Shark Reef Aquarium’s Giant Pacific Octopus Predicts Croatia to Win Soccer’s International Championship Final Sunday, July 15

Shark Reef Aquarium’s Giant Pacific Octopus Predicts
Croatia to Win Soccer’s International Championship Final
Sunday, July 15

It’s official. The Giant Pacific Octopus at Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay reentered the world of sports predictions earlier this morning when he picked Croatia to defeat France in Sunday morning’s international soccer final.

The unnamed, one-year-old male octopus weighs an estimated 20 pounds and has tentacles roughly three feet long. The octopus selected between two 8” x 8” acrylic boxes, both containing his daily breakfast meal, placed inside his tank. Each box was labeled with one of the competing country’s flags. After 42 minutes of intense deliberation, the octopus’ prediction disagrees with the MGM Resorts Sports Books as they have France as the slight favorite as of Friday morning.

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Hosts National Geographic Photo Ark Through September 6

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay has teamed up with National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore to host the National Geographic Photo Ark exhibition in an effort to enlighten guests to the importance of protecting the world’s wildlife and their habitats. The photo exhibition runs through September 6.
The National Geographic Photo Ark is a multiyear effort led by Sartore to document every species in the world’s zoos and wildlife sanctuaries and inspire people to save these animals before it’s too late. Sartore has visited 40 countries in his quest to create a photo archive of global biodiversity that currently features the portraits of an estimated 12,000 species of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Once completed, the Photo Ark will serve as an important record of each animal’s existence and a powerful testament to the importance of saving them.
The subjects in each of Sartore’s photos are treated with the same respect and admiration, no matter their size, to create a captivating image that visually connects with the viewer. “It’s the eye contact that moves people,” said Sartore. “It engages their feelings and a desire to help.”
The Photo Ark exhibition at Mandalay Bay can be found on public view along the wall adjacent to Shark Reef and inside the aquarium itself for guests visiting the attraction. Some of the animals featured in the photos include a Malayan Tiger, Okapi, Woodland Caribou, Tapir and Javan Rhinoceros Hornbill.
A documentary series on Sartore’s work, RARE – Creatures of the Photo Ark, will premiere on PBS in July. Learn more at NatGeoPhotoArk.org and join the conversation on social media with #SaveTogether.

“Sea Monsters Revealed” Makes Las Vegas Debut at Shark Reef Aquarium Inside Mandalay Bay

“SEA MONSTERS REVEALED” MAKES LAS VEGAS DEBUT AT
SHARK REEF AQUARIUM INSIDE
MANDALAY BAY RESORT AND CASINO

Shark Reef Aquarium
The world’s largest exhibition of uniquely preserved sea creatures takes center stage on October 1 with the opening of Sea Monsters Revealed at Shark Reef Aquarium inside Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

The use of a revolutionary polymer preservation technique, commonly known as plastination, allows the collection of once living aquatic creatures to be brought together on dry land. The process allows guests to see the outside and inside of some of the sea’s most magnificent inhabitants, including an 18-foot, 3,000-pound whale shark.

The exhibit also features a 15-foot-long mako shark and giant sunfish among its more than 18 full-body sea creatures. Additional displays include 150 individual organs and smaller specimens such as tropical fish, crustaceans and octopuses.

“For years, our guests have been fascinated and intrigued by the beautiful living creatures that call Shark Reef home,” said Adrienne Rowland, director of animal care at Shark Reef Aquarium. “Now, with this immersive and interactive experience, they can discover some of the ocean’s most exotic and elusive animals up close and personal, and in a whole new way.”

Located adjacent to Shark Reef Aquarium, Sea Monsters Revealed will provide locals and visitors alike with a greater understanding of the world’s oceans and how mankind’s interactions and conservation efforts are vital to the health and preservation of these beautiful animals.

The exhibit was developed through a partnership between BASE Entertainment and Dalian Hoffen Bio-Technique Co. and has been on display at some of North America’s most prestigious aquariums including the Georgia Aquarium, the Vancouver Aquarium and the Museum of Science & Industry in Tampa.

Sea Monsters Revealed opens to the public October 1 and runs through October 2016.

Sea Monsters Revealed will be open Sunday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. Shark Reef is open Sunday – Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 10 a.m. Last admission is one hour prior to close.

Two Scalloped Hammerheads Join the Aquarium’s Diverse Family of Sharks

hammerhead shark

Two new curious creatures are lurking beneath the surface at Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The attraction’s newest residents, a pair of Scalloped Hammerheads, were recently introduced into the 1.3-million-gallon Shipwreck exhibit.

Distinguished by the unusual shape of their heads, Scalloped Hammerheads reside in coastal warm temperate and tropical seas, and can grow up to 14 feet in length, weighing over 300 pounds. Shark Reef Aquarium is one of only three aquariums in the United States that Scalloped Hammerheads call home.

“Scalloped Hammerheads are one of the most distinguishable species of sharks and we are honored to welcome these stunning creatures to our aquarium,” said Adrienne Rowland, director of Shark Reef Aquarium. “Guests will be intrigued when they see these magnificent fish swimming alongside other Shark Reef favorites.”

Each of the Scalloped Hammerheads was retrieved from a sustainable and healthy population in Hawaii. Other populations of Scalloped Hammerheads were listed as an endangered species in 2014.

“We are fortunate to have these animals in our aquarium for our guests who may never have the opportunity to see them in the wild,” said Rowland. “This experience provides guests with a better understanding of the delicate balance of life in our oceans.”

Shark Reef is now home to two species of hammerhead sharks: the Scalloped Hammerhead and smaller Bonnethead Sharks.

GET UP-CLOSE-AND-PERSONAL AT SHARK REEF
AQUARIUM
WITH NEW ANIMAL ENCOUNTER EXPERIENCES

Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino invites guests to abandon their day jobs and get their feet (or in this case, hands) wet as a guest Aquarist with three new experiential programs. Aptly titled Animal Encounters, the program takes participants behind-the-scenes to assist in feeding the Aquarium’s most-admired residents including stingrays, green sea turtles and zebra sharks.

Stingray Feed
Guests can experience Las Vegas’ premier aquarium attraction like a true VIP with exclusive access prior to daily opening. An expert guide will tour participants through the 90,560-square-foot Shark Reef Aquarium which holds nearly 1.6-million gallons of water. After the private tour, guests are invited to roll up their sleeves and reach down into the touch pool to feed stingrays and horseshoe crabs a breakfast smorgasbord of shrimp, krill and fish. At the conclusion of their experience, guests will receive a memorable keepsake photo to take home and show off to friends.

The one-hour Stingray Feed experience takes place daily at 9:15 a.m. and is limited to four guests per session. Tickets are $50 per adult and $40 for children ages 5-12. Annual Pass member pricing is $45 per adult and $25 for children ages 5-12.

Sea Turtle Feed
OD the sea turtle captured hearts and headlines after a cross-country journey to Mandalay Bay’s Shark Reef Aquarium last summer. Now, participants can get up close and personal with the beloved OD and his new Shipwreck mates during the Sea Turtle Feed program. This 45-minute experience begins with a behind-the-scenes tour of Shark Reef Aquarium where guests will gain insight into the facility’s daily operations. After picking up a nutritious feast from the Shark Reef kitchen, guests will be taken above the Shipwreck Exhibit to meet the 300-pound turtles who eagerly wait to be served. Participants may even get the chance to meet some of the other toothy residents of the exhibit during their feeding time.

The Sea Turtle Feed experience takes place Sunday – Friday at 12:45 p.m. and is limited to four people per session. The program is open to participants 13 years of age and older. Tickets are $70 per person and $60 for Annual Pass members and include admission to Shark Reef Aquarium as well as keepsake photos of the participants in action.

Shark Feed
What sharks eat and how they prefer their meals are just a couple of the questions participants will have answered during this one-hour interactive experience. Beginning with a behind-the-scenes tour of Shark Reef Aquarium, guests will admire the jaws of various species of sharks while demystifying myths and truths about nature’s most intriguing marine animal. Participants can then grab a feeding tong and serve lunch to the stunning zebra sharks while Aquarists demonstrate the feeding technique for the larger species. Staff members will capture guests in action and provide keepsake photos to ensure that every exhilarating moment is remembered.

Friday at 1:15 p.m. and is limited to four guests per session. The program is open to participants 13 years of age and older. Tickets are $70 per person and $60 for Annual Pass members and include admission to Shark Reef Aquarium.

Participants in the Sea Turtle or Shark Feed programs can purchase a supplemental guided tour through Shark Reef Aquarium with an expert guide for an additional $25.

Each of these programs can be booked online at mandalaybay.com/shark-reef/animalencounters/  or by calling the box office at (702) 632-4555.
