One of the Music Industry’s Biggest and Most Buzzed About Annual Events Moves to NBC with New Multi-Year Deal

NBC and dick clark productions have announced that the network has acquired the rights to broadcast the immensely popular “Billboard Music Awards” in a new multi-year deal set to begin in 2018.

The 2018 telecast, with a date to be announced in the near future, will showcase the hottest musical acts, biggest performances, unexpected collaborations and buzzworthy pop culture moments that will have the world talking.

dick clark productions and ABC today released the nominees for the “2017 Billboard Music Awards,” honoring the year’s most successful artists in 52 categories of music.  The “2017 Billboard Music Awards” will broadcast LIVE from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 21 at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT on ABC. This year’s award ceremony will showcase big performances, unexpected collaborations and much-discussed pop culture moments.

As part of today’s nomination announcement, singer and hit-songwriter Julia Michaels and Fall Out Boy musician Pete Wentz appeared in the 8:00 a.m. ET hour of ABC’s “Good Morning America” to announce the nominees in five categories, including: Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album and Top Hot 100 Song. Following the broadcast, four additional categories, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top R&B Song and Top Rock Song, were exclusively announced via Billboard.com. The remaining categories were announced exclusively via the Billboard Music Awards’ Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

“2017 Billboard Music Awards” nominations include a cross section of artists with many seeing more nods than ever. Drake and The Chainsmokers lead the pack with 22 nominations each, tying the all-time record for most nominations in a single year.  Drake’s nominations include, among others, Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album. The Chainsmokers’ nominations include double nods in six categories: Top Dance/Electronic Album, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Selling Song, Top Radio Song, Top Collaboration and Top Dance/Electronic Song, with single nominations in 10 other categories. Twenty One Pilots received the third most nominations, at 17, including Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, and three nominations in the Top Rock Song category.

Rihanna received the fourth most nominations, 14, including Top Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album and a double nomination for Top R&B Song. Returning winners from 2016, who also received nominations this year, include Adele, Justin Bieber, Luke Bryan, Lauren Daigle, Drake, Kirk Franklin, Enrique Iglesias, Nicky Jam, Wiz Khalifa, Major Lazer, Rihanna, Chris Stapleton, The Weeknd, Twenty One Pilots and more.

2017 TOP NOMINEE CHART FACTS:

  • In the past year, the chart-ruling Beyoncé notched her sixth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with Lemonade and earned eight top 40-charting songs from the set on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lemonade also made the diva the first woman to debut at No. 1 with her first six full-length studio albums. In support of Lemonade, the entertainer mounted the Formation World Tour, which played to more than 2.2 million fans at 49 shows, and earned $256 million according to Billboard Boxscore. Beyoncé is a six-time Billboard Music Award winner, and was also was honored with the Billboard Millennium Award in 2011.
  • 15-time Billboard Music Award winner Justin Bieber continued an illustrious run of success since releasing his No. 1 Billboard 200 album Purpose, which generated his first three Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles: “What Do You Mean?,” “Sorry” and “Love Yourself.” He added two more top five Hot 100 hits in 2016, as his vocals helped Major Lazer’s “Cold Water” and DJ Snake’s “Let Me Love You” reach Nos. 2 and 4, respectively. The former also crowned Billboard‘s Pop Songs and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts, all while Purpose continued its domination: it has spent more than 70 weeks on the chart, Bieber’s longest run on the list since his since 2010 LP, My World 2.0.
  • EDM DJ duo The Chainsmokers surged to the mainstream with a string of smash singles over the past year. The pair notched their first top five Billboard Hot 100 hit in summer 2016, “Don’t Let Me Down,” featuring rising star Daya. After that, The Chainsmokers followed with their first No. 1, the 12-week leader “Closer,” featuring Halsey. The nostalgic song logged the longest reign atop the Hot 100 of 2016 and went on to historic heights, breaking the mark for the most weeks (27) tallied in the top five for any song in the Hot 100’s 59-year history.
  • Breakout rapper Desiigner’s viral hit “Panda” exploded in 2016, on its way to a record-setting 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart and 17 weeks atop Hot Rap Songs. It also clocked two weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song’s success helped the Brooklyn native earn several year-end honors, including the top new R&B/hip-hop artist of 2016.
  • Everything Drake touched turned to chart gold in the past year. The artist claimed his first No. 1 as a lead act on the Billboard Hot 100 with “One Dance,” featuring WizKid and Kyla; his Views album racked up 13 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (the longest run atop the list for a man since 1992); and his recent More Life project bowed atop the list in April. The latter set granted Drake his seventh consecutive No. 1 on the list, comprising every one of his full-length albums. Additionally, More Life blasted in atop the chart with a record number of streams for its songs in a single week: 384.8 million in the U.S.
 
  • Since soaring onto Billboard‘s country charts in 2012, Florida Georgia Line has continued to conquer with its mix of party anthems and reflective ballads. Dig Your Roots arrived as the duo’s third No. 1 on the Top Country Albums chart and the set spun off FGL’s fifth No. 1 single on Hot Country Songs, the 18-week leader “H.O.L.Y.” (as well as follow-up hits featuring Tim McGraw and Backstreet Boys). The act boasts two of three longest-reigning No. 1s in the Hot Country Songs chart’s six-decade history: before “H.O.L.Y.,” its debut hit “Cruise” ruled for a record 24 weeks.
  • 12-time Billboard Music Award winner Rihanna continued a record-setting run with her No. 1 Billboard 200 album Anti. As the set’s “Love on the Brain” reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, she became only the third act in Hot 100 history to earn 30 top 10 hits, following The Beatles (34) and Madonna (38). Another Anti top 10, “Needed Me,” gave the global superstar her longest-charting Hot 100 hit: its 45 weeks surpassed the 41 of “We Found Love,” featuring Calvin Harris in 2011-2012.
  • Two-time Billboard Music Award-winners Twenty One Pilots spent the past year solidifying their domination of Billboard’s rock charts, claiming three long-running No. 1s on the Hot Rock Songs chart. The alternative rock duo’s “Stressed Out” ruled for 23 weeks, “Ride” followed with nine weeks on top, and “Heathens” spent a record 30 weeks at No. 1. All three tracks reached the top five on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart — making Twenty One Pilots the first rock act to earn three top five hits in a year since 1988.
  • After The Weeknd broke through to the pop mainstream in 2015 with his No. 1 Billboard 200 album Beauty Behind the Madness, the eight-time Billboard Music Award winner returned with another chart-topper, Starboy, in 2016. The set ruled the list for five weeks and spun off a No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 in its title track, featuring Daft Punk. dick clark productions and ABC announced today that the “2016 Billboard Music Awards” will be hosted for the third year in a row by Grammy award winning recording artist Ludacris.  He will be joined by first-time host and international recording artist, Ciara. It was also announced that this year’s award show will move to the brand new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The “2016 Billboard Music Awards” will be the first non-Pay-Per-View live broadcast event from the new venue, which officially opened on Wednesday, April 6, 2016. The “2016 Billboard Music Awards” is set to return to ABC and will broadcast live on SUNDAY, MAY 22 at 8pm ET. This year’s show will showcase big performances, unexpected collaborations and pop culture moments that will have everyone talking.

“The Billboard Music Awards is one of best award shows to honor chart success. My great friend Ludacris and I have also shared songs together on the Billboard chart,” said Ciara. “I look forward to sharing the stage with him on this special night. It will definitely be a night to remember!”

The “2016 Billboard Music Awards” finalists will be announced on Monday, April 11 live on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Tune-in to “Good Morning America” in the 8am ET hour when Ludacris and Ciara reveal finalists in six categories.  Immediately following the broadcast, five additional categories will be exclusively announced live via Billboard Music Award’s Facebook and Periscope, followed by a live stream on ABC News of the remaining categories.

Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement. ABC’s 3-hour telecast of the “2015 Billboard Music Awards” scored an across-the-board victory, ranking No. 1 in its 8:00-11:00 p.m. time slot in Total Viewers, all key Adults (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54) and Teens 12-17.  Delivering its 3rd-straight year of Total Viewer growth (+5% – 11.2 million vs. 10.7 million) and gaining Adults 18-49 (+9% – 3.8/12 vs. 3.5/10), the “Billboard Music Awards” generated its most watched telecast in 14 years and earned a 12-year high in young adults – since 2001 and 2003, respectively. In addition, the annual show was up for the 3rd year with Teens 12-17 (+3%) to post its highest rating since 2003.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and dick clark productions (dcp) will present the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 10, 2016. The ceremony will air on NBC LIVE coast-to-coast from 5-8 p.m (PT) and 8-11 p.m. (ET) from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Produced by dick clark productions in association with the HFPA, the Golden Globe Awards are viewed in more than 160 countries worldwide and are one of the few awards ceremonies to include both motion picture and television achievements.

The 2015 “Golden Globe Awards” on NBC averaged a 5.8 rating, 16 share in adults 18-49 and 19.3 million viewers overall in “live plus same day” ratings from Nielsen Media Research on Sunday night, Jan. 11, making it the top-rated primetime entertainment program on the Big 4 networks in 18-49 since ABC’s Academy Awards the prior March.  It was also NBC’s highest rated primetime entertainment telecast in 18-49 and total viewers in the year since the 2014 Golden Globes. Versus NBC’s non-sports average in the Sunday 8-11 p.m. time period the prior season, this year’s “Globes” telecast was up 314% in 18-49 rating (5.8 vs. 1.4) and +269% in total viewers (19.3 million vs. 5.2 million).

Blues-infused Rock n’ Roll Group Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band Returns to The Orleans Showroom February 7-8

Award-winning blues musicians Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band will bring their chart-topping hits to The Orleans Showroom February 7 and 8.

Bandleader Kenny Wayne Shepherd began his career at a young age, sharing the stage with New Orleans legend Bryan Lee at 13 years old. Shepherd has since been listed among the top blues guitarists of all time by Guitar World magazine, along with legends B.B. King and Eric Clapton.

The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band debuted in 1995 with “Ledbetter Heights” and the album quickly rose to the top of the Billboard blues chart. The band followed up with “Trouble Is…”, which also reached the top of the blues charts and featured “Blue on Black,” a single that spent 17 consecutive weeks at #1 on the rock charts.

Veteran television executive Mark Bracco has been named Executive Vice President of Programming and Development for dick clark productions, it was announced today by Mike Mahan, President of dick clark productions.  In the newly created role, Bracco will oversee programming and development for the company that includes such perennial hits as the “American Music Awards,” “Billboard Music Awards,” “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” and a variety of other projects at various stages of production.  He will be based in the company’s Santa Monica headquarters and will report directly to Mahan.“Mark has a phenomenal breadth of experience working with a variety of alternative and special programming, as well as extensive experience with dick clark properties,” said Mahan.  “As dick clark productions expands our television footprint, Mark will play a significant leadership role within the company.”

“It is an honor to work for such a historic company as dick clark productions, under the leadership of Allen Shapiro and Mike Mahan who are responsible for some of the biggest television events in the world,” said Bracco.  “My first love is live television and dcp is the preeminent producer of live events on television. This is a dream come true.”

Most recently, Mr. Bracco served as Vice President, Alternative Series and Specials, ABC Entertainment where he oversaw specials and worked on various series for the network including the “Oscars,” “CMA Awards,” “American Music Awards,” “Dick Clark’s New Years’ Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest, “Shark Tank,” “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution,”Supernanny,” and “The Mole.”

Mr. Bracco began his career in 1993 at TV Guide magazine. In September 1996, he accepted a position as a segment producer on the launch team for the entertainment newsmagazine “Access Hollywood.” In December 2001, he moved over to ABC News’ “Good Morning America” as entertainment producer, where he was responsible for overseeing all entertainment-related segments and events on the morning program.

In August 2006, Mr. Bracco relocated from New York to Los Angeles with his wife, Jamie, and their three children, Kyle, Mary and Erin.  Mr. Bracco has a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Hofstra University.

The 2014 Billboard Music Awards will broadcast LIVE from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 18, on ABC from 8:00 PM–11:00 PM ET, with performances from music’s biggest stars. Derulo appeared in the 8:00 AM ET hour of “Good Morning America” today, to announce his participation as a performer in this year’s Billboard Music Awards. Derulo also announced five of the 40 finalist categories, including: Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Female Artist, Top R&B Artist, and Top Country Artist.

Finalists Imagine Dragons and Lorde lead with twelve categories each. Imagine Dragons is vying for its first Billboard Music Award this year. The quartet burned up the charts in 2013 with its album “Night Visions” (which is also a finalist for Top Rock Album) and its many hit singles. Among those is the smash hit “Radioactive,” which broke the record for the most weeks ever on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lorde broke through in 2013 as well with her inescapable No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 single “Royals” and debut album “Pure Heroine.” The two musical acts go head-to-head in nine categories, including Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Radio Songs Artist, Top Rock Artist, Top Rock Album, Top Hot 100 Song, Top Digital Song, Top Streaming Song (Audio), and Top Rock Song.

Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis follow with 11, 10 and 8 categories respectively. Justin Timberlake could capture his first Billboard Music Award this year as a solo artist. Included in his 11 categories, are Top Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album. With the group ‘N Sync, Timberlake earned five Billboard Music Awards, including the 2000 trophy for Album of the Year (“No Strings Attached”). Katy Perry is already a three-time Billboard Music Award winner, with the 2011 Top Hot 100 Artist and the Top Digital Songs Artist, and the 2012 Spotlight Award, honoring her achievement as the first woman to earn five No. 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart from one album (“Teenage Dream”). Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are also past winners, receiving Top Rap Song at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.

  • Both Lorde and Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell Williams with their respective Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s “Royals” and “Blurred Lines,” lead the songs race with 5 title categories each.

  • Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams’ “Get Lucky,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton’s “Can’t Hold Us,” and the duo’s hit with Wanz’s “Thrift Shop,” in addition to Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and Avicii’s “Wake Me Up!” all are tied with 2 title categories each.
  • Some first-time Billboard Music Award finalists include: Lorde (12 categories), Avicii (4 categories), Capital Cities (3 categories), Zedd (3 categories), Sidewalk Prophets (1 category)
  • Rihanna has been a finalist at the Billboard Music Awards 49 times, including 5 categories this year.

Fans can vote for their favorite Milestone artist online and enter a contest for a chance to win an opportunity to present the award live at this year’s event alongside global music superstar and Billboard Music Award winner Kelly Rowland.

Sighting: Jennifer Lopez Attends All-New Jabbawockeez Show in Las Vegas on May 20

Last night, iconic pop star Jennifer Lopez and boyfriend Casper Smart showed support for the world-famous dance crew Jabbawockeez by attending their all-new headlining show “PRiSM” at Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Taking it back to her days as a Fly Girl, Lopez grooved to old school jams in her seat, and even stood up with the audience to participate in a popular dance led by the Jabbawockeez. The show opened just three days ago, making Lopez one of the first to experience the new headlining show from the dance crew known for their white masks and captivating dance moves. Lopez was in town following her recent performance at the Billboard Music Awards, where Jabbawockeez also had an outstanding performance with superstar Taylor Swift.
