Recorded in various studios in Arizona, Texas and London; there is a Beat Poetry-esque meter to Sand & Snow. Like a Brit-pop score to Jack Kerouac’s On The Road; the narrative flow coupled with propulsive bass lines and swooning symphonic melodies that dart in and out to punctuate the melodicism, is a snapshot of the creativity inspired by the band’s move from the UK. “In a way it feels like our story started when we got on a plane and came to America. We felt like it was somehow ready for us and we had something to offer.”

Sand & Snow documents this romance and self-discovery from a band with proven songwriting chops, and showcases a freshly confident depth in the songwriting.

Artist: dredg
Date: Saturday, July 30
Time: Midnight
Cost: $15
Description:
Bay Area rock band dredg will soon release their new album, Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy, which is the fifth release in more than 15 years.

For nearly eight months, beginning last winter, the band members sent songs back and forth over e-mail, allowing the tracks to slowly build and layer under individual microscopes. The resulting album is almost like opening a new chapter of a book. The players are familiar and it still sounds like the work of the same artist, but the tones have shifted and the setting’s changed.

Although the tones and pacing shift as the album progresses, the songs all fall under the category of what Hayes calls “dark pop.” “The Thought of Losing You,” driven by a surging guitar riff, achieves emotional depth through simplicity rather than over-complication, while “Upon Returning” pairs rough-edged guitars with Hayes’ ambient vocals that soar in juxtaposition with the grinding instrumentals. A shadowed mood hovers under the music, lending a sense of pensive introspection to the songs, but in the end the album emerges as a beacon of optimism.

Artist: Dilana
Date: Friday, August 26
Time: Midnight
Cost: $14
Description:
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, the girl known by age two as Dilana Smith discovered a love for music at an early age, participating in school and church choirs as an escape from an unpleasant home life. Inspired by such visceral singers as Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, she left school at sixteen to follow her own dreams and soon found herself with a promising music career in Holland, becoming one of the country’s most coveted live acts. Her 2000 album Wonderfool scored five singles, four videos and a string of touring and festival gigs throughout the region.

By way of Houston, she made it to L.A. and wound up auditioning for “Rock Star Supernova.” Although most fans expected her to win, Dilana came in second to Canadian vocalist Lukas Rossi during the competition’s finale. Unfazed, America’s newest rock vixen mounted an initial solo tour and more recently opened for Rockstar Supernova, earning consistently stellar reviews.
