The continual success of the venue is attributed to both past employees and the current 82 full time and 1,200 part time employees. Many of these employees have been a part of the Thomas & Mack Center team for over 20 years. The arena is widely recognized for its many “best practices” throughout the sports and entertainment industry.

“Being such a viable venue for 30 years is a testament to all the very talented people who have dedicated their professional lives to the Thomas & Mack Center,” said Newcomb.

In 1983 the Thomas & Mack Center was designed and expanded to become Las Vegas’ first multipurpose arena to bring in revenue to the city. Once built, the facility had two major goals to reach: 100 event days per year and one million guests. Today, the Thomas & Mack Center hosts more than 250 diverse and distinct events annually, with over 22 million guests having passed through its doors. The venue contributes significantly to the overall economic impact of Southern Nevada by providing jobs, generating sales tax, and providing a facility for tourists and locals alike.

“Throughout our 30 years the Thomas & Mack Center has established itself as one of the premier venues in the country. We have always prided ourselves on being a leader in the venue business and not being afraid to step outside the box,” said Newcomb. “Creating our own ticketing company, UNLVtickets, was a big step that not many venues have taken and it has been a great revenue generator for our venue. Operating our own food and beverage also gives us the control and flexibility to generate revenue in concessions and catering.”

On Nov. 21, 1983, the Thomas & Mack Center opened its doors to the public for its very first event when the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Men’s Basketball team took on Victoria, Canada for the first game on their new home court. The Gala Grand Opening was held on December 16, 1983 and featured Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Diana Ross. Over the past 30 years, the Thomas & Mack Center has hosted some of the most exciting live events in the world such as the National Finals Rodeo, Championship Boxing, PBR World Finals, Disney On Ice, NBA Summer League, USA Basketball, WWE, Mountain West Basketball Tournament, the 2007 NBA All-Star Game, Ringling Bros. & Barnum Bailey Circus, and numerous others. Additionally some of the biggest superstars and super groups have performed at the facility, including Elton John, U2, Mariah Carey, Dixie Chicks, Eric Clapton, Celine Dion, N’SYNC, Garth Brooks, Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, Phish, Jay-Z, Eminem, and Green Day to name a few.

“The wide array of events we get to be involved with is key to our success and keeps the team motivated. We have had many great highlights but a couple really come to mind,” said Newcomb. “In 2007 we were the first non NBA venue to host the NBA All Star Game, and we were the first US venue to host the PRIDE Fighting Championship group from Japan and held two great events with them in 2006 and 2007.”

The Thomas & Mack Center underwent renovations in 1992 and 2000 with a few recent updates last year. A new rigging grid was put in which increased surface area for the attachment of rigging points adding flexibility for different types of shows and events that Thomas & Mack Center hosts. Additionally, the venue has upgraded its control room to full HD production. This system is primarily for in-house video scoreboard presentations as well as projects that are produced for live and on-demand streaming.

Recently the Nevada state legislature approved $47 million in renovations and upgrades to the arena scheduled to begin in Fall of 2014. It will be a 24 month project working around the venues event schedule. Almost half of the renovation dollars will go to mechanical upgrades to bring the facility up to code and replace the 30-year-old infrastructure. Other updates and additions include ADA improvements, concourse restroom improvements, fire and life safety improvements, replacement of retractable seating, new seats in the plaza, concourse circulation improvements, concourse refurbishment, new escalators at the main entrance, and additional escalators at other entrances.

“We’re continuing to evolve and develop new offerings for our content partners that allow them to create new revenues and build new touch points with consumers,” said Newcomb. “We’ve always focused on improving. In a city like Las Vegas, you’ve got to keep getting better. The team members who came before us set the groundwork, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that the Thomas & Mack Center is a success going forward for another 30 years.”

The Colosseum at Caesars is Named Top Venue at 2011 Billboard Touring Awards

THE COLOSSEUM AT CAESARS PALACE NAMED TOP VENUE
AT 2011 BILLBOARD TOURING AWARDS

Sixth Consecutive Win for World-Class Venue

For the sixth consecutive year (dating back to 2005 when the category was first introduced), The Colosseum at Caesars Palace has been named Top Venue Under 5,000 seats at the recent 2011 Billboard Touring Awards.  The annual award was based on global box office numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore from Oct. 1, 2010, through Sept. 30, 2011.

The ongoing success of the world-class venue can be credited to the stellar entertainers that grace the stage of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and the distinctive artist residency model featuring the greatest entertainers in the world, including: Celine Dion, Elton John, Rod Stewart and Shania Twain (who begins her run on Dec. 1, 2012).

In 2011, The Colosseum at Caesars Palace was home to Cher’s sell-out run of the final shows of her three-year residency, (which culminated in February), along with the first year of 54 sold-out performances of Celine Dion’s triumphant return that began in March.  In August, Rod Stewart kicked off the first two runs of sell-out performances of his two-year residency of Rod Stewart: The Hits. and in September Elton John returned for his second residency at The Colosseum with the premiere of his sold-out run of The Million Dollar Piano.

The Colosseum is booked and operated by AEG Live. “The past year has been very strong for The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.  In addition to opening productions with the newest resident performers-Celine Dion, Rod Stewart, Elton John- we also announced the addition of Shania Twain to the lineup which begins in December 2012,” said John Meglen, president and co-CEO of AEG Live/Concerts West. “This rotation along with presenting top-notch touring performers gives us the ability to offer an unforgettable entertainment experience to nearly every visitor to Las Vegas. Our ability to attract the biggest, most diverse group of international superstars is one of the reasons people love to visit The Colosseum.”

“Celine Dion had a triumphant return to The Colosseum, ushering in a whole new era of top-shelf entertainment for the venue and, frankly, the city of Las Vegas, “ added Gary Selesner, president of Caesars Palace. “Opening March 15, 2011, Celine’s first 20 shows grossed more than $14M, and we saw a ripple effect from those ticket sales by way of increased hotel revenue at Caesars Palace.”

Other entertainers who helped make The Colosseum at Caesars Palace a number-one venue in 2011 include Jerry Seinfeld, Luis Miguel, Jeff Dunham, Diana Ross, Leonard Cohen, Stevie Nicks, and Janet Jackson.

Tickets are available for upcoming performances at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace including;

  •        Sting – Nov. 25
  •        Janet Jackson – Nov. 26
  •        Jeff Dunham – Dec. 2 – 3
  •        Jerry Seinfeld – Dec. 26-27

“This past year has been such an amazing journey and to find myself poised to play at The Colosseum is truly magical,” said Shania. “The Colosseum is an iconic location with unmatched energy, and I’m excited to bring a pop/country spin to the city. People from all over the world travel to Las Vegas and I’m so thrilled to be able to share my music with a truly global audience.”

Fresh on the heels of receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and with her first memoir entitled “From This Moment On” climbing the New York Times Best Sellers list, Shania Twain’s meteoric star continues to shine bright. Her docu-series on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network “Why Not? With Shania Twain” debuted on May 8th as the-highest rated premier to date for the network. Her final episode in which she reveals her decision to return to the stage airs on OWN Sunday, June 12 at 10:00 PM/ET; 9:00 PM/CT.

“We work hard living up to the mission of making The Colosseum The Home to the Greatest Entertainers in the World, and with the addition of Shania Twain, we have exceeded our goal.” said John Meglen, President and co-CEO of AEG Live/Concerts West. “The Colosseum proudly continues its rich tradition of shining the spotlight on world-class stars.”

With STILL THE ONE kicking off in December 2012, Shania Twain joins fellow Canadian national-treasure Celine Dion, and international superstars Elton John and Rod Stewart as resident headliners at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace.

“Without question, Shania Twain is an international superstar and one of the most beloved icons in country music,” said Gary Selesner, Caesars Palace president. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome her as The Colosseum’s first-ever country music resident headliner. We are looking forward to Shania’s triumphant return to the stage with many powerful and memorable performances at Caesars Palace.”
An amazing and accomplished singer and songwriter, Shania Twain is a phenomenon. With more than 75 million albums sold worldwide, she is the top-selling female country artist of all time; has multi-platinum album sales in 32 countries; has the eighth-biggest selling album of all time in the U.S. and 18 top ten songs, eight of which reached #1.

Most amazing of all, Shania has reached beyond all feasible music boundaries with just four studio albums – three of which have received Diamond certification by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for sales of 10 million copies in the U.S. She is the only female artist to have three consecutive albums sell more than 10 million copies.
