Deeply insightful rock photography: Live Design International and A.C.T Lighting present, ‘In the Eye of the Rock‘n’Roll Hurricane,’ which travels through 45 years of rock history

 NP_PlantDove_v2 (1)

American photographer Neal Preston is one of the greats of international music photography. From Bruce Springsteen to Led Zeppelin, from Mick Jagger to Queen, his subjects read like a Who’s Who of music icons. “In the Eye of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hurricane,” one of the largest rock’n’roll photography exhibitions ever in the US, is scheduled to run Friday October 23, 2015 through Sunday October 25, 2015.  Visitors to the LDI Conference and Tradeshow as well as the general public will have a chance to visit the exhibition.

This world-touring exhibition is provided by the Lightpower Collection. Lightpower is the leading distributor of stage and studio lighting equipment in Europe, established in 1978. The exhibition  offers a unique insight into 45 years of rock history, showcasing powerful, intimate images that capture musicians in their creative and personal environments and are authentic testimonies of life, with its highs and lows, on and behind the stage. The multi-media exhibition features over 70 works from this iconic artist. Although many of the photographs that will be showcased at LDI have appeared previously in international magazines and books, in countless television programs and album artwork, the exhibition also includes works that have never previously been seen in the States.

The exhibition is presented by A.C.T Lighting, the leading North American importer and distributor of entertainment lighting technology products, and LDI International, the leading global tradeshow and conference for live design professionals.

“Our industry is built around supporting and spotlighting the talent of such acts as AC/DC, Queen, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and the full spectrum of bands throughout the 20th and 21st centuries,” explains David Johnson, Managing Director of Live Design and LDI. “This exhibit gives us an opportunity to see the people behind the legendary shows, to get a glimpse of true greatness up close and personal.”

The exhibition, where Neal Preston will be in attendance, also includes insights from the artist himself into his creative work. “We have created something much greater than just a collection of fine-art music photography prints. This is a living, breathing exhibition on a grand scale where the pictures seems to come alive, and capture the same excitement and passion that I felt – and still feel – while photographing the most legendary, iconic artists in rock ‘n’ roll history,” says Neal Preston.

“Our goal is for the viewer to have a visceral experience, and through the photographs be able to actually feel the power and energy of being on stage performing for tens of thousands of people, and then feel what it’s like backstage, touring at a grueling pace, and more,” he explains. “The Lightpower Collection has put together a truly unique photography exhibition that captures the magic of those incredible times – and it has made me realize how fortunate I have been to have been given the opportunity to document all of this from the inside out.”

The exhibition is also emphasizes the organizers’ commitment to the global event industry. All proceeds generated by the sale of fine art prints and other ancillary merchandise will be included in a donation to the Behind the Scenes charity, which provides financial support to entertainment technology industry professionals when they are ill or injured or to their surviving family members. Behind the Scenes brings help and hope in times of great need.

Ben Saltzman, President and CEO of A.C.T Lighting, concludes, “It’s an honor to collaborate with our closest partners to present such an iconic representation of the history of rock ‘n’ roll, and we’re especially proud to do so during our industry’s premier showcase. This exhibition of Neal Preston’s work exemplifies the highest level of passion, artistry and achievement.”

ABOUT ROBERT PLANT
Robert Plant and the Sensational Space Shifters have announced their 2015 tour. Kicking off Sunday, May 24, at the Sasquatch! Festival in George, WA, the dates include his return to Bonnaroo the weekend of June 12, and finish off on June 17 in Philadelphia, PA, at the Mann Center. The complete itinerary is below. Tickets will go on sale starting Friday, March 20 at 10am ET via robertplant.com. Each ticket to the non-festival shows will include a CD of the band’s latest album, lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar. The Pixies will be opening five of these shows; JD McPherson four of them, as noted below in the itinerary. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets for the Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, CA performances from Wednesday, March 18 at 10am PT through Thursday, March 19 at 10pm PT. For more information, please visit citiprivatepass.com.

The tour is in support of Robert Plant’s lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar, which was released September 2014 on Nonesuch/Warner Bros. Records. The record was named one of the top 50 albums of the year by NPR, which said, “At 66, the singer is still a majestic rock presence, at peace with the legacy of his hard-rock-defining band Led Zeppelin, while remaining relentlessly creative in his solo work. But on his 10th solo album, Plant does pause by those waters to consider the aesthetic, emotional and spiritual currents that have shaped his illustrious life. He finds himself, characteristically, not saddened but renewed… Not one of these songs sounds precisely like its source; that’s the genius of this album. It lovingly layers elements in ways that mirror memory, creating new constructs from floating shards of the musical past.”

Plant described lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar as, “a celebratory record, powerful, gritty, African, Trance meets Zep.” He continues, “The whole impetus of my life as a singer has to be driven by a good brotherhood. I am very lucky to work with The Sensational Space Shifters. They come from exciting areas of contemporary music…” The Sensational Space Shifters are Justin Adams: bendirs, djembe, guitars, tehardant, background vocals; John Baggott: keyboards, loops, moog bass, piano, tabal, background vocals; Juldeh Camara: kologo, ritti, Fulani vocals; Billy Fuller: bass, drum programming, omnichord, upright bass; Dave Smith: drum set; and Liam “Skin” Tyson: banjo, guitar, background vocals.

The album received some of the best reviews of Plant’s solo career, with the Wall Street Journal saying, “Robert Plant knows where rock’s past begins and he’s pulling it into the future,” and the New York Times stating that “On lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar, Mr. Plant often sings in an otherworldly voice: sustained, androgynous, balanced between serenity and ache.” Pitchfork noted that “Lullaby sees Plant stepping up with his first batch of original songs in nearly a decade, answering his band’s derring-do with some of the most bravely confessional writing of his career,” while Noisey raved, “Plant’s aged gracefully, growing into a sound that’s more finessed and even, at times, elegant. These aren’t the recordings of some old dude lost in a music studio messing around with the funny-shaped knobs on a mixer. Plant’s still got it, using his experience and vision to blend sounds of the world with blues to form music that’s weirdly cohesive and progressive, all supporting his distinguished and defined voice.”

Nonesuch/Warner Bros. releases a Record Store Day exclusive EP by Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters on Saturday April 18. Entitled More Roar, the record features three tracks on black 10” vinyl recorded live during the group’s World Tour 2014: Side A will be “Turn It Up” / “Arbaden” and side B will be “Poor Howard” and “Whole Lotta Love (Medley).” The EP will be limited to 10,000 copies.

ABOUT ALABAMA SHAKES:
The story of the Alabama Shakes begins in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama. Brittany Howard, who had started playing guitar a few years earlier, approached Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together. “I just knew that he played bass and that he wore shirts with cool bands on them that nobody had heard of,” says Howard.

They started to meet up after school and write songs sitting on Howard’s floor. “It had that rootsy feel, but there was some out-there stuff,” says Cockrell. “David Bowie-style things, prog-rock, lots of different stuff. We started to come across our own sound a little bit, though it’s evolved a lot since then.”

Steve Johnson worked at the only music store in town, and Howard knew he played the drums. She invited him to a party where, she says, “he met everybody from our side of the tracks.” The three young musicians began working together, further expanding their style and approach. “Steve is kind of a punk-metal drummer,” says Howard, “so we embraced that edge he brings to everything he does.”

The trio soon went into a studio in Decatur to record some of the songs they were working up, and this proto-demo found its way into the hands of Heath Fogg, with whom Howard had been familiar because he had been the lead guitarist in what she describes as “the best band in our high school.” Fogg, who by now had graduated from college, asked them to open a show for his band, which they agreed to do – on the condition that he play with them. The response was immediate: “That first show was really explosive,” says Howard.”

Though they had been focusing on original material (“It’s just more fun to write than to learn someone else’s music,” says Cockrell), as the band – newly christened the Shakes – began playing out, they added more cover songs. They played classics by James Brown and Otis Redding, but also by Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. “We had to find music we could all agree on and figure out how to play together,” says Howard, “and that had a lot of influence on how we play now.”

Attempting to record their songs with the honest sonic qualities they cherished, the Shakes bought a few microphones and a vintage Teac mixing board and set up in Howard’s house – which didn’t work, since she lived right next to some railroad tracks. They eventually found their way to a Nashville studio in early 2011, where the songs they cut included “You Ain’t Alone” and “I Found You.”

When they appeared at a Nashville record store, people started to take notice of the group’s relentless, hard-charging live attack, and Howard’s magnetic stage presence. One especially ardent fan raved about the band to his friends, which included Justin Gage, the founder of the Aquarium Drunkard blog. Gage wrote to Howard, asking if he could post one of the Shakes’ songs. She sent back the yearning, intense “You Ain’t Alone,” which he put up in late July, calling it “a slice of the real.” And, literally overnight, all hell broke loose.

“I woke up the next day to emails from record labels, managers, publishing companies,” says Howard. “At first I thought, everybody’s making a mistake!” Gage also emailed “You Ain’t Alone” to the Drive-By Truckers’ team. The band was immediately blown away and offered the Shakes an opening slot, sight unseen. (Patterson Hood of the Truckers later noted that the group “totally blew us off the stage in Winston-Salem.”)

Yet even as the attention and the pressure were mounting, the band – who by now had changed their name to the Alabama Shakes – continued to break new ground musically. Their first single, the hypnotic, show-stopping plea “Hold On,” grew out of an on-stage improvisation. “We threw out that riff,” says Cockrell, “and Brittany started singing along, and the crowd started singing with her like it was a song they already knew.”

In October, the Shakes gave a performance at the CMJ Festival in New York City that earned a glowing review from the New York Times. Jon Pareles described the band as “a thunderbolt dressed in bluejeans,” with music that’s “aching when it’s slow and growling and whooping when it’s fast.” NPR named them one of the best bands of 2011, while MTV called them one of the top bands to look for in 2012.

As word of mouth spread, more offers to tour came in, and the band members were finally able to quit their day jobs; until this point, all the writing, recording, and touring had to be done around such responsibilities as Howard’s work as a mail carrier and Johnson’s hours toiling as a night watchman at a nuclear power plant.

Now, with expectations at fever pitch, the Alabama Shakes have delivered Boys & Girls – six of the songs from that initial Nashville session, and another five recorded during the rest of the year. From the heart-rending title song to such stomps as “Rise to the Sun,” the album demonstrates the sense of groove and space the band learned from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply can’t be learned.

Overwhelmed by the response they’ve already received, there is one perception of the band that they want to challenge. “A lot of people think we’re a soul revival act,” says Cockrell. “That’s an honor to me, classic R&B is my favorite kind of music, but everybody has their own influences. Brittany is way more into rock and roll – she likes things pretty amped up most of the time.”

“Retro soul is not what we’re going for, though it’s understandable why people say it,” says Howard. “We take inspiration from that, but we all understand Black Sabbath, too. On the record, we left a lot of room for whatever we want to do in the future.”

The release of Boys & Girls marks the arrival of a major new rock and roll band. To the members themselves, though, what’s been most exciting has been the reaction they have felt on stage, whether tiny local dates or under the glare of the media.

“It seems like everyone can tell how into it we are,” says Cockrell. “Every show, people say they can feel how much we love what we’re doing.”

Since opening in March 2014, Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas has seen notable performances by Elvis Costello & The Roots, Jane’s Addiction, Phil Lesh & Friends, Primus, O.A.R. and 21 Pilots.

The original location opened in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn in 2009 in the former Hecla Iron Works building (built in 1882) and was the first L.E.E.D. certified bowling alley in the world. Brooklyn Bowl New York has hosted countless notable performances, including shows by Kanye West, Adele, Paul Simon, Moby and Guns N’Roses and has been named Zagat’s “Best Music Venue – New York City” for three consecutive years (as well as “Best Bowling Alley” and “Best Brooklyn Venue”) and one of the best clubs in America by Rolling Stone.  Eater described their menu as “epic,” while The New Yorker hailed the club’s unprecedented combination of top-flight music, beer, bowling, and food as “like nailing a spare on a four-ten split.” The second Brooklyn Bowl location opened in January 2014 at The O2 in London, and was hailed by The London Evening Standard as a “…wonderland of food, drink, music and pins”.

The Cult at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, April 19

THE CULT
WITH SPECIAL GUEST

SATURDAY, APRIL 19 AT 8PM

Tickets on-sale Friday at 10am!

British rockers, The Cult, are one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the late 20th century, selling millions of albums, headlining arenas and stadiums around the world, infusing innovative possibilities into the worlds of music and art, and quickly ascending through the ranks of the indie music world to achieve global status. And now, for one night only, they’ll be taking over The Joint. The Cult will rock out The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on Saturday, April 19. Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10am.

As early as its first American tour in 1984, The Cult became one of the handful of important bands in the U.S. post-modern and hard rock communities.  The band was embraced by the lost children of The Doors and Velvet Underground, and a generation that was waking up to the influence of 60s and 70s rock icons like Led Zeppelin, The New York Dolls and David Bowie.

Formed in Brixton, London in 1983 as Death Cult, The Cult’s music transformed from punk rock to post-punk, psychedelia, heavy dance music, and transcendental hard rock.  As one journalist noted, “Using a few simple riffs and images, The Cult creates an entire environment, one more exciting and stimulating than our own.”

The constant core of The Cult is vocalist/lyricist Ian Astbury and guitarist/composer Billy Duffy.  Attitude incarnate, the chemistry between these two vastly different artists – equal-parts genuine affection and palpable tension – remains the source of their long-standing partnership.  Duffy grounds Astbury’s esoteric side with a hard rock perspective, and there is no doubt that at all times, these two have each other’s backs.

On June 20, 2013, the band released Electric-Peace. It’s the Electric album in its entirety plus the Peace album.

For more information visit, www.thecult.us

Tickets, starting at $39.50 (plus applicable service fees), go on sale Friday at 10am at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, online at AXS.com or by calling 888-9-AXS-TIX..

LVH – LAS VEGAS HOTEL & CASINO

The LVH – Las Vegas Hotel & Casino is excited to announce that its spectacular show, “Raiding the Rock Vault,” has signed a long term agreement to continue through 2014.

“Raiding the Rock Vault” opened in March 2013 and has consistently received critical and audience acclaim, as well as having been rated Vegas’ #1 Show.  The show will reopen on January 24, 2014.

“The LVH is beyond thrilled to have “Raiding the Rock Vault” continue in 2014,” said LVH Vice President of Entertainment, Rick White.  “The show promises to only get bigger and better this year with new cast members, songs and guest stars.  We truly believe it’s going to continue to be known as THE must-see show for visitors and locals alike.”

“We are honored to bring this incredible musical extravaganza back to the legendary stage which was the home of long term residencies by Elvis Presley, Liberace and Barry Manilow, as well as concert performances by many of the top rock, pop and country artists of all time,” said “Raiding the Rock Vault” producer Sir Harry Cowell.

This amazing concert experience brings the history of rock ‘n’ roll to life with an all-star super group of musicians the likes of which is not seen anywhere in Las Vegas.  The legendary classic rock songs of the `60s, `70s and `80s that everyone immediately recognizes – anthems for a generation – are played with stunning accuracy by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Howard Leese [Guitar] (Heart), sensational guitar player Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), phenomenal vocalists John Payne [Lead Vocals and Bass] (Asia), Robin McAuley [Lead Vocals] (MSG, Survivor), Paul Shortino [Lead Vocals] (Rough Cutt, Quite Riot), Andrew Freeman [Lead Vocals and Guitars] (Lynch Mob, The Offspring), extraordinary drummer Jay Schellen (Badfinger, Asia), and keyboard whiz Michael T. The show itself revolves around the “Rock Vault,” a giant capsule found in the distant future and opened to reveal the history of classic rock.  Entertaining vignettes by actors, narration by acclaimed actor Richard Malmos, and historical videos on giant screens help move the story through time.  The show is, of course, highlighted by electrfying performances of rock classics from The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Free, The Eagles, Queen, Boston, Kansas, U2, Van Halen, AC/DC, Foreigner, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, Supertramp, and many, many more.

Written by musician, producer and vocalist, John Payne (Asia), and Grammy Award-winning record producer David Kershenbaum (Joe Jackson, Tracy Chapman, Supertramp) “Raiding the Rock Vault” was born to give audiences an illuminating look at the history of rock and, for those who lived it, an exciting trip down memory lane.
