Rí Rá Las Vegas Fights Childhood Cancers With
St. Baldrick’s Foundation Head-Shaving Fundraiser March 12

Rí Rá Las Vegas hosts its fifth annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation  signature head-shaving event on Saturday, March 12 to raise money for the national organization funding research to find cures for all childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

Starting at noon, registered attendees will shed their locks to support the fight against childhood cancers. Those looking to make a bald statement can register online (www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/7982/2016) or on-site the day of the event. Once registered, volunteers will raise funds for St. Baldrick’s by soliciting donations from friends, family and anyone interested in contributing to the cause.

On Saturday, March 12, those who have signed up for the St. Baldrick’s event will go bald at the pub. Throughout the day, local barbers will volunteer their time to give the haircuts. Those wishing to keep their hair can donate funds online or at the pub.

Over the last four years, Rí Rá has raised more than $76,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and lifesaving childhood cancer research.

About Rí Rá Las Vegas
Crafted in the warm pub style of 19th century Ireland, Rí Rá Las Vegas is located inside The Shoppes at Mandalay Place.  The authentic Irish pub features a multitude of artifacts that were carefully restored in Wicklow, Ireland and shipped to their new home in Las Vegas.  Rí Rá Las Vegas contains an authentic Victorian Shop bar that began its life in Ireland in the 1880s, a whiskey bar adorned with an original glazed jewelry cabinet from 1900, an oak floor from a whiskey distillery and an 8-foot-tall, 500-pound carved plaster statue of St. Patrick dating back to 1850.  The pub hosts live entertainment seven nights a week in a music room constructed with artifacts dating back to 1890 from the Olympia Theater in Dublin, Ireland. Born and raised in Dublin, Rí Rá Las Vegas owners David Kelly and Ciaran Sheehan have been close friends since they were 14-years-old. Kelly and Sheehan later partnered with Jay Luther, whom Kelly met while working for Guinness. Rí Rá Las Vegas is one of nine pubs the trio has opened in the U.S.

World’s Largest Leprechaun Gathering Scheduled in Las Vegas to Benefit Childhood Cancer Research

St. Baldrick’s Foundation Lepre-Con 2016 aims to break world record

Las Vegas, WE NEED YOU!

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation announces St. Baldrick’s Lepre-Con 2016, the inaugural gathering of the largest number of leprechauns in one place, presented by national hair care franchise Sport Clips Haircuts, which has almost 1,500 locations across the U.S., including thirteen locations in the Las Vegas area. The event is expected to make its way right into the Guinness Book of World Records. The current record was set in Ireland in 2012 with 1,263 participants.

St. Baldrick’s Lepre-Con will take place Saturday, Feb. 13 at Town Square in Las Vegas. The event will also include a 5k run/walk, a kids’ activity corner, live music, beer garden and of course no Lepre-Con would be complete without an Irish jig! Two local kids will be honored: Kaila Elder, 12, who just finished treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, and Avery Driscoll, 12, who recently underwent brain surgery after learning her brain tumor had grown.

To help us create the largest gathering of Leprechauns outside of Ireland, all registered entrants will receive a leprechaun costume, including a hat, beard and t-shirt.  Best of all, entrants can decide to run, walk or simply be part of the leprechaun gathering. To comply with Guinness Book of World Record rules, everyone will need to be in their costume.

This one-of-a-kind event starts the countdown to the numerous St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events that will take place locally in March. Avery’s younger sister, Hallie, 9, will kick-off Lepre-Con 2016 by shaving her head on stage in honor of her sister.

Unlike any other convention, St. Baldrick’s Lepre-Con is not just about thousands of people dressed as leprechauns having fun with family and friends – it’s about helping to give kids with cancer a future. Proceeds from the event will support world-class childhood cancer research through the grants funded by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

“We at St. Baldrick’s, and our amazing volunteer team in Las Vegas, are thrilled to host this unique event to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research,” said Kathleen Ruddy, CEO of St. Baldrick’s. “We hope to break the world record and show kids with cancer they have our support. If you think our head-shaving events are fun, just wait until you see countless leprechauns invading Las Vegas!”

Those who can’t make it to the event can still donate to the Foundation and help to raise awareness for Lepre-Con by creating a jig video and posting it to social media using the hashtag #LepreConJig. Then, tag and challenge three friends to post their own video doing the jig. But why three? To recognize that every three minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide. Be part of a record-breaking event! For additional information on how to get involved, be a sponsor, or to register for St. Baldrick’s Lepre-Con 2016, visit Lepre-Con.org.

More Than 600 Heads to be Shaved this Year to raise Funds to Fight Childhood Cancer

7-year supporters to be knighted as “Knights of the Bald Table”

For the ninth consecutive year, the Irish pub trade in Las Vegas is raising funds to research and conquer childhood cancer, spearheaded by a gala head-shaving party on Saturday, March 7th from 11 a.m. until 3 a.m. on Sunday, March 8th. During the 16-hour period, the benefit will have scores of celebrities, bands, special performers and regular folks taking part in fighting childhood cancer.

McMullan’s Irish Pub, located on Tropicana and Cameron, is the headquarter for the event and has been for the past nine years and is delighted to work with 7th-year participant Nine Fine Irishmen at New York, New York, 4th-year participant RiRa Irish Pub at Mandalay Bay and 3rd-year participant Vinyl Lounge at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

stbaldricksevent

Las Vegas Valley residents have gathered at McMullan’s and have provided more than $3.5M for the campaign to find a cure for the killer of more children than any other childhood disease.

“We don’t have huge formal dinners or silent auction as our fundraiser. Rather, we have hundreds of people from all over Southern Nevada show up at our pub and sponsor their neighbors, friends and even strangers who are willing to have their heads shaved in solidarity with children who have lost their hair to cancer,” says Brian McMullan, Owner of McMullan’s Irish Pub. “We hope to add to the more than $154 million to the Foundation awarded as grants to physicians and researchers across the globe. We will beat this horrific disease”

All of the dedicated ‘shavees’, barbers, volunteers and committee members who have participated for seven years will be admitted to the “Knights of the Bald Table”. Throughout the day you will be able to see people being knighted on stage in honor of their continuous contribution to this great cause.

Masters of ceremonies for the shaving of an estimated 450 volunteers include TV personality, Robin Leach; TV newsmen, Nate Tannenbaum; TV news personalities, Gerard Ramalho and Elizabeth Watts; Entertainer, Clint Holmes and Kelly Clinton Holmes; Starsky and Hutch’s Huggy Bear, Antonio Fargas; Jennifer Romas with the Sexxy cast, CBS Radio morning show host, Carlos Diaz and Spence and many more. Extensive radio remotes will originate on local CBS-owned FM and AM stations and the event can be streamed live from computers around the world.

Special ‘shavee’ volunteers include Kevin Page, Board of Regents Chair and Dr. Jonathon Bernstein, Las Vegas Pediatric Oncologist from the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, who has also received the seven St. Baldrick’s grants.

“The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, based in Monrovia, CA, was founded 16 years ago by three people who wanted to do more to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than just sit around and drink beer”, McMullan said.

One of them offered children cancer research as a fundraising recipient and the participants had a goal of raising $1,000 each. After raising more than ten times that amount, the annual event mushroomed with more than 100,000 heads get shaved annually and is held in pubs, firehouses, restaurants, meeting halls, high school gyms and other venues in all 50 states and 18 countries.

The sad fact is that every three minutes a child is diagnosed with cancer worldwide and the average number years of life a child loses to cancer is 71 years. The time to help is now. Since 2005, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation has awarded more than $154 million to support research that shows the most promise in finding cures and better treatments for children fighting cancer. This year, the Foundation hopes to surpass its 2014 fundraising record of $38.9 million. We need YOU to help make that happen.

Family and Friends Shave Day Supports St Baldrick’s Foundation

Family and Friends Shave Day to Support St. Baldrick’s Foundation on February 22

Public Encouraged to Support Volunteer Shavees!

Clients, parents, friends and supporters of the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada will gather on Sunday, February 22, 2015 in support of the lifesaving childhood cancer research provided through St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the many warriors who have undergone treatment.

Family and Friends Shave Day is an annual fundraiser where individuals and teams who have gathered donations will brave the shave on stage.  All the money raised at the event is donated to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the largest funder of childhood cancer research grants outside of the U.S. Government.   Because kids with cancer often lose their hair during treatment, shaves show their support by shaving their heads voluntarily and inspiring friends and family to donate money to support research.

“This is a wonderful and touching event,” said Annette Logan, CEO of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation. “While we are gathering in support of childhood cancer research and doing all we can to raise funds for them, many are also shaving their head in honor of someone near and dear to them and it can be very emotional.”

Among the individuals having their head shaved at the event:

  • Dr. Jonathan Bernstein – Founder of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation and the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada.  This will be his ninth head shave.
  • Dr. Alan Ikeda – Director of Oncology at the Children’s Specialty Center. This will be his third head shave.
  • Dr. Alexandra Walsh – Oversees the Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic for childhood cancer survivors at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada. This will be her FIRST head shave!

The event will kick off at 2 p.m. at L’Oracle Gym, 7020 W. Warm Springs Road (Near Warm Springs & Rainbow), Suite 170, Las Vegas.

Organizers have committed to a $25,000 fundraising goal on Family and Friends Shave Day.  Last year, a total of $28,897.00 was raised at the event.

Donations are gladly accepted and the public can easily support those individuals or teams who have already committed to have their heads shaved. Go to http://bit.ly/LasVegasHeadShave to make a donation, or call (888) 899-2253.

Last year, Kathleen Ruddy, CEO of St Baldrick’s Foundation and Annette Logan CEO and President of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation both shaved their heads (Kathleen’s second shave, Annette’s sixth) in support of childhood cancer research and in honor of the many warriors who did not survive.  Video: http://youtu.be/xSZjf2X-uBw

Bernstein, Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada Medical Director, has shaved his head eight times in support of kids with cancer and to support ongoing research into the causes of childhood cancer through St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Stylist Britnie Revell of Mosaic Salon offers assistance.

About Cure 4 The Kids Foundation: The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and the Hemophilia Treatment Center Of Nevada are funded, in part, by the Cure 4 The Kids Foundation.  The 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization was founded in 2007 by Dr. Jonathan Bernstein to ensure children with life threatening illnesses received proper medical attention regardless of their family’s income or presence of health insurance.  To date, more than 8,000 patients have been treated by physicians and medical staff at the Children’s Specialty Center and Hemophilia Treatment Center.  The Children’s Specialty Center provides medical treatment to children facing devastating diseases such as cancer, rheumatological diseases, as well as rare and ultra rare diseases. All our providers are Board Certified in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. The Hemophilia Treatment Center (HTC) of Nevada is the only Federally recognized HTC in the state.  It is one of 140 HTCs around the country which provides individual services to children and adults with inherited bleeding disorders. Studies show people with Hemophilia who are treated at Federally recognized HTCs have lower overall healthcare costs, lower hospitalization rates and lower mortality rates than non-HTC users. The Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Charity Care plan ensures patients at The Children’s Specialty Center and the Hemophilia Treatment center receive medical treatment regardless of family income or presence of medical insurance. www.cure4thekids.org

Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada Receives $245,000
Grant for Long-Term Follow-Up Clinic

LTFU Clinic Provides Specialized Care for Childhood Cancer Survivors

The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada, the state’s only nonprofit pediatric cancer outpatient treatment facility, received a $245,000 grant from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation to further expand the Specialty Center’s Long-Term Follow-Up (LTFU) clinic for childhood cancer survivors. The LTFU clinic is the only one of its kind in Southern Nevada.

Funds granted by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will help expand the LTFU clinic as well as incorporate the Children’s Oncology Group’s (COG) Long-Term Follow Up Guidelines for Survivors of Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult Cancers, considered the most comprehensive guidelines available.

Long-Term Follow-Up clinics are considered essential for all childhood cancer survivors, no matter where, or how long ago treatment was given.

Specific treatments that saved the lives of childhood cancer patients can have side effects many years after treatment is finished. The LTFU clinic helps to educate patients and their families on the importance of continued health screenings and the possible side effects, or late effects, that could come about based on their specific treatment.

“I’ve always told patients that knowledge is power and we want to give patients the most information we can to help them live a long and healthy life,” said Alexandra Walsh, M.D., Coordinator of the LTFU clinic. “The LTFU clinic educates patients on their specific health risks from their specific treatments, which is information they need to stay healthy.”

Those who were treated for childhood cancer and are no longer in treatment can schedule an appointment or receive additional information by calling the Long-Term Follow-Up clinic (702) 732-3330. Patients who were treated at other facilities are welcomed. Those without medical insurance or the ability to pay for the office visit are also encouraged to call.

The LTFU clinic provides access to a board certified pediatric hematology oncology provider, social worker, neuropsychologist, nurse coordinator and physical therapist.

In addition, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation funding will initiate a special pediatric cancer registry program to greatly expand the amount of information collected on childhood cancer patients in Nevada. Ultimately this will provide a more comprehensive picture of pediatric cancer patients, their treatments and any trends affecting this particular population.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

The Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and The Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada are programs of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non profit organization founded in 2007 by Jonathan Bernstein, M.D.

Alexandra Walsh, M.D, board certified in pediatric hematology oncology, is coordinator of the Long-Term Follow-Up clinic for childhood cancer survivors at the Children's Specialty Center of Nevada.

Cure 4 The Kids Foundation is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization. Its mission is to provide funding and access to the latest medical treatments for those facing life-threatening diseases such as cancer, rare and ultra rare diseases, inherited bleeding disorders and rheumatological conditions. Dr. Jonathan Bernstein founded Cure 4 The Kids Foundation in 2007. Bernstein saw firsthand the difficulties faced by families whose children were affected by major diseases but didn’t have the financial resources or health insurance to receive treatment. Cure 4 The Kids Foundation was created with these families in mind. Cure 4 The Kids Foundation’s Charity Care Program ensures patients at the Children’s Specialty Center of Nevada and the Hemophilia Treatment Center of Nevada receive medical treatment regardless of family income or presence of health insurance. www.cure4thekids.org

Rí Rá Las Vegas Fights Childhood Cancers With A St. Baldrick’s Foundation Head-Shaving Fundraiser March 1

Rí Rá Las Vegas, located inside The Shoppes at Mandalay Place, hosts its third annual St. Baldrick’s signature head-shaving event on Saturday, March 1 to raise money for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

Starting at noon, registered attendees will shed their locks to support the fight against childhood cancer. Those looking to make a bald statement can register online (www.stbaldricks.org/events/mypage/7982/2014) to shave at Rí Rá or to donate time or money to the cause. Once registered, volunteers will raise funds for St. Baldrick’s by soliciting donations from friends, family and anyone willing to spare some change.

Those who sign up to shave at Rí Rá will go bald March 1 at the pub. Local barbers from The Art of Shaving at Mandalay Place will volunteer their time to give the haircuts, which will continue throughout the day. Those wishing to keep their hair can donate funds online and at the pub.

During its first two years participating in the event, Rí Rá raised nearly $40,000 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and lifesaving childhood cancer research. This year, the pub’s goal is to raise more than $20,000.

Head shaving fundraiser to benefit childhood cancer research on March 2

Make a bold move in the fight against cancer and go bald with New York New York Hotel & Casino at Nine Fine Irishmen for the St. Baldrick’s Day head shaving event on Saturday, March 2 from 1 – 11 p.m. Guests of all ages are invited to enjoy a fun-filled day on the New York-New York Brooklyn Bridge with live music, drinks and more, where participants can shed their locks in support of the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a national organization funding research for childhood cancer. The event is free and open to the public.

“Shaving your head is an incredible act of generosity and respect for the courageous children battling cancer, not to mention a fun way to build awareness for St. Baldrick’s,” said Rick Jost, vice president of human resources for New York-New York. “Nine Fine Irishmen and New York-New York look forward to welcoming the community to celebrate life and raise money for this important cause.”

In its fourth year, Nine Fine Irishmen’s St. Baldrick’s Day free events are amping up the excitement from years past with live performances by Spazmatics, Phoenix and Ri-Ra on the Brooklyn Bridge and restaurant patio, festive drinks from the outdoor bar and photo opportunities at the head-shaving booths to commemorate the day.

In exchange for their tresses, shavees can take advantage of a special “shavecation” package at New York-New York featuring hotel accommodations, 2-for-1 admission to The Roller Coaster, 2-for-1 breakfast at Il Fornaio and half off daybeds at the pool. As an added bonus, any adult who shaves their head will receive a free pint of beer at Nine Fine Irishmen and children will receive a free ride on The Roller Coaster. Participants will also be given free admission to Celtic Feis, a three-day Irish festival at New York-New York on St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Last year, more than 200 people came together to go bald, raising more than $100,000 for cancer research – this year’s event will keep up the momentum by matching last year with a fundraising goal of $100,000 to benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Participants interested in shaving their heads for the cause can register online here for $50 or register day-of on site. Group registration is also available for teams and organizations.

Circus Couture’s “86 Peculiar Place” features both a silent and live art auction as well as explosive circus performances intertwined with outlandish runway fashion.  “86 Peculiar Place” will take guests to a whimsical world where those deemed too bright, too strange, or too extraordinary for our world coexist in celebration of their oddity.  In 2011, The Las Vegas Review Journal praised Circus Couture as “fast becoming one of the hippest and most entertaining charity nights of the year.”  With their sister fundraising team Cirque du SoBald, Circus Couture has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for pediatric cancer care and research since its inception.

“A cancer journey forces a child to go through many changes, both physical and emotional, that can make them wish for nothing greater than to feel normal.  “86 Peculiar Place” was created to honor them, a magical place where residents must stand out to fit in,” said Erica Linz, Circus Couture Artistic Director.  “Both the extraordinary, world champion talent gracing our stage and the spectacular fine art gallery represent the amazing kids we aim to help.  They put the “art” in heart and the caliber of performance they bring to the cause is awe inspiring…”

Circus Couture’s “86 Peculiar Place” will be held in Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.  Tickets may be purchased at box office, online at www.thesmithcenter.com, or by calling: 702-749-2000. Tickets start at $15.  VIP packages are available by contacting Brett Palmer at vip@circus-couture.com or by calling 702-217-0429.  For additional information on Circus Couture, visit http://www.circus-couture.com.
