The Venetian Las Vegas Announces the Debut of Tony Award-Winning Actor Kiril Kulish in “BAZ – A Musical Mash-Up”

The Venetian® and The Palazzo® will welcome Tony Award-winning actor Kiril Kulish to “BAZ – A Musical Mash-Up” on Tuesday, Dec. 26. Kulish, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his performance in Broadway’s “Billy Elliot the Musical,” will play the role of Scott the Ballroom Dancer in the hit Las Vegas production. In addition to being a ballroom and ballet champion, Kulish was featured in season 22 of “Dancing with the Stars,” as a professional dancer in the show’s troupe.

“I’m elated to join the cast of ‘BAZ’ and perform for Las Vegas audiences,” said Kulish. “The show is unlike any other with its unique blend of music, dance, and raw emotion and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Born in San Diego, Kulish caught the performance bug early and by age 13 had become a three-time U.S. National Latin Ballroom Champion and two-time World Ballet Champion. In 2008, he landed the title role in “Billy Elliot the Musical” on Broadway, and went on to star in “The Real Love” and “The Silent Tears” at the Shrine Auditorium. Kulish has been featured on “Good Morning America,” “The View,” “Live with Regis and Kelly,” and more. Most recently, he choreographed a show at the renowned Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.

“BAZ – A Musical Mash-Up” is a new-generation cabaret and high-energy movie-music mash-up that blends the world’s most iconic love stories as imagined by famed film visionary Baz Luhrmann. Inspired by Luhrmann’s signature take on “Romeo + Juliet,” “Moulin Rouge,” and “The Great Gatsby,” this theatrical concert features soul-stirring and stunning performances from an ensemble cast and band.

More than five years in the making, “BAZ – A Musical Mash-Up” is the creation of For The Record, a genre-bending theatrical company in Los Angeles with a vision of turning the soundtracks of iconic filmmakers into immersive theatrical concert experiences.

“BAZ – A Musical Mash-Up” performs Tuesday through Sunday at 7 p.m. at The Palazzo Theatre. Tickets start at $59 (plus tax and applicable fees) and can be purchased at any box office at The Venetian or The Palazzo, online at palazzo.com, or by calling 702.414.9000 or 866.641.7469.

Routinely ranked on “Best Steakhouse” lists since opening in 2007, Carnevino has accumulated countless accolades and hosted hundreds of celebrations and special events. In 10 years, Carnevino has amassed an impressive list of statistical achievements including:

  • Carnevino has served more than 400,000 steaks to guests since opening.
  • More than one million guests have dined in Carnevino’s four dining rooms.
  • Guests have ordered more than 100,000 ribeyes. If placed end to end, this would result in approximately 17,000 feet of ribeyes, which is nearly the height of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,031 feet).
  • The beef cheek ravioli remains a favorite. This dish has been ordered more than 34,000 times, which is impressive considering it has never been on the menu. Batali originally created the popular pasta dish when he appeared on Food Network’s “Iron Chef.”
  • At Carnevino’s off-site dry aging facility, more than 300 tons of ribeyes have been dry-aged.

Representing Spain, Anthony Sasso from New York City’s Michelin-starred Casa Mono and La Sirena Ristorante will battle Carnevino’s very own Arnold Corpuz, representing Italy, for a seven-course menu and wine pairing.

This dinner represents the newest installment of the guest chef dinner series at Carnevino Italian Steakhouse at The Palazzo. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Sasso’s inspiration comes from his deeply rooted Spanish heritage that shaped his upbringing and career. After returning from multiple trips to his family’s small village in Catalunya, Spain, Sasso became an ambassador of classic Spanish cuisine and local Catalan specialties, incorporating them into his work as executive chef at two Michelin-starred New York City restaurants. Tomorrow, Celebrate National Pizza Day & Mardi Gras at OTTO Enoteca e Pizzeria at The Venetian

otto
CELEBRATE NATIONAL PIZZA DAY ON FEB. 9 AT OTTO ENOTECA E PIZZERIA

OTTO to Combine Pizza and Mardi Gras for a Special One-Day-Only Tasso Ham Pizza

Tomorrow, celebrate National Pizza Day at Las Vegas’ top-rated OTTO Enoteca e Pizzeria at The Venetian. OTTO is Mario Batali’s signature pizza restaurant and known for its ever-evolving menu of thin crust Roman-style pizzas, antipasti meats and cheeses, salads, pastas and main dishes.

OTTO will be celebrating National Pizza Day as only they can: by adding some festive Mardi Gras touches to their festive Tasso Ham Pizza ($21) that will only be available on Feb. 9. The pizza will feature house-cured and smoked Tasso ham, which is actually a cured and smoked pork shoulder (not ham) rubbed with a Cajun-style spice mixture containing cayenne, garlic and other spices. Pickled peppers and Buffalo mozzarella complete the pizza.

PIZZA FUN FACTS

Since opening in 2007, OTTO has sold close to 500,000 pizzas, averaging just more than a 1,000 a week.

One of their top sellers remains the Margherita with tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil. This pizza is so popular, it sells out its two closest rivals, sausage-and-peppers and pepperoni, almost two to one. Although it is not one of the best-selling pizzas, one of the most unique dishes served at OTTO is the pancetta and goat cheese pizza, topped with caramelized onions and Cypress Grove cheese.

OTTO is also known for its seasonal pizzas. Utilizing only the freshest ingredients of the season, the current pizza for winter is its Brussels sprouts pizza. Along with mozzarella and prosciutto, the pizza is topped with preserved lemon rinds that provide an extra citrus kick to this scrumptious dish. The pizza will be available through the end of February.
Finally, OTTO stacks the pizza dough to proof for 24 hours, resting in boxes that are 3.5 inches tall. If all the dough for all 500,000 pizzas OTTO has sold since it opened was placed one dozen to the box to proof and then stacked, all of the boxes would be as tall as 10 ½ Stratosphere Towers or 12,152 feet high (200 feet taller than the top of Mt. Charleston from sea level).

\Sit among chefs while noshing on small dishes inspired by the cookbooks that now fill Andre’s new Cigar Lounge and Culinary Library. Located on the second floor of Andre’s Restaurant & Lounge at Monte Carlo Resort and Casino, this is the only library of its kind and designed specifically for chefs and foodies. The library consists of Chef André Rochat’s personal collection of cookbooks, amassed over the course of his more than 55 years in the culinary industry. Nearly 700 books are on display and available for guests to read while they experience this menu. Subjects include baking and pastry, wine and spirits, restaurant architecture, celebrity chefs and much more. The library debut is a part of the milestone celebration for Rochat, who in 2015 celebrates 35 years since opening his first restaurant, Andre’s Downtown, in Las Vegas.

Executive Chef Christopher Bulen and his team were inspired by the cookbooks, creating the dishes based on their selections. Below is a snapshot of the dishes, along with Chef Bulen’s explanation behind the inspiration:

Pickled Vegetables
Inspired by “Gramercy Tavern Cookbook” by Michael Anthony
“While visiting New York last year with Joseph Marsco (director of operations and managing partner) and Patrick Trundle (director of beverages), we dined at Gramercy Tavern. One of the first plates was their raw and pickled vegetable plate. After reading the ‘Gramercy Tavern Cookbook’ upon our return, I could see how important pickled vegetables are to their menu and the vast and interesting applications they were using. Our small plate uses multiple different seasonal vegetables, complimented with a 5-herb sauce. You get the taste of each vegetable with the sharpness of the pickling and the sauce provides a fresh and herbaceous flavor.”

Lamb Sausage
Inspired by “The Art of Charcuterie” by The Culinary Institute of America and John Kowalski
“I had the privilege of learning how to make sausage first hand with Chef André Rochat. He explained the process, thoughts and techniques behind creating a good sausage. Since then, at Andre’s, we have been making different kinds sausages for nearly every menu and this menu is no exception. We chose a lamb sausage with summer being the perfect season for it. The taste of the sausage itself is more fragrant with subtle spices notes. Finally, we are pairing it with a curried slaw to give the dish a nice zing of heat without overpowering the palate.”

Caponata
Inspired from “Mozza Cookbook” by Mario Batali
“This traditional Sicilian eggplant dish has a similar partner in French cuisine known as ratatouille. One of the main differences is the addition of sugar and vinegar, giving the roasted vegetable dish an additional sweet and tangy finish. We also add a few ingredients to put our own twist on it, including capers and crispy anchovies. We enjoy this dish because of its robust flavor of the vegetables and its heartiness. It’s ideal as a starting point of a meal which makes it a popular item for this menu without filling up our guests before their appetizers.”

Each dish is priced at $10. By request, cocktails and cigars can be paired with these dishes.

In addition to the cookbooks, Andre’s Cigar Lounge and Culinary Library features a collection of more than 200 single-malt Cognacs, Armagnacs and scotches, as well as premium cigar varieties. The collection is the largest of its kind in Las Vegas and is ranked third in North America based on its size. Already considered a “hidden gem” by those in the hospitality industry, the lounge originally opened in 1996 along with the award-winning, AAA Four Diamond restaurant. The intimate lounge comfortably seats 36 guests and also houses a state-of-the-art ventilation and air filtration system enabling cigar aficionados to enjoy their evening without smoke disrupting nearby dinner or library guests.

Andre’s Cigar Lounge and Culinary Library is open Tuesday through Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to close.

The Venetian® and The Palazzo® Las Vegas Host Winter In Venice™ Holiday Celebration

THE VENETIAN® AND THE PALAZZO® LAS VEGAS HOST
WINTER IN VENICE™ HOLIDAY CELEBRATION

One-of-a-kind celebration features 50 days of Italian-inspired holiday festivities, including a new nightly parade, ‘golden spoon’ chef competition, and special performances by famed Mannheim Steamroller

The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas are home to Winter in Venice™, the second-annual celebration of the winter holiday season on the Las Vegas Strip, dubbed “A Gift of The Venetian.”  With 50 days of seasonal experiences throughout both resorts, Winter in Venice is the ultimate destination for a holiday getaway, running Nov. 18, 2012 through Jan. 6, 2013.

In 2012, Winter in Venice will feature a new marquee element, an exclusive six-week run of “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Las Vegas, by Chip Davis,” featuring beloved and iconic holiday music in The Palazzo Theatre.    In addition, a schedule of memorable Italian-inspired experiences will include a nightly enchanting winter parade, whimsical tree-lighting ceremonies, a stunning new 3D light projection shows, an elaborate Winter In Venice fantasy scene in The Palazzo Waterfall Gardens, and – a fan favorite – the return of the picturesque skating rink above The Venetian’s romantic outdoor Grand Canal.

In its first year, Winter in Venice captured the attention – and the hearts – of visitors around the world, including Travel + Leisure magazine.  In fact, the prestigious publication touted the Winter In Venice skating rink in its feature on the “world’s coolest skating rinks.”  The article, which shared a short list of the magazine’s favorite venues, said:  “Some of the coolest [rinks] can be found where you’d least expect them—say, in the desert. The Venetian [in Las Vegas] debuted a rink in 2011, complete with a holiday-theme light show. It now touts a package deal that combines a skating session with an outdoor gondola ride—only in Vegas, indeed”.

“The holidays are such a magical time for everyone and Winter in Venice offers the perfect place to truly enjoy this special time of year,” said John Caparella, president and chief operating officer of The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo.

The best way to experience Winter in Venice is by staying overnight at The Venetian or The Palazzo, taking advantage of additional experiences available to resort guests.  Packages, which combine elements of Winter in Venice, begin at $149 per night.

Overnight guests also receive Passaporto di Winter in Venice, which includes specials for skating, retail, dining, entertainment and spa, with offers valued at more than $1,000.  For those who book an upgraded suite, a Premiere Passaporto di Winter in Venice will feature additional exclusive offers increasing the value to more than $1,400.

Those guests staying overnight can expect festive holiday touches including warm apple cider upon arrival and a sincere “Welcome to Winter in Venice” greeting. Strolling carolers and gondoliers singing holiday classics will set the mood as festive music plays throughout the resorts with joyful winter décor inside and out.

A New Storyline
“Winter in Venice finds its inspiration in the folklore and tales that generations of Italians have grown to know and love,” said Caparella. “Those stories have filled the imaginations of generations of Venetians with the experiences of festive holiday seasons coupled with the long-treasured spirit of giving and sharing. Within these tales are the characters that exemplify the good will, the fun and the excitement of the season.”

Throughout the 50-day celebration, guests will encounter these new characters — including the stunning Winter in Venice Queen — in entertaining ways, including the nightly parade, tree-lighting shows, and the new “Light of Venice” 3D light projection show.

Doge’s Palace and Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
The Venetian’s front exterior will be adorned in winter schemes reminiscent of the fabled city of Venice. Thousands of festooned lights will hang over the majestic ice skating rink as larger-than-life snowflakes, ranging from 48 to 72-inches in diameter, surround the façade of The Venetian.  The impressive skating surface is made of environmentally-friendly material playfully called “ven-ICE,” which doesn’t require electricity or refrigeration.  The surface is actually not made of ice at all, but a state-of-the-art recycled polymer, part of the resort’s industry-leading green initiatives.  On the canal, romance is in the air, as skaters are invited to make figure-eights or glide hand-in-hand with loved ones.  Nearby, an awe-inspiring 65-foot LED Christmas tree presides over Doge’s Palace, and guests are entertained by strolling entertainers.

With gondoliers whisking by and strolling winter characters all around, guests can enjoy the outdoor ice skating rink from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily.   Throughout the season, special ice skating exhibition performances can also be seen on the rink, including Surya Bonaly, Olympic silver medalist on Nov. 18.

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas
As a marquee addition to Winter in Venice, Grammy Award®-winning composer/musician Chip Davis will bring his award-winning holiday production, “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Las Vegas by Chip Davis,” to The Palazzo Theater for a six week exclusive run beginning Nov. 20.

Recognized as one of the nation’s “Top 20 Concert Tours” by Pollstar in 2011, Mannheim Steamroller by Chip Davis, with the help of MagicSpace Entertainment, has turned their recognizable holiday music into a headlining show featuring the favorite Christmas music of Mannheim Steamroller. Now in their 27th season, Davis is taking his holiday tour to new heights with a brand new Vegas edition of the already spectacular show.

The group’s renowned program of signature Christmas classics, along with state-of-the-art multimedia effects, is being expanded specifically for Mannheim’s first-ever run in Las Vegas.  Davis and his “technical wizards” have added choreography, aerial and other new elements to create an unforgettable holiday experience

Known for revolutionizing the sounds of the Christmas, Davis has catapulted over the last three decades into becoming the number one Christmas music artist in the world. His combination of classical compositions and rock rhythms has transformed the holiday music season into the celebrated industry it is today. Since the release of his first Christmas album in 1984, he has continued to combine the group’s signature mix of Renaissance instruments with rock & roll beats.

Ticket prices range from $64 (plus tax) to $124 (plus tax). Tickets are available by calling The Palazzo Box Office at (866) 641-7469 or (702) 414-9000, or online at Palazzo.com.

Nightly Holiday Parade, Light Show and Tree Lighting
Each evening at 6 and 8pm, a new parade will wind through The Venetian’s Doge’s Palace plaza, featuring characters from the Winter in Venice celebration.   The whimsical and elaborate designs will help to set the stage for the evening’s entertainment, and will offer the perfect photo opportunity for a post to Facebook or Twitter.

Preceding the parade, seasonal storylines will be projected in another way – in glorious 3D – in the technical marvel “Light of Venice.”  This spectacular 3D projection show that transforms the architecture of the iconic clock tower using state-of-the-art digital technology. The show will conclude with a live finale that will illuminate the iconic plaza, including the 65-foot Christmas tree.

In addition, guests will enjoy strolling musicians and special entertainment performances scheduled throughout the 50-day celebration.

Golden Spoon Chef Competition
What’s an Italian festival without food?  As part of Winter in Venice, guests can witness the rise of a culinary legend, as one resort chef is crowned the winner of the first The Venetian Golden Spoon Master Chef Competition.

The competition, which unfolds on Nov. 30, Dec. 7, 14 and 21,  is open to all Sous Chefs and Chefs de Cuisine at the 30+ restaurants located inside The Venetian and The Palazzo.  These chefs will vie for the prestige of THE VENETIAN GOLDEN SPOON AWARD.

Chefs will be challenged to create recipes using ingredients provided in a “mystery basket,” to be prepared in mobile “food truck” kitchens, located at The Venetian’s Doge’s Palace.  Each chef’s creation will then be available for sale.

Expect plenty of surprises, including guest appearances by The Venetian and The Palazzo’s celebrity chefs Emeril Lagasse, Mario Batali, Joe Bastianich and Sammy DeMarco.

“A Winter in Venice Fantasy” at The Waterfall Gardens
The Waterfall Gardens at The Palazzo will be transformed into an elaborate show-stopping fantasy display, a creation of The Palazzo’s award-winning horticulture team.

“Our goal is for our guests to simply say one word when they enter this atrium – wow!” said Caparella.  “This isn’t a traditional holiday display.  We couldn’t find a better way to describe it than a ‘Winter in Venice Fantasy.’”

Ice branches and 20-foot frosted birch, pine and glittering trees will complement the picturesque scene, including the waterfall and crystal “ice” ponds.  Majestic hand-crafted white and pearl peacock statues will overlook guests.  The winter gardens will also feature red beaded ornaments, pinecones and fresh poinsettias.

Food & Beverage
A seasonal Winter in Venice cocktail menu, including holiday-inspired spiced cocktails such asGondolier Blanco, Da Vinci Remedy, and Pom Prosecco will be available throughout the resort lounges, including The Bourbon Room, Zebra Lounge, Bellini Bar, Fusion Mixology Bar and Laguna Champagne Bar.

Those looking for more exotic flavors didn’t have to travel far to find TAO’s tuna tenaki with wasabi salsa, Diego’s huitlacoche braised beef tacos and Bacio’s conchiglie con gamberi e arugula.

The three restaurants of celebrity chef and restaurateurs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianch, Carnevino, B&B Ristorante and Otto Enoteca, were combined into one booth while other favorites included Craftsteak’s beef tenderloin carpaccio with argula, parmesan and asparagus and Public House’s rabbit loin in porchetta with duck rillette fritter and raspberry passion fruit verrine.

Laguna Champagne Bar kept the bubbly flowing from the center bar with their signature Flower Eclipse champagne cocktail and a touch screen “Smart Bar” poured perfectly concocted libations. Diageo set up an ultra-lounge in Azure Pool’s rotunda where guests posed for silly photo booth pictures.

Sweet endings came from The Cupcakery’s mini cupcakes, Hash House a Go Go with strawberry shortcake and their ever-popular kiwi watermelon drink, Bouchon’s key lime pie parfait and Canyon Ranch Grill’s orange ginger mousse with praline.

Other participating restaurants included Mint Indian Bistro, Gilley’s Saloon, Delmonico Steakhouse, Maggiano’s, Origin India, Zine Noodles Dim Sum, Ferraro’s, FIRST Food & Bar, Double Helix, CUT by Wolfgang Puck, Postrio Bar & Grill, Aquaknox, Taqueria Canonita, Fogo de Chao, Beam Global, Il Mulino and SUSHISAMBA.

As part of the Winter in Venice celebrations at The Venetian and The Palazzo, the resorts welcomed world-renowned chef Mario Batali for a live cooking demo today at the exterior of The Venetian by the outdoor gondolas. Joking that his signature orange Crocs can’t ever come off, Batali stepped on to the ice skating rink and posed for photos with the holiday characters and guests before heading over to the wood burning oven situated on the sidewalk. The large crowd gathered and enjoyed slices of his signature pizza while he gave his cooking tips, including dough should be slowly stretched instead of tossed. Executive chef Zach Allen from Batali’s restaurants inside The Venetian and The Palazzo (Otto Enoteca Pizzeria, B&B Ristorante, and Carnevino Italian Steakhouse) was also on hand to help Batali prepare the pizza and interact with the crowd. Batali also signed copies of his cookbook, “Molto Batali: Simple Family Meals from My Home to Yours,” for lucky meet and greet winners.

Batali told the audience, “The quality of your meal is decided when you leave the store and pack your groceries in the back of the car. Fundamentally what distinguishes really great Italian food from mediocre food is the quality of the ingredients. Find stores that will let you taste the salt, the oil and the tomatoes so you can find the food that best suits your particular palate.”
