New Year, New Awards Earned by The Venetian and The Palazzo

THE VENETIAN AND THE PALAZZO LAS VEGAS® WELCOME 2012 WITH TOP 500 HOTELS HONOR BY TRAVEL + LEISURE READERS

This prestigious award is the third consecutive year the resorts have been honored in esteemed survey

The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas welcome the new year with another stellar accolade, this time being named one of the World’s Best 500 Hotels in 2012  in Travel + Leisure’s tenth annual T+L 500 list, based on data collected in the most recent World’s Best Awards readers’ survey. The T+L 500 awards are featured in the magazine’s January 2012 issue and on TravelandLeisure.com/tl500.

To be acknowledged on Travel + Leisure’s prestigious T+L 500 list of the World’s Best Hotels requires a property to go above and beyond guest expectations.  The awards are determined by data from the 2011 World’s Best Awards survey completed by Travel + Leisure readers. The World’s Best Awards hotel rankings are based on readers’ ratings in five categories: rooms/facilities, location, service, restaurants/food and value.

“We are deeply honored to be named in Travel + Leisure’s ‘T+L 500’ list of World’s Best Hotels,” said John Caparella, president and chief operating officer of The Palazzo, The Venetian and Sands Expo Center.  “To make this coveted list a third year in a row is a testimony to the extraordinary service we take pride in delivering to our guests.”

As the largest resort complex in the world, The Venetian and The Palazzo take pride in providing guests with an unparalleled Las Vegas experience.  The award-winning resorts are thrilled to add another distinguished honor to its roster of illustrious accolades.  In addition to this celebrated achievement, The Venetian and The Palazzo received numerous awards in 2011 alone, including the Forbes Four Star and AAA Five Diamond Award, Conde Nast Traveler Top 100 U.S. Mainland Resorts; Association Conventions & Facilities Magazine Distinctive Achievement Award; Meetings & Conventions Magazine Gold Key, Gold Key Elite and Gold Platter Awards; and Corporate & Incentive Travel Magazine Award of Excellence.

The Palazzo Las Vegas Celebrates Chinese New Year with 128-foot, Fire-Breathing Dragon

In honor of the most celebrated sign of the Chinese Zodiac, The Venetian and The Palazzo are commemorating the prosperous holiday in an over-the-top fashion. Beginning with a ceremonial dragon dance at 1 p.m. on Jan. 23, the Chinese New Year celebrations include lavish feng shui-inspired décor, auspicious dish offerings and festive cocktails.

DRAGON DANCE AND EYE PAINTING CEREMONY ON JAN. 23

Symbolizing good luck and prosperity for the upcoming year, the dragon dance is an important ritual of Chinese culture. On Monday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m., a ceremonial dragon dance complete with firecrackers and eye painting ceremony will begin at The Venetian porte cochere, making its way through The Palazzo. The colorful spectacle will feature a parade of dancers and musicians dressed in elaborate costumes playing authentic music.

FIRE-BREATHING, 128-FOOT DRAGON TO MAKE THE PALAZZO ITS HOME

The Waterfall & Atrium Gardens of The Palazzo will host Las Vegas’ premier Chinese New Year attraction as a 128-foot hand-crafted, fire-breathing dragon is suspended above in the 65-foot-high space. Spanning the entire atrium, the one-of-a-kind, 8,000-pound dragon will be perched amidst the ground fountain and breathe fire from Jan. 23 through Feb. 5 at 1 and 5 p.m. (2 p.m. on Chinese New Year Day following the dragon dance).

Regarded as the mightiest of signs, the dragon symbolizes such traits as ambition, passion and success. Those who possess the sign of the Dragon are said to take risks, are unafraid of challenges and embody colorful personalities.

“During Chinese New Year, it is beneficial to visit the dragon for its blessing and protection. It is good luck to walk around the entire dragon three times in a clockwise motion to remove obstacles for 2012,” said Peter Lung, with World of Feng Shui, who consulted on the design of the dragon. “You should build friendships with those who possess the sign of the dragon for better luck and blessings in the New Year.”

The west garden will be complete with rocks, plants and metals representing earth elements while the east garden will embody water elements with live orange Koi fish and one black fish to represent Yin and  Yang, the ancient Chinese philosophy of polar opposites being interconnected and interdependent.

“The dragon is the most powerful of the zodiac signs. We had to create something that Las Vegas would never forget,” said Dana Beatty, director of horticulture for The Venetian and The Palazzo. “From the number and location of our displays to the length and direction of the dragon, everything about the Waterfall & Atrium Gardens is feng shui-inspired, creating the perfect environment to bring wealth and prosperity in 2012.”

A secret friend to the dragon, a rooster will sit to the west of the ground fountain. The two zodiacs are compatible with one another and together bring harmony, wealth and lucky relationships.

The gardens and entrances to both The Venetian and The Palazzo will be adorned with fresh bamboo, citrus trees and 15-foot floral arrangements of tangerines, bromeliads and orchids. Nine traditional I-Ching coins, representing an abundance of wealth, will surround the dragon and Lalique statues of The Palazzo. Six-foot-tall, hand-loomed brocade silk and jade gold and red lanterns will be suspended from the atrium ceilings signifying the lives of those around to always be bright.

The larger-than-life dragon took more than 60 designers, conceptualists, welders and painters from across the globe more than a year to create and will take nearly 10 days to construct onsite.

CELEBRATE CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH AUSPICIOUS DISHES AND FESTIVE COCKTAILS

During Chinese New Year, guests can enjoy auspicious dishes at The Palazzo’s Zine Noodles Dim Sum, ranked as one of the top 10 Chinese restaurants in the U.S. by Chinese Restaurant News.

Celebrated chef Simon To has created limited-time signature dishes including Live Lobster with golden garlic and spicy salt – the word “lobster” resembles that of “dragon” in Chinese, representing positive energy; Firecracker Manila Clams, infused with Chinese white wine, fish paste and spicy roasted pepper – representing hidden treasures, the dish brings wealth into the coming year; and Buddha Feast Creation, sautéed seasonal vegetables with ginger juice – meaning “a whole, good, healthy family for the entire year.”

Guests can also enjoy refreshing infusions including a Chamomile and Lychee Ice Tea, Green Tea with Rosemary, Chili and Lemon and the signature Dragon Cocktail created from vodka, ginger liqueur, lime, a spring of tarragon, lemongrass syrup and lemon rind. These refreshing libations will be served at each of bars and lounges at The Venetian and The Palazzo.

Share #ChineseNewYear wishes on Twitter with @PalazzoLasVegas and @VenetianVegas.

The Chinese New Year décor and specialty food & beverage offerings will be available through the end of February.

*PHOTOS* Melissa Rycroft and Tye Strickland host an Ice Skating Party at Winter in Venice at The Venetian

Hollywood’s hottest couple Melissa Rycroft and Tye Strickland hosted an ice skating party at The Venetian’s Winter in Venice this afternoon. The two traveled from Dallas, Texas celebrating the holiday season as well as their second wedding anniversary.

It was a festive Saturday afternoon, as Melissa arrived to the white carpet dressed in a red chiffon top, Simon G earrings and David Lerner leggings paired with red high heels. Tye joined Melissa for photos as they stopped to meet and greet fans.

Melissa and Tye both agreed, “The Venetian is one of our favorite places to stay. Little did we know Winter in Venice is the perfect time to come!”

As soon as they saw the ice, it was “stilettos to skates” as Melissa ditched her red high heels for laced up ice skates just before joining Tye to greet the crowd wishing them all “Happy Holidays.” The two posed for photos on the ice with fans, skated around and tested out their ice skating moves.

After lots of spins and kisses on the ice, Melissa and Tye enjoyed a cup of the Winter in Venice hot chocolate from Cafe Presse as they checked out the holiday festivities. Melissa grabbed a Santa hat and Tye put on an elf hat as they were joined by the Winter in Venice holiday characters for some fun and festive photos. A stilt walker joked with Tye as he stole Melissa for a quick dance on Doge’s Palace bridge. Next, they headed over to check out the 65-foot holiday tree where Melissa told Tye, “Hah, I’m right there is a giant Christmas tree on the strip.”

Before heading inside, they made a quick stop to try some roasted chestnuts and cookie dough truffles from FIRST Food and Bar. The two ended their day relaxing and enjoying a signature holiday cocktail, Gondolier Blanco, at Laguna Champagne Bar.

The couple announced that they will have their first reality television show together which will debut in April. They have already begun filming and are very excited to share the upcoming holiday season with many.

Melissa mentioned, “Most people don’t associate the holidays with Vegas and it’s nice that we can start a new tradition and look forward to bringing Ava next year.” Tye added as he shared photos of his baby girl, “The holidays are about to change for us. It’s just been about us but now we have a little one and get to see it through her eyes.”

*PHOTOS** Mario Batali Live Cooking Demo at The Venetian

As part of the Winter in Venice celebrations at The Venetian and The Palazzo, the resorts welcomed world-renowned chef Mario Batali for a live cooking demo today at the exterior of The Venetian by the outdoor gondolas. Joking that his signature orange Crocs can’t ever come off, Batali stepped on to the ice skating rink and posed for photos with the holiday characters and guests before heading over to the wood burning oven situated on the sidewalk. The large crowd gathered and enjoyed slices of his signature pizza while he gave his cooking tips, including dough should be slowly stretched instead of tossed. Executive chef Zach Allen from Batali’s restaurants inside The Venetian and The Palazzo (Otto Enoteca Pizzeria, B&B Ristorante, and Carnevino Italian Steakhouse) was also on hand to help Batali prepare the pizza and interact with the crowd. Batali also signed copies of his cookbook, “Molto Batali: Simple Family Meals from My Home to Yours,” for lucky meet and greet winners.

Batali told the audience, “The quality of your meal is decided when you leave the store and pack your groceries in the back of the car. Fundamentally what distinguishes really great Italian food from mediocre food is the quality of the ingredients. Find stores that will let you taste the salt, the oil and the tomatoes so you can find the food that best suits your particular palate.”
