Over 6,500 Participants Attend 15th Annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run

On Saturday, December 7, Opportunity Village hosted the 15TH annual Las Vegas Great Santa Run in Downtown Las Vegas and were able to gather 6,644 Santa participants from across the world, including 6 countries and 43 states.


All proceeds from the Las Vegas Great Santa Run will go towards the programs and services for adults with disabilities at Opportunity Village.


The race, presented by Circle K, kicked off at the Fremont Street Experience and featured numerous special guests, including 5K Grand Marshal A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces, 1-mile Marshals The Chippendales, Santa Claus, Mayor Carolyn Goodman, former Mayor Oscar Goodman, and the organization’s all-Elvis dance troupe – The OV Elvi.


“For 15 years, we’ve been honored to host the Great Santa Run in wonderful Downtown Las Vegas in support of adults with disabilities,” said Adam K. Joseph, Vice President of Philanthropy at Opportunity Village. “This truly could not be done without the Southern Nevada community. From our vendors to volunteers to long-time partners, we’re absolutely thrilled with the support and outcome.”


Additional pre-race entertainment was provided by Gabriella Versace of SEXXY: The Show, Zumba by Kat and Jjohn, a Fit4Mom workout to the late George Dare’s “Run Santa Run”, DJ Mikey P, DJ Jesse Estrada, and mascots from the Vegas Golden Nights, Las Vegas Aces and Las Vegas Aviators. The starting line stage and after-party entertainment stage were hosted by Mark Shunock of Monday’s Dark and featured an impressive line-up of entertainment including Empire Records, WOW! The Vegas Spectacular, Celestia, Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel in Concert, and Kung Pow (DJ).


All Las Vegas Great Santa Run participants received a five-piece Santa suit with their registration and a commemorative medal upon completion. Another highlight of the event was Mena Hawkins, an inspirational young woman with cerebral palsy, not only crossing the finish line, but also raising over $7,200 for Opportunity Village in her fundraising efforts.

To recognize the milestone of its 2 millionth visitor, The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, celebrated the unsuspecting guest’s arrival with classic, Las Vegas-style fanfare. Surprise festivities for Sylvia Geitner from Munich, Germany, included a presentation of the key to the Museum by President and Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Ullman, a proclamation by City of Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman and a toast led by Museum Founding Board Member and Former Mayor Oscar B. Goodman. Geitner also received a jar of commemorative, house-distilled moonshine and a lifetime membership to the Museum. Afterward, cake and Champagne were served in The Underground Speakeasy.

 Fremont Street Experience, located in Downtown Las Vegas, in conjunction with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor’s Authority (LVCVA) will kick-off National Travel Rally Week with a pictorial retrospective Viva Vision Tribute to Las Vegas on Tuesday, May 6. The show features hundreds of photos of Las Vegas taken throughout the years and will also include a special message from Chairman of the LVCVA’s Host Committee and former Mayor Oscar Goodman. The show will be featured after each regularly scheduled Viva Vision show on Tuesday, May 6 and after the 8 p.m. Viva Vision shows Wednesday, May 7th through Sunday, May 11th.

WHAT: Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino will hold a pep rally for the USA Eagles rugby sevens team as they prepare to compete in the 2014 USA Sevens international rugby tournament Jan. 24 – 26 at Sam Boyd Stadium. The festivities start at 10:45 a.m. with music on the plaza near PBR Rock Bar & Grill. At 11 a.m., USA Sevens cheerleaders will kick off the pep rally, followed by remarks from Miracle Mile Shops General Manager Jerry Irwin and Dan Lyle, tournament director for USA Sevens Rugby and executive vice president for United World Sports. Former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman will also be in attendance to welcome the USA Eagles, whose members will be introduced to fans by Head Coach Matt Hawkins. About USA Sevens Rugby:
The annual USA Sevens international rugby tournament is the premier rugby event in North America as well as the fourth event out of nine in the HSBC Sevens World Series. USA Sevens is the only North American stop in the series. Fans in attendance will see 16 international rugby sevens teams play 45 matches during a three-day competition in an attempt to gain points in the Sevens World Series standings. Played on the same size field as traditional 15-player rugby, rugby sevens is played with just seven players per team.  Matches have seven minute halves with two minute intervals for pool and knock-out matches. Stratosphere Theater hosts the second in a series of planned Showbiz Roasts 


Andy Walmsley Entertainment (AWE) presents the Showbiz Roast of former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, bringing the show business community of Las Vegas together to experience camaraderie rarely enjoyed since the golden era of the Rat Pack.

50% of net proceeds from the roast will be donated to benefit The Miracle League of Las Vegas, a non-profit organization that offers children with cognitive and/or physical challenges the opportunity to play baseball.

Oscar Goodman served three terms as Mayor of Las Vegas from 1999 to 2011 and has been referred to by many the city’s “most popular mayor”.  His wife, Carolyn Goodman, currently serves as mayor of Las Vegas.  Before being elected into office, Goodman was a defense attorney representing defendants accused of being organized crime figures. Goodman currently serves as an ambassador for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Hurricane Sandy Culinary Fundraiser Tomorrow (Dec. 9) at New York-New York


Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada gathers top chefs, mixologists and entertainers for Red Cross fundraiser on Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas

WHAT:  Restaurants and chefs with roots in both New York City and Las Vegas have inspired a unique food and wine event to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy taking place tomorrow, Sunday, December 9 on the Brooklyn Bridge at New York New York Hotel & Casino on the famed Las Vegas Strip.


Sponsored by Southern Wine & Spirits of Nevada, the culinary extravaganza will welcome celebrity chefs Scott Conant from Scarpetta and D.O.C.G Enoteca at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and Francois Payard from Payard Patisserie & Bistro at Caesars Palace, as well as cuisine from 22 of the city’s top restaurants; six bars featuring specialty cocktails, craft beers and wines; and appearances and entertainment from local personalities. 100 percent of the event’s proceeds will go towards the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

In addition to several surprises adding to the excitement, all attendees will receive a commemorative chip reading, “When the ‘chips’ were down, Las Vegas stepped up to help those who were dealt a bad hand by Hurricane Sandy, 12-9-12.”


Mayor Goodman, Meadows School Students Mark Chinese New Year Today at Forum Shops

Meadows School Students’ 16th Annual Performance on Monday, Jan. 23

WHAT: To celebrate the first day of Chinese New Year and welcome the year of the Dragon, The Meadows School will perform the traditional dragon parade throughout The Forum Shops at Caesars. The cast of singers and dancers includes 120 Meadows students – 60 from kindergarten and 60 from fifth grade plus the school’s very special guests, founder and Mayor Carolyn Goodman and her husband former Mayor Oscar Goodman.

Led by seniors Tiffany Fong and Richard Lee who have previously participated in the parade at The Forum Shops when they were in kindergarten and fifth grade, Meadows students will perform a Chinese dragon parade featuring two large and colorful dragons (powered by students), red and gold costumes (Chinese colors of joy), and drums and firecrackers (to keep evil spirits away). As they wind their way through the premier retail destination, they will stop in front of the Fountain of the Gods to perform. This is the 16th year the school’s students have conducted a Chinese New Year performance at The Forum Shops.

The parade takes place on the first day of the Chinese New Year and is considered a lucky day for merchants for it is the birthday for the Chinese god of wealth.

Performers will begin the parade near Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab, continuing throughout the entire shopping center and stopping for a primary performance at the Fountain of the Gods in front of Escada.
