Toast the New Year during the Downtown Countdown New Year’s Eve 2016 Celebration taking place Thursday, Dec. 31 from 5:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. at Fremont Street Experience in fabulous Downtown Las Vegas. This year the ultimate New Year’s Eve street party is themed TributePalooza and features 13 of the world’s greatest tribute bands. These tribute bands include: Rio (Duran Duran), Generation Idol (Billy Idol), Fan Halen (Van Halen), No Duh (No Doubt), Red Not Chili Peppers (Red Hot Chili Peppers), The Rising (Bruce Springsteen), Police Experience (The Police), Rockin the Paradice (Styx), Wanted (Bon Jovi), The Who Generation (The Who) Pyromania (Def Leppard), Double Vision (Foreigner) and Don’t Look Back (Boston).
The TributePalooza celebration kicks off with a Dec. 30 pre-party, featuring seven tribute bands under the FSE canopy. The headliner event is Dec. 31, with 13 bands featured. Then seven bands will continue the four-day party on Jan. 1-2. The concerts will begin at 5:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and at 5 p.m. on the other nights.
“This is definitely the place to ring in the New Year,” says Fremont Street Experience Director of Marketing Tom Bruny. “With the four blocks of Fremont Street Experience jam-packed with 13 tribute bands on three stages and crowds expected to reach up to 30,000 people, this has become the ultimate street party. We will also be starting with free concerts at our pre-party on Wednesday and our after-party on Friday and Saturday will continue the four-day celebration.”
On New Year’s Eve, just before midnight, revelers will say goodbye to 2015 with a year-in-review retrospective on the Viva Vision screen and a midnight countdown led by Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman. Immediately following will be Fireworks by Grucci under the Viva Vision canopy as part of the citywide celebration, “America’s Party: Las Vegas New Year’s 2016.”
Admission to Downtown Countdown on New Year’s Eve is $30 per person when purchased online by Dec. 25. Beginning Dec. 26 tickets will be $40
per person and can be purchased online, in-person at any of the Fremont Street Experience member hotel-casinos, or at the event gates on Dec. 31. New Year’s Eve is the only night of the year when Fremont Street Experience has paid, ticketed admission. Eddie Griffin on the Grill at The Shade Tree
Rio Headliner Eddie Griffin took over the FatBurger grills at The Shade Tree shelter when he hosted the shelter residents with a Fatburger Lunch! Eddie was flipping burgers and cracking his classic jokes with the residents while the kitchen staff brought the cooked patties inside to create the burger, keeping lunch healthy with a side salad. The jokes kept coming out as Eddie took pictures and signed autographs for everyone. During the lunch, Eddie and his celebrity friends such as Mike Tyson were tweeting live pictures.
The Fat Burger drive started on Friday, December 13 and ran through Sunday, December 22 Guests were asked to help by buying an extra burger for donation to The Shade Tree. – Fatburger’s Fat Bar, Fatburger Red Rock and Fatburger Green Valley MATCHED every burger donated. The Ultimate Fighting Championship® will return to Brazil for an epic sporting event as legendary fighters collide on the biggest fight card in UFC® history at UFC®147 at Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on June 23, 2012. The largest crowd ever is expected for the highly anticipated rematch between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and American contender Chael Sonnen, a grudge match two years in the making. The event also features a live finale of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil™, the showdown between two Brazilians and icons of the sport – coaches Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva.
From the beginning of the negotiations for the UFC’s next event in the country, the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo both emerged as strong options to host the event. Engenhao, home to football club Botafogo and future venue for the 2016 Olympics, has hosted many legendary sports and entertainment events since its opening in 2007. The event marks the first time for a UFC event in a soccer stadium and the organization expects a record audience. The mark to beat is UFC 129, held in April of 2011 at Rogers Centre in Canada, which had a record attendance of 55,000 fans.
“This will be the biggest sporting event of the year” said UFC President Dana White. “Bigger than the NFL, the NBA, you name it – UFC 147 will be the biggest. The whole world wants to see this fight between Silva and Sonnen. We are broadcast in over 150 countries in 22 languages in half a billion homes. Wherever those fans are, they are going to be watching this fight.”
The rivalry between Anderson Silva (29-4-0) and Chael Sonnen (28-11-1) has produced the biggest grudge match in UFC history. The two bitter rivals first faced each other in August of 2010 at UFC 117 in Oakland, California. The battle featured arguably the biggest come-from-behind win ever; as Silva, who was being dominated from the beginning of the fight, submitted his American rival with a triangle choke in the last round. It was the seventh of nine title defenses for the Brazilian champion.
In what has been one of the long-awaited rematches in UFC history, Brazilian fans will also get a chance to witness Vitor Belfort (21-9-0) and Wanderlei Silva (34-11-1) square off in the Octagon®. In their first meeting in 1998 in São Paulo, Belfort knocked out Silva 44 seconds into their fight. Since then, MMA fans have eagerly waited for over 10 years to witness the rematch between two legends of the sport. Belfort is coming off of a win over American fighter Anthony Johnson in UFC Rio (UFC 142), while Wanderlei dramatically knocked out opponent Cung Le at UFC 139.
