Prince of Darkness Pummels Las Vegas Celebrity Photographer

One of Las Vegas’ best celebrity and rock ‘n roll photographers is Erik Kabik. You’ve seen Kabik’s photos on all the websites and magazines that are about Las Vegas. His photos are usually credited as Erik Kabik Photography/ Retna Ltd and those photos are usually a spectacular rock star shot. I spoke with Erik a while back about what life is like as a famous celebrity photographer.

Accosted in Las Vegas by The Prince of Darkness

There were some photos that I had seen last year of Ozzy Osbourne on stage in all his glory having a little fun at the expense of the photographers at the base of the stage. One of those photographers was Kabik. He had the pleasure of having Ozzy pick him out of the photographer pit to be on the receiving end of a bucket of water. The shot was Ozzy all wild-eyed throwing the water right at him. I’m a big Ozzy fan, but is Erik still a fan after his camera gear was soaked?

Kabik explains that the photo that I saw was done by Chase Stevens, who was the Las Vegas Review Journal’s photographer. He was standing next to Kabik and took that shot. Kabik happened to be looking down at his camera at the crucial moment, so there was no time to get out of the way. “As I looked up, I saw Ozzy’s eyes looking directly in my eyes as the bucket of water was being flung towards me. So, I had no time to even, like, move! So, it just blanketed me and then covered my cameras and I just fell to the ground.”
“OMG, was that you that just got pummeled?!” said the texts he was receiving from people he knew in the crowd that could see him up near the stage.

Kabik explained that Ozzy always does throw water into the crowd at his concerts, but said he didn’t know if he has ever directly thrown it at the photographers before. So, that may have been an unusual occurrence. He said that his equipment can usually take it, but it certainly isn’t good for that to happen. It happened right towards the end of the shoot so he had already gotten enough photos. “So, he hit me. I went to the ground. Then I just ran to the side of the stage… and dried off my gear as fast as I could in panic mode. It was pretty crazy,” he laughed.

When Erik Kabik is not being attacked by The Prince of Darkness, he is the house photographer for events at The Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas, one of the hottest new venues. He also is still doing plenty of other celebrity and rock ‘n roll photography in and around many venues in Las Vegas. You can follow Erik Kabik on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to see a constant stream of incredible concert photos from Las Vegas.

PRS Guitarist NEAL SCHÖN to Release New Fusion and Blues-Inspired Hard Rock Album

Legendary guitarist Neal Schön has joined forces with bassist Marco Mendoza (Black Star Riders, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy) and drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Hardline) to create a unique body of work with jazz and blues-inspired virtuosic hard rock playing, entitled SO U.  The new album features Schön, Mendoza and Castronovo splitting vocal and writing duties, with many of the tracks also co-written by Night Ranger/Damn Yankee’s songwriter, singer and bassist Jack Blades. Schön commented, “This is a great new record that features all three of us – Deen, Marco and myself – sharing lead vocals.  Enjoy!”

Best known as founding member and lead guitarist of Journey, Neal Schön has enjoyed a remarkable career as one of rock n’ roll’s top virtuosos, with a hand in creating some of the most popular songs of all time.  Beginning his career more than 35 years ago in the San Francisco Bay area, the 15-year-old guitar prodigy left home to join Santana.  Schön moved on in 1973 to form Journey.  With Journey and other projects, he has earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 platinum and gold albums, was awarded the prestigious “Legend Of Live Award” at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005 and was individually inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall Of Fame in 2013.   As the only member to record on all of Journey’s albums, Schön continues with the band today in its latest incarnation.

In addition to 6 solo albums and 14 studio albums with Journey, Neal Schön has also performed with Joe Cocker, Sammy Hagar, Paul Rodgers, Larry Graham, Betty Davis, Michael Bolton, fusion legend Jan Hammer, Hardline and supergroup Bad English, as well as a variety of side projects.  His latest instrumental solo album, THE CALLING, released in 2012 via Frontiers Records, won rave reviews from fans and the media alike, with Vintage Guitar declaring “THE CALLING is a fine piece of work demonstrating that Schön still has it going on – and then some…The songs are strong and his guitar tones are absolutely luxurious.”  In demand as one of the leading guitarists of his generation, Schön uses custom-built PRS Private Stock Neal Schon guitars, made especially for Neal by world-acclaimed Maryland guitar manufacturer Paul Reed Smith Guitars.

The George Gee Orchestra featuring Vocalist John Dokes Brings the Swing to the Suncoast Showroom on February 1

Bring your dancing shoes down to the Suncoast Showroom for the swingin’ sounds of the George Gee Orchestra, featuring vocalist John Dokes, for a one-night-only big band dance event on Saturday, February 1.

Music by the George Gee Orchestra elegantly balances genuine traditions with exhilarating modernism. This versatile ensemble performs everything from a sweet foxtrot ballad to rock and soul party favorites and all-out rollickin’ roadhouse boogie.

Gee is considered the world’s only Chinese-American swing big bandleader, offering a unique cross-cultural perspective. The Orchestra played at Ozzy Osbourne’s 50th birthday party in Beverly Hills, was the first modern-era swing band welcomed from the West to perform at a swing dance event in Japan and Quincy Jones arranged for the band to perform for the Royal Family of Jordan.

Featured Vocalist for the George Gee Orchestra, John Dokes first came to prominence as a championship lindy hopper in New York. Dokes is an accomplished baritone, singing a mixture of blues, ballads, popular songs and jazz standards.

For one special night only, the Suncoast Showroom will feature dance floor space from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $15.95, plus tax and convenience fees and the event is general admission. Tickets can be purchased at any Boyd Gaming Box Office, by calling 702.636.7075, or visiting www.suncoastcasino.com.

Phil Lewis featuring Sin City Sinners – Monday Night Rocks
10:30 p.m.
Singer for the LA Guns and rock guitarist, Phil Lewis, will perform at Crown Theater alongside Sin City Sinners. Lewis got his start in the music industry when he formed a glam rock band called Girl, which signed with Jet Records in 1979 under Don Arden’s label. The group toured with acts such as Ozzy Osbourne and ZZ Top. Lewis eventually began working with guitarist Bernie Torme, touring and playing to sold-out audiences across England in 1985. In 1987, Lewis auditioned for the band L.A. Guns and was quickly picked up as the lead singer. After much work, the band signed to Polygram Records and released its self-titled debut album in 1988. L.A. Guns opened for AC/DC and Def Leppard, among others, and sold more than half a million copies of the album in America alone. The song, “The Ballad of Jayne,” from its second album Cocked and Loaded, was a top 20 hit and the most requested song on MTV for two weeks. Lewis took a break from the band and in 1994 built a recording studio to start producing local bands. During this time, he also recorded his first solo album, More Purple Than Black. Between 1996 and 1998 he showed how multi-talented he was when he worked as the recording engineer/editor for the Fox Sports Network. A year later in 1999, the L.A. Guns reunited to record another album and tour Europe and Japan. In 2005, Lewis worked with producer Andy Johns and another friend to record Tales From The Strip, which received great reviews. He recently released the instrumental album, Green Room, in 2010.

Lewis will join the Sin City Sinners, a band comprised of lead rock musicians that perform at different venues around Las Vegas. Guests must be 21 years or older to attend. Guests can visit http://www.mondaynightrocks.com/ for complimentary tickets.
