rap.” Joining the rapper on stage was Vanilla Ice’s “hype clown” who spritzed adoring fans with water on each side of the main stage, cooling off the amped up crowd.

The multi-talented artist addressed the masses saying, “Let’s kick it old school,” taking his admirers back to the 1990s with one of his most popular singles, “Play That Funky Music.” “This next song I wrote when I was 16-years-old and it sold more than 160 million records,” the rapper said. “Yo, VIP let’s kick it,” as the crowd collaborated and listened to the legend’s anthem, “Ice Ice Baby.” The humbled rapper invited a few beautiful ladies on stage to finish out the song, thanking his admirers and expressing all of his memories that resonated with the hit song.

Wrapping up this memorable performance, Vanilla Ice brought down the house with some of his more recent singles “Turn It Up” and “Rockstar Party.” “Thank you LAX Nightclub!” he said, as he made his way back to his VIP table.

Also seen partying at LAX Nightclub last night was an impressive roster of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) mixed martial artists including Forrest Griffin, Luke Barnatt and Josh Samman from the hit reality show “ Ultimate Fighter” now in its 17th season. Hot off her knockout fight from earlier this evening was UFC’s bantamweight champion Cat Zingano.  Vanilla Ice invited the well-known group to his VIP table located on the main stage where they celebrated the star’s exciting performance and Zingano’s win while also posing for pictures with clubgoers.

FIELD FINALIZED FOR THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER® ON FX

TUF™ Moves to Tuesday Nights

Season Begins With Special Two-Hour Premiere
Tuesday, January 22 on FX at 8 P.M. ET/PT

UFC® Champion Jon ‘Bones’ Jones and Title Challenger Chael Sonnen
To Coach Seven-Man Teams of Middleweights

Tuesdays just got TUF. On January 22, some of the world’s most talented and determined mixed martial artists will face-off in the most grueling sports tournament on television. Watch as 28 mixed martial arts prospects battle for a coveted spot on the new season of The Ultimate Fighter®, which begins with a special two-hour premiere airing at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FX.

The Ultimate Fighter, the Ultimate Fighting Championship®’s long-running reality television series, will run for 13 weeks and will culminate in a three-hour finale, live from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. Unlike previous seasons on FX, the one-hour broadcast will now be shown on Tuesday nights at its new regularly scheduled timeslot of 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The 14 successful combatants will be divided into two teams, which will be coached by two of the fiercest rivals in all of sport. UFC® light heavyweight champion and MMA superstar, Jon “Bones” Jones will captain one team, while the controversial and charismatic challenger Chael Sonnen will lead the second team into battle in this, the 17th installment of the series.

The coaches will then collide for the light heavyweight title on Saturday, April 27, at UFC® 159: JONES vs. SONNEN at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Not surprisingly, both Jones and Sonnen will be bringing their trademark self-confidence into their stints as coaches this season on The Ultimate Fighter.

“I thought it would be a good way to share myself with the sport of MMA,” Jones said. “I embrace the role.”

Said Sonnen: “The hottest show on FX is being graced with the greatest talent God ever made: Chael P. Sonnen.’’

The list of finalists in the middleweight (185 pounds) division was trimmed from more than 250 applicant athletes. The fighters – all seeking the opportunity of a lifetime and a six-figure contract from the Ultimate Fighting Championship – hail from the United States, Australia, England and Sweden.

“The quality of guys we have this season in unbelievable,” said UFC President Dana White. “From the fights to get into the house, to every single fight this season, I think the talent is some of the best I’ve ever seen on this show. We’re going to end up with some really good guys in the 185-pound division.”

“The production value has increased, the talent level is at an all-time high, and we have two of the most dynamic personalities in all of the UFC as our coaches,” said Chuck Saftler, EVP of FX Networks. “I’m extremely excited about this season of The Ultimate Fighter and truly believe this could be the show’s best season yet.”

On Jan. 22, the season will launch with 14 gripping elimination scraps. Those victorious in the opening round, or “Fight In”, become official cast members and earn their place in The Ultimate Fighter house in Las Vegas. The winners will be drafted into opposing teams of seven by Jones and Sonnen. Thereafter, cameras will document their activity before and after their training and fights during the season.

Each episode’s winners will advance in the single-elimination tournament until one is crowned The Ultimate Fighter.

“”TICKETS GO ON SALE THIS WEEK 10/26 FOR UFC 155: DOS SANTOS VS. VELASQUEZ II **

UFC® HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION JUNIOR DOS SANTOS MEETS CAIN VELASQUEZ IN LONG-AWAITED REMATCH ON DEC. 29

TICKETS FOR UFC® 155: DOS SANTOS vs. VELASQUEZ 2AT MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA IN LAS VEGAS ON SALE FRIDAY, OCT. 26!

On Saturday, Dec. 29 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the Ultimate Fighting Championship® closes 2012 with a bang, as UFC® heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos meets former champion Cain Velasquezin a long-awaited rematch between two of the sport’s hardest-hitting competitors.

Dos Santos (15-1, fighting out of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil) ended Velasquez’s reign as heavyweight champion last November, knocking out the two-time Division I All-American wrestler in the first round. Now, the 30-year-old Velasquez (9-1, fighting out of San Jose, Calif.) seeks revenge in arguably the biggest rematch in UFC history.

“Cain is on a mission to get the belt back and avenge the only loss of his career,” UFC President Dana White said. “He wants to prove that he’s still the best heavyweight in the world. But Junior is one of the hardest-hitting fighters ever and he proved that by knocking out Cain and Frank Mir in back to back fights. This is the perfect fight to end 2012!”

In addition to the heavyweight title rematch, former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin meets former Division I national champion wrestler Phil Davis in a pivotal 205-pound contest. Griffin, winner of season one of The Ultimate Fighter®, defeated Tito Ortiz in a trilogy bout in July. Now he collides with Davis, who is fresh off a brilliant submission victory over Wagner Prado at UFC 153.

UFC 155 also features surging middleweight star Chris Weidman (9-0, fighting out of Mineola, N.Y.) taking on Tim Boetsch (16-4, fighting out of Sunbury, Pa.) in a fight that will push the winner toward a 185-pound title shot. Weidman scored a first-round TKO of top contender Mark Munoz, while Boetsch snapped Hector Lombard’s five-year, 20-fight winning streak by defeating the Cuban in July.

If that wasn’t enough, Gray Maynard (12-1-1, fighting out of San Jose, Calif.) faces submission ace Joe Lauzon (22-7, fighting out of Bridgewater, Mass.) in a bout between two of the lightweight division’s top contenders. Maynard defeated Clay Guida in his last fight in June, while Lauzon earned another Fight of the Night award in August with a thrilling win over Jamie Varner.

FORMER UFC CHAMPS GIVE THOUGHTS ON JONES VS. EVANS

EVERY FORMER LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP
PUMPED FOR ‘BONES’ vs. RASHAD
FORMER CHAMPS WEIGH-IN ON BIGGEST 205lbs FIGHT IN YEARS

Some of the greatest names in the sport’s pantheon have held and fought for the UFC’s 205lbs title since its inception in 1997, including Hall of Famers Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell and iconic fighters including Vitor Belfort, Tito Ortiz and “Rampage” Jackson.

The light heavyweight title – which was called the middleweight title until May 2001 – has been contested in some of the biggest and most exciting bouts in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship organization:

  • Tito Ortiz and  Ken Shamrock went to war for the 205lbs title in their epic November 2002 battle

  • The first ever clash of TUF coaches was for the light heavyweight belt, when Chuck Liddell KO’d Randy Couture to ignite his reign as champion

  • Liddell’s second fight with Ortiz at UFC 66 was one of the most anticipated – and successful – UFC title fights of all time

  • The 205lbs strap was also the first UFC belt to be unified with a PRIDE FC organization title, when “Rampage” Jackson defeated Dan Henderson over five rounds at UFC 75 in London, England, in September 2007.

  • The title was on the line in the 2008 Fight of the Year when Forrest Griffin ripped the belt from “Rampage” Jackson.

  • Current king Jon Jones became the youngest ever UFC world champion, aged 23, when he hammered “Shogun” Rua in March 2011.

Now, this Saturday night in Atlanta, the 205lbs division championship is again on the line in perhaps the most toxic grudge match in years, as Jones defends against former champion and former close friend “Suga” Rashad Evans.

“The light heavyweight division has always been a special weight class in the UFC,” said UFC President Dana White, “and the Jon Jones vs Rashad Evans match could be the biggest fight at 205lbs in years. The last time we had a 205lbs title fight with this much emotion and excitement around it was the second Chuck Liddell vs Tito Ortiz fight in December of 2006.

“Jon Jones is a freak of nature in mixed martial arts. Here’s a guy who got into the UFC after only a couple of years of training, came right out and started beating top guys using spinning elbows and all these other crazy moves, and he then wins the UFC title at only 23 years old. Jones is already on his way to being one of the best fighters to ever hold the UFC light heavyweight belt, which is phenomenal if you look at the killers who’ve held this belt.

“But anyone who counts Rashad Evans out of this fight is out of their mind. Look at what he has done: he won the Ultimate Fighter as a heavyweight, then not only beat – but stopped – champions like Tito Ortiz, Chuck Liddell and Forrest Griffin, and also beat top contenders like Michael Bisping, “Rampage” Jackson, and Phil Davis.

“He’s been in the UFC since 2005. It is 2012 now, and in that time he’s lost once. Rashad Evans is the most underrated fighter in the entire sport. No-one can deny he is one of the best fighters, pound-for-pound in the world.

“I’m pumped for Jones v Evans. This is going to be historic fight for the division on April 21.”

White isn’t the only one who is excited for the UFC 145 main event. Here, every former holder of the UFC 205lbs title weigh-in on the significance of the UFC 145 main event:

“Shogun” Rua, champion from May 8, 2010 to Mar 19, 2011
“They are two very smart, strategic athletes. Both of them fight thinking of their opponent’s strengths and weaknesses and think about how to fight the best possible fight to win. But I think Jon Jones has an advantage, since he is very hard to reach. He is not only long (limbed) but also fast and he can react very quickly, I know this. So, I think it’s going to be Jones’ match. However, let’s not forget Rashad is also very strategic. I believe Rashad will have a good gameplan and I am very interested to see what he will try to do in this fight.”

Lyoto Machida, champion from May 23, 2009 to May 8, 2010
“Jones vs Evans is a big fight for the fans and a big fight for the division. It is a very interesting fight; Jones is very unorthodox and is strong in all aspects of the game, but Rashad is a great wrestler and has the hand speed to catch Jones.”

Forrest Griffin, champion from Jul 5, 2008 to May 23, 2009
“This is a great fight. I’m glad I’m not fighting Jon Jones anytime soon, but I think Rashad has the right style to give him problems. There are so many emotions between these guys going into the fight, and I know the Atlanta fans will be getting their money’s worth. Jones looks very nasty, but I’m not going to underestimate Rashad. I kinda did that before once…”

“Rampage” Jackson, champion from May 26, 2007 to Jul 5, 2008
“Rashad has to go for it right from the start, for real. Rashad can’t play on the outside, you can’t fight no Jon Jones on the outside, believe me. Rashad is fast and can surprise you. He surprised me by faking a takedown and hitting me with a right hand which kinda stunned me. I think he can do that to Jon Jones, but he has to do it right away because the more time you give Jones, the harder it is to set him up for a punch. I think Jon Jones will win, but I think Rashad has a chance.”

Chuck Liddell, champion from Apr 16, 2005 to May 26, 2007
“Everyone is different but, I think, for most fighters getting into the Octagon with someone they don’t like is a great motivation in training. Every time you are tired or holding a little back, you think about losing to this guy you can’t stand and it helps you give 100%. That’s how I was with Tito, I couldn’t stand the idea of losing to him and so I trained harder.

“I’d love to know who really got the best of it when these guys trained together. You get a feeling for someone when you spar with them. That’s why I was so confident against Tito; I’d beat him up standing, wrestling and at BJJ when we trained together years before out fights and I knew I was in his head because of that. Listening to Rashad, it seems from watching the Primetime show that he feels he’s in Jon’s head a little. He sounds very confident and I think that’s based on experiences in the gym. I’m glad he is confident, because that’s something you have to have against Jones. If you don’t go after Jon you are in for a bad night.”

Vitor Belfort, champion from Jan 31, 2004 to Aug 21, 2004
“I think this fight will be great for the sport because Jones and Evans used to train together. That changes things, now they are going to fight against each other. We are in the new era of sport with these athletes like Jon Jones and the techniques they can do. Both guys have a chance to be the winner, and it could come down to who is better on that one night.  I am looking forward to seeing this huge fight.”

Randy Couture, two-time champion from Jun 6, 2003 to Jan 31, 2004 and Aug 21, 2004 to Apr 16, 2005
“I think it is going to be very interesting, Rashad has the speed and skills to win. Rashad has to avoid his propensity for standing up and just striking, which he has done in the past. He can’t just strike with Jones; if he does he will lose because Jon has more tools in the toolbox. Rashad has to take Jones down, not just once or twice but every single time he has any opportunity. If Jones is worried about getting taken down, that’s when Rashad can put his hands on him and do some damage. But he has to keep Jon guessing if it is a takedown or a strike that’s coming.

“I think Jones is super-talented and he is clearly getting better in each fight. He could turn into a very special type of champion. He poses some very unique problems in the Octagon – and so far no one has solved too many of them. I think this is a huge fight for the division. “Bones” Jones is very hot right now and with the personalities and the back story, it all hypes this up into a very interesting fight.”

Tito Ortiz, champion from Apr 14, 2000 to Sep 26, 2003 “Jones is looking very good. But Rashad is fast, man, and once he hurts you he’s on you. I’d like to see Rashad use his wrestling and takedowns and really mix it up. I think it will be a great fight.”

Frank Shamrock, inaugural champion from Dec. 21 1997 to Nov. 24, 1999
“This fight has a tremendous story behind it, with it having grown out of a friendship that went sour back when these two were teammates. The drama that’s fueling this is incredible. Fans can expect a fight that, stylistically, will be extremely challenging for Jones to overcome, and he’ll have fits with Rashad’s wrestling if he’s able to put Jon on his back. But ultimately, I see Jones being able to inflict more damage and walk away with the belt still in hand. This will be a fight that will not end as easily and devastatingly as Jones’s others have, but rather one of those moments in his career where he’ll have to pull himself up and battle until the final bell. In the end, this fight will help Jon become a better fighter and a better champion, and will endear himself to fans for years to come.”
